LeRoy Competes At NCAA Championship
UW-Oshkosh's
John LeRoy (Sr. Oshkosh) closed out his cross
country career by finishing 129th at the NCAA Division
III Championship held Saturday (Nov. 20) at the Whitetail
Golf Course in Colfax.
LeRoy, UW-Oshkosh's lone
representative at the national meet, completed the
8,000-meter course in a time of 26:20. It was the fourth
appearance at the NCAA Division III Championship for
LeRoy, who also finished 53rd in 2003, 55th in 2001 and
72nd in 2000.
Josh Moen of Wartburg
College (Iowa) captured the individual title with a time
of 24:28, while Neal Holtschulte of Williams College
(Mass.) finished second in 24:41, Mike Sawicki of
Otterbein College (Ohio) third in 24:43, Ted Turner of
State University of New York-Geneseo fourth in 24:44 and
Crosby Freeman of Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (Calif.) fifth
in 24:48. A total of 215 runners finished the race.
Calvin College (Mich.),
placing all five of its scorers in the top 51 individual
finishes, counted 107 points to successfully defend its
team championship. North Central College (Ill.) finished
second with 137 points, while UW-La Crosse placed third
with 148, Haverford College (Pa.) fourth with 196 and
Willamette University (Ore.) fifth with 209. A total of
24 teams participated in the meet.
LeRoy First,
Titans Ninth At NCAA Midwest Regional
John LeRoy (Sr.
Oshkosh) ran to the individual title as the
UW-Oshkosh men's cross country team finished ninth at the
NCAA Division III Midwest Regional held Saturday (Nov.
13) at Credit Island Park in Davenport, Iowa.
UW-La
Crosse captured the team championship with 73 points,
while North Central College (Ill.) finished second with
99, the University of Chicago (Ill.) third with 128,
UW-Stevens Point fourth with 151 and UW-Platteville fifth
with 176. All five teams will represent the Midwest
Region at next Saturday's (Nov. 20) NCAA Division III
Championship in Colfax.
Completing
the list of teams finishing in the top 10 at the Midwest
Regional were sixth-place Elmhurst College (Ill.) with
192 points, seventh-place Augustana College (Ill.) with
198, eighth-place Washington University (Mo.) with 211,
ninth-place and two-time defending champion UW-Oshkosh
with 214 and 10th-place Greenville College (Ill.) with
251. A total of 30 teams competed in the meet, with
UW-Oshkosh attempting to emerge as qualifier for the NCAA
Division III Championship for the 16th time in 17 years.
LeRoy advances to
the NCAA Division III Championship after winning the Midwest Regional
with an 8,000-meter time of 24:23. Mark LaLonde of UW-Stevens Point finished
second with a time of 24:25 and Zach Barr of Monmouth College (Ill.) third
in 24:28. In addition to LeRoy and Barr, sixth-place Matt Heintz of Elmhurst
College, seventh-place Gary Garcia of UW-Whitewater, ninth-place Greg
Reind of Washington University and 12th-place Dave Billings of Ripon College
also qualified as individual competitors for the NCAA Division III Championship.
UW-Oshkosh
had six other runners at the Midwest Regional, including
Willy Kaul (Fr. Menomonee Falls) who placed 20th
with a time of 24:52 to rank as the Titans' second
finisher. UW-Oshkosh also had Brandon Lesky (Jr.
Cudahy) finish 55th in 25:28, Nate Boehlke (So.
Sugar Camp) 65th in 25:40, Patrick O'Brien (Fr.
Appleton) 75th in 25:46, Mike Wehrley (Sr. Verona)
79th in 25:49 and Ryan Richardson (So. Winnebago,
Ill.) 109th in 26:18. A total of 243 runners finished the
race.
Titans To
Participate At NCAA Regional
The UW-Oshkosh men's cross country
team looks to extend its season by one more week when it competes at the NCAA
Division III Midwest Regional on Saturday (Nov. 13) at Credit Island Park in Davenport,
Iowa.
