Scott Tappa, The Oshkosh Northwestern The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's track and field team is shooting for its third consecutive NCAA Division III indoor championship this weekend, and while the Lyons face plenty of competition, they're bringing a stacked roster themselves. Wheaton College brings nine qualifiers in 14 events to the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh's Kolf Sports Center, led by junior Shimera Daniels. Daniels is scheduled to compete in the triple jump, long jump and 55 meter dash, and is the top seed in the triple jump with a mark of 38 feet, 7 inches. She took third in the triple jump at last year's indoor championships. Freshman Amber James is another multiple qualifier for Wheaton College, as the freshman holds the top seed in the 400 meter dash (57.21 seconds) and is a member of the top-seeded 1,600 meter relay team. Senior Tenille Johnson, also a member of that defending champion relay team, is the third seed in both the 400 meter dash (57.25) and 55 meter hurdles (8.17), an event in which she took second at last year's championships. Freshman Kim Jones is the third seed in the 55 meter dash (7.14) and the second seed in the long jump (19-0 3/4). Lincoln University, last year's runner-up, features one of the most electric performers at this year's event, junior Rhondale Jones. Jones is the defending champion in both the 55 meter dash and 55 meter hurdles, and is a threat to go under seven seconds in the former, eight in the latter. She will also participate in the long jump, where she is the sixth seed with an 18-6 qualifying effort. The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) sends three trophy contenders to the meet in the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse is led by Oshkosh native Jocelyn Loe, who will compete in the 55 meter dash, the long jump and the 1,600 meter relay. Ellen Findlay is the top-seeded pole vaulter, and figures to have an interesting competition with defending champion Laura Rosenberger of Eastern Mennonite University, as well as emerging Niki Riemer of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Other multiple qualifiers for the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse include Jessica Dober in the 800 meter run and the distance medley relay, Heather Kleckner in the high jump and pole vault, Lisa Mickelson in the 400 meter dash and 1,600 meter relay and Sonja Peterson in the 20 pound weight throw and shot put. The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, which won NCAA Division III indoor titles from 1994-96, has eight qualifiers for this weekend's meet. They include WIAC champions Jill Kincaid, Liz Woodworth and Crystal Bullion. Kincaid is part of the second-seeded 1,600 meter relay team, and is the fourth seed in the triple jump, in which she took fourth place last season. Woodworth, a freshman, is the second seed in the 800 meter run, while Bullion is the seventh seed in the 55 meter hurdles. Riemer is the 11th seed in the pole vault, and took third in that event last season. Carrie Danielwicz is a returning qualifier in the high jump. Other returning champions include Healy Thompson of Williams College in the shot put and Kristy Laramee of Middlebury College in the high jump. The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh is hosting the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships for the third time, with previous sponsorships in 1994 and 1997. In 1994, the NCAA Division III champion was the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, while in 1997 it was Christopher Newport University. |
