Kamps Named To All-WIAC First Team

UW-Oshkosh senior guard Justin Kamps has been named to the 2001 All-WIAC Men's Basketball Team.

Kamps, a first team selection from Appleton, averaged 14.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game to help the Titans to an 18-9 record and a spot in the championship contest of the WIAC Tournament. Starting all 27 games, Kamps also recorded 40 steals and 37 three-point baskets during his team-high 894 minutes of playing time. He shot 45.7 percent from the field and 79.7 percent from the free throw line.

Prior to UW-Oshkosh's 76-63 loss to UW-Eau Claire in the title game of the WIAC Tournament, Kamps played an instrumental role in leading the Titans to a four-game winning streak. In victories over UW-La Crosse and UW-Eau Claire to end the regular season and wins over UW-River Falls and UW-Platteville to open the WIAC Tournament, Kamps averaged 23.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game. In a 96-74 win over UW-La Crosse on Feb. 14, Kamps tallied a career-high and WIAC season-best 38 points. Two games later in the quarterfinal round of the WIAC Tournament, Kamps totaled 30 points in a 95-87 overtime win over UW-River Falls.

Among his WIAC colleagues, Kamps ranked in the top 10 in five statistical categories. He was seventh in assists, eighth in steals and free throw percentage and ninth in scoring and assist to turnover ratio.

A 1999 All-WIAC honorable mention selection, Kamps concluded his UW-Oshkosh career with 1,148 points, the 15th-highest total in school history. In all, Kamps played in 106 games for the Titans, including 72 victories.

Receiving honorable mention recognition from UW-Oshkosh were forwards Tim Dworak and Aric Vaubel. Dworak, a sophomore from Kewaunee, averaged 15.7 points and 6.5 rebounds per game to lead the Titans in both categories. He scored in double-figures in 25 of the Titans' 27 games, including 26 in an 86-74 loss to UW-Whitewater on Jan. 3. Vaubel, a senior from Appleton, averaged 14.0 points and 5.2 rebounds per game, with the latter ranking second on the team. Vaubel scored in double-figures in 21 of UW-Oshkosh's 27 games, including 24 points in a 74-69 win over St. Norbert College on Nov. 29. Vaubel concluded his UW-Oshkosh career with 1,206 points, the 12th-best total in school annals.

UW-Superior's Vince Thomas was named WIAC Player of the Year, while UW-Whitewater's Dave Vander Meulen was named WIAC Coach of the Year.

Titans Fall Short In WIAC Tournament Final

A return trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team was denied Saturday (Feb. 24) night at UW-Eau Claire's Zorn Arena as the host Blugolds defeated the Titans, 76-63, in the championship game of the WIAC Tournament.

UW-Oshkosh, which last appeared in the NCAA Division III Tournament in 1998, advanced as the sixth seed to the WIAC Tournament's championship game after defeating third-seed UW-River Falls, 95-87 in overtime, on Tuesday (Feb. 20) and seventh-seed UW-Platteville, 94-68, on Thursday (Feb. 22). UW-Oshkosh's loss to fourth-seed UW-Eau Claire (18-9) ends the year for the Titans with an 18-9 record. UW-Oshkosh has now won 18 or more games in five of the last six seasons.

UW-Oshkosh opened the title game with a 5-2 advantage, but fell behind 21-9 at the 9:38 mark of first half due to a 19-4 UW-Eau Claire scoring run. Refusing to fold, UW-Oshkosh answered back with a 24-9 scoring run to secure a 33-30 lead at intermission.

UW-Eau Claire outscored UW-Oshkosh, 13-2, to start the second half and took a 43-35 lead with 16:26 left in the game. UW-Oshkosh cut the deficit to two points on two occassions, including a 52-50 count with 9:36 remaining. UW-Eau Claire quickly jumped the lead to 66-53 with the aid of a 14-3 scoring run and was never seriously threatened the remainder of the contest.

Just a week ago (Feb. 17), UW-Oshkosh used a torrid-shooting second half (67 percent) to overcome a 34-25 halftime deficit and deal the Blugolds a 78-66 setback that cost UW-Eau Claire a share of the WIAC regular season crown. This time it was the Blugolds who were hot in the second half as they hit 64 percent (18-28) of their field goals compared to just 33 percent (10-30) for UW-Oshkosh.

That UW-Oshkosh was able to stay close to the Blugolds was the result of only six turnovers and 10 of 12 free throw shooting. UW-Eau Claire had twice as many miscues (12), but did not get to the free throw line for the first time until there was 8:33 left in the contest. Then the Blugolds connected on 7 of 9 charity tosses down the stretch.

As was the case in their previous two WIAC Tournament games, it was the one-two punch of senior forward Sherm Carstensen and sophomore guard Jason Larson that KO'd an opponent. Carstensen scored 28 points, getting 20 in the second half, and Larson contributed 21 with 11 in the final half.

While UW-Oshkosh shot 37 percent (22-59) from the field for the game, the Blugolds did not give the Titans many second chances, holding a 37-28 command on the boards. Sophomore forward Andy Witte, who played only four minutes in the first half because of foul trouble, led the Blugolds with nine boards. Larson pulled nine rebounds in during his 40-minute performance that also included six assists and three steals.

UW-Oshkosh was led in scoring by senior guard Justin Kamps' 19 points and sophomore forward Tim Dworak's 16. Kamps concludes his UW-Oshkosh career with 1,148 points, 15th-best in UW-Oshkosh history. Senior forward Aric Vaubel, who tallied six points against UW-Eau Claire, concluded his UW-Oshkosh career with 1,206 points, 12th-best in school annals.

Titans Defeat Pioneers To Move To WIAC Tournament Final

Ignited by the perimeter shooting of guard Nick Scherer and the inside play of forwards Tim Dworak and Aric Vaubel, the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team dealt UW-Platteville a 94-68 loss in a semifinal round contest of the WIAC Tournament held Thursday (Feb. 22) evening in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Oshkosh (18-8) advances to its first-ever appearance in the championship game of the Third Annual WIAC Tournament, where it will meet UW-Eau Claire (17-9) on Saturday (Feb. 24) at 7 p.m. in Eau Claire. The winner of Saturday's game claims the WIAC Tournament title and earns the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. UW-Eau Claire progressed to meet UW-Oshkosh following its 73-65 victory over UW-Stout on Thursday in Eau Claire.

UW-Oshkosh and UW-Eau Claire have met twice this season, with the Blugolds winning 72-60 on Jan. 17 in Eau Claire and the Titans winning 78-66 on Feb.17 in Oshkosh.

UW-Oshkosh, which posted a 95-87 overtime victory over UW-River Falls in a quarterfinal round contest on Tuesday (Feb. 20), led UW-Platteville for all but 14 seconds of the game. With the exception of a 26-26 tie, the Titans led by as many as 12 points in the first half (46-34 with 1:46 left) and by as many as 28 points in the second half (94-66 with 38 seconds left). UW-Oshkosh took control of the game by extending a 61-53 lead with 11:49 left in the contest to 81-57 wth 5:04 remaining.

