EMORY'S JOHN CURTIN NAMED
SOUTH-SOUTHEAST REGION CROSS COUNTRY COACH OF THE YEAR

John Curtin of Emory University (Ga.) has been named the 1999 NCAA Division III South/Southeast Region Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year. The United States Track Coaches Association and Mondo Surfacing selects and presents the award annually to a top
coach in each of the eight NCAA Division III men's cross country regions.

Curtin, who recently completed his 15th season as head coach of the Eagles, guided
Emory University to a 23rd-place finish at the NCAA Division III Championship held Nov. 20 in Winneconne, Wis. The Eagles qualified as a team entrant for the NCAA Division III Championship by winning the 19-team South/Southeast Regional held Nov. 13. The Eagles
won the South/Southeast Regional by 62 points over Mary Washington College (Va.) and swept the top three individual finishes.

In addition to its title at the NCAA Division III South/Southeast Regional, Emory University also won the six-team University of the South Invitational and the 11-team Georgia State University Invitational during the 1999 season.

Curtin, who has guided Emory University to five appearances at the NCAA Division III Championship and a pair of regional titles, is a 1974 graduate of Drake University (Iowa).

Curtin also was named the 1999 NCAA Division III South/Southeast Region Women's Coach of the Year after guiding the Eagles to a regional title and a 23rd-place finish at the NCAA Division III Championship. Curtin was the only person to receive both coaching awards.
