Blue Devils Burn Titans In Second Half

John FlaniganJade RoystonPaul WojahnThe UW-Stout men's basketball team outshot UW-Oshkosh, 65 percent to 22 percent, in the second half as the Blue Devils notched a 70-48 victory over the Titans on Saturday (Feb. 6) in Menomonie.

During the closing 20 minutes, UW-Stout buried 15-of-23 (65.2 percent) shots from the field, including 4-of-5 attempts behind the three-point arc. UW-Oshkosh made just 5-of-23 (21.7 percent) shots from the field as it was outscored in the period, 44-20.

UW-Stout (12-9/7-6 WIAC) scored nine of the first 11 points of the second half to overcome a 28-26 halftime deficit. Mahlon Thomas tallied a jumper and a dunk, while Jordan Nelson put his team ahead for good with a lay-up. Eric Hostetter followed with two three-point baskets and a free throw to give the Blue Devils a 39-34 advantage with 14:16 to play.

UW-Oshkosh (9-12/4-9 WIAC) pulled within 39-38 on a pair of free throws by Jade Royston (Fr. • Wisconsin Dells). The game’s next nine points went to UW-Stout, including a three-point play and lay-up from Jerrod Buchholtz. Nelson’s bucket in the paint gave the Blue Devils a 48-38 lead with 7:39 left.

UW-Stout extended its scoring run to 28-5 on six points by Nelson, five by Hostetter and four by both Thomas and Erik Olson. The scoring spree gave the Blue Devils a 67-43 lead with 1:59 remaining.

Neither team had its offense going until midway through the first half. Cory Wittwer (Jr. • Fall Creek) converted a shot from behind the arc to tie the score at 8. UW-Stout then had four different players score points as it took a 17-14 lead with 6:43 to go in the period.

UW-Oshkosh put together a 14-5 scoring run to go ahead, 28-22, with 2:02 left before the break. After a lay-up by John Flanigan (So. • Oshkosh), Wittwer gave the Titans a six-point cushion by swishing a deep three-point shot. Back-to-back baskets by Grant Franzen cut UW-Stout's deficit to two points at Intermission.




D.J. Marsh (Sr. • Bayside) scored eight points to move into fifth place on UW-Oshkosh’s career scoring list with 1,694 points. He added 10 rebounds, in addition to nine points and seven rebounds from John Flanigan (So. • Oshkosh) and eight points apiece by Cory Wittwer (Jr. • Fall Creek) and Paul Wojahn (Fr. • Oshkosh).



UW-Oshkosh finished with a season-low in shooting at 27.8 percent (15-54). The Titans added 19.2 percent accuracy (5-26) from deep and an 81.3 percent rate (13-16) at the foul line while outrebounding UW-Stout, 37-23.

Committing just six turnovers, the Blue Devils hit 26-of-46 field goals (56.5 percent) and 13-of-15 free throws (86.7 percent). UW-Stout nailed 5-of-12 long-range attempts (41.7 percent) as it forced UW-Oshkosh into 19 turnovers.

Hostetter totaled 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting to lead all scorers. Thomas tacked on 13 points and five rebounds for the Blue Devils, while Jordan Nelson contributed 10 points.

UW-Oshkosh aims for a victorious performance at UW-La Crosse on Wednesday (Feb. 10).

Pioneers' Sharp Shooting Too Much For Titans

John FlaniganD.J. MarshCory WittwerUW-Platteville shot a season-best 57.9 percent from the field and made 33 free throws to pull away for an 83-69 victory over the UW-Oshkosh men’s basketball team on Wednesday (Feb. 3) in Kolf Sports Center.

The Pioneers were successful on 22 of their 38 shots, including 6-of-11 attempts (54.5 percent) behind the three-point arc. UW-Platteville (12-8/6-5 WIAC), which led the entire contest, made 89.2 percent of its 37 free throws, grabbed 31 rebounds and committed 11 turnovers.

Curt Hanson led the Pioneers with 24 points and six assists while knocking down his first five shots from the field. UW-Platteville also received 21 points and six rebounds from Eric Wall and 20 points and eight rebounds from Mike Shaw.

D.J. Mash (Sr. • Bayside) made a lay-up to cut UW-Oshkosh's deficit to 7-6 with 13:57 left in the first half. Shaw then drained a three-point shot and lay-up and Hanson a lay-up and three free throws to help UW-Platteville build a 19-9 lead with 10:38 remaining in the opening period.

A deep jumper by Wittwer cut UW-Oshkosh's deficit to 24-18, but Hanson followed by drilling a three-point shot to start an 8-2 scoring run for the Pioneers. UW-Platteville opened up a 39-24 advantage on a three-point play by Wall and settled for a 41-30 lead at intermission.

Hanson compiled six quick points and Wall four as the Pioneers made six of their first seven shots in the second half. UW-Platteville then took a 58-39 lead on a Hanson three-pointer with 12:48 to play.

UW-Platteville held a lead of 12-plus points for the next 10 minutes. Three long-range connections from Wittwer in the next 58 seconds got UW-Oshkosh as close as 74-63 with 1:55 left.

The Pioneers did not attempt a field goal during the final 4:49 of play as they scored 17 points at the free-throw line.

Marsh, who made his 100th consecutive start for the Titans, paced all scorers with 25 points. He also counted four steals, three rebounds and two assists. Wittwer added 21 points and three rebounds, John Flanigan (So. • Oshkosh) 11 points and seven rebounds and Greg Schrimpf (So. • Manitowoc) 10 points and one assist.

UW-Oshkosh (9-11/4-8 WIAC) shot 45.3 percent (24-53) from the field, including 38.9 percent (7-18) behind the three-point arc. The Titans made 66.7 percent (14-21) of their free throws while grabbing 20 rebounds and committing nine turnovers.

UW-Oshkosh goes for its third straight WIAC road victory when it visits UW-Stout on Saturday (Feb. 6).

Titans Clip Falcons

D.J. MarshCory WittwerPaul WojahnCory Wittwer (Jr. • Fall Creek) tallied 20 points, including the last five of a game-clinching 10-0 scoring run, as the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team hung on for a 71-69 victory over UW-River Falls on Saturday (Jan. 30) in River Falls.

UW-River Falls (8-12/2-9 WIAC) had a chance to win the game and sweep the season series with the Titans, but Wade Guerin's three-point shot bounced off the rim at the final horn.

The teams were tied at 46 before UW-Oshkosh (9-10/4-7 WIAC) pulled ahead 53-48 on a three-point play by D.J. Marsh (Sr. • Bayside) with 5:44 to go. Guerin then finished off a three-point play of his own to get the Falcons within 53-51 with 5:27 remaining.

The next 10 points belonged to UW-Oshkosh as the Titans built a 63-51 lead with 2:41 left. UW-Oshkosh's scoring run featured a three-point play by John Flanigan (So. • Oshkosh), a lay-up by Marsh and a three-point basket and a lay-up from Wittwer.

Trailing 65-53 with 1:59 left, UW-River Falls staged a 16-5 scoring run to cut its difference to 70-69 with seven seconds remaining. The rally featured six points by Spencer Shelman, five by Guerin and three by Brady Hannigan. Guerin marked the Falcons' last five points of the scoring run, including a three-point play that pulled UW-River Falls to a 70-69 deficit.

UW-Oshkosh's Wittwer was fouled with six seconds left and he created the game's final score by sinking one of two free throws.

A trio of three-point plays got UW-River Falls off to a fast start. First, Shelman and Guerin each knocked down three-point shots. With 15:17 on the clock, Jontae Koonkaew completed a lay-up and a free throw to put the Falcons ahead 9-2.

UW-Oshkosh responded with the long ball, getting three-point baskets from Paul Wojahn (Fr. • Oshkosh) and Wittwer to pull within 13-12.

A Shelman bucket put the Falcons ahead 27-21, but UW-Oshkosh tallied the next seven points to take a 28-27 lead on Greg Schrimpf’s (So. • Manitowoc) three-pointer. The Falcons owned a 31-28 lead at the break after Jake Voeltz’s steal and lay-up.

Schrmipf opened the second half for the Titans with a three-point basket. Following two free throws by Guerin, UW-Oshkosh went ahead 34-33 on a three-point basket by Wittwer with 18:51 to play.

The teams went on to play to tied scores at 35, 39, 42, 44 and 46 before UW-Oshkosh jumped to its 53-48 advantage.

