TUFTS' BRANWEN SMITH-KING NAMED
NEW ENGLAND REGION CROSS COUNTRY COACH OF THE YEAR

Branwen Smith-King of Tufts University (Mass.) has been named the 1999 NCAA Division III New England Region Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year. The United States Track Coaches Association and Mondo Surfacing selects and presents the award annually to a top coach in each of the eight NCAA Division III women's cross country regions.

Smith-King, who recently completed her 17th season as head coach of the Jumbos, guided Tufts University to an 11th-place finish at the NCAA Division III Championship held Nov. 20 in Winneconne, Wis. The Jumbos had two All-Americans at the event.

Tufts University qualified as a team entrant for the NCAA Division III Championship by placing third at the 37-team New England Regional held Nov. 13. The Jumbos, who placed sixth at their conference (New England Small College Athletic Conference) championship, stunned several schools at the New England Regional by placing third and taking the final berth for the national meet.

Smith-King, who led this year's squad to the school's first appearance as a team entrant at the NCAA Division III Championship, is a graduate of Springfield College (Mass.).

Peter Thomas of Keene State College (N.H.) was named the 1999 NCAA Division III New England Region Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year.