UW-Oshkosh's margin of victory was the largest over UW-Platteville since the Titans defeated the Pioneers, 110-64, on Jan. 11, 1966. The setback was UW-Platteville's worst since dropping a 69-43 decision to UW-Eau Claire on Feb. 3, 1990.

Scherer and Dworak, both sophomores, led UW-Oshkosh in scoring with 23 points each, while Vaubel, a senior, added 22. It was the first time this season that the Titans had three 20-point scorers in the same game. Scherer established a career-high scoring total by connecting on seven of 11 field goal attempts, including a WIAC Tournament record seven three-point baskets. Dworak reached double-figure scoring for the 24th time in 26 games this season by converting seven of 11 field goal attempts (two of three behind the three-point line) and all seven of his free throw tries. Vaubel accounted for his point total by making nine of 16 field goal attempts and all four chances from the charity stripe.

UW-Oshkosh shot 50 percent (29-58) from the field, highlighted by 55 percent (11-20) marksmanship behind the three-point line. It was the fourth consecutive game for the Titans shooting 50 percent or better from the field and the third time in four games that they had made at least 10 three-point baskets in a contest. UW-Oshkosh, the second-leading free throw shooting team in the NCAA Division III (78.6 percent), made 25 of its 28 attempts from the charity stripe, including 17 in a row to end the game. The Titans committed only six turnovers in the game and held a 34-32 rebounding advantage, with Dworak leading the way with seven.

UW-Platteville, which upset UW-Stevens Point, 57-56, in a quarterfinal round contest on Tuesday, had four double-figure scorers against UW-Oshkosh. Sophomore forward Tyler Selk scored 16 points to lead the Pioneers, while senior forward Beau Buchs added 14. The Pioneers shot 45 percent (27-60) from the field, but only 21.1 percent (4-19) behind the three-point line.

Titans Upset Falcons To Advance In WIAC Tourney

The UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team stunned third-seed UW-River Falls and advanced to the semifinal round of the WIAC Tournament following its 95-87 overtime win over the host Falcons on Tuesday (Feb. 20) night in Karges Center.

The victory allows the sixth-seed Titans (17-8) to host seventh-seed UW-Platteville (15-10) in a semifinal round contest on Thursday (Feb. 22) at 7 p.m. in Kolf Sports Center. UW-Platteville meets UW-Oshkosh after defeating second-seed UW-Stevens Point, 57-56, on Tuesday. Other quarterfinal round results from Tuesday saw fourth-seed UW-Eau Claire defeat fifth-seed UW-Superior, 83-76, and eighth-seed UW-Stout shock top-seed UW-Whitewater, 90-49.

UW-Oshkosh, which defeated UW-River Falls (14-11) twice during the regular season, led the Falcons 39-22 at halftime. The Titans jumped out to a 15-2 lead and led by as many as 19 points (39-20) with 1:03 left before the break. UW-Oshkosh shot 60.9 percent (14-23) from the field in the opening period, including 57.1 percent (8-14) behind the three-point line.

In the second half, UW-River Falls evaporated a 50-33 deficit with 13:43 remaining in the game by taking a 70-69 advantage with 4:33 left. UW-Oshkosh sophomore forward Tim Dworak later gave the Titans an 80-79 lead with a jump shot with 19 seconds left before junior guard Kent Becker put the Falcons ahead with a layup with 13 seconds remaining.

Following a missed baseline jump shot by UW-Oshkosh senior guard Justin Kamps, UW-River Falls' sophomore guard Bruce Mathison made two free throws with five seconds left to give the Falcons an 83-80 lead. UW-Oshkosh inbounded the ball following the free throws and the Falcons' Becker intercepted the pass and tossed the ball to the low ceiling with three seconds left. UW-Oshkosh was awarded the ball after the miscue and Kamps subsequently drained a three-point basket at the buzzer from 26-feet out to send the game to overtime.

In overtime, UW-Oshkosh tallied 12 of the first 14 points scored. The Titans made four of their five field goal attempts and were four of four from the free throw line. Defensively, the Titans forced UW-River Falls into six turnovers and held the Falcons to just two of eight shooting from the field.

Kamps led UW-Oshkosh in scoring with 30 points, while Dworak added 23, sophomore forward Scott Sowinski 17 and senior forward Aric Vaubel 12. Freshman forward Rich Melzer led UW-River Falls in scoring with 24 points, while Becker added 22.

Titans Deny Blugolds Share Of WIAC Title

With the aid of a strong second half charge, the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team cancelled UW-Eau Claire's conference championship celebration by defeating the visiting Blugolds, 78-66, on Saturday (Feb. 17) night in Kolf Sports Center.

The loss in the regular season finale denied UW-Eau Claire the opportunity to share the WIAC championship with UW-Stevens Point and UW-Whitewater and left the Blugolds settling for third place in the league standings with UW-River Falls. UW-Oshkosh's victory allows the Titans to share fifth place in the conference standings with UW-Superior.

UW-Oshkosh (16-8 & 8-8 in the WIAC) never led in the first half and trailed UW-Eau Claire by as many as 12 points on three occasions in the opening period, with the latter being at 26-14 with 6:13 left before intermission. UW-Eau Claire (15-9 & 9-7 in the WIAC) eventually took a 34-25 at the break as sophomore guard Steve Syrjala and sophomore center Charlie Ramberg came off the bench to score eight and six points, respectively.

In the second half it was all UW-Oshkosh as the Titans shot 72.7 percent (27-48) from the field, including 66.7 percent (8-12) behind the three-point line. UW-Oshkosh began its second half explosion by scoring 15 unanswered points to turn a 42-34 deficit to a 49-42 advantage with 10:25 left in the game. After the Blugolds cut the Titans' lead to 52-49, UW-Oshkosh countered with 10 unanswered points to take a commanding 62-49 advantage with 4:54 remaining in the hardwood squabble. UW-Oshkosh's biggest lead of the game came at 75-57 with 59 seconds left. UW-Oshkosh was spirited in the second half by guard Nick Scherer and forwards Tim Dworak and Sowinski, sophomore performers who tallied 14 points, 13 points and 11 points, respectively.

UW-Oshkosh posted its sixth straight victory over UW-Eau Claire in Kolf Sports Center by shooting 56.3 percent (27-48) from the field. The Titans' marksmanship from the field followed 62.8 shooting against UW-Whitewater and 64.6 percent shooting against UW-La Crosse in their previous two home games.

Senior guard Justin Kamps, who tallied a career-best 38 points against UW-La Crosse on Wednesday (Feb. 14), paced UW-Oshkosh in scoring with 22 points. His efforts were followed by 17 points from Dworak, 14 from Scherer and 11 from Sowinski. Kamps also grabbed a game-high seven rebounds, while Scherer dished off a game-best five assists.

UW-Eau Claire also had four double-figure scorers in the contest as sophomore forward Andy Witte led the way with 13 points. The Blugolds shot just 38.5 percent (20-52) from the field, with 27 of their attempts coming behind the three-point line.

