University of Wisconsin-Whitewater pummeled the scoreboard with
multiple runs in seven of eight innings to defeat The College of
St. Scholastica (Minn.), 21-13, in the championship game of the
NCAA Division III Oshkosh Regional Baseball Tournament held Saturday
(May 17) at E.J. Schneider Field in Oshkosh.
UW-Whitewater's
11th NCAA Division III postseason appearance resulted in its fourth
trip to the World Series. The Warhawks (38-8) open World Series
play against Linfield College (Ore.) at 4:30 p.m. on Friday (May
23) at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute,
Wis.
UW-Whitewater
tallied 21-plus runs for the second time in three regional games
by scoring five times in the sixth inning, three in the second,
third, fifth and eighth and two in the first and fourth. The College
of St. Scholastica (35-6) counted seven runs in the fifth inning,
three in the seventh, two in the first and one in the fourth.
The College
of St. Scholastica used a Mike Lewis single to take a 2-0 lead in
the top of the first inning. UW-Whitewater tied the game in the
bottom half of the frame on run-scoring singles by Thomas Corcoran
and Kevin Zalnis.
The Warhawks
took advantage of two Saint errors to tally three runs in the second
inning. A two-run home run by Ben Kuhlmann and solo homer by Jeff
Donovan gave UW-Whitewater an 8-2 advantage in the third.
After the Saints
scored on a Joey Link double in the fourth inning, Donovan doubled
home a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame to give the
Warhawks a 10-3 lead.
The College of St. Scholastica came back to tie the contest with
seven unearned runs in the top of the fifth inning. Kyle Wojtysiak
hit a two-run double before a two-out error kept the frame going.
Steve Kraushaar completed the rally with a two-run home run that
equaled the score at 10.
UW-Whitewater tacked on three more runs in the fifth inning to regain
the lead. Billy Johnson’s two-run single put the Warhawks
in front, 13-10.
Five runs by
the Warhawks in the bottom of the sixth inning put them ahead 18-10.
Runs scored on an error, hit-by-pitch and fielder’s choice
along with singles from Zalnis and Johnson.
The College of St. Scholastica got three runs back in the seventh
inning on an error and a two-run single by Darrin Carlson. A wild
pitch and Greg Harder’s two-run single in the eighth posted
UW-Whitewater’s last three runs.
The Warhawks finished with 18 hits, including four by Johnson and
three by both Donovan and Zalnis. Corcoran, Ben Prather and Jordan
Stine added two hits apiece.
Mike Lewis totaled
three of the Saints' 13 hits, while Kraushaar and Sean Claugherty
each had two.
Jason Hooper,
the third of four UW-Whitewater pitchers, earned the victory. Hooper
(1-0) entered the contest in the fifth inning and pitched six outs
while allowing three runs and three hits. Joe Munn started for the
Warhawks and pitched into the fourth inning before being replaced
by Greg Reik. Aaron Dott pitched the last 2.1 innings, retiring
all seven batters he faced.
The College
of St. Scholastica pitched five players, with Josh Hawkins (3-2)
taking the loss after entering the game in the third inning. He
allowed seven runs and five hits in relief of starter Brandon Fritz
and Jake Gaub. Ben Sartori and Jake Wendland combined to hurl the
final three innings for the Saints.
The loss ended
The College of St. Scholastica's fifth NCAA Division III postseason
visit.
Named to the 11-member All-Tournament Team were Donovan, Johnson,
Zalnis, Adam Dominick and Mike Jacobson of UW-Whitewater, Claugherty,
Kraushaar and Blake Eller of The College of St. Scholastica, Ryan
Fahey and Lonnie Robinson of the University of St. Thomas (Minn.)
and Brad Demmin of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Eller was
selected as the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. |