Augustana College (Ill.) is serving as the host
institution for an event that is expected to draw
about 30 teams from the states of Illinois,
Missouri and Wisconsin. The top five squads from
the Midwest Regional will advance to the NCAA
Division III Championship on Nov. 20 in Colfax.
Teams expected to battle for a finish in the top five are Augustana College, Elmhurst
College (Ill.), North Central College (Ill.), University of Chicago (Ill.), UW-La
Crosse, two-time defending champion UW-Oshkosh, UW-Platteville, UW-Stevens Point
and Washington University (Mo.). All nine teams were ranked in the top 25 of the
latest NCAA Division III poll conducted by the Men's Intercollegiate Cross Country
Coaches Association.
Leading candidates for the individual title are Gary Garcia of UW-Whitewater,
John LeRoy (Sr. • Oshkosh) of UW-Oshkosh, Josh Martsolf of Greenville College
(Ill.) and Pat Rizzo of North Central College. |
Titans Finish
Fourth At WIAC Championship
Led by John LeRoy's
(Sr. Oshkosh) second-place individual finish,
UW-Oshkosh took fourth place out of nine teams at the
WIAC Men's Cross Country Championship held Saturday (Oct.
30) in River Falls.
UW-La
Crosse, with all five of its scorers in the top-10
individual finishes, tallied 36 points to claim its 26th
WIAC title in school history. UW-Platteville finished
second with 82 points, while UW-Stevens Point placed
third with 84, two-time defending champion UW-Oshkosh
fourth with 85, UW-Eau Claire fifth with 119,
UW-Whitewater sixth with 186, UW-River Falls seventh with
196, UW-Stout eighth with 199 and UW-Superior ninth with
234. UW-La Crosse's margin of victory was the largest
since 1985.
UW-Whitewater's
Gary Garcia captured the individual title by completing
the 8,000-meter course in a time of 25:14. LeRoy finished
second in 25:19, while UW-Platteville's Tyler Sigl placed
third in 25:28, UW-Stevens Point's Mark LaLonde fourth in
25:33 and UW-La Crosse's Nate Hoffman fifth in 25:42.
UW-Oshkosh's team scoring
was completed by the 13th-place time of 26:02 by Willy
Kaul (Fr. Menomonee Falls), the 24th-place time of
26:39 by Patrick O'Brien (Fr. Appleton), the
28th-place time of 26:53 by Brandon Lesky (Jr.
Cudahy) and the 29th-place time of 26:53 by Nate Boehlke
(So. Sugar Camp).
The Titans also had Ryan
Richardson (So. Winnebago, Ill.) finish 38th in
27:20, Mike Wehrley (Sr. Verona) 43rd in 27:27,
Mark Johnson (So. Hartland) 48th in 27:38, Geoff
Gundlach (Fr. Middleton) 54th in 27:49, Brian
Kelley (So. Winnebago, Ill.) 73rd in 28:22, Caleb
Roesler (Fr. New Lisbon) 84th in 28:58 and Kyle
Peterson (Fr. Neenah) 88th in 29:18.
UW-La Crosse's Don Fritsch
was voted WIAC Coach of the Year by league coaches.
Titans To Run At
WIAC Championship
The UW-La Crosse men and the UW-Stevens
Point women are favored to capture team titles at the WIAC Cross Country Championships
on Saturday (Oct. 30) in River Falls. The men's 8,000-meter race starts at 11
a.m. on the UW-River Falls campus, while the women's 6,000-meter race begins at
noon.
Expected to provide UW-La Crosse with its stiffest competition in the men's division
are UW-Stevens Point and two-time defending champion UW-Oshkosh. UW-La Crosse
enters the meet as the third-ranked team in the NCAA Division III by the Men's
Intercollegiate Cross Country Coaches Association, while UW-Stevens Point was
voted sixth and UW-Oshkosh 18th.
Individually, the top contenders are UW-La Crosse's Andy Grupa, UW-Oshkosh's John
LeRoy (Sr. • Oshkosh), UW-Stevens Point's Mark LaLonde and UW-Whitewater's
Gary Garcia.
