Day Two Recap

Relying on its overall depth, UW-La Crosse claimed its third straight title at the WIAC Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championship held Friday and Saturday (May 1-2) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium in Oshkosh.

UW-La Crosse won just five of the 22 events, but still managed to total a first-place score of 211 points. UW-Oshkosh finished second with 181 points, UW-Eau Claire third with 146, UW-Stevens Point fourth with 94, UW-River Falls fifth with 78, UW-Platteville sixth with 58, UW-Whitewater seventh with 50, UW-Stout eighth with 33 and UW-Superior ninth with six.

UW-La Crosse scored 22 points in the high jump and 19 points in the triple jump to pull away from a 10-point deficit after Friday's competition. The Eagles had Amy Jo Garringer win the high jump with a mark of 5-3 1/4 and Katie Fondow take the triple jump with a distance of 37-10 3/4.

UW-La Crosse also won the 400-meter relay for the sixth consecutive season as the foursome of Kailey Charlton, Katie Fondow, Ashton May and Caitlin Schetter posted a time of 48.11.

UW-Oshkosh continued its dominance in the throwing events as Ellie Sitek won the discus with a cast of 148-5 and Holly Ozanich the shot put with a launch of 44-0 3/4. Sitek was named the Field Performer of the Meet as she also took second in both the hammer throw with a fling 172-9 and the shot put with a toss of 43-0 1/2.

Brooke Bell of UW-Whitewater was awarded the Track Performer of the Meet after setting WIAC and facility records in the 200-meet dash in a time of 23.98. Bell also won the 100-meter dash in a facility record time of 11.95, dethroning two-time defending champion Elizabeth Caine of UW-Stevens Point who took second-place in a time of 12.11.

UW-Oshkosh's Ayla Mitchell held of a late charge by UW-Platteville's Jessica Scott to win the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:40.03. Mitchell picked up her second title on Saturday by winning the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:09.46.

Jessica Reed of UW-River Falls won her second WIAC title in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.82. Reed previously took the 100-meter hurdles in 2007 with a time of 14.87. Teammate Colleen Kopel gave the Falcons their second win of the championship when she tallied 4,267 points to win the heptathlon.

Liz Kooistra continued her dominance in the 400-meter run by capturing her second consecutive title with a time of 57.76. Last year, she won the 400-meter run with a time of 57.11. Kooistra teamed up with Laura Broner, Talisa Emberts and Haley Suckow in the 1,600-meter relay to set a WIAC record with a first-place time of 3:52.18.

Scott continued the stranglehold by UW-Platteville in the 800-meter run by winning the event with a time of 2:12.19. The win marked the fifth consecutive year that the Pioneers had won the 800-meter run at the WIAC Championship. Alison Glendenning gave UW-Platteville its second WIAC title on the day by winning the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.42.

Winning events on Friday were Mary Palmer of UW-Eau Claire in the 10,000-meter run, Stephanie Perleburg of UW-La Crosse in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Caitlin Schetter of UW-La Crosse in the long jump, Sue Trzebiatowski of UW-Oshkosh in the hammer throw, Suckow of UW-Eau Claire in the pole vault, Katie Kohn of UW-Oshkosh in the javelin and Heather Bassett, Jordan Clark-Mand, Brittany Haas and Mitchell of UW-Oshkosh in the 3,200-meter relay.

Kooistra was awarded the WIAC's July Kruckman Scholar-Athlete of the Year award.

Day One Recap

Scoring 34 of its 76 points in the hammer throw, UW-Oshkosh took the lead after the first day of competition at the WIAC Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championship held Friday (May 1) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium in Oshkosh.

UW-Oshkosh won three of the seven events contested, including the hammer throw where it swept the top four places. Capturing first-place finishes for the Titans were Sue Trzebiatowski in the hammer throw with a fling of 175-11 and Katie Kohn in the javelin with a toss of 128-1. UW-Oshkosh took first place in the 3,200-meter relay as Heather Bassett, Jordan Clark-Mand, Brittany Haas and Ayla Mitchell ran to a time of 9:23.53 to set a facility record.

Two-time defending champion UW-La Crosse is in second place with 66 points and UW-Eau Claire third with 51. UW-La Crosse tallied 23 points in the long jump and 22 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, while UW-Eau Claire counted 15 points in both the 10,000-meter run and pole vault.

Winning events for UW-La Crosse were Stephanie Perleburg in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:35.30 and Caitlin Schetter in the long jump with a leap of 19-0. Schetter won the long jump for the second straight year, while Perleburg held off defending champion Hannah Humbach of UW-Eau Claire in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Humbach finished second with a time of 10:48.15.

Taking first place for UW-Eau Claire were Mary Palmer in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 38:27.01 and Hayley Suckow in the pole vault with a height of 12-6 1/4. Defending champion Pam Sellberg of UW-Stout finished second in the pole vault with a leap of 12-2 1/2.

Rounding out the team scores were fourth-place UW-Stevens Point with 29 points, fifth-place UW-River Falls with 21, sixth-place UW-Stout with 16, seventh-place UW-Platteville with eight, eighth-place UW-Whitewater with six and ninth-place UW-Superior with zero.

Competition resumes on Saturday (May 2) at 11 a.m. The final event is scheduled for 4:35 p.m.