Witter, who finished the contest with four three-point baskets, backed up his 20-point effort with three rebounds, two steals and one assist. Marsh, who fouled out with 1:31 to play, totaled 15 points, seven rebounds and two assists. UW-Oshkosh also received 10 points from Schrimpf and nine points and five rebounds from Wojahn.

Guerin led the Falcons with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Hannigan and Shelman tacked on 16 and 11 points, respectively.

UW-Oshkosh shot 47.1 percent (24-51) from the field and 72.7 percent (16-22) from the free-throw line. The Titans made seven of their season-high 21 three-point attempts (33.3 percent) while collecting 32 rebounds and committing 11 turnovers.

UW-River Falls achieved 46.4 percent (26-56) shooting from the field and 66.7 percent (12-18) accuracy from the free-throw line. The Falcons shot 33.3 percent (5-15) behind the three-point arc while grabbing 33 rebounds and committing 11 turnovers.

The Titans go for their third straight victory when UW-Platteville visits the Kolf Sports Center on Wednesday (Feb. 3).

Titans Shine Bright In Win Over Blugolds

John FlaniganCory WittwerPaul WojahnEight players with five-plus points, including four double-figure scorers, lifted the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team to a 74-61 triumph over UW-Eau Claire on Wednesday (Jan. 27) in Eau Claire.

UW-Oshkosh (8-10/3-7 WIAC) took a 14-13 lead on Paul Wojahn's (Fr. • Oshkosh) jump shot and stayed on top the rest of the game. The win enabled the Titans to sweep the season series with the Blugolds for the third time in five years.

D.J. Marsh (Sr. • Bayside) paced UW-Oshkosh with 14 points, while Wojahn added 11 points and six rebounds, John Flanigan (So. • Oshkosh) contributed 11 points and Cory Wittwer (Jr. • Fall Creek) 10.

Wittwer scored five of UW-Oshkosh’s opening seven points as the teams were tied at 7 after three minutes of play. Facing a 13-12 deficit, the Titans ran off six straight to go in front for good. Steven Waudby (Sr. • Marquette, Mich.) tallied the last four points of the scoring spurt, including a jump shot that put UW-Oshkosh up 18-13 with 10:56 on the clock.

UW-Eau Claire (11-7/4-6 WIAC) pulled within one point (18-17) on Marcus Ruh’s lay-up, but UW-Oshkosh bounced right back with eight unanswered points. Brian Washington (Fr. • Waukesha) and Flanigan both scored three points before Wojahn sank a bucket to extend the Titans' advantage to 26-17 with 5:57 left in the half.

Ruh drained a three-point shot with 2:35 left before intermission, but UW-Oshkosh pulled away with the period's last seven points. Flanigan responded with his own long jumper three seconds before the horn to give the Titans a 35-22 lead at the break.

Amadou Fofana’s lay-up closed out a 6-0 scoring run to open the second half and bring the Blugolds within 35-28. Once again the Titans strung together eight straight points, with consecutive three-point baskets by Greg Schrimpf (So. • Manitowoc) upping UW-Oshkosh's lead to 43-28 with 15:22 to play.

UW-Oshkosh's lead varied between 11 (72-61) and 19 points (57-38) for the remainder of the contest.

Josh Prince scored 18 points and Ruh 13 to lead UW-Eau Claire. The Blugolds also acquired nine points, five assists and four rebounds from Colin Boone and five points and 10 rebounds from Geoff Probst.

UW-Oshkosh shot 48.9 percent (22-45) from the field, including 54.5 percent (6-11) behind the three-point line. The Titans shot 77.4 percent (24-31) from the free-throw stripe while grabbing 32 rebounds and committing 12 turnovers.

UW-Eau Claire shot 40 percent (22-55) from the field, 33.3 percent (6-18) behind the three-point arc and 57.9 percent (11-19) from the free-throw line. The Blugolds collected 38 rebounds and committed 13 turnovers.

UW-Oshkosh remains on the road to play UW-River Falls on Saturday (Jan. 30).

Top-Ranked Pointers Clamp Down Titans

D.J. MarshBrian WashingtonCory WittwerMatt Moses piled up a career-best 34 points to lead nationally ranked UW-Stevens Point past the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team, 73-54, on Saturday (Jan. 23) in Kolf Sports Center.

Moses nearly tripled his scoring average of 12.2 points per contest by making 11-of-14 shots from the field, including five three-point baskets, and all seven free throws.

UW-Stevens Point (17-1/8-1 WIAC), which entered the game ranked first in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com, took the lead three minutes into play and never relinquished it.

The Pointers jumped out to a 9-2 advantage on a three-point play by Moses. He then buried a long three-point shot to give UW-Stevens Point a 12-4 lead. Jerrel Harris hung in midair and converted another hoop as the Pointers took a 14-4 lead with 12:43 left in the first half.

After Paul Wojahn (Fr. • Oshkosh) cut UW-Oshkosh's deficit to 25-15 with a lay-up, Moses drilled three-point shots on three straight possessions to give the Pointers a 34-18 lead with 4:06 left in the opening period.

Jade Royston (Fr. • Wisconsin Dells) completed a three-point play to pull the Titans within 34-21, but UW-Stevens Point scored the last four points of the stanza to take a 38-21 lead to intermission.

After going scoreless in the first half, D.J. Marsh (Sr. • Bayside) made two free throws and lay-up to slice UW-Oshkosh's deficit to 41-28. Moses responded with a jump shot and Harris a three-pointer as UW-Stevens Point built a 48-30 advantage with 13:18 remaining.

UW-Stevens Point extended its lead by counting 10 unanswered points midway through the second half. Moses tallied six points during the spurt, including a turnaround jumper that put his team up 60-34 with 8:15 left.

Marsh tallied six of the next nine UW-Oshkosh points to keep things interesting. Moses made sure the Pointers didn’t lose control, hitting a three-point shot and another jumper to give UW-Stevens Point a 69-43 lead with 3:37 to play.

UW-Oshkosh (7-10/2-7 WIAC), which suffered a 73-67 loss to UW-Stevens Point on Jan. 6, created the final score with a game-ending 11-4 scoring run.

Marsh scored 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Titans in both categories. He entered the game averaging 23.5 points per game, the fifth-highest mark in the NCAA Division III.

UW-Oshkosh also received 10 points and two assists from Cory Wittwer (Jr. • Fall Creek), nine points and four rebounds from Brian Washington (Fr. • Waukesha) and seven points and two rebounds from Wojahn.

In addition to the 34 points and five rebounds by Moses, UW-Stevens Point also obtained 11 points, six rebounds and five assists from Nick Krull and eight points from Harris. The trio helped the Pointers record their 10th straight victory.

UW-Oshkosh shot 40.8 percent (20-49) from the field, including 33.3 percent (5-15) behind the three-point line. UW-Oshkosh made all nine of its free throws while grabbing 21 rebounds and committing 11 turnovers.

UW-Stevens Point converted 59.1 percent (26-54) of its shots from the field, 44.4 percent (8-18) of its three-point attempts and 92.9 percent (13-14) of its free throws. The Pointers collected 23 rebounds and committed nine turnovers.

UW-Oshkosh journeys to UW-Eau Claire on Wednesday (Jan. 27).

UW-Oshkosh To Host Nationally Ranked UW-Stevens Point Basketball Teams

The UW-Oshkosh men’s basketball team hosts the top-ranked squad in the NCAA Division III when UW-Stevens Point visits the Kolf Sports Center on Saturday (Jan. 23) for a 3 p.m. contest.

UW-Stevens Point (16-1/7-1 WIAC) received all 25 first-place votes in this week’s D3hoops.com poll. The Pointers are riding a nine-game win streak, with their only loss this season coming in overtime (67-60) to UW-Whitewater on Dec. 10.

UW-Oshkosh last defeated a number-one team on Jan. 24, 2007, when the eighth-ranked Titans took down the Pointers, 72-55, in Stevens Point. Earlier this month (Jan. 6), UW-Oshkosh dropped a 73-67 decision to the Pointers in Stevens Point.

Forward D.J. Marsh (Sr. • Bayside) is UW-Oshkosh’s leader in almost every statistical category. He averages 23.5 points and 7.8 rebounds per contest to lead the Titans in both areas. Marsh currently ranks fifth in the NCAA Division III in scoring. As a team, UW-Oshkosh (7-9/2-6 WIAC) is shooting a nation-leading 82.1 percent (285-347) from the free-throw line.