Titans Defeat Eagles To Grab WIAC Tournament Berth

Scoring a career-high and WIAC season-best 38 points, senior guard Justin Kamps led the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team to a 96-74 win over UW-La Crosse on Wednesday (Feb. 14) night in Kolf Sports Center. The victory clinched a spot for the Titans in next week's WIAC Tournament, with quarterfinal round play beginning for UW-Oshkosh on the road on Tuesday (Feb. 20). UW-Oshkosh, which concludes the regular season by hosting UW-Eau Claire on Saturday (Feb. 17), will enter the third annual WIAC post-season event as the sixth or seventh seed.

Kamps scored 19 points in the first half as UW-Oshkosh (15-8 & 7-8 in the WIAC) took a 50-31 lead at intermission. Down 12-7, UW-Oshkosh scored 15 unanswered points to take a 22-12 lead with 10:41 left in the first half. The Titans extended their margin at halftime to 19 points by outscoring the Eagles (11-12 & 5-10 in the WIAC), 11-3, during the final 3:55 of the opening period. Sophomore forward Tim Dworak aided Kamp's effort in the first half by scoring 15 points.

Scoring 19 more points in the second half, Kamps helped UW-Oshkosh maintain its comfortable margin over UW-La Crosse. The Titans led by as many as 24 points on two occasions (94-70 & 96-72) in the second half, with the closest margin being 13 points three times. After UW-La Crosse cut the final 13-point deficit to 72-59, UW-Oshkosh went on an 11-2 scoring run to take an 83-61 advantage with 5:54 left in the game.

UW-Oshkosh shot a WIAC season-best 64.6 percent (31-48) from the field, including 76.9 percent (10-13) behind the three-point line. UW-La Crosse, which has dropped its last six games to UW-Oshkosh, shot 44.8 percent (26-58) from the field after shooting 50 percent (12-24) in the first half.

En route to the sixth-highest scoring output in UW-Oshkosh history, Kamps made 10 of his 15 field goal attempts, including four of five behind the three-point line. He also added 14 free throws in 16 attempts and concluded his 35 minutes of playing time with five rebounds, three assists and one steal. Other double-figure scorers for the Titans were Dworak with 22 points and sophomore forward Scott Sowinski and senior forward Aric Vaubel with 10 points each. Dworak grabbed eight rebounds to take team and game honors.

UW-La Crosse had four players in double-figure scoring, with junior forward Scott Meerstein counting 16 points and freshman forward Ben Bemis 13.

Pointers Pull Away To Defeat Titans

Sophomore center Josh Iserloth scored 18 of his game-high 22 points in the second half to help the UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team pull away to defeat UW-Oshkosh, 66-53, on Saturday (Feb. 10) night in Quandt Fieldhouse. The loss was the fourth straight for UW-Oshkosh, which defeated UW-Stevens Point, 85-76, on Jan. 13 in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Oshkosh (14-8 & 6-8 in the WIAC) had the upperhand early in the contest, building a 12-8 advantage with 14:24 left in the first half. UW-Stevens Point (16-6 & 8-6 in the WIAC) battled back to take the lead for good at 19-16 on a three-point basket by senior guard Brent Larson with 10:01 remaining in the opening period. UW-Stevens Point eventually took a 31-24 lead at intermission after outscoring UW-Oshkosh, 8-2, during the final 6:24 of the first half.

After falling behind 33-24 at the start of the second half, UW-Oshkosh scored six unanswered points to cut the deficit to 33-30 with 15:31 remaining in the game. UW-Stevens Point, behind 13 points from Iserloth, then went on a 21-10 scoring run to take command of the game by a 54-40 count with 6:33 left.

Sophomore forward Tim Dworak scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead UW-Oshkosh's performance, while senior forward Aric Vaubel scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds. UW-Oshkosh, hampered by 20 turnovers, shot 39.1 percent (18-46) from the field. UW-Stevens Point, which also received 11 points from senior forward Joe Zuiker, shot 49 percent (24-49) from the field and won the game despite being outrebounded by the Titans, 36-23.

Titans Edged By Warhawks Despite Hot Shooting

Despite shooting a season-high 62.8 percent (27-43) from the field, the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team fell 79-74 to UW-Whitewater on Wednesday (Feb. 7) night in Kolf Sports Center. The win was only the fourth for the Warhawks on the Titans' hardwood in the last 13 years.

The 150th meeting between UW-Oshkosh and UW-Whitewater was tightly contested, with the biggest differential in score being six points. UW-Whitewater opened the game with leads of 15-10 and 17-12, with the latter coming 7:26 before intermission. UW-Oshkosh then scored five unanswered points to tie the game and later took a four-point advantage (29-25) before settling for a 33-32 lead at the break.

UW-Oshkosh (14-7 & 6-7 in the WIAC) led by as many as five points on two occasions early in the second half, with the latest being 39-34 with 18:15 left in the game. UW-Whitewater (16-6 & 9-5 in the WIAC) stormed back to tie the game at 43 and took a 54-49 lead with 11:09 remaining in the contest. With the exception of UW-Oshkosh leads of 61-60 and 63-62 with 7:40 and 7:02 left in the game, respectively, UW-Whitewater was ahead or tied the final 14:54 of the game. UW-Whitewater took the lead for good at 64-63 on a layup by junior guard Jake Wolter with 6:07 left in the game and built a six-point advantage (75-69), the game's largest margin, with 1:09 remaining,

Wolter and sophomore forward Aubrey Lewis-Byers each tallied 19 points to lead UW-Whitewater in scoring, while sophomore guard Andre Hicks added 12. UW-Oshkosh had four players in double-figure scoring as senior forward Aric Vaubel had 18 points, sophomore forward Tim Dworak 17, senior guard Justin Kamps 16 and sophomore forward Scott Sowinski 10.

UW-Whitewater offset UW-Oshkosh's season-high marksmanship from the field by shooting 53.7 percent (29-54). Both teams found the bottom of the net often in the second half as the Warhawks shot 70.8 percent (17-24) from the field and the Titans 65.4 percent (17-26). UW-Whitewater had a 29-17 rebound advantage, including 12 on the offensive end.

Titans Encounter Overtime Loss To Blue Devils

Senior guard Oties Epps scored eight of his team's 15 points in overtime to help UW-Stout defeat UW-Oshkosh, 73-64, on Saturday (Feb. 3) night in Johnson Fieldhouse. Last month, UW-Oshkosh defeated UW-Stout, 90-69.

Epps opened the overtime period with a three-point basket to give UW-Stout (11-9 & 5-8 in the WIAC) the lead for good at 61-58. Epps then made five of six free throw attempts in the final 1:32 of the extra frame to lift the Blue Devils to their eighth home win in 10 games. UW-Oshkosh cut UW-Stout's lead in overtime to 66-64, but the Titans failed to score during the final 1:32 of the contest.

During regulation, UW-Oshkosh (14-6 & 6-6 in the WIAC) and UW-Stout were never more than five points apart, including eight ties. After UW-Oshkosh sophomore forward Scott Sowinski made a layup with 42 seconds left to give the Titans a 58-55 lead, UW-Stout senior guard Pat Von Feldt hit a three-point basket 10 seconds later to tie the game at 58. The Titans had shots by Sowinski and sophomore guard Nate Miller in the final four seconds of the contest, but both missed the mark.

