field, 35.7 percent (5-14) from beyond the arc and 82.4 percent
(14-17) from the free-throw line. The Blue Devils caromed 29 rebounds,

Titans Roll Past Blugolds
| The
UW-Oshkosh men’s basketball team expected to see two things
during Saturday’s (Feb. 10) WIAC game at UW-Eau Claire –
long-range shots flying over-head and long rebounds caroming in
the other direction.
The Blugolds entered the contest attempting the third-most three-pointers
in the conference and trailed only UW-Superior when it came to offensive
rebounds. But the Titans showed them a thing or two about both and
cleaned up for a 77-54 win, their seventh in the last eight games.
As impressive as the advantage on the scoreboard was, it didn't
hold a candle to UW-Oshkosh’s edge on the glass, where it
bested UW-Eau Claire 36-19, including 13-6 on the offensive board.
The Blugolds were very much alive and kicking just after the 10-minute
mark, when Matt Riley dropped in a three pointer that pulled the
hosts to within 15-13. From there, UW-Oshkosh
(19-4/11-3), which had six turnovers at that point of the
game, did not commit another miscue to close the half. This ball
security lead to a 22-7 scoring run and a 37-20 advanatage at the
break.
After UW-Eau Calaire (10-13/3-11) closed the deficit to 49-37, UW-Oshkosh's
Matt Miller (So. • Hudson) fired his fourth three-pointer
of the game to put the finishing toughes on a 12-0 scoring run by
the Titans for a 61-37 lead – its biggest of the night.
Miller scored all 12 of his points from beyond the arc and was one
of six Titans in double figures. D.J. Marsh (Fr. • Bayside)
topped that list with 15 points, followed by Jordan Johnson (Jr.
• Waupaca) with 14, Kerry Gibson (Sr. • Jefferson) with
12, and Jim Capelle (Sr. • Wisconsin Dells) and Chad Doedens
(Sr. • Cedarburg) with 10 each.
Jared Bardon led UW-Eau Claire with 18 points and Dan Beyer added
10, but UW-Oshkosh didn’t allow another Blugold to score more
than six points.

Titans
Take Care Of Blue Devils
| D.J.
Marsh (Fr. • Bayside) sat at the end of the UW-Oshkosh men’s
basketball team’s bench, clapping along with everyone else
as veterans Jim Capelle (Wisconsin Dells), Chad Doedens (Cedarburg),
Kerry Gibson (Jefferson) and Nathan Wesener (Potter) – the
other starters – were introduced as part of senior night.
When the introductions ended, he sat for a moment before joining
his teammates in the huddle without having his name called.
Make no mistake however, by the end of the WIAC contest against
UW-Stout, everyone in the gym knew the fifth Titans' starter.
Marsh tossed in 19 points, hit all three of his three-point attempts
and connected on 6-of-8 shots from the field as UW-Oshkosh cruised
to a 79-61 win in a game held on Saturday (Feb. 3) in Kolf Sports
Center.
After 15 minutes of play, the hosts had the Blue Devils staring
at a 23-point deficit that only dipped below double digits ever-so-briefly
in the second half.
Almost everyone who took the court for UW-Oshkosh in the opening
period had a hand in that early success, most noticeably Capelle,
who notched 14 points by intermission.
After the break, the Titans had to weather just one more storm as
UW-Stout whittled their deficit down to 47-39 with 12 minutes showing
on the clock in the second half.
A pair of three-point
baskets by Capelle and eight straight points by Marsh later in the
period kept the Blue Devils firmly in the background.
Capelle finished
the night with 24 points, Gibson added nine points, seven rebounds
and six assists and Doedens tallied seven assists and six points.
UW-Oshkosh finished
the contest shooting 53.2 percent from the floor (25-47), 56.2 percent
from the three-point line (9-16) and 80 percent from the free-throw
line (20-25). UW-Stout shot 42.9 percent (21-49) from the field,
35.7 percent (5-14) from beyond the arc and 82.4 percent from the
charity stripe (14-17).