The UW-Oshkosh women’s basketball team takes to the Kolf Sports Center hardwood prior to the UW-Oshkosh men and will host nationally ranked UW-Stevens Point in a 1 p.m. contest.

UW-Stevens Point (14-3/6-2 WIAC) enters the game ranked 20th in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com. The Pointers own a nine-game winning streak, with their last loss being a 76-61 setback to UW-Whitewater on Dec. 10.

UW-Oshkosh (6-11/1-7 WIAC), which suffered a 51-47 loss at UW-Stevens Point on Jan. 6, has won two of its last three home games. Last Saturday (Jan. 16), the Titans posted an 80-68 home victory over UW-Stout.

UW-Oshkosh has five players averaging better than eight points per game, including guard Katie Kitzke (Fr. • South Milwaukee) who averages 10.5 and forward Heidi Baerenwald (So. • Appleton) who averages 9.9.

Eagles Escape From Titans

John FlaniganD.J. MarshBrian WashingtonUW-La Crosse made its last 20 free throws and committed just five turnovers as it recorded a 61-55 win over the UW-Oshkosh men’s basketball team on Wednesday (Jan. 20) in Kolf Sports Center.

In a contest that featured 14 ties, neither squad held a lead of more than four points for the opening 29 minutes of action. The Eagles (13-4/5-3 WIAC) pulled away from a 40-40 deadlock with seven unanswered points and led the rest of the way.

Trevor Stratton, who tallied 18 points and four steals, completed a three-point play to put the Eagles in front 43-40 with 11:51 remaining. UW-La Crosse then got a pair of free throws from Tony Mane and a dunk by Al Chery to take a 47-40 lead with 10:06 left.

D.J. Marsh (Sr. • Bayside) dropped in a pair of lay-ups to slice the Titans' deficit to 53-50, but Austin Scott responded with two free throws for the Eagles. Following a three-point basket by UW-Oshkosh's Cory Wittwer (Jr. • Fall Creek) and two free throws by UW-La Crosse's Chery, Marsh sank a pair of free throws to pull the Titans to within 57-55 with 1:58 left.

UW-La Crosse secured its first win against UW-Oshkosh in five games on two free throws by both Mane and Stratton in the final 15 seconds. UW-Oshkosh was hurt in the final minute by two missed three-point shots, two turnovers and three fouls.

UW-La Crosse took a 9-6 lead on a jump shot and three-point basket by Mane. The Titans’ Wittwer tied the score at 9, while Andy Kretsch's (Jr. • Manitowoc) three-point basket put UW-Oshkosh ahead 14-11 at the 12:15 mark of the opening period.

UW-Oshkosh (7-9/2-6 WIAC) took leads of 18-15 and 20-17 before UW-La Crosse created ties at 20, 22 and 24. Following a lay-up by UW-Oshkosh's Steven Waudby (Sr. • Marquette, Mich.), Mane converted back-to-back lay-ups to give the Eagles a 28-26 lead at the break.

UW-Oshkosh counted the first four points of the second half to take a 32-28 lead with 18:08 to play. Following two free throws by UW-La Crosse's Mane, Marsh made a lay-up to give the Titans a 34-30 advantage with 17:28 left. The Eagles then forced ties at 36 and 38 before taking a 40-38 lead on a lay-up by Stratton with 12:27 remaining.

Achieving his fourth double-double of the season, Marsh amassed 20 points, 10 rebounds and four assists for UW-Oshkosh. The Titans also received eight points and seven rebounds from both Washington and John Flanigan (So. • Oshkosh).

Mane led UW-La Crosse in scoring with 19 points. The Eagles also benefited from the four points and 10 rebounds of Andrew Haass and the eight points, four steals and three rebounds of Chery.

UW-Oshkosh shot 45 percent (18-40) from the field, 37.5 percent (3-8) behind the three-point arc and 80 percent (16-20) from the free-throw line. The Titans grabbed 31 rebounds and committed 17 turnovers.

UW-La Crosse shot 38.8 percent (19-49) from the field, 22.2 percent (2-9) behind the three-point line and 91.3 percent (21-23) from the free-throw stripe. The Eagles collected 25 rebounds.

UW-Oshkosh welcomes UW-Stevens Point, the top-ranked team in the NCAA Division III, to Kolf Sports Center on Saturday (Jan. 23).

Marsh Receives WIAC Player Of The Week Award

D.J. MarshUW-Oshkosh forward D.J. Marsh (Sr. • Bayside) has been selected the WIAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the second time this season and fifth time overall. Marsh received his latest award for games played Jan. 11-17.

Marsh averaged 29.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per contest as UW-Oshkosh lost a 62-58 overtime decision to nationally ranked UW-Whitewater on Jan. 13 and tallied an 87-75 victory over UW-Stout on Jan. 16.

Marsh totaled 59 points on 24-of-41 shooting (58.5 percent) from the field and 10-of-12 shooting (83.3 percent) from the free-throw line. He also collected 21 rebounds, counted four steals, blocked three shots and dished off three assists.

In UW-Oshkosh’s road loss to UW-Whitewater, Marsh scored 26 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, blocked two shots and dished off two assists. The double-double was Marsh’s third of the season.

During the Titans’ home win over UW-Stout, Marsh scored 33 points, snatched nine rebounds and tallied three steals. The contest marked Marsh’s third 30-plus point performance of the season.

Titanic Duo Buries Blue Devils

D.J. MarshGreg SchrimpfCory WittwerD.J. Marsh (Sr. • Bayside) and Greg Schrimpf (So. • Manitowoc) combined for 58 points as the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team posted an 87-75 victory over UW-Stout on Saturday (Jan. 16) in Kolf Sports Center.

Marsh surpassed 30 points for the third time this season on 12-of-17 shooting from the field and 8-of-9 accuracy from the free-throw line. He also grabbed nine rebounds and tallied three steals.

Schrimpf scored a season-high 25 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field and 7-of-7 marksmanship from the free-throw line. All nine of his shots from the field were taken behind the three-point arc.

As a team, UW-Oshkosh (7-8/2-5 WIAC) was strong in all three shooting categories. The Titans made 51 percent (26-51) of their field goal attempts, 47.1 percent (8-17) of their three-point shots and 87.1 percent (27-31) of their free throws.

UW-Stout (7-8/2-5 WIAC) held a 7-2 advantage after Eric Hostetter knocked down a jump shot. Schrimpf and Marsh both followed with three-point baskets to give the Titans an 11-9 lead with 12:33 to play in the first half.

Luke Miller (Sr. • Elk Grove Village, Ill.) hit a jumper at the shot-clock buzzer to put UW-Oshkosh ahead, 16-15. Schrimpf went on to record the Titans’ next nine points on a pair of three-point baskets and a trio of foul shots. His long-range bucket with 6:35 to play in the opening period gave UW-Oshkosh a 25-22 lead.

A 16-6 scoring run put the Titans on top, 38-28, with 3:09 left in the first half. Marsh accounted for the final seven points of the spurt, capping it with a three-point play.

Grant Franzen's lay-up got UW-Stout within 40-35, but the Blue Devils couldn't get any closer the rest of the way.

UW-Oshkosh opened the second stanza with eight of the first 10 points to extend its advantage to 50-37. After missing his initial three-point shot, Cory Wittwer (Jr. • Fall Creek) reloaded on an offensive rebound and buried a long-range jumper to give the Titans a 59-44 lead with 12:16 left.

UW-Oshkosh was up by double digits for the majority of the second half, with its biggest advantage being 17 points at 67-50.

Hostetter later scored seven straight UW-Stout points on a lay-up, two free throws and a three-point basket to pull the Blue Devils within 77-69 with 1:29 remaining.

The Blue Devils had three double-figure scorers as Hostetter marked 24 points, Franzen 12 and Jordan Nelson 10. Jerrod Buchholtz added seven points, five rebounds and three assists.

UW-Stout shot 50 percent (26-52) from the field, 29.4 percent (5-17) behind the three-point line and 69.2 percent (18-26) from the free-throw stripe.

The Titans won the rebounding battle, 35-22, and the turnover count, 13-14.

Fourth-Ranked Warhawks Scratch Out Win Against Titans

John FlaniganD.J. MarshPaul WojahnA dynamic duel between D.J. Marsh (Sr. • Bayside) and Dustin Mitchell ended with a 62-58 overtime victory for UW-Whitewater over the UW-Oshkosh men’s basketball team on Wednesday (Jan. 13) in Whitewater.