Senior forward Aric Vaubel led UW-Oshkosh in scoring with 22 points, while senior guard Justin Kamps added 17. Vaubel also gabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for the Titans, who shot just 42.9 percent (24-56) from the field and 50 percent (10-20) from the free throw line.

UW-Stout senior forward Aaron Vachowiak matched Vaubel by scoring 22 points to share game honors. The Blue Devils also benefited from 12 points by Epps and 11 by Von Feldt.

Titans Suffer Road Loss To Yellowjackets

The UW-Superior men's basketball team scored the first seven points of the contest and never looked back as it stung UW-Oshkosh, 84-59, on Saturday (Jan. 27) afternoon in Gates Fieldhouse. The host Yellowjackets moved into a tie with UW-Oshkosh and UW-Eau Claire for third place in the WIAC standings by owning a 6-5 league record.

The Yellowjackets (13-5) swarmed out of the nest quickly against the Titans, extending a 7-0 lead to 14-4 with 16:58 left in the first half. UW-Oshkosh (14-5) cut the deficit to six points on three occasions in the opening period, but UW-Superior countered the last threat with 13 unanswered points to lead 45-26 with 1:36 remaining before intermission. UW-Superior, behind 15 points from senior forward Vince Thomas and 13 from junior guard Brandon Vesel, led UW-Oshkosh 47-30 at halftime. The Yellowjackets shot 62.1 percent (18-29) from the field in the first half, including 50 percent (6-12) behind the three-point line.

UW-Superior opened the second half with a 16-6 scoring run to lead 63-36 with 14:16 remaining in the game. The closest the Titans could get the rest of the way was 21 points, a 79-58 count with 4:35 left. The Yellowjackets limited UW-Oshkosh to just 29.4 percent (5-17) field goal shooting in the second half.

Senior forward Aric Vaubel paced UW-Oshkosh in scoring with 14 points, while senior guard Justin Kamps contributed 12. Kamps scored his 1,001 career point in the contest to become the 21st player in UW-Oshkosh history to reach the 1,000-point plateau. Earlier this season, Vaubel reached the 1,000-point milestone.

Thomas led UW-Superior in scoring with 26 points, including 12 free throws in 14 attempts. Vesel added 17 points and sophomore forward Tony Peterson 10. Earlier this season, UW-Superior edged UW-Oshkosh, 83-82, in overtime.

Titans Edge Pioneers On Vaubel's Tipin At Buzzer

Highlighted by senior forward Aric Vaubel's tipin at the buzzer, the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team rallied from a late seven-point deficit to defeat UW-Platteville, 61-59, on Wednesday (Jan. 24) night in Williams Fieldhouse. Coupled with a 67-66 victory over the Pioneers last February, UW-Oshkosh has now won back-to-back games at UW-Platteville for the first time since winning hardwood battles during the 1984 and 1985 seasons.

UW-Oshkosh (14-4 & 6-4 in the WIAC) and UW-Platteville (10-8 & 3-7 in the WIAC) played through eight tied scores in the first half en route to a 31-31 deadlock at intermission. UW-Platteville's biggest lead was 4-0 at the 18:34 mark of the first half, while UW-Oshkosh's biggest advantage was 12-7 at the 14:06 mark of the opening period. The biggest cushion for either team during the final 13:35 of the first half was three points, a UW-Oshkosh lead of 23-20 with 6:24 remaining.

UW-Platteville opened the second half with a 9-4 scoring run to lead 40-35 with 15:47 left in the game. UW-Oshkosh quickly erased the deficit with a 7-1 scoring run to lead 42-41 with 12:25 remaining. Following a tie at 48, UW-Platteville took what seemed to be control of the contest by going on a 9-2 scoring run to lead 57-50 with 4:16 left. The Titans refused to quit, however, as they countered with seven unanswered points to tie the tilt at 57 with 1:53 remaining.

UW-Platteville regained the lead at 59-57 on two free throws by senior guard Brad Stangel with 1:27 left in the game. UW-Oshkosh sophomore guard Nate Miller matched Stangel's conversions 17 seconds later by adding a pair of free throws with 1:10 remaining. Miller's free throws tied the game at 59, the 14th tied score of the contest. Following a missed UW-Platteville shot with 10 seconds left, UW-Oshkosh got the rebound and called timeout. The Titans got three shots off during the final 10 seconds, a jump shot from the lane by Miller, a tip by sophomore forward Tim Dworak and the game-winning tipin by Vaubel. Last February, UW-Oshkosh won at UW-Platteville on a three-point basket with 0.8 seconds left by guard Justin Kamps, now a senior.

Vaubel led the Titans in scoring with 20 points, 10 in each half, while Dworak added 12. Both players grabbed six rebounds to take game honors. UW-Platteville, which was outscored 11-2 during the final 4:16 of the game, was led in scoring by sophomore forward Tyler Selk's 16 points. The Pioneers have now lost six consecutive games, their longest losing skid since the 1984-85 season.

Titans Dunk First-Place Falcons

The UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team erupted in the second half to douse first-place UW-River Falls, 89-60, on Saturday (Jan. 20) afternoon in Kolf Sports Center. The victory lifts UW-Oshkosh to a tie for second place in the WIAC standings with a 5-4 league record. UW-River Falls loses sole possession of first place in the WIAC standings with the setback, but remains in a tie for the top spot with its 6-3 league ledger.

UW-Oshkosh (13-4) trailed the opening minute of the game and for about two minutes midway through the first half before taking control of the contest right before intermission. The Titans, who led by as many as five points on two occasions in the first half, outscored the Falcons, 6-4, in the final 3:13 of the first half to lead 36-34 at the break. The two teams found the net often in the opening half as UW-River Falls shot 60 percent (12-20) from the field and UW-Oshkosh 57.7 percent (15-26).

The second half was all UW-Oshkosh as the Titans dominated play on both ends of the floor. UW-Oshkosh shot 55.9 percent (19-34) from the field in the second half, including 57.1 percent (8-14) behind the three-point line. In addition, the Titans committed just five turnovers, posted a 26-12 rebound advantage and held the Falcons to just 27.6 percent (8-29) shooting from the field during the final 20 minutes.

UW-Oshkosh stormed out of the gates quickly in the second half by extending a 38-37 lead to 60-47 thanks to a 22-6 scoring run during a seven-minute period. The Titans closed the game with a 16-4 scoring run during the final 4:43 to compile their second 29-point margin of the contest. The margin of victory was the largest for UW-Oshkosh this season.

UW-Oshkosh, which defeated the Falcons, 90-85, on Dec. 9, had players score in double figures. Senior guard Justin Kamps scored a season-high 25 points to lead the Titans, while sophomore forward Tim Dworak added 17, senior forward Aric Vaubel 13, sophomore guard Nate Miller 12 and sophomore guard Nick Scherer 11. Dworak also grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds en route to his second double-double of the season.

