| The University of
Wisconsin-Stevens Point men's and women's swimming and
diving teams both made it two straight championships as
the Pointers swept Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference titles Saturday in Oshkosh. The Pointer men had 966 team points to finish ahead of second-place UW-La Crosse, which had 721 points. The UW-Stevens Point women's team had 836.5 points and second-place UW-Eau Claire had 727.5 points. UW-Stevens Point set three WIAC records in Saturday's competition as Christine Sammons set a record in the 200 breaststroke, breaking the record in preliminaries and again in the finals with a time of 2:24.42. It gave Sammons three WIAC titles for the weekend. On the men's side, Randy Boelk set a record in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:50.63. He also was a member of the record-setting 400 freestyle relay team with a time of 3:06.80. The victories gave him 23 career titles, including all seven races he entered over the weekend. Other winners on the men's side included Anthony Harris in the 100 freestyle at 47.34 seconds. On the women's side, Mary Thone edged teammate Berit Fahrner in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:10.98. The Pointers' 400 freestyle relay also won with an NCAA Division III "A" cut time of 3:33.52. Alissa Bartz, Amy Rockwell, Thone and Jennifer Randall were on the winning relay. Randall was part of the most exciting race of the day, finishing second to UW-Oshkosh's Renee Porter in the 100 freestyle by one-hundreth of a second at 52.88 seconds as both swimmers eclipsed the conference record. |
