The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater pummeled the scoreboard with multiple runs in seven of eight innings to defeat The College of St. Scholastica (Minn.), 21-13, in the championship game of the NCAA Division III Oshkosh Regional Baseball Tournament held Saturday (May 17) at E.J. Schneider Field in Oshkosh.

UW-Whitewater's 11th NCAA Division III postseason appearance resulted in its fourth trip to the World Series. The Warhawks (38-8) open World Series play against Linfield College (Ore.) at 4:30 p.m. on Friday (May 23) at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute, Wis.

UW-Whitewater tallied 21-plus runs for the second time in three regional games by scoring five times in the sixth, three in the second, third, fifth and eighth and two in the first and fourth. The College of St. Scholastica (35-6) counted seven runs in the fifth, three in the seventh, two in the first and one in the fourth.

The College of St. Scholastica used a Mike Lewis single to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. UW-Whitewater tied the game in the bottom half of the frame on run-scoring singles by Thomas Corcoran and Kevin Zalnis.

The Warhawks took advantage of two Saint errors to tally three runs in the second inning. A two-run home run by Ben Kuhlmann and solo homer by Jeff Donovan gave UW-Whitewater an 8-2 advantage in the third.

After the Saints scored on a Joey Link double in the fourth inning, Donovan doubled home a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame to give the Warhawks a 10-3 lead. (More)