UW-Whitewater (14-1/6-0 WIAC), ranked fourth in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com, held the Titans (6-8/1-5 WIAC) to one field goal in the first 4:51 of the extra session. Mitchell finished with 25 points, 12 rebounds and 11-of-13 shooting, while Marsh tallied 26 points as the only other player in double figures.

A Marsh jump shot with 2:14 remaining in the second half got UW-Oshkosh within reach before he followed it up with a three-point play to trail, 51-49. Marsh connected once again to take a 52-51 lead with just 30 seconds left. Mitchell then made a free throw to force overtime with 11 seconds to play.

Cory Wittwer (Jr. • Fall Creek) broke a 52-52 tie two minutes into the extra session with a pair of foul shots. The Warhawks then tied the game on a basket by Dupree Fletcher, who completed the three-point play for the lead with two minutes left.

UW-Whitewater added three more free throws for a four-point advantage (58-54). The Titans got within two points twice, on a Marsh jumper and on a Wittwer lay-up, but four free throws by Alex Edmunds and two by Fletcher sealed the outcome.

Hitting 50 percent of their shots (23-46), the Warhawks also received seven points from Fletcher and nine assists by Phil Negri. UW-Whitewater rounded out the night with 4-of-14 accuracy on three-pointers (28.6 percent) and 12-of-18 conversions (66.7 percent) at the charity stripe.

The Warhawks had the momentum from the start, streaking out to an 11-4 advantage. Negri tallied five early points, while Mitchell dropped in a pair of buckets for the seven-point lead with 13:49 on the clock.

Nolan Free buried a triple to make it 14-7 right after Paul Wojahn (Fr. • Oshkosh) drilled a three-pointer of his own. Mitchell accounted for two more baskets as UW-Whitewater upped its cushion to 20-13 just 4:43 before intermission.

It was a 23-19 Warhawk lead at halftime before each squad saw its top weapon come out strong in the second period. Marsh knocked down two jump shots, but Mitchell answered with a pair of field goals to make it 31-25 with 15:45 to go.

Mitchell tacked on two more baskets following a Free three-pointer as UW-Whitewater upped the margin to 39-28. The Titans didn’t quit, getting long-range jumpers from Sam Mageland (Fr. • Appleton) and Wittwer to cut their deficit to three (39-36) with 10:42 left.

John Flanigan (So. • Oshkosh) stepped up in the final minutes of the contest with an inside basket and a jumper to pull within one (45-44). The Warhawks then got two points on a Mitchell drive and two more from Lucas Burns to go ahead, 49-44, with 5:08 on the second-half clock.

UW-Oshkosh hung around thanks to a 36-29 rebounding advantage, including 17-7 on the offensive end. The Titans hit 39.3 percent of their field goals (24-61), including 3-of-17 from deep (17.6 percent) and seven of their 10 tries at the foul stripe (70 percent).

Wittwer notched nine points, Flanigan contributed eight and Wojahn pitched in seven for the Titans. UW-Oshkosh, which owned a 9-14 discrepancy in turnovers, got 12 boards from Marsh.

The Titans play their first home game in nearly a month when they face UW-Stout on Saturday (Jan. 16) in Kolf Sports Center.

Titans Unable To Put Yellowjackets Out Of Action

D.J. MarshGreg SchrimpfPaul WojahnJake Smith tallied seven of his game-high 22 points during a two-minute stretch in the second half to help UW-Superior notch a 71-59 victory over the UW-Oshkosh men’s basketball team on Saturday (Jan. 9) in Superior.

The Titans (6-7/1-4 WIAC) pulled to within one point (45-44) midway through the final period, but they couldn’t get over the hump as UW-Superior responded with a 12-4 scoring run to take a 57-48 lead with 7:39 left. Smith marked seven straight points during the Yellowjackets' scoring spree, including a three-point play.

Dustin Ritchie knocked down three-point shots on back-to-back possessions to put UW-Superior (8-5/2-3 WIAC) on top 63-50 with 5:56 left. UW-Oshkosh used a Corey Wittwer (Jr. • Fall Creek) three-point basket to cut its deficit to 63-57 with 3:14 remaining, but that six-point difference would be as close as the Titans would get.

Three different UW-Superior players hit a pair of free throws in the final two minutes as the Yellowjackets closed the game shooting 14-of-18 (77.8 percent) from the charity stripe. UW-Superior also shot 51 percent (25-49) from the field and 38.9 percent (7-18) behind the three-point arc.

After the Titans’ Greg Schrimpf (So. • Manitowoc) connected on a pair of three-point shots to tie the game at 9, UW-Superior bounced back to take a 16-9 lead on a pair of three-point baskets by Dan Culy and a lay-up by Smith. Another Culy long-distance connection and a Smith basket put the Yellowjackets up 27-14 with 7:59 left in the opening half.

Down 29-16, UW-Oshkosh started creeping closer on a Schrimpf three-point basket. D.J. Marsh (Sr. • Bayside) then made two lay-ups, Steven Waudby (Sr. • Marquette, Mich.) a free throw and Paul Wojahn (Fr. • Oshkosh) a lay-up to slice the Titans' deficit to 30-26 with 3:16 remaining before the break. Wojahn tallied UW-Oshkosh's last six points of the period as the Titans trailed 35-30 at intermission.

Wittwer made two three-point shots and Marsh two lay-ups early in the second half as UW-Oshkosh cut its deficit to 45-44 with 12:30 left in the contest.

Marsh tallied 20 points to lead the Titans in scoring for the 16th time in 17 games. He also grabbed seven rebounds and recorded two steals. Wojahn added 13 points and nine rebounds, both career bests. Schrimpf and Wittwer contributed nine points each.

Smith scored his 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the field and 4-of-5 shooting from the free-throw line. He also totaled nine rebounds, four assists and three steals. The Yellowjackets also received 14 points from Culy, 11 from Marcus Helland and eight points and 10 rebounds from Greg Roeder.

UW-Oshkosh collected 26 rebounds while tying a season low with eight turnovers. UW-Superior snatched 32 rebounds while committing 11 turnovers.

UW-Oshkosh finished the game shooting 38.9 percent (21-54) from the field, 41.2 percent (7-17) behind the three-point arc and 83.3 percent (10-12) from the free-throw line.

UW-Oshkosh visits nationally ranked UW-Whitewater on Wednesday (Jan. 13).

Second-Ranked Pointers Leap Past Titans

D.J. MarshGreg SchrimpfCory WittwerLouis Hurd's three-point basket with 1:06 left gave UW-Stevens Point the lead for good and helped the nationally ranked Pointers pull out a 73-67 victory over the UW-Oshkosh men’s basketball team on Wednesday (Jan. 6) in Stevens Point.

After a D.J. Marsh (Sr. • Bayside) foul shot put the Titans ahead 65-63 with 1:35 remaining, Hurd received a pass from Jerrel Harris and connected from long distance. UW-Oshkosh (6-6/1-3 WIAC) missed a pair of shots on its next possession before Matt Moses sank five free throws in the final 41 seconds. The Titans turned the ball over with a 69-67 deficit and seven seconds to play.

UW-Stevens Point (12-1/3-1 WIAC), ranked second in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com, had to battle throughout the second half. The Pointers led 35-31, but UW-Oshkosh heated up from behind the arc to come back. After two three-point baskets by Greg Schrimpf (So. • Manitowoc), Cory Wittwer (Jr. • Fall Creek) nailed a three-pointer of his own with 13:32 left to put the Titans up 40-37.

Harris connected on a jump shot and two free throws to tie the game at 43. The Titans’ Brian Washington (Fr. • Waukesha) responded with a three-point play and another basket to put his team ahead 52-48 at the 9:02 mark.

UW-Oshkosh continued to fire from long range, with a Wittwer three-pointer giving the Titans a 57-56 lead. Marsh put the Titans ahead on two more occasions, but Moses made a lay-up with 2:50 remaining to make it a 63-62 advantage for UW-Stevens Point.

The Titans’ costly turnover in the closing seconds was one of 13 UW-Oshkosh giveaways during the contest. UW-Stevens Point committed just six turnovers while converting 53.3 percent (24-45) of its shots from the field. The Pointers made 4-of-8 three-point shots (50 percent) and 21-of-25 free throws (84 percent).

The Pointers pounced on the Titans in the opening minutes as they took a 9-4 lead. Jared Jenkins knocked down a jumper and a free throw during the spurt, while Hurd accounted for the other two baskets.

