Win Ninth Straight WIAC Title

UW-Stevens Point scored 928 points to win the team title at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Men's Swimming and Diving Championship held Thursday through Saturday (Feb. 21-23) at UW-Oshkosh's Albee Hall.

UW-La Crosse finished second with 794 points, while UW-Eau Claire took third with 619, UW-Whitewater fourth with 463, UW-Oshkosh fifth with 241 and UW-River Falls sixth with 179.

Winning events on Saturday for UW-Stevens Point were Chase Gross in the 100-yard freestyle with a WIAC record time of 45.77 and Rob Donisch in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:54.69. Both Gross and Donisch became three-time champions in their respective events.

UW-La Crosse's Michael Hruska won the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:07.07. The Eagles' 400-yard freestyle relay team of Tony Wolff, Christopher Boyle, Michael Beilman and Matthew Diehl finished first in 3:05.85.

UW-Eau Claire's Jon Poppele won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:56.14 and UW-Whitewater's Matt Mintz captured the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:40.76.

Gross was named Swimmer of the Meet after winning the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard freestyle and being a member of the Pointers' winning 200 and 400-yard medley relay teams and 800-yard freestyle relay team. Gross, a junior, has been a part of 16 WIAC individual and relay titles.

Jacob Chadderdon won his second consecutive Diver of the Meet award after finishing first in the three-meter diving and second in the one-meter diving.

UW-Stevens Point's mentor Al Boelk was named the WIAC Coach of the Year. The Pointers' Willie Clapp earned the Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete of the Year award.

Two-Time Defending Champion Pointers

UW-La Crosse won its fifth title in seven years at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women's Swimming and Diving Championship held Thursday through Saturday (Feb. 21-23) at UW-Oshkosh's Albee Hall.

UW-La Crosse scored 993 points to take home its 10th overall title. Two-time defending champion
UW-Stevens Point followed in second place with 905 points, UW-Eau Claire in third with 529.5, UW-Whitewater in fourth with 390, UW-Oshkosh in fifth with 257.5 and UW-River Falls in sixth with 188.

Winning events on Saturday for UW-La Crosse were Amanda Medendorp in the three-meter diving competition for the third consecutive year with 442.30 points, Chelsea Hoff in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 52.26 and the 400-yard freestyle relay team in a time of 3:32.53. Members of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team were Hoff, Brianna Peyer, Danielle Rux and Clare Hathaway.

UW-Stevens Point had Jennifer Bennett win the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 2:12.15, Abby Strobel nab the 200-yard backstroke in a WIAC-record time of 2:05.70 and Jennifer Bussey snag the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 2:25.38.

UW-Eau Claire's Amanda Kroger won the 1,650-yard freestyle in a time of 17:58.83 to round out the event winners on Saturday.

Medendorp was named Diver of the Meet for the third straight season as she captured the one and three-meter diving events. It was the third consecutive year that she has won both diving contests.

Hoff received the Swimmer of the Meet award by winning the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke. She also swam on the Eagles' first-place 200-yard freestyle relay, 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard medley relay teams.

UW-La Crosse's Rich Pein was named Coach of the Year, UW-Oshkosh's Sarah Schettle received the July Kruckman Scholar-Athlete of the Year award.