Defending champion UW-Stevens Point will receive its strongest challenge in the
women's division from UW-La Crosse and UW-Oshkosh. UW-Stevens Point is ranked
second in the NCAA Division III by the Women's Intercollegiate Cross Country Coaches
Association, while UW-Oshkosh is fourth and UW-La Crosse seventh.
UW-Oshkosh's Liz Woodworth (Sr. • Marinette), who won last year's race by
61 seconds, is expected to repeat as individual champion. |

Against Pointers
 The UW-Oshkosh men's cross country
team ran against UW-Stevens Point in a
non-scoring meet held Friday (Oct. 22) at the
Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne.
Brad Theyerl, running
unattached, took individual honors by completing
the 8,000-meter course in a time of 26:03.
UW-Stevens Point owned the next four finishers as
Chris Peterson placed second in 26:52, Greg
Sullivan third in 27:01, Justin Andrews fourth in
27:05 and Cory Baumann fifth in 27:23.
UW-Oshkosh, which rested several of its top runners,
was led by Caleb Roesler's (Fr. • New Lisbon) sixth-place time of 27:29
and Kyle Peterson's (Fr. • Neenah) eighth-place effort of 27:38.
The Titans also had Geoff Gundlach (Fr. •
Middleton) finish 10th in 27:48, Derrick Fameree (Fr. • Algoma)
14th in 28:31, Alan Smith (Fr. • Rhinelander) 15th in 28:46
and Scott Michel (Fr. • Waupaca) 22nd in 31:35.

Fifth At UW-Oshkosh Hammer Strength Invitational
 John LeRoy (Sr. • Oshkosh) finished
eighth and Willy Kaul (Fr. • Menomonee Falls) 14th in the individual competition
to help the UW-Oshkosh men's cross country team to a fifth-place standing at the
UW-Oshkosh Hammer Strength Invitational held Saturday (Oct. 16) at the Lake Breeze
Golf Course in Winneconne.
Calvin College (Mich.), the
top-ranked team in the NCAA Division III by the
Men's Intercollegiate Cross Country Coaches
Association, put five runners in the top 10
individual finishes to win the meet with 30
points. 15th-ranked Carleton College (Minn.) was
second with 80 points and 19th-ranked Augustana
College (Ill.) third with 90.
The eight-team
event also had fourth-ranked UW-Stevens Point
finish fourth with 95 points, 14th-ranked
UW-Oshkosh fifth with 122, Elmhurst College
(Ill.) sixth with 128, Carthage College seventh
with 172 and NCAA Division I UW-Green Bay eighth
with 203.
Former UW-Oshkosh
standout Matt Thull took the individual title
after completing the 8,000-meter course in a time
of 24:48. UW-Stevens Point's Mark LaLonde
finished second in 24:50 and Carleton College's
Dan Bucy third in 24:51.
LeRoy led UW-Oshkosh by placing eighth with a time
of 25:06, while Kaul finished 14th in 25:26. UW-Oshkosh's scoring was completed
by the 41st-place time of 26:13 by Brandon Lesky (Jr. • Cudahy), the 42nd-place
time of 26:15 by Patrick O'Brien (Fr. • Appleton) and the 44th-place time
of 26:18 by Nate Boehlke (So. • Sugar Camp).
The Titans also had three other runners finish
in the top 65 as Ryan Richardson (So. • Winnebago, Ill.) placed 46th in
26:22, Mark Johnson (So. • Hartland) 51st in 26:27 and Kirk DeWindt (Jr.
• Green Bay) 65th in 26:44. A total of 146 runners completed the race. |
Titans To Host
UW-Oshkosh Invitational
Five of the top 19 men's and two
of the top four women's cross country teams in the NCAA Division III will run
at Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne on Saturday as UW-Oshkosh hosts its only
invitational of the 2004 season.
