Defending Champion Titans
Picked To Finish Second In WIAC Race

UW-Stevens Point is the preseason favorite to win the 2008 WIAC baseball championship in a poll conducted by the league’s sports information directors.

The Pointers, who finished second in last year's title hunt, captured three first-place votes in the predictions. UW-Stevens Point has won seven league championships, with the most recent coming in 2002. The Pointers return 20 lettermen and seven starters, including senior Brandon Scheidler who racked up a league-leading 80 hits a year ago.

UW-Oshkosh, which also secured three first-place votes, is pegged to finish second in the seven-team derby. The Titans return five of their top seven hitters from last year's team that claimed the 28th WIAC title in school history. UW-Oshkosh, which captured NCAA Division III titles in 1985 and 1994, has won 27-plus games in 16 of the last 17 seasons. Tom Lechnir is the winningest head coach in WIAC archives with a 594-194-1 record in 19 seasons.

UW-Whitewater claimed the remaining first-place tally and is picked for third place. The Warhawks have won 10 WIAC trophies, including four straight from 2003-06. UW-Whitewater, which grabbed the NCAA Division III title in 2005, has produced 30 or more victories in three of the last four seasons.

The remaining WIAC projections have UW-La Crosse finishing fourth, UW-Stout fifth, UW-Platteville sixth and UW-Superior seventh.

UW-La Crosse lost five WIAC contests by one run during the 2007 campaign. Junior Storm Gram hit .406 last year to lead the conference.

UW-Stout returns seven of its top nine hitters from last year’s club that produced 23 wins, the most since 1992. The Blue Devils also appeared in the WIAC Tournament for the first time since 1999. Junior Matt Doornink established a conference single-season record with 26 appearances last season.

UW-Platteville lost 14 games by three runs or less last year and returns 95.5 percent of its innings pitched and 86.4 percent of its hits from 2007. Senior Ross Bennett is the school’s career leader in hits, home runs and runs batted in.

UW-Superior’s nine wins a year ago were the most for the program since 2000. The Yellowjackets welcome 21 new players this season, the largest incoming class in school history.