Eighth-Ranked Titans Shut Down
Top-Ranked Pointers
| Having
appeared almost invincible during the month of January, UW-Stevens
Point’s offense was finally shut down as the UW-Oshkosh men's
basketball team handed the Pointers their first conference loss
with a 72-55 setback in front of a sold out Quandt Fieldhouse on
Wednesday (Jan. 24) in Stevens Point.
UW-Stevens Point, the top-ranked team in the NCAA Division III by
D3hoops.com, had won their past six games by an average of 34.7
points per game and were held 27 points below their season average.
The loss dropped the Pointers to 16-2 overall and 9-1 in the WIAC.
Eighth-ranked UW-Oshkosh moved within one game of UW-Stevens Point
for first place in the WIAC standings and improved to 16-3 overall
and 8-2 in league play.
The game was played in front of a capacity crowd of 2,713 fans,
but a 15-0 UW-Oshkosh scoring run in the first half and a 14-0 spurt
in the second half kept the home crowd fairly quiet for much of
the contest.
UW-Stevens Point had won 21 of its last 23 games against ranked
teams, though one of the other losses was a defeat at UW-Oshkosh
last year. It was the second time the Titans have beaten the Pointers
when they were ranked No.1, handing them a similar 74-59 setback
at Oshkosh in the final game of the 2004-05 regular season.
UW-Stevens Point hit three consecutive three-pointers and got an
inside basket from Jerome Wotachek to take a 23-15 lead with 7:10
left in the first half. However, the Titans took over from that
point as Dane Seckar-Anderson (So. • Oshkosh) scored the next
six points to spark a 15-point run. UW-Stevens Point had five missed
shots and four turnovers during the run that ended on a three-pointer
by Pete Rortvedt with 54 seconds left in the half to pull the Pointers
within 30-26 at halftime.
UW-Oshkosh led 32-30 with 17:45 remaining in the game and went on
a 14-0 run with D.J. Marsh (Fr. • Bayside) and Kerry Gibson
(Sr. • Jefferson) scoring all 14 points. Marsh scored the
final eight points of the spurt, hitting back-to-back three pointers
and a driving layup for a 46-30 advantage with 13 minutes left.
UW-Stevens Point made three straight three-pointers and quickly
pulled within 48-40 with 9:30 left. However, two more Marsh layups
put the Titans ahead 52-42 and they led by at least 10 points the
rest of the way. Marsh scored 14 of his 19 points in the second
half and was seven-for-nine from the field.
The Pointers missed seven straight three-pointers and UW-Oshkosh
made 11-of-12 free throws in the final two minutes to provide the
final margin. UW-Stevens Point shot just 37.7 percent from the field
and had 12 three-pointers and eight two-point baskets. The Titans
outscored the Pointers 38-14 inside the paint as Gibson matched
a season-high with 23 points while adding five blocks.
UW-Oshkosh held a commanding 39-22 rebounding advantage as three
different players led the team with eight boards apiece. The Titans
also shot 54.3 percent from the field. Jim Capelle (Sr. •
Wisconsin Dells) added 19 points for UW-Oshkosh, while Bryan Beamish
led UW-Stevens Point with 14 points.

for UW-Superior.
Saturday’s victory moved UW-Oshkosh into sole possession of
second place in the WIAC standings. The Titans trail first place
UW-Stevens Point (16-1/9-0 WIAC) by two games in the league standings.
UW-Oshkosh will have an opportunity to close its deficit in the

20th-Ranked Eagles Put Brakes
On 10th-Ranked Titans' Winning Streak
| A
matchup between two of the top men's basketball teams in the NCAA
Division III went down to the final buzzer as 20th-ranked UW-La
Crosse edged 10th-ranked UW-Oshkosh, 48-47, on Wednesday (Jan. 10)
in La Crosse.
UW-La Crosse
(10-4/5-1 WIAC) scored its winning points on Brandon Brown's jump
shot from the lane with 18 seconds left in the contest. His basket
came after UW-Oshkosh's D.J. Marsh (Fr. • Bayside) missed
the front end of a bonus situation from the free-throw line with
26 seconds remaining.
UW-Oshkosh (12-3/4-2
WIAC) took the possession after Brown's basket and worked the clock
down to four seconds before calling timeout. Following a UW-La Crosse
timeout, UW-Oshkosh's Jim Capelle (Sr. • Wisconsin Dells)
missed a jump shot with two seconds to play and the Eagles grabbed
the rebound to secure the victory and snap the Titans' 10-game winning
streak.
UW-La Crosse
led throughout the first half, including by as many as 10 points.
The Eagles led 26-18 at halftime and led 30-18 with 18:29 remaining
in the game.
UW-Oshkosh cut
its deficit to 33-31 with 13:35 left after a 13-3 scoring run. The
Titans tied the contest at 41-41 after a Kerry Gibson (Sr. •
Jefferson) jump shot with 3:23 remaining, but the Eagles' Joe Werner
hit a jumper to give UW-La Crosse a two-point lead with just over
three minutes left. Gibson then tied it again on a dunk before Werner
hit one-of-two free throws with 2:23 remaining to give UW-La Crosse
a 44-43 lead.
After a UW-Oshkosh missed jumper, Werner scored on a dunk to make
it a three-point game with 1:37 remaining. Capelle then hit a jumper
for UW-Oshkosh with 1:20 left and later gave the Titans' their first
lead of the game at 47-46 with 48 seconds remaining on a pair of
free throws. After Chris Ask missed the front end of a one-and-one
for UW-La Crosse with 38 seconds left, Marsh missed his free throw

