Titans Spite Blue Devils For First WIAC Sweep
After losing eight one-run games this season, the UW-Oshkosh baseball team recorded a pair of walk-off victories by the slimmest of margins against UW-Stout on Saturday (May 1) at Tiedemann Field.
The Titans (14-18/7-11 WIAC) capitalized on a fielding error to pull out the opener, 7-6, in the bottom of the ninth. During the second contest, UW-Oshkosh tallied the game’s final five runs, including the winner on a walk, to take a 5-4 decision. It was the first conference doubleheader sweep for the Titans this year.
Both teams marked in the first inning of game one, with UW-Stout (9-22/4-14) going ahead on a fielding error. UW-Oshkosh responded with four tallies in its turn, including one on Blake Berger’s (Jr. • Star Prairie) double and two more on Tyler Kamps’ (Fr. • Appleton) two-run homer.
The Blue Devils tacked on single scores in the third and fifth frames, getting a solo home run by Jake Duske and a run-scoring single from Josh Anderson. A sacrifice fly in the third and a Derek Layton (Fr. • Cross Plains) single during the fifth answered to give UW-Oshkosh a 6-3 cushion.
UW-Stout amassed three runs on a trio of hits to tie the game in the sixth inning. Duske added an RBI single, while Brian Giebel doubled home his team’s fifth run. After a groundout equaled the score, neither team marked before the Titans did with two outs in the final at-bat.
Nate Hanson tossed all 8.2 innings as he took the loss, allowing one earned run and 13 hits. The Titans’ Luke Westphal (So. • Clintonville) fired eight frames, yielding four earned runs, before Kyle Kannenberg (Sr. • Oshkosh) earned the victory with a scoreless three outs.
The Blue Devils, assisted by five walks, did all their damage in the nightcap during the opening frame. A fielding error allowed the first two runs to score, while another touched the plate on a throwing miscue. It then became 4-0 on a wild pitch before the Titans got out of a bases-loaded jam.
Kamps connected for another long ball to put UW-Oshkosh on the board during the fourth. Cutting the deficit in half, Derek Hiroskey (Jr. • Kimberly) posted a sacrifice fly after Nolan Fadness (Jr. • Eau Claire) tripled to open the fifth inning.
The Titans used a Berger groundout to tally again in the seventh and pull closer. With two men out, Kannenberg delivered a run-scoring single to tie the game at 4. Following an error and an intentional walk in the last frame, Mickey Fadness (Sr. • Eau Claire) drew a base-on-balls to give UW-Oshkosh the victory.
The Blue Devils were held to just two hits, getting a Drew Anderson single during the eighth and a Jon Schoch single in the ninth. Giebel and Josh Anderson paced UW-Stout with three hits on the day.

The Warhawks (24-2/13-1 WIAC), ranked second in the NCAA Division III by D3baseball.com, got seven strong innings and four strikeouts from Jeff Donovan to take the opener, 2-1. In the second contest, a five-run seventh inning pushed the home squad over the top, 8-5.

Former Titan Begins Sixth Major League Season
Jack Taschner, who pitched for the UW-Oshkosh baseball team from 1997-99, made the 2010 roster for the Pittsburgh Pirates and appeared in their opening-day victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday (April 5).
Taschner entered the contest in the sixth inning and retired two batters, including one via strikeout, while allowing one hit. The Pirates went on to win the game, 11-5.
After making 24 appearances for the Philadelphia Phillies in 2009, Taschner signed with Pittsburgh on Dec. 23. He spent his first four seasons as a member of the San Francisco Giants. Taschner entered the big leagues in 2005 and posted a 1.59 earned run average, along with a 2-0 record and 19 strikeouts in 22.2 innings. Over his final two years with the Giants, he took the mound in relief 130 times and struck out 90 batters in 98 frames.
During the offseason, Taschner altered his position on the pitching rubber and changed his arm angle. He believes the switches will make him a more effective option coming out of the bullpen.
"I feel like I’m 10 times a better pitcher than I’ve ever been,” Taschner said.
Taschner, who was a second-round pick following his UW-Oshkosh career, holds a 9-5 record with a 4.98 earned run average for his career. The left-hander has appeared in 203 games, totaling 144 strikeouts over 170 innings of activity.
"He’s shown an ability to get left-handed and right-handed hitters out with the new arm slot,” Pirates General Manager Neal Huntington said. “It’s given him better command and he has had a good spring.”
Taschner posted a perfect 13-0 record as a Titan, including the 1999 campaign when he earned NCAA Division III All-Region status. In that season, Taschner went 7-0 with a 1.51 earned run average in 53.2 innings. During his three seasons, UW-Oshkosh tallied a 102-19 record while capturing three WIAC titles. In 1998, the Titans finished 41-5 and took fifth place at the NCAA Division III World Series.

