Johnny Henkins became the second straight student-athlete
from Monmouth College (Ill.) to win the pole vault Thursday
(May 22) with a mark of 16-7 1/4 at the NCAA Division III
Outdoor Track and Field Championship. Teammate Peter Sprecher,
who finished in sixth place at 15-5 1/2, captured last year's
national championship. Sprecher entered the meet with the
top qualifying mark.
Loras College's (Iowa) Kyle Calvert took second place in
the pole vault with a mark of 16-3 1/4, while Lynchburg
College's (Va.) Scott Decker captured third with a height
of 16-3 1/4. Calvert tied for seventh place a year ago.
Others earning All-America accolades included Michael Bina
of North Central College (Ill.) in fourth place with a distance
of 16-3 1/4 and Alex Tapplin of the University of Wisconsin-La
Crosse in fifth with a mark of 15-11 1/4.
Peter Sprecher of Monmouth grabbed sixth place at 15-5
1/2 whle Scott Howard of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville
took seventh with a jump of 15-5 1/2.
Steve Sulfridge of Augustana College (Ill.) tied Omari
Stephens of Massachusetts Institute of Technology for eighth
place with a 14-11 1/2 showing.