Thanks
to the continued hot hitting of Blake Eller, The College of St.
Scholastica (Minn.) advanced to the championship game of the NCAA
Division III Oshkosh Regional Baseball Tournament with a 7-1 victory
over the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) on Friday (May 16) at
E.J. Schneider Field in Oshkosh.
Eller totaled three hits, four runs batted in and two runs scored
to lead the Saints (35-5). He hit a three-run home run in the fourth
inning and a run-scoring single in the eighth. Eller has helped
The College of St. Scholastica to a 3-1 regional tournament record
by registering 12 hits in 21 at-bats.
The College of St. Scholastica started the scoring with a Kyle Wojtysiak
double in the second inning. The Saints went ahead 2-0 after scoring
on a fielder's choice in the third.
Mike Lewis launched
a solo home run to lead off the fifth inning for a 6-0 Saints’
lead. The University of St. Thomas (34-9) responded in the top of
the eighth inning with a solo home run by Reece Collins.
Both pitchers threw complete games, with Steve Gerten tossing nine
innings for his fifth win in as many decisions. He allowed one run
on seven hits while striking out four batters.
Erik Olson took the loss for the University of St. Thomas, which
completed its 14th NCAA Division III postseason appearance. Olson
surrendered six earned runs on 10 hits over eight innings to fall
to 5-2 on the year.
The Saints, making their fifth NCAA Division III postseason trip,
finished with 10 hits. Wojtysiak totaled three hits, while Steve
Kraushaar added two.
Two of the Tommies’ seven hits came from Louie Salmen.

The
College of St. Scholastica (Minn.) took an early 7-0 lead on its
way to a 9-4 victory over Carthage College (Wis.) in the NCAA Division
III Oshkosh Regional Baseball Tournament on Friday (May 16) at E.J.
Schneider Field in Oshkosh.
The Saints (34-5) posted three runs in the opening inning and two
in each of the fourth and fifth frames.
Darrin Carlson got the scoring started with a two-run homer in the
first inning. Joey Link added a run-scoring single for a 3-0 advantage.
The College of St. Scholastica got a run-scoring single by Mike
Lewis and a run-scoring double from Steve Gerten in the fourth inning.
An error and a Sean Claugherty run-scoring single made it 7-0 in
the fifth.
Carthage College (36-10) recorded a pair of runs in both the seventh
and ninth innings. Will Hodges launched a pinch-hit, two-run home
run in the seventh and Seth Romano completed the scoring with a
two-run single in the ninth.
The Saints also scored on a Blake Eller solo home run in the seventh
inning and a Gerten single in the eighth frame.
Adian Kummet improved to 8-2 with the nine-inning, complete-game
victory. He allowed two earned runs on 11 hits and struck out eight.
The pitching loss went to Mario Perez, who fell to 7-1 after giving
up five earned runs on 11 hits in four innings. Corey Richardson
and Mike Maher finished out the game for the Red Men, who completed
their 15th NCAA Division III postseason appearance.
The Saints, making their fifth trip to the NCAA Division III postseason,
bashed out 16 hits, including four by Eller and two each from Claugherty,
Gerten, Link, Kyle Wojtysiak and Mike Lewis.
Carthage College finished with 11 base hits, including three from
Tyler Creekmore and two apiece by Boe Baitinger, Jason Acevado and
Romano.

