Lakeland College Trio To Play For Titans

The UW-Oshkosh baseball program added three weapons to its arsenal for the 2005 season with the transfer of Lakeland College standouts Tyler Schmitt, Curt Hendricks and Mitch Heinemeyer. Hendricks and Heinemeyer come to UW-Oshkosh with three years of eligibility remaining and Schmitt two.

"All three players should have an immediate impact on our baseball program," said UW-Oshkosh head coach Tom Lechnir. "We are thrilled that these players are on campus and will be joining us for the 2005 season."

Schmitt, an outfielder from Hartford, received NCAA Division III All-Midwest Region third team honors a year ago after leading Lakeland College in nearly every offensive category. Schmitt started 40 games for the Muskies last spring and hit .425 (65-153) with 32 runs scored, 31 runs batted in, 12 doubles, two home runs and 16 stolen bases. Defensively, Schmitt recorded a .980 fielding percentage by totaling 95 putouts, five assists and just two errors in 102 opportunities.

Schmitt played in 11 games for Lakeland College in 2003, including three starts. He hit .292 (7-24) for the Muskies that season with nine runs scored and seven runs batted in.

"Tyler fits the mold of a true centerfielder," said Lechnir. "He has great defensive instincts and can go gap to gap to get the ball. Offensively, Tyler is a line drive hitter. He will compile a high batting average with very few strikeouts."

Hendricks, a right-handed pitcher from De Pere, was named Rookie of the Year in the Lake Michigan Conference (LMC) last season after posting a 3-5 record, two saves and a 4.06 earned run average. Hendricks led the Muskies with 11 pitching appearances a year ago, including nine starts. His 62 innings of work resulted in 55 strikeouts and 16 walks.

"Curt will be a strong addition to our pitching staff," said Lechnir. "He has excellent durability and solid command of three pitches."

Heinemeyer, a sophomore outfielder from Shiocton, received a medical redshirt last season after playing in only four games for the Muskies due to an injury. His four appearances, including three starts, featured a .400 (4-10) batting average with two doubles and two runs batted in.

Heinemeyer started 14 of his 23 appearances for the Muskies in 2003, hitting .333 (17-51) with two home runs, 14 runs scored and 11 runs batted in.

"Mitch is an impressive athlete," said Lechnir. "He is physically strong and the ball really jumps off his bat. Mitch has the ability to hit in the middle of our lineup and drive in a lot of runs."

UW-Oshkosh, which owns the second-best won-lost record (475-142-2) in the NCAA Division III since 1990, compiled a 35-9 record this past spring. In 2003, the Titans compiled a 37-8 record and finished fifth at the NCAA Division III World Series. UW-Oshkosh was the NCAA Division III champion in 1985 and 1994.

Lakeland College compiled a 23-19 record this past season and captured the LMC title for the fourth straight year. In 2003, the Muskies posted a 27-16 record and participated in the NCAA Division III Championship.

Huffman Receives Northwoods League
Postseason Honors

Ben HuffmanUW-Oshkosh and Wisconsin Woodchuck pitcher Ben Huffman was one of 25 players selected to the 2004 Northwoods League Postseason All-Star Team.

The all-star squad, which is voted by league managers, coaches and front office personnel, also included Huffman's Wisconsin Woodchuck teammates Lance Broadway of Texas Christian University and Rick Cavaiani of UW-Milwaukee. Phillip Hawke of the Waterloo Bucks and the University of Louisiana-Lafayette was named the Northwoods League's 2004 Most Valuable Player.

Huffman, who returns for his senior season at UW-Oshkosh in 2005, was the most consistent starting pitcher for the Wisconsin Woodchucks (32-31) this past year. The right-hander from Mequon posted a 7-3 record and a 2.47 earned run average in a league-high 87 and one-third innings pitched. Huffman also hurled four complete games, struck out 88 batters and held hitters to a batting average of just .198. He led the league in complete games while ranking second in strikeouts.

Earlier this summer, Huffman pitched one-third of an inning in the Northwoods League All-Star Game held July 14 in Wausau. Huffman retired the only batter he faced to help his South squad defeat the North, 12-0.

Huffman enters his final season at UW-Oshkosh with a career won-lost record of 18-4. He has pitched 184 and two-third innings during his UW-Oshkosh career, compiling a 3.46 earned run average and 150 strikeouts. Huffman had a 7-1 record and a 3.48 earned run average for the Titans last spring.

In addition to Huffman, the Wisconsin Woodchucks also had UW-Oshkosh players Jon Ganzen and Jeremy Jirschele on its 2004 roster.

Ganzen, who returns as a sophomore for the Titans in 2005, compiled a 1-1 record and a 3.06 earned run average in 17 and two-third innings pitched for the Woodchucks this past year. The right-hander from Appleton struck out 11 batters and walked just two.