UW-River Falls (11-6), which entered the contest ranked third in the NCAA Division III West Region, was led in scoring by freshman forward Rich Melzer's 14 points. The Falcons have lost their seven meetings with UW-Oshkosh.

Titans Dealt Road Loss At UW-Eau Claire

A 14-2 scoring run by UW-Eau Claire during the final 3:39 of the first half and the first 4:25 of the second half proved costly for the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team as it fell 72-60 to the host Blugolds on Wednesday (Jan. 17) night in Zorn Arena.

UW-Eau Claire led for most of the contest, with the only UW-Oshkosh advantages being at 10-9 and 11-9 early in the first half. Leading 26-25, UW-Eau Claire ended the final 3:39 of the first half with an 8-2 scoring run to grab a 34-27 advantage at intermission.

Following the break, UW-Eau Claire (11-5 and 5-3 in the WIAC) extended its margin over UW-Oshkosh (12-4 and 4-4 in the WIAC) to 13 points by scoring the first six points of the second half. After the Titans cut the deficit to 47-37, UW-Eau Claire countered with 11 consecutive points to lead 58-37 with 8:47 left in the game.

The win was a solid effort by the Blugolds, who hit 52.1 percent (25-48) of their field goal attempts, 72.7 percent (16-22) of their free throw attempts, committed just 11 turnovers and had four players reach double-figure scoring. Senior forward Sherm Carstensen led UW-Eau Claire in scoring with 17 points, while sophomore forward Andy Witte added 15. Carstensen also contributed eight rebounds and three assists in helping the Blugolds defeat the Titans for only the third time in their last 10 meetings.

UW-Oshkosh, which lost for only the second time in its last nine games, was paced in scoring by sophomore forward Tim Dworak's 21 points and senior forward Aric Vaubel's 12. Dworak also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds, including eight on the offensive end.

Titans Defeat Defending League Champion Pointers

The UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit to defeat UW-Stevens Point, 85-76, on Saturday (Jan. 13) afternoon before a crowd of 1,016 in Kolf Sports Center. The victory leaves both teams with identical 12-3 overall records and 4-3 marks in the WIAC. UW-Stevens Point, the defending WIAC champion, entered the contest tied for first in the league standings and ranked seventh nationally by D3Hoops.com.

UW-Oshkosh started game making only two of its first 15 field goal attempts, but made 21 of its next 37 to end the game shooting 44.2 percent (23-52). UW-Stevens Point shot 45.8 percent (27-59) from the field, including 54.5 percent (27-59) in the first half. The two teams combined for 21 three-point field goals, including 14 in the second half.

UW-Stevens Point took advantage of the Titans' early shooting woes and built a 25-13 lead with 6:30 left in the first half. UW-Oshkosh then went on a 12-3 scoring run to cut the deficit to 28-25 before the Pointers ended the first half with six unanswered points to lead 34-25 at intermission.

In the second half, UW-Oshkosh's fortunes turned around with the benefit of two major scoring runs. The Titans opened the second half on an 11-2 scoring run to tie the game at 36-36 with 16:01 remaining in the game. Shortly after, UW-Oshkosh went on a 23-13 scoring run to extend a 39-38 lead to 62-51 with 4:55 remaining. UW-Oshkosh offset four three-point baskets by UW-Stevens Point senior guard Jay Bennett in the final 2:10 by making 11 of its 14 free throw attempts and receiving a slam dunk by sophomore forward Scott Sowinski during the same time span.

UW-Oshkosh had five double-figure scorers in the contest, with sophomore guard Nick Scherer coming off the bench to tally a career-best 17 on four of five shooting from the field and six of seven shooting from the free throw line. He has now scored in double figures in three of the last four games, including 12 in last Wednesday's win over UW-La Crosse. Other top scorers for the Titans were senior forward Aric Vaubel with 15 points, Sowinski with 14, senior guard Justin Kamps with 13 and sophomore forward Tim Dworak with 11. The 85 points scored by UW-Oshkosh against UW-Stevens Point were the most allowed by the Pointers in their last 81 games.

Junior guard Kalonji Kadima led UW-Stevens Point in scoring with 21 points, while Bennett and senior forward Joe Zuiker added 12 each.

Titans' Defense Shuts Down Eagles

Consecutive three-point baskets by freshman guard Wayne Bosworth and sophomore guard Nick Scherer in both the first and second halves ignited the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team to a 76-58 victory over host UW-La Crosse on Saturday (Jan. 10) in Mitchell Hall. The Titans have won three of their last four WIAC contests to even their league mark at 3-3.

UW-Oshkosh (11-3) led the contest most of the way, with the only UW-La Crosse advantages being at 8-6, 10-9, 14-13 and 21-20. The Titans closed the first half with an 18-9 scoring run to lead 38-30 at intermission. Highlighting the scoring spree were consecutive three-point baskets by Bosworth and Scherer with 1:06 and 24 seconds left in the first half, respectively.

Leading 48-42 in the second half, Bosworth and Scherer staked UW-Oshkosh to a double-digit advantage by connecting on consecutive three-point baskets to give the Titans a 54-42 lead. UW-Oshkosh held a double-digit lead the final 12:14 of the game, including an 18-point margin at the conclusion of the contest.

UW-Oshkosh shot 49 percent (25-51) from the field against the Eagles, including 52.2 percent (12-23) in the second half. Defensively, the Titans held UW-La Crosse to just 34.5 percent (20-58) field goal shooting, including only 31.3 percent (10-32) in the second half. UW-La Crosse became the fifth opponent of the Titans this season to shoot under 40 percent from the field.

Sophomore forward Tim Dworak led UW-Oshkosh in scoring with 17 points, while senior forward Aric Vaubel added 15, senior guard Justin Kamps 13 and Scherer 12. Scherer scored all of his points on four three-point field goals. Freshman guard Casey Taggatz led UW-La Crosse in scoring with 13 points.

Balanced Scoring Paces Titans To Home Triumph

Double-figure scoring from five players, including two off the bench, aided the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team in its 90-69 victory over UW-Stout on Saturday (Jan. 6) afternoon in Kolf Sports Center. The victory was the fifth in the last six games for UW-Oshkosh, while the loss was the fifth straight for UW-Stout.

Sophomore forward Tim Dworak led UW-Oshkosh in scoring with 19 points, while senior Aric Vaubel added 14, sophomore forward Kari Hannula 13, senior guard Justin Kamps 12 and sophomore guard Nick Scherer 10. Vaubel scored his 1,006th career point in the contest to become the 20th player in UW-Oshkosh history to surpass the 1,000-point plateau. Hannula and Scherer contributed their scoring off the bench, with Hannula's establishing a career best.

Leading 21-19, UW-Oshkosh (10-3 and 2-3 in the WIAC) went on a 21-4 scoring run to take a 42-23 lead with 2:02 left in the first half. UW-Stout (7-6 and 1-5 in the WIAC) closed the half with five unanswered points to trail 42-28 at intermission. Dworak and Kamps each scored 10 points for the Titans in the first half.

