Day Two Recap
Bobby Riley won three events and Paul Zdroik two to lead UW-La Crosse to a first-place finish at the WIAC Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championship held Friday and Saturday (May 1-2) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium in Oshkosh.
UW-La Crosse tallied 176.5 points to capture its 19th straight title and 45th overall. UW-Stevens Point finished second with 157 points, UW-Whitewater third with 129.5, UW-Oshkosh fourth with 106, UW-Platteville fifth with 99, UW-Eau Claire sixth with 89, UW-Stout seventh with 61, UW-River Falls eighth with 38 and UW-Superior ninth with two.
Riley was named the Field Performer of the Meet after winning the shot put with a toss of 57-0 1/4 and the discus with a cast of 171-4 on Saturday and the javelin with a throw of 178-1 on Friday. He previously won the shot put in 2007.
Zdroik won the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:05.92 on Saturday after winning the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a performance of 9:15.01 on Friday.
Other event winners for the Eagles on Saturday were Zach Wilhelmy in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:54.29, Paul Yerhot in the 400-meter run with a time of 49.30 and David Stauder in the high jump with a leap of 6-8 3/4.
Keith Ingram of UW-Stevens Point was voted the Track Performer of the Meet after winning both the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash with times of 10.89 and 21.72, respectively.
UW-Stevens Point also had Mike Dellemann win the decathlon with 5,992 points and the quartet of Nick Dax, Brad Koback, Adam Lang and Pat Leonard capture the 1,600-meter relay with a time of 3:19.47. UW-Stevens Point's Dom Meyer won the 10,000-meter run on day one of the championship.
UW-Platteville picked up two victories in the hurdles when Andy Melby won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.66 and Mitch Spees won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 54.96.
Other events winners on Saturday included James Simms of UW-Oshkosh in the triple jump with a mark of 48-1 1/4 and Matt Kovnesky of UW-Whitewater in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:56.39.
UW-Stout's
quartet of Daniel Drewek, Sam Flood, Dan Strong and Kendall Wade won the 400-meter relay with a time of 41.29.
Rounding out the performers who won titles on Friday were Cory Lockridge of UW-Whitewater in the long jump, Sam Johnson of UW-Eau Claire in the hammer throw, Drewek in the pole vault and Willy Kaul, Dan Rammer, Nate Stymiest and Ben Wizner of UW-Oshkosh in the 3,200-meter relay.
Brad Peterson of UW-La Crosse claimed the WIAC's Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete of the Year award.
Day One Recap
UW-Whitewater grabbed the early lead after the first day of action at the WIAC Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championship held Friday (May 1) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium in Oshkosh.
A total of seven events were contested, with UW-La Crosse winning two and UW-Eau Claire, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Stout and UW-Whitewater one each. UW-Whitewater totaled 56.5 points on the day, with its lone first-place finish coming from Cory Lockridge's leap of 22-5 in the long jump. The Warhawks scored 23 of their points in the long jump competition.
UW-La Crosse, which is seeking its 19th straight WIAC title, is in second place with 50.5 points. UW-Stevens Point is in third place with 45 points, UW-Eau Claire fourth with 37, UW-Platteville fifth with 34, UW-Stout sixth with 25, UW-Oshkosh seventh with 21, UW-River Falls eighth with four and UW-Superior ninth with zero.
UW-La Crosse benefited from the first-place efforts of Bobby Riley in the javelin and Paul Zdroik in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Riley recorded a distance of 178-1, while Zdroik posted a time of 9:15.01. Defending champion Andrew McGuire of UW-Oshkosh finished second to Zdroik in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:16.55.
Other individual event winners were Daniel Drewek of UW-Stout in the pole vault with a height of 16-2, Sam Johnson of UW-Eau Claire in the hammer throw with a cast of 186-4 and Dom Meyer of UW-Stevens Point in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 30:52.75. Drewek also won the pole vault at last year's championship.
UW-Oshkosh's lone first-place finish came in the 3,200-meter relay. The Titans won the event for the third consecutive year as Willy Kaul, Dan Rammer, Nate Stymiest and Ben Wizner ran to a time of 7:45.55.
Competition begins on Saturday (May 2) at 10:00 a.m. The final event is scheduled for 4:35 p.m.
