Sue Addison of Wheaton College (Ill.) has been named the 1999 NCAA Division III Midwest Region Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year. The United States Track Coaches Association and Mondo Surfacing selects and presents the award annually to a top coach in each of the eight NCAA Division III women's cross country regions. Addison, who recently completed her third season as head coach of the Crusaders, guided Wheaton College to a 13th-place finish at the NCAA Division III Championship held Nov. 20 in Winneconne, Wis. It was the first appearance for Wheaton College as a team entrant at the NCAA Division III Championship in school annals. Wheaton College qualified as a team entrant for the NCAA Division III Championship by finishing third at the 31-team Midwest Regional held Nov. 13. The Crusaders landed one of the five automatic entries to the NCAA Division III Championship by scoring 122 points and placing five runners in the top 36 individual finishes at the Midwest Regional. The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh won the Midwest Regional with 58 points. In addition to its regional and national performances, Wheaton College also won the Elmhurst College Invitational, North Central College Invitational, Beloit College Invitational, Millikin University Invitational and the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Championship during the 1999 season. The CCIW title was the first for Wheaton College in 10 years. Addison, who previously coached women's cross country at Florida State University, Brown University (R.I.) and the University of Colorado, is a 1978 graduate of Michigan State University. Al Carius of North Central College (Ill.) and Rick Witt of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point shared the 1999 NCAA Division III Midwest Region Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year honors. |
