Nancy Meyer of Calvin College (Mich.) has been named the 1999 NCAA Division III Great Lakes Region Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year. The United States Track Coaches Association and Mondo Surfacing selects and presents the award annually to a top coach in each of the eight NCAA Division III women's cross country regions. Meyer, who recently completed her 13th season as head coach of the Knights, guided Calvin College to a first-place finish at the NCAA Division III Championship held Nov. 20 in Winneconne, Wis. The Knights scored 85 points and had three All-America performances at the event to claim their second straight NCAA Division III title. Middlebury College (Vt.) finished second at the NCAA Division III Championship with 119 points. Calvin College qualified as a team entrant for the NCAA Division III Championship by winning the 29-team Great Lakes Regional held Nov. 13. The Knights placed five runners in the top 12 individual finishes at the Great Lakes Regional to win the meet by 113 points over second-place Baldwin-Wallace College (Ohio). In addition to its title at the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional, Calvin College also won the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Invitational, Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Jamboree, Olivet Nazarene University Invitational and the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championship during the 1999 season. The MIAA title for Calvin College was its 12th in as many seasons. Meyer, who has guided Calvin College to a seven top-four finishes at the NCAA Division III Championship, is a 1978 graduate of Calvin College. Brian Diemer of Calvin College was named the 1999 NCAA Division III Great Lakes Region Men's Cross County Coach of the Year. |