UW-Oshkosh made the game a rout in the second half as it opened the period with a 23-7 scoring run to lead 65-35 with 12:01 left in the game. The closest the Blue Devils got the rest of the way was an 87-68 count with 1:04 remaining.

UW-Oshkosh outrebounded UW-Stout, 40-26, in the contest, with Dworak and Vaubel each grabbing nine to share game honors. The Titans shot 48.3 percent (29-60) from the field, including 56.5 percent (13-23) in the second half. In addition, UW-Oshkosh made 28 of its 34 free throw attempts (82.4 percent) against the Blue Devils to lift its NCAA Division III-leading mark to 81.7 percent (294-360).

The Blue Devils, who shot 40.4 percent (21-52) from the field and committed 22 turnovers against the Titans, were led in scoring by junior guard Oties Epps' 15 points.

Slow Start Ends Titans Four-Game Win Streak

The UW-Whitewater men's basketball team grabbed a double-digit lead in the opening two minutes of the contest and never looked back as it defeated visiting UW-Oshkosh, 86-74, on Wednesday (Jan. 3) night in Kachel Fieldhouse. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Titans, who hadn't lost since a 68-63 setback to UW-Platteville on Dec. 6.

UW-Whitewater (9-3 and 3-2 in the WIAC) scored the first 12 points of the contest and extended its lead over UW-Oshkosh to 28-8 with 7:48 left in the first half. The Warhawks led by as many as 23 points in the first half before taking a 44-23 advantage to intermission. UW-Whitewater made 19 of its 33 (57.6 percent) field goal attempts in the first half, with sophomore center Aubrey Lewis-Byers and junior guard Jake Wolter combining for 13 baskets in 18 attempts.

UW-Oshkosh cut the deficit to 50-36 with 15:12 left in the game before UW-Whitewater went on a 13-3 scoring run to lead 63-39 with 10:12 remaining. Refusing to quit, UW-Oshkosh stormed back with a scoring run of its own, a 26-9 count, to trail 72-65 with 2:52 left in the contest. UW-Whitewater held off the Titans (9-3 and 1-3 in the WIAC) in the final 2:52 by making 12 of its 15 attempts from the free throw line.

Lewis-Byers led UW-Whitewater in scoring with 30 points, while Wolter added 26. Lewis-Byers also contributed eight rebounds and two assists, while Wolter recorded five rebounds and three assists.

Sophomore forward Tim Dworak registered a career-high 26 points for the Titans by making eight of 11 field goal attempts and all 10 of his free throw tries. The Titans also received 18 points from sophomore forward Scott Sowinski and 15 points from senior guard Justin Kamps.

Rout Of V-Hawks Gives Titans Early Christmas Present

Holding Viterbo University scoreless for the first 7:16 of the contest, the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team received an early Christmas present as it unwrapped the V-Hawks for a 94-69 victory on Saturday (Dec. 23) afternoon in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Oshkosh (9-2) scored the first 13 points of the game en route to a 31-14 lead with 3:30 left in the first half. The Titans took a 33-22 advantage to intermission despite shooting just 26.5 percent (9-34) from the field. UW-Oshkosh was able to grab the upperhand as Viterbo University shot just 24 percent (6-25) from the field and committed 14 turnovers in the opening frame. UW-Oshkosh and Viterbo University began the game shooting as cold as the weather as they combined to make only nine of their first 41 field goal tries.

In the second half, the two teams combined for 108 points as UW-Oshkosh shot 55.9 percent (19-34) and Viterbo University 52.9 percent (18-34) from the field. The V-Hawks cut the deficit to 38-26 in the second half before the Titans went on a 13-3 scoring run to lead 51-29 with 15:02 remaining. The largest lead for UW-Oshkosh was 26 points, a 92-66 count with 30 seconds left.

UW-Oshkosh had four players in double-figure scoring as sophomore forward Scott Sowinski tallied 16 points, senior guard Justin Kamps 15, sophomore forward Tim Dworak 13 and sophomore guard Nick Scherer 10. Scherer's point total was a career high, as were the five points by junior guard Josh Board and the four points by freshman forward Nick Desrochers. Junior guard Mike Brudos led the V-Hawks in scoring with 16 points.

Titans Pull Away To Defeat Finlandia University

The UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team used a late first half scoring run and another to start the second half to defeat first-time opponent Finlandia University, 93-72, on Wednesday (Dec. 19) night in Kolf Sports Center. The victory was the 51st for the Titans in their last 59 non-conference games.

Finlandia University (6-7) hit 10 of its first 14 field goal attempts to take a 24-15 lead before UW-Oshkosh went on a 27-13 scoring run to lead 42-37 at intermission. The Titans (8-2) started the second half with a 16-7 scoring run to lead 58-44 with 13:28 left in the contest. UW-Oshkosh's biggest lead of the game was 23 points, 93-70 with 15 seconds remaining.

The Hancock, Mich., school put on a shooting clinic for most of the first half by hitting 15 of its first 20 field goal attempts, including five three-point baskets. Finlandia University missed its last four shots of the first half to wind up shooting 62.5 percent. In the second half the Lions shot only 37 percent from the field, with 10 baskets in 27 attempts.

UW-Oshkosh won the contest by shooting 53 percent (35-66) from the field, committing only eight turnovers and grabbing a 39-25 rebound advantage. The Titans also made 11 of their 22 three-point field goal attempts to give them 35 (67 attempts) in their last three games.

UW-Oshkosh had five double-figure scorers in the contest, including freshman Wayne Bosworth who came off the bench to tally a career-high 17 points. Bosworth made five three-point baskets while grabbing four rebounds and dishing off two assists. Other double-figure scorers were senior guard Justin Kamps with 16 points, senior forward Aric Vaubel with 15, sophomore forward Scott Sowinski with 14 and sophomore forward Tim Dworak with 12. Vaubel also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, while Dworak grabbed seven.

Sophomore forwards Bill Loeks and Mike O'Connell led Finlandia University in scoring with 19 and 17 points, respectively.

Titans Roll Past Simpson College

The UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team returned to the state of Iowa for the second time in three years on Saturday (Dec. 16) afternoon and came away with an 89-64 victory over Simpson College at the Cowles Fieldhouse in Indianola. The win was the Titans' 50th in their last 58 non-conference games.

UW-Oshkosh, which won its three previous meetings with Simpson College, trailed 6-5 in the contest before going on a 35-15 scoring run to take a 40-21 lead with 5:46 left in the first half. The Titans (7-2) ended the first half making 17 of their 34 field goal attempts, including nine of 15 behind the three-point line, to take a 49-28 lead at intermission.

UW-Oshkosh remained in control in the second half, building a pair of 30-point leads. The Titans made four more three-point baskets (eight attempts) and coverted 12 of its 14 free throw tries in the final 20-minute period. Simpson College (3-4) was outscored 40-36 in the second half despite making 11 of 18 field goal attempts and 12 of 15 free throw attempts.