Marsh took over the offense for UW-Oshkosh, tallying nine points in a row and 11 of his team’s first 13. He swished a three-point shot at the 11:08 mark of the first half, but it was his drive less than a minute later that cut the Titans’ deficit to 14-13.

Jerrel Harris ran off seven straight points to stretch the Pointers’ lead to 21-13 with 9:30 left in the opening period. Wittwer answered that streak with a basket from three-point range to help the Titans battle back. Wittwer then registered the last five UW-Oshkosh points as the Titans earned a 28-28 tie at intermission.

UW-Oshkosh converted 10 of its 19 three-point shots (53.6 percent) to stay with UW-Stevens Point. The Titans made 47.6 percent (20-42) of their field goal attempts and 89.5 percent (17-19) of their free throws.

Marsh posted 22 points and seven rebounds to pace the Titans, who tallied a 25-21 rebounding edge. Wittwer tacked on 13 points, while Schrimpf scored 11 points and Washington grabbed six rebounds.

UW-Stevens Point had just five players score, but four of them racked up at least 16 points. Harris led the Pointers with a career-high 20 points, while Hurd tallied 19 and Moses and Jenkins 16 each. Moses also grabbed a team-best five rebounds.

UW-Oshkosh takes to the court at UW-Superior on Saturday (Jan. 9).

Titans Put Clamps On Sabres

D.J. MarshTaylor PagittJade RoystonJade Royston (Fr. • Wisconsin Dells) turned a steal into a three-point play with 1:48 left as UW-Oshkosh took the lead and held on for a 69-63 victory over the Marian University men's basketball team on Wednesday (Dec. 30) in Fond du Lac.

Deadlocked at 61, Royston grabbed a loose ball and drove to the hoop. He was hammered as his shot fell in to put the Titans ahead. Royston knocked down the ensuing free throw, along with two more a minute later, to make it a 66-61 advantage with 41 seconds left.

D.J. Marsh (Sr. • Bayside) rattled off eight consecutive points to put UW-Oshkosh up 61-57 with 4:07 remaining. The Sabres’ Logan Rankin came back with two buckets of his own to equal the score with 3:13 to play.

Marsh totaled 25 points, nine rebounds and three assists before fouling out with 2:47 to play. The Titans also received a career-high 10 points from Royston, nine points from both John Flanigan (So. • Oshkosh) and Greg Schrimpf (So. • Manitowoc) and a career-high seven points and five rebounds from Taylor Pagitt (Fr. • Edina, Minn.).

Even though there were nine ties, UW-Oshkosh led for the majority of the fast-paced, physical contest. The Titans, who last faced the Sabres during the 2004-05 season, grabbed 34 rebounds, tallied 10 steals and committed 12 turnovers.

After Marian University (4-7) marked the game’s first two points, the Titans scored eight of the next 10. Marsh finished his streak of six in a row with a hook shot to put UW-Oshkosh ahead 8-4 just 3:40 into play.

Rankin, who paced the Sabres with 20 points and six rebounds, knocked down a pair of jump shots to pull his team closer. Joel Clark then drained a three-point shot with 12:33 remaining in the half to tie the game at 15.

UW-Oshkosh (6-5) shared the scoring duties as five players made a basket during their 11-2 scoring run. Schrimpf capped the rally with a three-point shot to give the Titans a 29-19 lead. The Titans led 35-25 before the Sabres cut their deficit to 37-31 at the break.

Six of the Titans’ first eight points after intermission came on Marsh free throws. The Sabres then posted seven straight points, with Colin Lohenry making it a 45-44 deficit with 12 minutes to go. Marian University took leads of 51-49 and 57-55, but the latter advantage was quickly erased due to the string of points by Marsh.

Kevin Hudak dished out five assists for Marian University, which collected 24 rebounds and committed 13 turnovers. Bryan Ashbeck added nine points for the Sabres, while Lohenry tacked on eight.

UW-Oshkosh shot 57.7 percent (15-26) from the field in the first half, but just 33.3 (7-21) in the second. The Titans finished the game shooting 46.8 percent (22-47), including 37.5 (3-8) behind the three-point line. UW-Oshkosh shot 78.6 percent (22-28) from the free-throw line.

Marian University connected on 48.1 percent (25-52) of its shots from the field. The Sabres shot 30 percent (3-10) behind the three-point arc and 62.5 percent (10-16) from the free-throw line.

UW-Oshkosh resumes conference play at nationally-ranked UW-Stevens Point on Wednesday (Jan. 6).

Titans Sink Lakers

John FlaniganD.J. MarshBrian WashingtonUW-Oshkosh recorded its highest shooting percentage in nearly three years as it coasted to an 85-55 victory over the Silver Lake College men’s basketball team on Monday (Dec. 21) in Manitowoc.

UW-Oshkosh shot 61.5 percent (32-52) from the field, including 65.4 (17-26) in the first half, for its best effort since shooting 68.1 percent (49-72) against Grinnell College (Iowa) on January 4, 2007. The Titans also held Silver Lake College to just 33.3 percent (19-57) shooting from the field, the lowest mark by a UW-Oshkosh opponent since UW-Platteville shot 32.1 percent (18-56) on January 2, 2007.

The Titans (5-5) had 12 players score points, including D.J. Marsh (Sr. • Bayside) who tallied 17 and John Flanigan (So. • Oshkosh) who counted 15. Marsh also grabbed six rebounds, blocked two shots and dished of two assists, while Flanigan collected seven rebounds and served three assists.

Brian Washington (Fr. • Waukesha) added eight points and seven rebounds, while Greg Schrimpf (So. • Manitowoc) added nine points and Paul Wojahn (Fr. • Oshkosh) eight points, eight rebounds and three assists.

Silver Lake College, a first-time opponent of UW-Oshkosh, was led by the nine points and three assists of Brian Diorio, nine points of Kayne LaPlante and seven points, two assists and one rebound of Dwight Weathers.

The game was tied at 6 prior to UW-Oshkosh taking control of the contest with a 14-2 scoring run. Marsh opened the streak with a lay-up and then put the Titans ahead 20-8 on a three-point basket with 12:27 left in the first half.

Silver Lake College (0-11) came back with a 15-8 scoring spurt , including two three-point baskets by LaPlante, to cut its deficit to 28-23 with 5:34 to play in the first period. The Titans then scored 11 of the next 15 points to take a 39-27 lead to intermission.

UW-Oshkosh, which also hosts Silver Lake College on Feb. 20 in Kolf Sports Center, began the second half with a 20-6 scoring run. Flanigan accounted for six of those points, while Cory Wittwer (Jr. • Fall Creek) knocked down a jump shot and a three-pointer. Flanigan’s hoop from close range with 11:31 remaining made it a 59-33 UW-Oshkosh advantage.

The margin drifted between 22 and 27 points until the game’s last five minutes. Silver Lake College cut its deficit to 70-48 with 4:37 to go, but UW-Oshkosh capped its performance with a game-ending 15-7 scoring run. The Titans' largest lead of the contest was 85-41 with 52 seconds left.

UW-Oshkosh, which compiled a 43-22 rebounding advantage, shot 46.7 percent (7-15) behind the three-point arc and 82.4 percent (14-17) from the free-throw line. The Titans committed 16 turnovers.

Silver Lake College shot 37.5 percent (6-16) from three-point range and 61.1 percent (11-18) from the free-throw stripe. The Lakers turned the basketball over 11 times.

UW-Oshkosh returns to action with a road game at Marian University on Dec. 30.

Falcons Dial In From Long Distance To Defeat Titans

John FlaniganD.J. MarshBrian WashingtonA season-high 24 points from Jontae Koonkaew and a double-double by Wade Guerin helped UW-River Falls post an 82-73 triumph over the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team on Saturday (Dec. 12) in Kolf Sports Center.

Koonkaew, who scored 18 of his points in the second half, finished the contest shooting 6-of-11 from the field and 10-of-12 from the free throw line. Guerin amassed 15 points and 12 rebounds after counting seven points and nine rebounds in the first half.

UW-River Falls (3-6/1-3 WIAC) fought UW-Oshkosh off by shooting 55.8 percent (24-43) from the field, including 52.9 percent (9-17) behind the three-point line. The Falcons made 78.1 percent (25-32) of their free throws.

UW-Oshkosh (4-5/1-2 WIAC) shot 42.6 percent (26-61) from the field, but just 22.2 percent (4-18) behind the three-point arc. The Titans connected on 17 of their 20 free throws (85 percent).

