North Central College Reigns As NCAA Division III Champion

A foot injury kept North Central College's Erik Dieckman out of action during the 1997 men's cross country season, leaving him on the sidelines when the Cardinals won a record 10th national championship last year. Saturday afternoon, he made a complete comeback. Dieckman ran his way to the NCAA Division III title in Carlisle, Pa., besting the field of 184 runners with a time of 24:58.27 over the 8,000 meter course. His performance led North Central College to the team title as well, the 11th national title for the school from Naperville, Ill. The victory also marked the 22nd time in 26 national meet appearances that North Central College had either won the team title or finished second. The senior had a seven-second advantage over Williams College's Paul Alsdorf, who was second in 25:05.95. John Krueger from St. John's University was third in the race, followed by Robert Mitchell from Amherst College and Connaire Foran from State University of New York-Cortland. North Central College won the team title with 106 points, outrunning Calvin College (122 points) and Williams College (135). St. John's University was fourth and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point fifth in the final team standings.
