History repeated for the top-ranked Calvin College women's cross country and North Central College men's cross country teams Saturday afternoon in Winneconne, Wis., as both squads successfully defended its title at the NCAA Division III Championship. The event was hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
Calvin College, paced by three All-America performances, scored 85 points to win its second NCAA Division III title. The Knights join State University of New York-Cortland (7), University of St. Thomas (4) and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh (4) as the only multiple champions in the 19-year history of the event. Calvin College's 85 points were 34 better than its national championship score of a year ago.
Middlebury College finished second in the 24-team field with 119 points, while Williams College finished third with 183 points, St. Olaf College fourth with 191 and the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse fifth with 240.
Individually, Calvin College was led by sixth-place finisher Amy Mizzone, 12th-place finisher Lisa Timmer and 29th-place finisher Elizabeth Kuipers. Mizzone and Timmer were also All-Americans last year. Rhaina Echols of the University of Chicago won the 5,000-meter race with a time of 16:46, while Carloyn Jones of the University of San Diego finished second in 17:08. Echols finished third at the event in 1998.
Scoring 84 points, North Central College ran to its 12th NCAA Division III title. The Cardinals won their third consecutive championship to become only second team in the 27-year history of the event to accomplish the feat. The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh won three straight crowns from 1988 to 1990.
Keene State College finished second in the 24-team field with 100 points, while the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse finished third with 101 points, Calvin College fourth with 164 and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater fifth with 192.
Dave Davis of the University of Puget Sound won the individual title, completing the 8,000-meter course in a time of 23:42. It was Davis' first appearance at the event. Colin Young and Tim McCoskey of North Central College finished second and third with times of 23:51 and 23:53, respectively. Besides Young and McCoskey, North Central College was aided in its title by the All-America performances of 26th-place Charlie Califf and 30th-place Jeremy Borling. Young and McCoskey were All-Americans a year ago.
The top 35 finishers at the NCAA Division III Championship received All-America accolades.