St. Thomas (Minn.) (34-8) at 4 p.m. on Friday (May 16) in an elimination

The
University of Wisconsin-Whitewater advanced to the championship
game of the NCAA Division III Oshkosh Regional Baseball Tournament
with a 10-inning, 4-1 victory over the University of St. Thomas
(Minn.) on Friday (May 16) at E.J. Schneider Field in Oshkosh.
The Warhawks (38-8) used three runs on four hits in the top of the
10th inning to win the contest. After a single and hit-by-pitch,
Mike Kenseth doubled in a run to take a 2-1 lead. Ben Kuhlmann followed
with a two-run single to make it 4-1.
An error helped the University of St. Thomas (34-8) take a 1-0 advantage
in the third frame. Another UW-Whitewater fielding miscue allowed
the run to score.
UW-Whitewater got hit by a pitch and reached on an error to tie
the game in the fifth inning. Kenseth’s sacrifice fly equaled
the score, 1-1.
Not to be outdone by his team’s clutch hitting, Warhawks pitcher
Mike Jacobson picked up the victory with a 10-inning complete game
to improve to 8-2. Jacobson allowed one unearned run on four hits
and struck out six.
Matt Schuld took the pitching loss for the Tommies, giving up one
earned run on four hits while striking out six in nine innings.
Schuld fell to 7-3 while Dan Leslie surrendered two runs in one
inning of work for the University of St. Thomas.
UW-Whitewater out-hit the Tommies, 7-4. The Warhawks, making their
11th NCAA Division III postseason appearance, received two hits
apiece from Kuhlmann and Thomas Corcoran.
The University of St. Thomas, which is appearing in its 14th NCAA
Division III postseason, lost for the first time in 14 games.
The Tommies move on to play in an elimination game against The College
of St. Scholastica (Minn.) (34-5) at 4 p.m. on Friday (May 16).

University of Wisconsin-Whitewater scored 14 runs during the third
and fourth innings to defeat Carthage College (Wis.), 24-3, and
advance in the NCAA Division III Oshkosh Regional on Thursday (May
15) at E.J. Schneider Field in Oshkosh.
The Warhawks (37-8) tallied eight times on five hits and two errors
in the third frame. Ben Prather singled home a pair of runs before
Joe Munn blasted a grand slam to make it 7-0.
UW-Whitewater used five hits and another Red Men error to mark six
runs in the fourth inning. Billy Johnson and Jeff Donovan each hit
a two-run single, with Donovan’s hit giving the Warhawks a
14-0 advantage.
Carthage College got on the board in the top of the eighth inning
with three runs on five hits. The Red Men scored on singles by Steve
Coughlin, Mark Sobol and Mike McGuire. McGuire finished with three
of Carthage College’s 10 base hits.
The pitching win went to Adam Dominick, who did not allow a run
on two hits while striking out five in five innings. Greg Donovan
threw two scoreless frames and Randy Johnson finished the game.
Trace Ruffie gave up nine earned runs while walking five in 3.1
innings to take the loss for the Red Men. Bryan Kieffer, Dan Dahm
and Ty Heegeman closed out the game on the mound.
The Warhawks set season-high marks for runs scored and base hits.
UW-Whitewater’s 23 hits included four by Mike Kenseth and
three from Prather.
UW-Whitewater continues regional play against the University of
St. Thomas (Minn.) (34-7) at 10 a.m. on Friday (May 16). Carthage

Robinson retired the first 17 batters he faced as the University
of St. Thomas (Minn.) advanced in the NCAA Division III Oshkosh
Regional with a 3-1 win over the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh
on Thursday (May 15) at E.J. Schneider Field in Oshkosh.
Robinson allowed one run on four hits to earn the complete-game
victory. The Tommies (34-7) scored a pair of runs in the opening
inning and added one more in the seventh.
After a UW-Oshkosh (29-11) error to leadoff the contest, Chris Bullis
ripped a run-scoring double to take the lead. Tom Wippler singled
home a run with two outs to make it a 2-0 advantage.
The Tommies’ final score came when Brian Schmitz walked with
the bases loaded to force in a run.
The Titans posted their lone tally in the ninth inning on a Brad
Demmin double. Demmin extended his hitting streak to 27 games and
finished with two of UW-Oshkosh’s four base hits. Brock Wetenkamp
recorded the other two hits for the Titans.
Evan Matson gave up two unearned runs on five hits in three innings
to take the pitching loss. UW-Oshkosh finished the game with Curt
Hendricks, Ryan Kuepper and Travis Helland on the mound.
The University of St. Thomas totaled 10 hits, including three from
Bullis and two by Matt McQuillan.
UW-Oshkosh finished its 24th NCAA Division III postseason appearance.