UW-Oshkosh stormed out of the gate by scoring the first eight points of the contest. After making a beautiful pass for a John Flanigan (So. • Oshkosh) lay-up, D.J. Marsh (Sr. • Bayside) drove for a hoop of his own. Brian Washington (Fr. • Waukesha) then recorded a steal and a slam dunk to give the Titans an 8-0 lead just 3:08 into play.

The next 6:28 saw the Falcons outscore the Titans, 18-2. Koonkaew kicked off the rally with a three-point basket, while Guerin tallied consecutive lay-ups during the middle of the streak. Eric Gilbertson’s bucket at the 10:10 mark put UW-River Falls ahead 18-10.

Six straight points by Marsh, four points by John Flanigan (So. • Oshkosh) and a Cory Wittwer (Jr. • Fall Creek) lay-up cut the Titans' deficit to 21-20 with 6:51 to play in the first half.

The Falcons came back with eight of the next 10 points, including a three-point play from Koonkaew, to take a 29-22 advantage with 4:49 left in the period. UW-River Falls went to intermission with a 32-27 lead.

UW-River Falls opened the second half with a 19-10 scoring run, including three-point baskets by Brady Hannigan and three-point plays by Koonkaew and Jake Voeltz. The Falcons then extended their advantage to 62-44 with 7:59 to play.

UW-Oshkosh bounced back to score 11 of the next 12 points, including five by Greg Schrimpf (So. • Manitowoc), to cut its deficit to 63-55 with 3:56 remaining. The Titans trailed 70-62 with 1:55 to play, but the Falcons iced the victory by making 10 of their final 14 tosses from the free-throw line.

For the fifth time in six games, Marsh scored at least 25 points. He led all players with 29 points, while Flanigan tallied 14 and Washington 11. Marsh topped UW-Oshkosh with nine rebounds as his team earned a 30-27 advantage.

UW-River Falls received 13 points from Voeltz and 11 from Spencer Shelman. Koonkaew dished out a game-best six assists. The Falcons committed 14 turnovers, but the Titans bested that total with just nine of their own.

UW-Oshkosh, which doesn’t play again in Kolf Sports Center until Jan. 16, travels to Manitowoc to battle Silver Lake College on Dec. 21.

Pioneers Stifle Titans

John FlaniganGreg SchrimpfPaul WojahnUW-Platteville held the Titans to just two points over a span of more than 10 minutes as the Pioneers pulled away from the UW-Oshkosh men’s basketball team, 67-47, on Thursday (Dec. 10) in Platteville.

The Pioneers (7-2/2-0 WIAC) posted a 13-2 scoring advantage during the final 4:14 of the first half and the opening 5:48 of the second period. UW-Platteville broke away from a 24-24 tie with Nick Allen’s jump shot and then used Mike Shaw’s three-pointer to take a 30-24 lead at halftime.

After intermission, UW-Platteville got lay-ups from Eric Wall, Curt Hanson and Shaw, who capped a three-point play to go ahead, 37-26, with 15:47 remaining. The Titans’ (4-4/1-1 WIAC) lone field goal in their mid-game slump was a Steven Waudby (Sr. • Marquette, Mich.) lay-up at the 17:39 mark of the closing half.

Paul Wojahn (Fr. • Oshkosh) put in a bucket to cut the deficit to nine (37-28), but the Titans would trail by double digits the rest of the way. With 12:17 left on the clock, Shane Kieler buried a jumper to put the Pioneers up, 43-29.

Hanson rattled off nine straight UW-Platteville points to increase the advantage. His jumper with 6:36 left made it 52-39. UW-Oshkosh got three late hoops from Wojahn, who registered the Titans’ final points of the contest with 2:54 remaining.

Shaw knocked down a triple just 13 seconds into the game, while Cory Wittwer (Fr. • Fall Creek) answered from deep 35 seconds later. UW-Oshkosh never led by more than two points as Shaw tallied 11 of the Pioneers’ first 14 to mark a 14-13 lead. Greg Schrimpf (So. • Manitowoc) dropped in seven straight points to give the Titans their last cushion at 20-18.

Scoring 23, Hanson topped all players and got 10 points at the charity stripe. Shaw tacked on 17 points, Kieler 11 and Wall 10 for the Pioneers, who committed 12 giveaways on the night. Allen marked game-highs with six assists and three steals while grabbing six boards.

Schrimpf topped his team with 12 points as Wojahn contributed 10. D.J. Marsh (Sr. • Bayside), who led the Titans in scoring each of the last 11 contests, recorded eight points and seven rebounds. John Flanigan (So. • Oshkosh) turned in eight rebounds to lead all players.

UW-Oshkosh, which matched its season low for field goal percentage (32.1), converted 18-of-56 shots while hitting 2-of-16 from downtown (12.5 percent). The Titans sank 9-of-13 free throws (69.2 percent) and turned the ball over nine times.

The Pioneers outrebounded UW-Oshkosh, 30-29, to end the Titans’ streak of 10 straight games with an edge in boards. UW-Platteville finished with 52.5 percent shooting (21-40), including 40 percent accuracy (6-15) behind the arc and 90.5 percent precision on free throws (19-21).

The Titans look to get back on track when they host UW-River Falls on Saturday (Dec. 12) in Kolf Sports Center.

Basketball Games Against UW-Platteville Postponed

Due to the blizzard that has impacted the state, Governor Jim Doyle has ordered all University of Wisconsin campuses to be closed on Wednesday (Dec. 9) for public business.

The result of Governor Doyle's decision has postponed Wednesday's basketball games between UW-Oshkosh and UW-Platteville. The contests have been rescheduled for Thursday (Dec. 10), with the men playing in Platteville and the women playing in Oshkosh. Both games tip off at 7 p.m.

UW-Oshkosh also hosts UW-River Falls in a basketball doubleheader on Saturday (Dec. 12). The women's game begins at 5 p.m. and the men's contest at 7 p.m.

Marsh Named WIAC Player Of The Week

D.J. MarshUW-Oshkosh forward D.J. Marsh (Sr. • Bayside) has been selected the WIAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week for games played Nov. 30-Dec. 6.

Marsh averaged 28 points and 4.5 rebounds per contest as UW-Oshkosh posted wins over UW-Eau Claire on Dec. 2 and Finlandia University (Mich.) on Dec. 5.

Marsh totaled 56 points on 61.5 percent (16-26) shooting from the field and 90.9 percent (20-22) accuracy from the free-throw line. He also compiled nine rebounds, 10 assists, five steals and one blocked shot in 62 minutes of playing time.

In UW-Oshkosh’s 85-57 home win over UW-Eau Claire, Marsh scored 31 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field and 12-of-13 shooting from the free-throw line. He also grabbed four rebounds, dished off five assists and tallied three steals.

In the Titans’ 81-61 road win over Finlandia University, Marsh scored 25 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field and 8-of-9 shooting from the free-throw line. He also collected five rebounds, dished off five assists and counted two steals.

Titans Tame Lions For Second Time In 11 Days

D.J. MarshGreg SchrimpfCory WittwerCory Wittwer (Jr. • Fall Creek) tallied a career-high 22 points as the UW-Oshkosh men’s basketball team made its final 20 free throws in an 81-61 victory over Finlandia University (Mich.) on Saturday (Dec. 5) in Hancock, Mich.

The Titans’ 95.2 percent accuracy (20-21) at the charity stripe was accompanied by 49.1 percent (27-55) shooting from the field and 43.8 percent marksmanship (7-16) behind the three-point arc.

UW-Oshkosh (4-3) also defeated the Lions (2-5) by a 78-68 count on Nov. 25 in Oshkosh.

Wittwer knocked down 7-of-10 shots from the field and all six of his free throws. D.J. Marsh (Sr. • Bayside) led the way with 25 points, five assists and five boards for UW-Oshkosh, which earned a rebounding advantage (37-33) for the 10th straight game. The Titans also got 10 points from Greg Schrimpf (So. • Manitowoc) and a game-high three steals from Paul Wojahn (Fr. • Oshkosh).

Finlandia University trailed 43-36 at halftime and was outscored, 38-25, in the second period. The Lions finished with 36.8 percent shooting (21-57) from the field, 4-of-15 connections (26.7 percent) from long range and 15-of-22 successes (68.2 percent) on their free throws.

Tyler Gordon marked 17 points, five rebounds and two steals to lead Finlandia University, while Anthony Grandberry tacked on nine points and Erik Bresette nine points and five boards. The Lions committed 21 turnovers in the game as the Titans took care of the ball with just 13.

