
The high jump came
down to two underclassmen as Whitworth University (Wash.)
sophomore Cody Stelzer captured the national title with
a J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium record mark of 6-11
1/2 at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Chamionship.
Stelzer advanced on his first attempt while Thiel College
(Pa.) freshman Josh Jones was second at 6-11 1/2 after converting
on his third attempt. Stelzer placed third in the high jump
a year ago.
Defending national
champion Ted McMillan of Augustana College (Ill.) finished
in third place Friday (May 23) at 6-9. McMillan was fourth
in 2006.
Alma College's (Mich.)
Taylor Jackson was a fourth-place finisher (6-8) while Christopher
Newport University's (Va.) Joseph Owens placed in fifth
place (6-8) and Illinois College's Dillon Binkley captured
sixth place (6-8). Jackson, Owens and Binkley all hit a
mark of 6-8, but their place at the championship was based
on when the made their height and the number of completed
jumps.
Also earning All-America
honors in the high jump included Anderson University's (Ind.)
Ryan Fultz and Hendrix College's (Ark.) Jerry Maldonado,
who tied for seventh place with a leap of 6-6.