Eller and Brian Marshik combined for eight hits and nine runs batted
in as The College of St. Scholastica (Minn.) stayed alive in the
NCAA Division III Oshkosh Regional with a 15-7 victory over Knox
College (Ill.) on Thursday (May 15) at E.J. Schneider Field in Oshkosh.
Eller finished 4-for-6 at the plate, including a run-scoring single
in the first inning, a two-run double in the third, a two-run single
in the fifth and a run-scoring triple in the eighth.
Marshik ended up 4-for-4 with a run-scoring bunt single in the third
inning, a run-scoring single in the seventh and a two-run single
in the eighth.
The College of St. Scholastica (33-5) tallied two runs in each of
the first, second, third and fifth frames to amass an 8-4 lead.
Sean Claugherty launched a two-run home run in the first inning
to start the scoring.
The Prairie Fire (15-25) scored one run in each of the second, third,
fourth and fifth innings, including a run-scoring single by Adam
Estergard in the fourth and a run-scoring single from Greg Leibach
in the fifth.
Knox College received a two-run homer from Luke Hunter in the seventh
inning. The Prairie Fire’s 11 hits featured three by Leibach.
The Saints put the game away in the eighth inning by scoring five
runs on four hits. Jake Gaub tripled to bring in the first two runs
of the frame.
Jeff Adams followed Matt Lewis on the mound for The College of St.
Scholastica and earned the win. Adams allowed three runs in two
innings while Dan Lanari gave up one run in the final three frames
to pick up the save.
The Prairie Fire’s Jordan Ball took the pitching loss, surrendering
four runs on seven hits in 1.1 innings. Sammy Almohandis tossed
six frames and Justin Cutter recorded the last five outs.
Knox College wrapped up its first ever NCAA Division III postseason

pair of two-out, two-run doubles pushed Carthage College (Wis.)
past the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, 6-3, in a first round
game of the NCAA Division III Oshkosh Regional Baseball Tournament
held Wednesday (May 14) at E.J. Schneider Field in Oshkosh.
UW-Oshkosh (29-10)
took a 3-0 lead after scoring once in the first inning and twice
in the second. The Titans scored on Brad Demmin's single in the
first and Nolan Fadness' sacrifice fly and Derek Leighton's single
in the second. Brad Demmin, who later added a single in the seventh
inning, extended his hitting streak to 26 consecutive games.
Following a
solo home run by David Hermes in the second inning, Carthage College
(36-8) tallied four runs in the third on two-run doubles by Jason
Acevado and Mike McGuire.
The Red Men,
who are playing in their 15th NCAA Division III regional, scored
their final run thanks to a UW-Oshkosh error in the eighth inning.
UW-Oshkosh’s
six hits featured two apiece from Brad Demmin and Derek Hiroskey.
Carthage College
totaled seven base hits, including two from Chris Shannon.
Both pitchers
threw complete games, with the Red Men’s Jacob Husing earning
his seventh win of the season against one defeat. He allowed two
earned runs while striking out nine batters and walking five.
The pitching
loss went to UW-Oshkosh's Ryan Demmin, who allowed five earned runs
while striking out six batters. Ryan Demmin owns a 6-2 record on
the mound.
UW-Oshkosh is
appearing in its 24th NCAA Division III regional. Wednesday's game
was the first postseason encounter between the two teams since 1995.
UW-Oshkosh returns
to action against the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) at 1 p.m.
on Thursday (May 15). The Tommies own a 33-7 record. Carthage College
faces the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (36-8) at 4 p.m. on