Titans Outshine Blugolds In WIAC Opener

D.J. MarshGreg SchrimpfPaul WojahnUW-Oshkosh shot better than 57 percent from the field in each half as it cruised to an 85-57 men’s basketball win over UW-Eau Claire on Wednesday (Dec. 2) in Kolf Sports Center. The contest was the WIAC opener for both squads.

UW-Oshkosh (3-3/1-0 WIAC) built a 48-32 halftime lead on 16-of-28 shooting (57.1 percent) from the field. In the second half, the Titans posted a 37-25 scoring advantage on 10-of-17 shooting (58.8 percent) from the field. UW-Oshkosh finished the game shooting 57.8 percent (26-45) from the field, including 42.1 percent (8-19) behind the three-point arc.

UW-Oshkosh, which defeated UW-Eau Claire in Kolf Sports Center for the 17th consecutive game, was led by the 31 points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals of D.J. Marsh (Sr. • Bayside). Marsh counted his points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field and 12-of-13 accuracy from the free-throw line.

The Titans also received 12 points from Greg Schrimpf (So. • Manitowoc), nine points from Paul Wojahn (Fr. • Oshkosh) and seven points and eight rebounds from Brian Washington (Fr. • Waukesha).

Draining four of its first five field goal attempts, UW-Oshkosh bolted to an 11-3 lead just 2:58 into play. Wojahn then swished a three-point shot with 13:28 left in the half to put the Titans up 16-7.

UW-Eau Claire (4-2/0-1 WIAC) fought back with a 12-4 scoring spurt, including three-point baskets by Geoff Probst and Nick Bartlett. The game was tied three times in a span of 1:27, with the final one being at 26 with 6:10 remaining in the period. Sam Mageland (Fr. • Appleton) broke that stalemate with a three-point basket, and the Titans led the rest of the way.

UW-Oshkosh ended the first half with a 22-6 scoring run, including 10 points by Marsh, to take a 48-32 lead to intermission. Marsh tallied 20 points in the opening half, including nine on free throws.

In the second half, Schrimpf converted three free throws to give the Titans a 56-35 lead with 16:56 to play. UW-Oshkosh continued to increase its margin, with Marsh finishing off a four-point play to put the Titans ahead 64-39. A three-point shot from Schrimpf put UW-Oshkosh up by 33 points (83-50) with 3:08 remaining.

Amadou Fofana topped UW-Eau Claire in scoring with 15 points. The Blugolds also received 10 points from Probst and eight points, four rebounds and four assists from Marcus Ruh.

UW-Oshkosh compiled a 30-19 rebounding advantage to win that category for the ninth consecutive game. The Titans committed 16 turnovers and the Blugolds 12.

UW-Eau Claire, which never led in the contest, shot 39.5 percent (17-43) from the field and 66.7 percent (20-30) from the free-throw line. The Blugolds shot 37.5 percent (3-8) behind the three-point arc.

UW-Oshkosh made 89.3 percent (25-28) of its free throws.

The Titans replace Saturday's (Dec. 5) bye in the WIAC schedule with a road game at Finlandia University (Mich.).

Marsh Receives D3hoops.com Team Of The Week Award

D.J. MarshThe Internet site D3hoops.com has named UW-Oshkosh forward D.J. Marsh (Sr. • Bayside) to its Men's Basketball Team of the Week for games played Nov. 23-29.

Marsh averaged 28 points and eight rebounds per contest as UW-Oshkosh posted a 1-2 record in contests against Finlandia University (Mich.), University of Puget Sound (Wash.) and St. John’s University (Minn.).

Marsh totaled 84 points on 63.4 percent (26-41) shooting from the field and 90.9 percent (30-33) accuracy from the free-throw line. He also compiled 24 rebounds (11 offensive), eight assists, six steals and four blocked shots in 95 minutes of playing time.

In UW-Oshkosh’s 78-68 win over Finlandia University on Nov. 25, Marsh scored 18 points, grabbed five rebounds, blocked two shots and dished off two assists.

In the Titans’ 90-87 loss to the University of Puget Sound on Nov. 27, Marsh scored a career-high 38 points and tied a career best with 14 rebounds. Marsh, who also blocked two shots and dished off two assists, shot 10-of-18 from the field and 17-of-18 from the free-throw line.

In UW-Oshkosh’s 79-71 loss to St. John’s University on Nov. 28, Marsh tallied 28 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the field and 10-of-12 marksmanship from the free-throw line. He also recorded five rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Also named to the five-member team were guard Steve Djurickovic of Carthage College, guard J.T. Knight of Kenyon College (Ohio), guard Tony Mane of UW-La Crosse and forward Mike Russell of Colby College (Maine).

UW-Oshkosh Announces Basketball Television & Webcast Schedule

A total of nine UW-Oshkosh basketball games will be televised locally on Time Warner Cable (Channel 66) and presented live on the Internet during the 2009-10 season.

Fans can watch the UW-Oshkosh men play UW-Eau Claire at 7 p.m. on Dec. 2, UW-River Falls at 7 p.m. on Dec. 12, UW-Platteville at 7 p.m. on Feb. 3, UW-Superior at 3 p.m. on Feb. 13 and UW-Whitewater at 7 p.m. on Feb. 17.

The UW-Oshkosh women can be seen playing UW-Platteville at 7 p.m. on Dec. 9, UW-River Falls at 5 p.m. on Dec. 12, UW-La Crosse at 7 p.m. on Feb. 10 and UW-Superior at 1 p.m. on Feb. 13.

Johnnies’ Balanced Attack Leads To Win Over Titans

Aaron Burtzel paced the Johnnies (3-2) with a season-high 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Chris Schwartz added 17 points and four steals. St. John’s University also received 15 points from Aaron Barmore and 14 from Andy Burns.

St. John's University led 37-32 at halftime and used a three-point play from Barmore and a three-point basket from Andrew Latzke to go up, 43-32. Schwartz then made a pair of free throws and Latzke another three-point shot to give the Johnnies a 48-37 advantage with 15:50 left.

UW-Oshkosh (2-3) bounced back with 14 straight points as it took a 51-48 lead with 11:13 remaining on the clock. The Titans, ranked 24th in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com, had six different players score points during the run.

Cory Wittwer (Jr. • Fall Creek) buried a three-point shot to give the Titans their final lead at 58-57 with 5:34 to play. Following that basket, St. John’s University got a three-point play and two lay-ups from Burtzel and lay-ups from both Barmore and Burns to go up 68-60 with 1:58 remaining.

St. John's University sealed the victory by making 11 free throws (14 attempts), including six by Barmore, in the final 1:23 of action. The Johnnies shot 85.2 percent (23-27) from the free-throw line, including 81.8 (18-22) in the second half.

UW-Oshkosh got off to a fast start as a pair baskets by D.J. Marsh (Sr. • Bayside) and a three-point basket from Greg Schrimpf (So. • Manitowoc) helped the Titans build an 11-5 lead just 4:42 into play. Five consecutive points by Schwartz then tightened the game before Burns made a lay-up to give the Johnnies a 14-13 lead with 12:03 left in the first half.

The opening period featured five lead changes, with the final one coming on a Schwartz three-point basket that gave St. John's University a 29-27 lead with 3:15 remaining before the break. Schwartz added two more three-point baskets in the last 2:22 to give the Johnnies a five-point advantage at intermission.

UW-Oshkosh received 28 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals from Marsh. Marsh topped the Titans in scoring for the ninth consecutive contest by hitting 9-of-12 shots from the field and 10-of-12 tosses from the free-throw line.

The Titans also acquired 13 points from Schrimpf, 10 points and three steals from Wittwer and five points and six rebounds from Luke Miller (Sr. • Elk Grove Village, Ill.).

UW-Oshkosh shot 44.4 percent (24-54) from the field and 89.5 percent (17-19) from the free-throw line. The Titans made six of their 21 three-point attempts (28.6 percent).

St. John's University shot 53.2 percent (25-47) from the field, including 46.2 (6-13) behind the three-point arc.

The Titans grabbed 28 rebounds and committed 13 turnovers, while the Johnnies collected 22 rebounds and turned the basketball over 10 times.

UW-Oshkosh begins its 16-game WIAC schedule by hosting UW-Eau Claire on Wednesday (Dec. 2) in Kolf Sports Center.