Sophomore forward Scott Sowinski led UW-Oshkosh in scoring with 23 points, including 15 in the second half. Sowinski made six three-point basket in the contest, with four coming in the second half. Senior guard Justin Kamps added 15 points for the Titans, while sophomore forward Tim Dworak had 13 and senior forward Aric Vaubel 11. Dworak grabbed a team-high six rebounds in the game, while sophomore guard Nate Miller dished off a team-best seven assists.

Sophomore forward Jesse Harris led Simpson College in scoring with 13 points, the lone double-figure tally for the Storm.

Titans Pick Up WIAC Road Win

The last of the unbeaten teams in WIAC play fell Saturday (Dec.9) night at the Karges Center as the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team defeated UW-River Falls, 90-85. The host Falcons entered the contest with a 1-0 record in WIAC action, while the Titans were 0-2.

The race for this year's conference championship has gotten off to an interesting start as every team in the nine-team league has picked up at least one win and has absorbed at least one loss in conference play. UW-Platteville, UW-Superior and UW-Whitewater share the WIAC lead with 2-1 records.

UW-Oshkosh (6-2) led the Falcons (5-3) most of the game, taking a 7-6 advantage at the 14:59 mark of the first half and holding on the rest of the way. The Titans led by as many as 13 points (38-25) in the first half before taking a 40-33 lead into halftime.

Following intermission, UW-Oshkosh opened the second half with a 16-6 scoring run to lead 56-39 with 14:03 left in the contest. UW-River Falls evaporated a 79-63 UW-Oshkosh advantage with 4:20 remaining by closing the hardwood battle with a 22-11 scoring run.

Sophomore forward Scott Sowinski paced UW-Oshkosh to its third straight road victory over the Falcons by scoring 23 points. Sowinski was six of 14 from the field, including four of eight behind the three-point line, and seven of nine from the free throw line. The Titans also received 20 points from senior guard Justin Kamps, 14 points from sophomore forward Tim Dworak and 11 points from sophomore guard Nate Miller. Dworak led UW-Oshkosh in rebounds with seven, all offensive, while Kamps concluded his performance with six rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Junior guard Kent Becker led the Falcons with 30 points on 10 of 21 shooting from the field and eight of eight accuracy from the charity stripe. Becker had 33 points in the Falcons' win over UW-Whitewater last Saturday.

Titans Suffer Home Loss To Pioneers

Outscoring UW-Oshkosh, 9-3, in the final minute of the game, the UW-Platteville men's basketball team pulled out a 68-63 victory over the Titans on Wednesday (Dec. 6) night in Kolf Sports Center. The decision marked the 10^th time in the last 14 meetings between the two combatants that the margin of victory was 10 points or less.

UW-Oshkosh (5-2 and 0-2 in the WIAC) got off to a slow start against the Pioneers, falling behind 11-2 at the 11:58 mark of the first half. Part of the Titans' deficit was caused by one of shooting from the field and four turnovers. Trailing 17-7, UW-Oshkosh finally got on track by reeling off 16 unanswered points to lead 23-17 with 1:48 left in the first half. Freshman guard Wayne Bosworth came off the bench to key the Titans' scoring run by tossing in eight points. UW-Platteville scored the final four points of the half to cut the UW-Oshkosh advantage to 23-21 at intermission.

Both teams displayed excellent marksmanship in the second half, with UW-Platteville shooting 68.2 percent (15-22) from the field, 85.7 percent (6-7) behind the three-point line and 73.3 percent (11-15) from the free throw line and UW-Oshkosh shooting 53.8 percent (14-26) from the field, 54.5 percent (6-11) behind the three-point line and 85.7 percent (6-7) from the free throw line.

UW-Oshkosh trailed 57-53 with 2:50 left in the game before rallying to take a 60-59 lead on sophomore forward Tim Dworak's layup with 59 seconds left. UW-Platteville then took control of the game by scoring seven straight points to lead 66-60 with 16 seconds remaining. The Pioneer's scoring run featured a three-point basket by sophomore guard Bryan Stangel with 37 seconds left and two free throws each by sophomore forward Tyler Selk and senior guard Brad Stangel with 23 and 16 seconds left, respectively.

Sophomore forward Scott Sowinski led UW-Oshkosh in scoring with 15 points, while Dworak added 14 and Bosworth 11. Bryan Stangel led the Pioneers (6-1 and 2-0 in the WIAC) in scoring with 15 points.

Titans Stung By Yellowjackets In WIAC Opener

Scoring eight of the first 11 points in overtime, the UW-Superior men's basketball team held on to defeat UW-Oshkosh, 83-82, on Saturday (Dec. 2) afternoon in Kolf Sports Center. UW-Oshkosh trailed 37-29 at halftime of the WIAC opener before rallying to send the game to the extra period tied at 71.

Regulation play featured a tale of two halves with UW-Superior (3-0 and 1-0 in the WIAC) dominating the first half and UW-Oshkosh the second. UW-Superior's control of the first half was keyed by six of 12 shooting behind the three-point line, an 18-16 rebound advantage and a defense that limited the Titans to just 34.6 percent (9-26) field goal shooting. UW-Superior built its 12-point margin at halftime by outscoring UW-Oshkosh, 16-8, during the final 5:50 of the first half.

In the second half, UW-Oshkosh (5-1 and 0-1 in the WIAC) stormed back to take a 53-45 lead with 11:45 left in the contest. Senior guard Justin Kamps sparked the Titans during their 24-8 scoring run to start the second half by swishing the nets for nine points. Following a made free throw by UW-Superior junior guard Brandon Vesel with 22 seconds left in the game, UW-Oshkosh sophomore forward Scott Sowinski calmly sank a pair of free throws with eight seconds remaining to send the game to overtime. UW-Oshkosh outscored the Yellowjackets, 42-34, in the second half by making 14 of 30 field goal attempts and all 13 of its free throw tries.

UW-Superior made a statement early in the overtime period, building a 79-74 lead with 2:53 remaining. UW-Oshkosh sophomore guard Nate Miller's three-point play with 26 seconds left cut the deficit to 83-82, but the Titans were unable to grab the rebound following a missed UW-Superior jump shot with four seconds remaining. Junior guard Jason Strilzuk scored five points for UW-Superior in the extra frame, while senior forward Vince Thomas tallied four.

UW-Oshkosh had five double-figure scorers in the contest as Sowinski tallied 22 points, senior forward Aric Vaubel 18, Kamps 17, Miller 11 and sophomore forward Tim Dworak 10. Sowinski also added four assists and three rebounds, while Kamps grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds. UW-Superior was led by the all-around effort of Thomas, who scored 21points, grabbed 13 rebounds, blocked six shots and recorded four steals.

Second Half Spurt Keeps Titans Undefeated

Ignited by a 17-6 scoring run to start the second half, the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team went on to post a 74-69 victory over St. Norbert College on Wednesday (Nov. 29) night in Kolf Sports Center. The victory was UW-Oshkosh's 49th in its last 57 non-conference games and raised the Titans' all-time record against the Green Knights to 40-29.

UW-Oshkosh started its hardwood battle against the Green Knights slowly, committing six turnovers and making only two of its first nine field goal attempts in the first 6:37 of the contest. St. Norbert College (2-2) led throughout most of the first half and took a 26-24 advantage to intermission. The first half featured neither team attempting free throw as only seven fouls were called.