Zalnis homered twice and drove in five runs to power the University
of Wisconsin-Whitewater to a 7-4 victory over The College of St.
Scholastica (Minn.) in a first round game of the NCAA Division III
Oshkosh Regional Baseball Tournament held Wednesday (May 14) at
E.J. Schneider Field in Oshkosh.
Zalnis went
3-for-4 at the plate, hitting a run-scoring single in the first
inning, a solo home run in the third and a three-run home run in
the seventh. The round trippers were his 15th and 16th of the season.
UW-Whitewater
(36-8) also got a run-scoring single from Ben Prather in the opening
inning to take a 2-0 lead.
The College of St. Scholastica (32-5) trailed 3-0 before scoring
four runs on four hits in the sixth inning. The Saints benefited
from a run-scoring double by Sean Claugherty and a three-run home
run by Mike Lewis.
Ben Kuhlmann
and Jeff Donovan singled to start off the Warhawks’ response
in the seventh inning. The Warhawks went ahead for good on Zalnis'
three-run home run. The Warhawks closed their scoring when Cory
Trepanier tacked on a pinch-hit solo home run in the eighth inning.
Kuhlman delivered three of the Warhawks’ 12 hits while Donovan
added two.
The College of St. Scholastica, appearing in its fifth NCAA Division
III regional, finished with nine hits, including three by Claugherty.
Gregg Reik pitched
the final 2.1 innings to earn the win for 11-time NCAA Division
III postseason participant UW-Whitewater. Reik didn't allow a hit
or a run, improving his record to 3-0 on the season. Aaron Dott
tossed the first 6.2 innings for the Warhawks. He allowed four runs
and nine hits while striking out nine batters and walking one.
Peter Burg threw all eight innings for the Saints in a losing effort.
He suffered his first loss of the season against 10 wins by surrendering
five earned runs and 12 hits. Burg struck out five batters as The
College of St. Scholastica suffered its first loss in 14 games.
UW-Whitewater
advances to play Carthage College (Wis.) (36-8) at 4 p.m. on Thursday
(May 15). The College of St. Scholastica faces Knox College (Ill.)
(15-24) at 10 a.m. on Thursday. |

Fahey threw seven strong innings to earn the win as the University
of St. Thomas (Minn.) defeated Knox College (Ill.), 15-1, in a first
round contest of the NCAA Division III Oshkosh Regional Baseball
Tournament held Wednesday (May 14) at E.J. Schneider Field in Oshkosh.
Fahey allowed
just three hits and did not walk a batter in the contest as he faced
just 22 batters, one over the minimum. He improved his record to
4-0 on the season and the Tommies to 33-7. Brady Gibbs pitched the
eighth inning and Zach Neubauer the ninth.
The University of St. Thomas scored five times in both the fourth
and eighth innings. The Tommies' fourth inning featured three hits,
including a three-run home run by Chris Bullis, and two Knox College
(15-24) errors. In the eighth, the University of St. Thomas totaled
three hits, including a two-run double by Mark Boland, and benefited
from three Knox College miscues.
Another one
of the Prairie Fire’s seven errors helped the Tommies in the
sixth inning. Matt Pexa, who had four hits in the game, knocked
in a run with a single. Brian Schmitz’s run-scoring single
put the University of St. Thomas ahead, 10-0.
Knox College,
which was playing its first NCAA Division III postseason contest,
scored its lone run of the game in the eighth inning. Greg Leibach
led off the frame with a double and later scored on a sacrifice
fly by John Curtin.
Colin Davis
took the pitching loss for the Prairie Fire, giving up six runs
in 3.2 innings. He was followed on the mound by Spencer McNeill,
Tyler Hopfauf and Aaron Juarez.
The 17 hits
for the University of St. Thomas also featured three from Fleming
and two apiece from Bullis, Boland and Matt McQuillan. The Tommies
are appearing in their 14th NCAA Division III regional tournament.
Knox College
totaled five hits, including two by Leibach.
Knox College will face The College of St. Scholastica (Minn.) (32-5)
at 10 a.m. on Thursday (May 15). The University of St. Thomas takes
on the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh (29-10) at 1 p.m. on Thursday. |
