Running to the lowest point total in the 32-year history of the event, the North Central College (Ill.) completely dominated the NCAA Division III Men's Cross Country Midwest Regional on Saturday (Nov. 14) at Lake Breese Golf Club in Winneconne, Wis.
North Central College placed five participants in the top seven to score 21 points to win the regional crown for the second consecutive year and for the 22nd time overall. The previous low was 26 points by the 1993 North Central College squad.
UW-La Crosse finished with 108 points, joining North Central College as a qualified for the NCAA Division III Championship next Saturday (Nov. 21) in Beachwood, Ohio.
The top 10 team finishes continued for third-place Washington University (Mo.) with 118 points, fourth-place UW-Platteville with 124, fifth-place UW-Eau Claire with 169, sixth-place UW-Stevens Point with 173, seventh-place Augustana College (Ill.) with 175, eighth-place UW-Whitewater with 181, ninth-place UW-River Falls with 300 and 10th-place University of Chicago (Ill.) with 330.
North Central College registered a one-two punch as Michael Spain won the event in a time of 24:17 and Ryan Carrigan took second-place in a time of 24:23. The Cardinals also took the fifth through seven place results as Neal Klein captured fifth place in a time of 24:33, Kyle Brady sixth place in a time of 24:35 and Nathaniel Hird seventh place in a time of 24:41. North Central College also had Sean Carlson finish in 12th in a time of 24:50 and Nathan Rutz in 17th in a time of 24:54.
UW-La Crosse was led by the fourth-place result of Connor Lonning in a time of 24:29. The Eagles had two other top-15 results with Paul Moran taking 10th-place in a time of 24:46 and Dallas Vincent 14th-place in a time of 24:51.
Individual results continued with Jason Garvens of UW-Platteville in a third-place time of 24:25, Chris Zook of Augustana College (Ill.) in a eighth-place time of 24:42, Christopher Wirtz of UW-Eau Claire in a ninth-place time of 24:45, Nate Stymiest of UW-Oshkosh in an 11th-place time of 24:49, Jason Lindelof of UW-Superior in a 13th-place time of 24:51 and Patrick Klein of UW-Platteville in a 15th-place time of 24:52.
Besides team entrants North Central College and UW-La Crosse, Garvens, Zook, Wirtz, Stymiest, Lindelof, Klein and Michael Burnstein who finished in 16th-place in a time of 24:52 automatically qualified as individuals for the NCAA Division III Championship.
Additional team and individual selections to the NCAA Division III Championship from the Midwest Regional will be announced Sunday (Nov. 15).
