
UW-La Crosse Claims 12th Consecutive
WIAC Wrestling Championship
University of Wisconsin-La Crosse won its 12th consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Wrestling Championship at UW-Oshkosh’s Kolf Sports Center on Sunday (Feb. 22).
The Eagles claimed the 13th first-place trophy in program history with 146 team points to surpass UW-Stevens Point’s second-place sum of 144 points. UW-Whitewater placed third with 126 points, while UW-Oshkosh was fourth with 74, UW-Eau Claire fifth with 73, UW-Platteville sixth with 61 and Lawrence University seventh with 20.
UW-La Crosse’s winning effort was led by Dan Laurent who captured the 285-pound title for the third straight year. He pinned UW-Whitewater’s Sean Evans in 2:12 to become the fifth individual in WIAC listings to win three consecutive championships in the weight class.
The Eagles’ Matt Mauseth and Josh Zabel won their brackets for the second straight season. Mauseth captured the 149-pound crown for the second straight seasons with a pin of UW-Eau Claire’s Andy Johnston in 4:23, while Zabel earned a 6-0 decision over UW-Stevens Point’s Ben Engelland at 184 pounds.
Albie McKinney won the 125-pound crown with an 8-7 decision over UW-Whitewater’s Max Oldenburg, while Mike Schmitz defeated UW-Oshkosh’s Sam Engelland 10-3 to finish first at 174 pounds. (More)