Titans Outrun High-Scoring Pioneers

That's the kind of play the UW-Oshkosh
men's basketball team experienced as it defeated Grinnell College

Grinnell College has entertained basketball
fans the past two decades with an up-tempo system that revolves
around creating turnovers and taking a multitude of three-point

UW-Oshkosh (11-2), ranked 18th in the
NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com. tied its third-highest scoring

Titans Trip Green Knights
| On any other night, UW-Oshkosh head men’s basketball
coach Ted Van Dellen would look at a stat sheet that showed a 50
percent conversion rate at the free-throw line and try to keep down
his lunch.
Fortunately for the Titans – and Van Dellen’s
gastro intestinal tract – they were able to rise above that
wretched performance and visiting St. Norbert College to snag a
64 52 win Saturday (Dec. 16) in Kolf Sports Center.
“The big frustration tonight was those doggone free throws,”
Van Dellen said. “There’s not much you can do to fix
that. We just need to step up and knock them down, be a little tougher
between the ears. It looked like we were trying to wish them in.”
More often than not, those requests weren’t answered, but
they didn’t need to be thanks to a performance that was literally
head and shoulders above the visiting Green Knights.
With its tallest player topping out at 6-foot-6, St. Norbert College
would have needed a stepladder to go eye-to-eye with UW-Oshkosh’s
7-1 center Kerry Gibson (Sr. • Jefferson), who wouldn’t
have known he was even being guarded if not for the contact he absorbed
while tossing in six of his game-high 15 points in the first five
minutes.
An emphatic slam capped the early success and gave the Titans (4-2)
an early 10-2 edge, but it was also the last points Gibson scored
until after the four-minute mark. In the meantime, the Green Knights
(2-5) found their range and took a 22-21 lead.
The advantage was short-lived, however, thanks in part to UW-Oshkosh’s
first man off the bench, Jordan Johnson (Jr. • Waupaca), who
scored nine of his season-high 14 points in the first half and treated
his body with the kind of reckless abandonment usually reserved
for a mosh pit.
“That’s part of my role coming off the bench, to give
these guys a spark, Johnson said. “I just do the best I can
when I get out there because the guys expect that and know I’ll
help them pick it up a little bit.”
In the second half, with St. Norbert College down only six at 38-32,
one of Johnson’s freight-train trips to the hoop ended in
a three-point play and kicked off a 16-3 Titan run that included
a couple triples from backup point guard Matt Miller (So. •
Hudson), who spelled a flu-ridden Chad Doedens (Sr. • Cedarburg).
That Miller was able to pick up the slack for the usual starter
was no surprise on a night when the bench played a monster role
for UW-Oshkosh, which apparently doesn’t believe in a holiday
break, proved by a stretch that sees it play three games in five
nights.

Titans Knock Off Blue Devils
| Jim Capelle (Sr. • Wisconsin Dells) scored
28 points to tie a career high as the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball

consecutive game for the Titans, made eight of his 21 shots from
the field, including four three-point baskets, and all eight of
his free throws. His performance also featured three assists, three
rebounds and one steal.
UW-Oshkosh (3-2/2-1 WIAC) also benefited

eight points and six rebounds of Chad Doedens (Sr. • Cedarburg)
and the six points, seven rebounds and four assists of Kerry Gibson
(Sr. • Jefferson).

in the NCAA Division III Championship a year ago, was led by the
17 points and three assists of Jerrel Enerson-Matthews and the 10
points and eight rebounds of Jacob Nonemacher.

lead with 3:28 remaining in the first half. The Titans went to intermission
leading 34-28 as Capelle paced the Titans with 12 first-half points.
Capelle added 16 more points in the
second half to help UW-Oshkosh maintain a lead of six-plus points
the entire period. The Titans extended their halftime advantage
to 51-38 before the Blue Devils sliced their deficit to 54-46 on
a basket by Nonemacher with 3:59 left in the game. Capelle then
hit a three-point basket with 3:20 remaining, and with the assistance
of an UW-Stout technical foul, drained four straight free throws
with 2:31 left to give UW-Oshkosh its largest lead of the game at
61-46. The teams exchanged baskets the rest of the way as UW-Oshkosh
gained revenge for a pair of losses to UW-Stout a year ago.
UW-Oshkosh won the contest despite
shooting a season-low 39.6 percent (21-53) from the field. The Titans
made seven of their 20 three-point shots (35 percent) and 15 of
their 19 free throws (78.9 percent).
UW-Stout shot 45.8 percent (22-48)
from the field. The Blue Devils converted on four of their seven
three-point shots (57.1 percent) and two of their five three throws
(40 percent). UW-Stout didn't attempt a free throw in the second
half.
UW-Oshkosh out-rebounded UW-Stout,
33-27, and committed just 10 turnovers. |
