Rick Witt of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point has been named the 1999 NCAA Division III Midwest Region Men's Cross Country Co-Coach of the Year. The United States Track Coaches Association and Mondo Surfacing selects and presents the award annually to a top coach in each of the eight NCAA Division III men's cross country regions. He shares this year's Midwest Region coaching honor with Al Carius of North Central College (Ill.). Witt, who recently completed his 22nd season as head coach of the Pointers, guided the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point to a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Division III Championship held Nov. 20 in Winneconne, Wis. The Pointers totaled 225 points and had two All-Americans at the event. The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point qualified as a team entrant for the NCAA Division III Championship by finishing second at the 28-team Midwest Regional held Nov. 13. The Pointers landed one of the five automatic entries to the NCAA Division III Championship by scoring 66 points and placing five runners in the top 22 individual finishes at the Midwest Regional. North Central College won the Midwest Regional with 53 points. In addition to its regional and national performances, the
University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point also won the St. Olaf College
Invitational and finished second at the Carthage College Invitational
during the 1999 season. The Pointers were a third-place finisher
at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship.Witt,
who has led the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point to a top-seven
finish at the NCAA Division III Championship the last four years,
is a 1977 graduate of the University of Northern Iowa. |