Jirschele, who returns for his senior season at UW-Oshkosh in 2005, counted 66 hits, 39 runs, 27 runs batted in, 19 doubles and a .293 batting average this past year to lead the Woodchucks in all five categories. The Clintonville native also belted two home runs. Last spring, Jirschele received NCAA Division III All-America first team honors for the Titans.

The 10-year old Northwoods League is a sanctioned summer baseball league comprised of 10 teams in Canada, Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin. The Northwoods League provides its players an opportunity to use wooden bats and major league specification baseballs, experience overnight road trips, and perform nightly before fans in a stadium. The Northwoods League features some of the top college players from the Midwest and across the nation. All players in the league are unpaid and have NCAA eligibility remaining for the 2005 season.

Ned Yost Jr., who played two years at the University of Georgia and one at Dallas Baptist University (Texas), announced Wednesday (July 28) that he will transfer to UW-Oshkosh and play his final collegiate baseball season for the Titans this spring.

Yost, a right-handed hitting catcher, comes to UW-Oshkosh after spending the 2004 season at Dallas Baptist University. This past spring, Yost helped the NCAA Division I Patriots to a 44-16 record by hitting .262 (37-141) with eight doubles, three triples and one home run. While starting 40 of the 41 games that he played in, Yost also totaled 19 runs, 17 runs batted in, six stolen bases and just four errors in 263 fielding opportunities.

He also smashed a three-run home run during a 16-3 victory over Austin Peay State University (Tenn.).

Yost started 10 of the 29 games that he played in for the University of Georgia in 2002, hitting .346 (18-52) with five doubles, one triple and three home runs. He also drove in 15 runs, scored 14 times and posted a perfect fielding percentage in 51 total chances to help the Bulldogs to a 32-29 record.

He also had three-run home run in a 9-6 victory over eighth-ranked Wake Forest University (N.C.).

"I believe that Ned will come in and make an immediate impact to our baseball program," said UW-Oshkosh head coach Tom Lechnir. "He is outstanding behind the plate, both at handling pitchers and throwing out base runners. Offensively, Ned will give us the punch that we need in the middle of the lineup."

Yost is a graduate of Lassiter High School (Marietta, Ga.), where he batted .367 with seven home runs and 32 runs batted in as a senior to help the Trojans to a 30-11 record and a second-place finish in the 4A State Tournament. During Yost's junior season the Trojans captured state and national championships.

In 2000, Yost served as one of the bullpen catchers during the Major League Baseball All-Star Game that was held at Turner Field in Atlanta, Ga. He also was one of two on-the-field catchers during the 2000 Major League Baseball Home Run Derby, an event won by Sammy Sosa of the Chicago Cubs.

Yost played for the Aloha Knights (Portland, Ore.) of the Pacific International League and the Wisconsin Woodchucks (Wausau, Wis.) of the Northwoods League during the summers of 2002 and 2003, respectively. Due to a wrist injury, Yost was unable to play for the Woodchucks this summer.

"Ned's baseball experience is impressive," said Lechnir. "He is a talented performer and a proven winner. Ned should fit in very nicely with the people that we have in our program."

Only one runner reached third base in the contest.

Anaheim improved to 44-39 on the season and picked up a game on second-place Oakland in the American League West Division. The Angels remain 3 1/2 games behind first-place Texas in the division and 2 1/2 behind the A's.

Titans Unable To Land Berth In
NCAA Division III Championship

Despite posting 35 victories, a count that was bested by just five other teams in the country, the UW-Oshkosh baseball team will be a spectator for the 2004 NCAA Division III Championship after failing to receive one of the 42 invitations to the post-season tournament on Sunday (May 16).

UW-Oshkosh (35-9) was hoping to land one of the three at-large bids to the NCAA Division III Championship, but those selections went to Carthage College (34-9), George Fox University (31-9) and State University of New York-Cortland (28-14). The at-large bids were available to teams who were unable to capture their conference's automatic qualifier.

Teams selected to the NCAA Division III Championship that had more victories than UW-Oshkosh were Emory University (40-4), Johns Hopkins University (37-2), Rowan University (36-6) and the University of St. Thomas (36-6). Rose Hulman Institute compiled a 36-8 record, but like the Titans, failed to receive an at-large bid. Teams selected to the NCAA Division III Championship that matched UW-Oshkosh's victory total were Eastern Connecticut State University (35-9), The College of Wooster (35-8) and Trinity University (35-8). All other teams in the NCAA Division III had 34 or fewer wins.

