Scott Slade of State University of New York-Plattsburgh has been named the 1999 NCAA Division III Atlantic Region Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year. The United States Track Coaches Association and Mondo Surfacing selects and presents the award annually to a top coach in each of the eight NCAA Division III men's cross country regions. Slade, who recently completed his seventh season as head coach of the Cardinals, guided State University of New York-Plattsburgh to an 18th-place finish at the NCAA Division III Championship held Nov. 20 in Winneconne, Wis. The Cardinals scored 400 points and had one All-American at the event. State University of New York-Plattsburgh qualified as a team entrant for the NCAA Division III Championship by winning the 28-team Atlantic Regional held Nov. 13. The Cardinals placed two runners in the top three individual finishes at the Atlantic Regional to win the meet by 12 points over second-place State University of New York-Cortland. In addition to its title at the NCAA Division III Atlantic Regional, State University of New York-Plattsburgh also won the six-team Cardinal Classic, five-team St. Michael's College Invitational and the 10-team State University of New York-Albany Invitational during the 1999 season. Slade, who has guided State University of New York-Plattsburgh to four appearances as a team entrant at the NCAA Division III Championship in the last six years, is a 1987 graduate of the University of Buffalo (N.Y.). Ellen Hull of Hamilton College (N.Y.) was named the 1999 NCAA Division III Atlantic Region Women's Cross County Coach of the Year. |
