A little bit of home stadium magic guided University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh's Terri Schwamb to a successful defense in the hammer throw at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championship on Friday (May 23).
After taking the lead after her first toss, Schwamb had four consecutive tosses with bettering marks with her fourth toss the eventual winner, 191-1, besting the field by just under nine feet.
Schwamb's title was the fourth for the powerhouse Titans throwing program in the last six years of the hammer throw. Beyond her back-to-back championships this year and in 2007, former standouts Robyn Jarocki and Deena Heins won the championship in 2004 and 2003.
Allegheny College's (Pa.) Liz Earley took second-place at 182-6, while Wartburg College's (Iowa) Jessica Bates ended in third-place at 180-10. Julie Hopson of State University of New York-Fredonia grabbed fourth-place with a fling of 178-4 and Rebecca Masephol of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh took fifth-place with a toss of 174-11 to round out the top-five.
Also enjoying All-American performances were Aline Thomas of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a sixth-place throw of 170-5 and Liz Ulferts of Loras College (Iowa) with an eighth-place heave of 168-11.
Ellie Sitek of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh grabbed the Titans' 16th point in the event with a seventh-place launch of 169-11.