UW-Oshkosh's 2004 record marked the sixth time in seven years that it registered both 27-plus wins and single digit losses in the same season. In addition to this year's 35-9 mark, the Titans went 37-8 in 2003, 29-9 in 2001, 27-8 in 2000, 34-4 in 1999 and 41-5 in 1998.

Regionally, UW-Whitewater (34-7) will host an event this weekend (May 20-23) that features the University of St. Thomas, Concordia University (20-16) and Ripon College (23-12). The winner of that regional tournament, which is being held outside of Oshkosh for the first time in 23 years, will join seven other teams at the NCAA Division III World Series on May 28-June 1 at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute. The NCAA Division III World Series is co-hosted by UW-Oshkosh and Lawrence University. The Titans finished fifth at the NCAA Division III World Series last year.

The UW-Oshkosh baseball team concluded its 40-game regular season schedule by splitting a doubleheader with UW-La Crosse on Saturday (May 8) in La Crosse.

UW-Oshkosh (33-7/18-6 WIAC) won the opener by a 7-1 score, while UW-La Crosse (16-23/10-14 WIAC) took the nightcap by a 7-4 count. UW-La Crosse's victory in the second game clinched a spot for the Eagles in next weekend's WIAC Tournament in Whitewater.

The 2004 WIAC Tournament begins Friday (May 14) with second-seed UW-Oshkosh playing third-seed UW-Stevens Point and top-seed UW-Whitewater playing fourth-seed UW-La Crosse. The double-elimination event, which sends the winner to the NCAA Division III Championship, concludes on Saturday (May 15).

UW-Oshkosh's pitching overwhelmed UW-La Crosse's hitters in the opener as the Eagles managed just three hits off Titan hurlers Jon Ganzen (Fr. • Appleton) and Jim Ziegler (So. • Eden). Ganzen (5-0) started on the mound for UW-Oshkosh and allowed just one run and two hits in six and one-third innings. Ganzen faced just 23 batters, four over the minimum. Ziegler allowed just one hit during the two and two-thirds innings he worked.

UW-Oshkosh broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning by counting runs on a single by Bryan Schwebke (Fr. • Oshkosh) and a fielder's choice by David Young (Jr. • Greenfield). Young actually hit a three-run home run during his at bat, but the umpires ruled that one of the UW-Oshkosh runners missed second base on his blast, thus, the fielder's choice.

UW-Oshkosh increased its lead to 5-0 in the sixth inning on Cole Cook's (Fr. • Middleton) run-scoring single. UW-La Crosse closed to within 5-1 with a score in the seventh inning, but the Titans secured the victory with two tallies in the eighth. UW-Oshkosh's eighth inning featured a sacrifice fly by Cook and a run-scoring single by Jeremy Jirschele (Jr. • Clintonville).

The Titans had 12 hits in the opener as Lucas Lechnir (Sr. • Mosinee), Jirschele, Schwebke and Brian Foley (So. • Hortonville) registered two each. UW-La Crosse's three hits in the contest included doubles by Kellen Haynes and Trevor Wallace.

UW-La Crosse's Matt Zurbriggen (5-3), who lasted only one inning in his start against UW-Oshkosh on Friday (May 7), pitched six innings as the starter this time around, but still took the loss after yielding five runs and 10 hits.

UW-La Crosse shocked UW-Oshkosh in the third inning of the nightcap as Andy Podmolik broke a scoreless contest by belting a grand slam. The Titans answered with two runs in the bottom half of the third inning, scoring on a home run by Jirschele and a double by Josh Shere (So. • Janesville).

Chester Janke provided the rest of the scoring for the Eagles as he hit a run-scoring double in the fifth inning, a run-scoring ground out in the seventh and a solo home run in the ninth. Trailing 7-2, UW-Oshkosh scored twice in the bottom of the ninth inning on a solo home run by Ryan Hubacek (Fr. • Rothschild) and a single by Korey Feiner (Sr. • Sun Prairie). The Titans had runners on first and third bases when the game ended.

Eric Nevermann (1-5) pitched all nine innings to gain the win for UW-La Crosse. He allowed four runs and eight hits while striking out two batters.

Brad Bolton (Fr. • Phillips) took the pitching loss for the Titans, yielding four runs and four hits in three innings as the starter. Bolton (1-1) was followed on the mound for the Titans by Brian Gerl (So. • Manawa), Ryan Hermus (Jr. • Combined Locks) and Adam Bretl (So. • Sturgeon Bay).

UW-Oshkosh's win in the opener was Tom Lechnir's 501st as head coach of the Titans. He now has a 16-year coaching record of 501-152-1. Lechnir's victory count ties him with Russ Tiedemann (501-168-2 record from 1968-1969 & 1971-1988) for the most in UW-Oshkosh history and the second-highest mark in WIAC annals.