UW-Oshkosh took control of the contest in the first 4:39 of the second half, outscoring the Green Knights, 17-6, to take a 41-32 lead. Sophomore forward Scott Sowinski sparked the scoring spurt by scoring eight points, including a pair of three-point field goals. The Titans led by as many as 13 points (63-50 with 6:10 left) before the Green Knights cut the deficit to 71-69 with 15 seconds remaining. Senior guard Justin Kamps added a pair of free throws and sophomore guard Nate Miller one in the final 10 seconds to the conclude the game's scoring.

Senior forward Aric Vaubel paced UW-Oshkosh to its second 5-0 start in four years by scoring 24 points and grabbing seven rebounds, both team highs. Other double-digit scorers for the Titans were Sowinski with 21 points and Kamps and sophomore forward Tim Dworak with 10 points each. Junior center Nathan Hoffmann led the Green Knights with 21 points and eight rebounds, both team bests.

UW-Oshkosh opens WIAC play on Saturday (Dec. 2) by hosting UW-Superior (2-0) in 3 p.m. contest in Kolf Sports Center.

Titans Remain Unbeaten

Registering four double-digit scorers for the second consecutive day, the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team upped its record to 4-0 with a 70-58 victory over Marian College on Sunday (Nov. 26) afternoon at UW-Stevens Point's Quandt Fieldhouse.

UW-Oshkosh, which defeated Edgewood College (65-54) in Stevens Point on Saturday, scored the final nine points of Sunday's contest after Marian College cut the deficit to 61-58 with 2:37 remaining. The Sabres (3-2) led the Titans only twice in the game (11-10 and 17-16 in the first half) and tied UW-Oshkosh on two occasions (49-49 and 51-51 in the second half). UW-Oshkosh led Marian College 32-26 at halftime.

Sophomore forward Tim Dworak led UW-Oshkosh in scoring for the third consecutive game, tallying 22 points on 8 of 15 shooting from the field and 6 of 9 shooting from the free throw line. Other double-digit scorers for the Titans were senior guard Justin Kamps with 14 points, senior forward Aric Vaubel with 13 points and sophomore forward Scott Sowinski with 10. Eric Muench led Marian College in scoring with 14 points.

UW-Oshkosh posted a 36-32 rebound advantage over Marian College, with Dworak grabbing nine, Kamps seven and Sowinski and Vaubel six each to lead the way.

Titans Raise Record To 3-0

The UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team remained perfect during the young 2000-01 season by defeating Edgewood College, 65-54, on Saturday (Nov. 25) night at UW-Stevens Point's Quandt Fieldhouse.

Edgewood College (2-3) took a 7-4 lead before UW-Oshkosh (3-0) went on a 16-4 scoring run to post a 20-11 advantage with 9:46 remaining in the first half. The Titans, who opened the game by making 10 of their first 14 field goal attempts, led 30-24 at intermission as sophomore forward Scott Sowinski tossed in a team-high nine points. UW-Oshkosh shot 52.6 percent (10-19) from the field in the opening half, considerably better than the 31.3 percent (10-32) shooting by the Eagles.

In the second half, UW-Oshkosh held a double-digit lead throughout most of the 20 minutes. The Titans led by as many as 14 points (42-28 with 15:15 remaining) in the second half and by as few as five (48-43 with 10:03 remaining).

Sophomore forward Tim Dworak led UW-Oshkosh in scoring with 18 points, while Sowinski and senior forward Aric Vaubel added 13 each. Senior guard Justin Kamps aided the Titans' winning effort by recording 11 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Steve Williams led Edgewood College in scoring with 13 points.

UW-Oshkosh concluded the contest shooting 50 percent (22-44) from the field, 81 percent (17-21) from the free throw line and posting a 40-21 rebound advantage over the Lake Michigan Conference foe.

Impressive Free Throw Shooting Propels Titans To Victory

With the aid of one of the top free throw shooting performances in NCAA Division III history, the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team rolled to an 80-55 victory over St. Mary's University on Wednesday (Nov. 22) night in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Oshkosh shot a blistering 94.7 percent from the charity stripe, making 36 of its 38 attempts. The Titans' marksmanship at the free throw line just missed breaking a NCAA Division III record, a mark of 97.1 percent (34-35) set by Rochester Institute of Technology against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Feb. 16, 1980. UW-Oshkosh made 20 of 21 free throw attempts in the first half and 16 of 17 tries in the second half. During one stretch of the contest the Titans made a school-record 33 straight free throws.

UW-Oshkosh (2-0) trailed by as many as five points in the first half before pulling to a 28-28 tie with 3:05 left in the opening period. At that stage of the game the Titans were only four of 16 shooting from the field, but 20 of 21 shooting from the free throw line. UW-Oshkosh closed the first half with a 6-4 scoring run to lead 34-32 at intermission.

Down 41-40 at the 15:56 mark of the second half, UW-Oshkosh stormed ahead of the Cardinals (0-2) by going on a 22-3 scoring run to lead 62-44 with 6:58 remaining in the game. The Titans limited St. Mary's University to only 23.3 percent (7-30) field goal shooting in the second half, including 1-11 behind the three-point line.

Senior forward Aric Vaubel led UW-Oshkosh in scoring with 19 points, including 13 of 14 shooting from the free throw line. Sophomore forward Tim Dworak added 18 points, including 10 of 10 from the free throw line, and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. It was the first double-double of Dworak's young career. Senior guard Jason Boll led the Cardinals in scoring with 11 points.

Titans Rout NCAA Division II Rangers In Season Opener

The UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team won its season opener for the 16th time in 17 years by defeating UW-Parkside, 78-57, on Friday (Nov. 17) night in Kolf Sports Center. The victory was the Titans' eighth in the last 12 meetings with the NCAA Division II Rangers, including a 54-53 win in last year's season opener.

UW-Oshkosh (1-0) got a head start en route to its victory over UW-Parkside by jumping out to a 10-0 advantage and holding the Rangers scoreless during the first 5:54 of the game. The Titans led by as many as 15 points in the opening stanza before UW-Parkside cut the deficit to 36-28 at intermission. UW-Oshkosh held a double-digit lead the final 15:07 of the game, including a 25-point margin (72-47) with 5:53 remaining.

UW-Oshkosh, now 45-8 in its last 53 games against non-conference opponents, made 19 of its 43 field goal attempts (44.2 percent) and 38 of its 49 free throw tries (77.6 percent). UW-Parkside shot just 31.6 percent (18-57) from the field and 66.7 percent (16-24) from the charity stripe. The Rangers missed their first 10 field goal attempts and concluded the first half shooting just 27.6 percent (18-29).

Senior Aric Vaubel led the Titans with 20 points and eight rebounds, while senior Justin Kamps added 17 points and seven rebounds and sophomore Tim Dworak 13 points and two rebounds. Vaubel scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds in the first half. Brian Coffman paced UW-Parkside (0-1) in scoring with 18 points, including 16 in the first half.