Loggers Rally To Chop Down Titans

UW-Oshkosh (2-2) owned a 65-51 lead with 14:55 to play, but the University of Puget Sound (2-3) constructed a 33-13 scoring run to take an 84-78 advantage with 3:49 left. Nadav Heyman tallied eight of his 20 points during the Loggers' game-changing scoring spree, while Austin Boyce and Kaleb Smith both marked seven. Boyce finished the contest with 17 points and Shelton 16.

UW-Oshkosh pulled to within one point three times during the final 2:16 of action, with the latest being an 88-87 deficit with 42 seconds left. Heyman clinched the victory for the Loggers by sinking a jump shot from 15 feet with 13 seconds left. The Titans missed two shots in the final three seconds, a three-point attempt by Andy Kretsch (Jr. • Manitowoc) and a lay-up by D.J. Marsh (Sr. • Bayside).

Marsh was spectacular in the loss as he scored a career-best 38 points on 10-of-18 shooting from the field and 17-of-18 accuracy from the free-throw line. Marsh also grabbed 14 rebounds to tie a career best, blocked two shots and dished off two assists. Kretsch added 11 points, Cory Wittwer (Jr. • Fall Creek) 10 and Jade Royston (Fr. • Wisconsin Dells) and Brian Washington (Fr. • Waukesha) seven each for the Titans. UW-Oshkosh also received four points and eight rebounds from Luke Miller (Sr. • Elk Grove Village, Ill.).

The University of Puget Sound, a first-time opponent of UW-Oshkosh, took an early 10-9 lead on a pair of free throws by Shelton at the 15:27 mark of the opening period. UW-Oshkosh then scored 20 of the next 29 points, including seven by Marsh, to take a 29-19 advantage with 8:38 left in the frame.

UW-Oshkosh led by 10-plus points the final 7:49 of the first half, with its largest advantage being a 53-38 score with 40 seconds remaining. The Titans shot 59.3 percent (16-27) from the field in the opening half, including 71.4 percent (5-7) behind the three-point line. The teams paraded to the free-throw line 41 times in the first half, with UW-Oshkosh sinking 16-of-18 shots (84.2 percent) and the University of Puget Sound draining 16-of-22 attempts (72.7 percent).

UW-Oshkosh extended its 53-42 halftime lead to 57-44 on a jump shot by Marsh with 18:42 left in the second half. The teams swapped points during the next five minutes as the Titans built a 65-51 advantage with 14:55 remaining. The second half featured the University of Puget Sound shooting 57.1 percent (16-28) from the field and UW-Oshkosh 29.6 (8-27). After missing all seven of their three-point shots in the first half, the Loggers made five of their seven long-range attempts (71.4 percent) in the second.

UW-Oshkosh finished the game shooting 44.4 percent (24-54) from the field and 37.5 percent (6-16) behind the three-point arc. The Titans shot just 29.6 percent (8-27) from the field in the second half. UW-Oshkosh made 33 of its 38 free throws for 86.8 percent accuracy.

The University of Puget Sound wound up shooting 49,2 percent (29-59) from the field, 35.7 percent (5-14) behind the three-point line and 81.8 percent (27-33) from the free-throw stripe.

UW-Oshkosh won the rebounding battle, 38-30, but lost the turnover count, 14-20.

The University of Puget Sound entered the game ranked 18th in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com and UW-Oshkosh 24th.

Titans Hunt Down Lions On Thanksgiving Eve

The win gave the Titans a victory in their home opener for the 24th time in 26 years.

Cory Wittwer (Jr. • Fall Creek) got the scoring started with the Titans’ first five points. After a Greg Schrimpf (So. • Manitowoc) three-point basket, D.J. Marsh (Sr. • Bayside) tallied a jumper, a three-pointer and two free throws to put UW-Oshkosh ahead, 17-7, just 5:04 into play.

Midway through the first half, UW-Oshkosh (2-1) scored seven points in a span of 32 seconds to increase its lead to 33-10. That spurt featured five more points from Wittwer. Jade Royston (Fr. • Wisconsin Dells) buried a three-point shot of his own to put the Titans up 38-13 with 8:30 on the clock.

The Titans’ next five baskets came from five different players as their hot shooting continued. Finlandia University (2-3) made it a 44-26 contest on Kyle Smith’s three-pointer, but Wittwer buried a deep jumper just before the break to give UW-Oshkosh a 51-28 halftime lead.

Consecutive lay-ups from Marsh put UW-Oshkosh ahead, 59-30, early in the second half. The Lions came back with a 14-3 scoring streak, including a long-distance bucket by Anthony Grandberry, to cut their deficit to 62-34 with 7:34 remaining.

Jonathan Moore swished three attempts behind the arc in 71 seconds to trim the difference to 68-53. His sixth and final three-point basket got Finlandia University to 76-66 with 1:06 to play.

Marsh made it three straight games as the Titans’ top scorer by marking 18 points. He also grabbed five rebounds and blocked two shots. UW-Oshkosh also received 13 points and six rebounds from Wittwer, 11 points and three steals from Schrimpf and seven points and six rebounds from Brian Washington (Fr. • Waukesha). Paul Wojahn (Fr. • Oshkosh) dished out five assists to pace the Titans, who posted a 40-31 rebounding edge.

The Lions had three players with at least 11 points, led by Moore’s 22. Grandberry tacked on 12 points and Tyler Gordon 11 points and six rebounds. Finlandia University equaled the Titans’ total with 14 turnovers in the contest.

UW-Oshkosh shot 46.4 percent (26-56) from the field despite missing 10 straight attempts between the 16:37 and 8:11 marks of the second half. The Titans converted 33.3 percent (7-21) of their three-point shots and 70.4 percent (19-27) of their free throws.

Finlandia University, welcomes UW-Oshkosh for a rematch on Dec. 5 in Hancock, Mich., shot 42.4 percent (25-59) from the field, 39.1 percent (9-23) behind the three-point line and 69.2 percent (9-13) from the free-throw stripe.

Titans Outduel Vikings From Start To Finish

Wittwer, who finished with 18 points, buried a long-range jumper right after the Titans’ (1-1) lead shrunk to 45-44 with 8:16 remaining. UW-Oshkosh then rattled off seven unanswered points, including back-to-back lay-ups from Paul Wojahn (Fr. • Oshkosh), to go ahead, 56-46, with 1:41 on the clock.

The Titans, who entered the game ranked 24th in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com, got a D.J. Marsh (Sr. • Bayside) lay-up 21 seconds into play and never looked back. Triples by Andy Kretsch (Jr. • Manitowoc) and Greg Schrimpf (So. • Manitowoc) extended UW-Oshkosh’s advantage to 12-4 with 10:25 left in the opening period.

Lawrence University (1-1) came back with eight of the next 10 points, including a three-point play from Jamie DeMatthew and a jumper by John Dekker to make it a two-point margin (14-12) at the 8:12 mark.

Wittwer drilled two attempts from beyond the arc during a 90-second span late in the half to put the Titans up, 25-18. Another three-point bucket from Schrimpf with 1:44 left in the half allowed UW-Oshkosh to take a 32-25 lead to intermission.

A pair lay-ups and a tip-in by Marsh put his team ahead, 43-34, before the Vikings made their final run. DeMatthew capped their 10-2 scoring spurt with four free throws to cut Lawrence University’s deficit to 45-44.

Marsh, who topped all players with 19 points and 10 rebounds, converted seven free throws late to seal the game. He added four steals for UW-Oshkosh, which shot 37 percent from the field (22-60), 38 percent from three-point land (6-16) and 16-of-26 at the charity stripe (62 percent).

Tyler Crisman paced the Vikings with 14 points, while DeMatthew tallied 12 points, Dekker 10 points and Erik Borresen eight rebounds. Lawrence University also struggled putting the ball in the hoop, finishing with 33 percent shooting (17-51), 29 percent long-range accuracy (6-21) and 60 percent marksmanship (15-25) at the free-throw line.

UW-Oshkosh turned the ball over just eight times as it defeated Lawrence University for the second straight meeting. The Titans also posted a 47-33 rebounding edge over the Vikings, who committed 12 giveaways in the game.

UW-Oshkosh is off until it hosts Finlandia University (Mich.) on Wednesday (Nov. 25).

St. Norbert College, which is favored to win this year's Midwest Conference title, reeled in nine offensive rebounds among its overall total of 32. The Titans posted 15 offensive rebounds, but the Green Knights made up for it by blocking seven shots.
