the second-highest point total in the 17-year history of
the event, the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's track and
field team won the NCAA Division III Indoor Championship
held Friday and Saturday (March 9-10) at the University
of Wisconsin-Oshkosh's Kolf Sports Center. The title was the third in a row for Wheaton College, which became the fourth different school to win three consecutive NCAA Division III indoor championships. Other champions for three straight years were the University of Massachusetts-Boston from 1985-87, Christopher Newport University (Va.) from 1988-90 and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh from 1994-96. No school has ever won the meet four straight years. Wheaton College scored 63 points en route to its championship, including first-place finishes in the triple jump, 400 meter dash and the 1,600 meter relay. The Lyons came within three points of tying the meet scoring record, a count of 66 points tabulated by Christopher Newport University in 1988. The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse finished second in the field of 80 schools with 35 points, while Williams College (Mass.) was third with 26, the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point fourth with 21 and Lincoln University (Pa.) and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh fifth with 18 each.