Central Wisconsin Baseball Hall Of Fame To Induct Titans' Lechnir
Tom Lechnir, who has been a part of 941 victories as a player, assistant coach and head coach at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh since 1979, will be inducted into the Central Wisconsin Baseball Hall of Fame on Thursday (Jan. 28).
Lechnir joins Ron Carpenter, Louis "Bud" Heyman and Dan Thompson as members of the 2010 Hall of Fame class. The inductions take place at Dale's Weston Lanes in Weston (5902 Schofield Ave). The night's festivities begin with a social hour at 5:30 p.m. The event's keynote speaker is Cory Provus, radio broadcaster for the Milwaukee Brewers.
Tickets to the induction ceremony are $30. They can be purchased by contacting Matt Ritzer at (715) 845-5055.
Lechnir has achieved legendary success since becoming UW-Oshkosh's fifth head baseball coach in 1989. Under his guidance, the Titans have fashioned a 647-221-1 record with one National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III championship (1994) and 11 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) titles (1991-99, 2007). The WIAC’s all-time winningest coach ranks sixth in NCAA Division III history with his .745 winning percentage and 19th with his 647 victories.
UW-Oshkosh has reached the 30-win plateau nine times during Lechnir’s tenure, including a 41-4 record in 1994 and a 41-5 mark in 1998. The Titans also hit the 30-win target with records of 36-8 in 1992, 39-5 in 1995, 35-6 in 1996, 34-4 in 1999, 37-8 in 2003, 35-9 in 2004 and 35-12 in 2007. UW-Oshkosh’s 2009 squad posted a 24-16 record and tied for the WIAC championship.
In addition, Lechnir has guided UW-Oshkosh to 14 NCAA Division III regional tournaments (1990-99, 2003, 2007-08) and nine NCAA Division III World Series (1990-96, 1998, 2003). The Titans finished first at the NCAA Division III World Series in 1994, second in 1993 and third in both 1991 and 1995.
Lechnir has had 23 players sign professional contracts, including 17 who moved to the next level after being selected in Major League Baseball's Amateur Draft. The list of professional players includes current major leaguers Jack Taschner of the Pittsburgh Pirates and free agent Jarrod Washburn. In 1999, UW-Oshkosh had five players (Taschner, Craig Glysch, Kevin Grater, Casey Kopitzke and Sean Parnell) drafted by professional teams, the most ever selected in one year from a NCAA Division III school.
Lechnir is also responsible for coaching 27 players to a total of 37 NCAA Division III All-America awards. Among the All-Americans are National Player of the Year award winners Chris Delarwelle (1990), Tim Jorgensen (1994 & 1995) and Vince Mancuso (2003).
Lechnir's coaching success hasn't gone unnoticed. He was named the NCAA Division III National Coach of the Year in 1994, NCAA Division III Midwest Region Coach of the Year in 1990-96, 1998 and 2003 and WIAC Coach of the Year in 1998-99 and 2007.
Lechnir has always taught his players to dream big. Eight years ago, Lechnir had a dream of his own. Lechnir's dream was to build a baseball stadium to house what has become a model for success in a NCAA Division III baseball program. Today, that dream is kept alive with the recent construction of Alumni Stadium. Lechnir, who always wanted to leave something better than he found it, was the primary driving force behind the planning, fundraising and design of one of the finest baseball facilities in the NCAA Division III.
Prior to becoming the Titans’ head coach, Lechnir served as an assistant coach at UW-Oshkosh from 1983-88. During that time, UW-Oshkosh registered a 193-36-1 record with one NCAA Division III championship (1985), five NCAA Division III World Series appearances (1984-88) and six WIAC titles (1983-88). In addition to winning the national title in 1985, the Titans also finished second in the country in both 1987 and 1988.
Lechnir, a graduate of Mosinee High School, played baseball at UW-Oshkosh from 1979-82. The two-year captain was a member of UW-Oshkosh teams that compiled a 101-29 record with three NCAA Division III World Series appearances (1980-82) and four WIAC championships (1979-82).
Lechnir, who played in the outfield, saw his first regular action with the Titans in 1980. He hit .330 that year with eight home runs and 40 runs batted in. In 1981, Lechnir hit .289 with seven home runs and 38 runs batted in. Lechnir’s 1982 season was his finest as he hit .369 with eight home runs and 50 runs batted in. During an 11-2 win over UW-Eau Claire in 1982, Lechnir belted three home runs to set a UW-Oshkosh record that stood for nearly 14 seasons.
This spring, UW-Oshkosh enters its 56th baseball season with an all-time record of 1,274-461-4 and a resume like no other. In 1997, Baseball America recognized the Titans’ success of winning games, capturing championships and producing professional players by naming UW-Oshkosh as the Top NCAA Division III Baseball Program of the 1990s and the Top NCAA Division III Baseball Program of All-Time.
The upcoming Hall of Fame induction will be the third of Lechnir’s career. He was inducted into the UW-Oshkosh Hall of Fame in 2001 and the Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame last February.
Lechnir, who received both his bachelor’s (1983) and master’s degree (1989) from UW-Oshkosh, lives in Oshkosh with his wife, Tina, and twin sons, Drew and Zach.
