Calvin College Claims First NCAA Division III Title

For the Calvin College women's cross country team it was a long time coming. For State University of New York Cortland's Cheryl Smith, there was no wait at all. In its 10th national appearance, Calvin College won its first NCAA Division III title. The Grand Rapids, Mich., school had been national runner-up three times in its previous appearances, but broke through during Saturday's race. Meanwhile, Smith won the individual title as a freshman, finishing the 5,000 meter course in 17:48. Calvin College, ranked first nationally entering the meet, put all five of its runners in the top 67 finishers to take the title with 124 points. The College of New Jersey (170) was a surprising second after coming into the race ranked 11th in the nation. The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh (179), Carnegie Mellon University (186) and State University of New York-Cortland (196) rounded out the top five teams. Smith had a 13-second advantage over Noel Whitall from The College of New Jersey, who finished in 18:01. The University of Chicago's Rhaina Echols was third, followed by last year's runner-up Sarah Anderson (University of Wisconsin-Superior) and Maree George (Pacific Lutheran University).
