CALVIN'S BRIAN DIEMER NAMED
GREAT LAKES REGION CROSS COUNTRY COACH OF THE YEAR

Brian Diemer of Calvin College (Mich.) has been named the 1999 NCAA Division III Great Lakes Region Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year. The United States Track Coaches Association and Mondo Surfacing selects and presents the award annually to a top coach in each of the eight NCAA Division III men's cross country regions.

Diemer, who recently completed his 14th season as head coach of the Knights, guided Calvin College to a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Division III Championship held Nov. 20 in Winneconne, Wis. The Knights scored 164 points to record their second straight top-four finish at the NCAA Division III Championship. They also had one All-American at the event.

Calvin College qualified as a team entrant for the NCAA Division III Championship by winning the 29-team Great Lakes Regional held Nov. 13. The Knights placed five runners in the top 17 individual finishes at the Great Lakes Regional to win the meet by 52 points over second-place Anderson University (Ind.).

In addition to its title at the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional, Calvin College also won the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Jamboree, University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Invitational and the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championship during the 1999 season. The MIAA title for Calvin College was its 13th in as many seasons.

Diemer, who guided Calvin College to a second-place finish in 1998 and a third-place finish in 1989 at the NCAA Division III Championships, is a graduate of the University of Michigan.

Nancy Meyer of Calvin College was named the 1999 NCAA Division III Great Lakes Region Women's Cross County Coach of the Year.