The 8,000-meter men's race, which starts at 10:45
a.m., features top-ranked Calvin College (Mich.),
fourth-ranked UW-Stevens Point, 14th-ranked
UW-Oshkosh, 15th-ranked Carleton College (Minn.)
and 19th-ranked Augustana College (Ill.).
Carthage College, Elmhurst College (Ill.) and
NCAA Division I UW-Green Bay will also compete in
the meet.
The women's 5,000-meter race, which begins at 11:30 a.m., features second-ranked
UW-Stevens Point and fourth-ranked UW-Oshkosh. Calvin College, North Central College
and NCAA Division I UW-Green Bay will also participate in the event.
Admission/Parking to the meet is $5 per
automobile. |
Wehrley, Titans
Capture Carthage College Invitational Titles
 Mike Wehrley (Sr. • Verona) ran
to the individual title to lead the UW-Oshkosh men's cross country team to a first-place
finish at the Carthage College Invitational held Saturday (Oct. 9) in Kenosha.
UW-Oshkosh took the team
championship with 22 points, while Carthage
College finished second with 49 points, Illinois
Tech third with 76, Northland College fourth with
105 and Edgewood College fifth with 130.
UW-Oshkosh had all five of its scorers in the top
nine individual finishes, including Wehrley who completed the 8,000-meter course
in a winning time of 27:00. The Titans also had Ryan Richardson (So. • Winnebago,
Ill.) finish fourth in 27:49, Mark Johnson (So. • Hartland) fifth in 27:58,
Geoff Gundlach (Fr. • Middleton) seventh in 28:15 and Alex Sleaper (Fr.
• Hartland) ninth in 28:37.
Other UW-Oshkosh runners in the meet were Alan
Smith (Fr. • Rhinelander), who finished 11th in 28:51, Derrick Fameree (Fr.
• Algoma), who finished 17th in 29:22, Caleb Roesler (Fr. • New Lisbon),
who finished 18th in 29:24, Kyle Peterson (Fr. • Neenah), who finished 20th
in 29:28, and Brian Kelley (So. • Winnebago, Ill.), who finished 21st in

10th At Notre Dame Invitational
 The UW-Oshkosh men's cross country
team ran to a 10th-place finish in the Gold
Division of the Notre Dame Invitational held
Friday (Oct. 1) at the Burke Memorial Golf Course
in South Bend, Ind.
Host University of Notre Dame
finished first in its own 26-team event with 85
points, while the University of Windsor (Ontario,
Canada) placed second with 93 points, Calvin
College (Mich.) third with 96, North Central
College (Ill.) fourth with 96 and Duquesne
University (Pa.) fifth with 133. UW-Oshkosh
finished 10th with 350 points.
Willy Kaul (Fr.
Menomonee Falls) was the top UW-Oshkosh
finisher. Kaul completed the 8,000-meter course
in a time of 25:29 to finish 29th. He was the
third freshman to finish the race.
UW-Oshkosh had its
team scoring completed by the 62nd-place time of
25:58 by Patrick O'Brien (Fr. Appleton),
75th-place time of 26:07 by Nate Boehlke (So.
Sugar Camp), 84th-place time of 26:15 of
John LeRoy (Sr. Oshkosh) and 105th-place
time of 26:38 of Brandon Lesky (Jr.
Cudahy).
The Titans also
had Mike Wehrley (Sr. Verona) finish 112th
in 26:49, Ryan Richardson (So. Winnebago,
Ill.) 124th in 27:03, Brian Kelley (So.
Winnebago, Ill.) 157th in 27:39 and Mark Johnson
(So. Hartland) 167th in 27:50. A total of
216 runners finished the race.
Cristiano Maurico of the University
of Windsor took the individual title with a time of 24:30, while
Mark LaLonde of UW-Stevens Point finished second in 24:41 and Matt
Tyrrell of Idaho State University third in 24:48. |

Second In Junior Varsity Division Of UW-Eau Claire Invitational
 With nine of their teammates
competing at the Notre Dame Invitational earlier
in the day, the remaining members of the
UW-Oshkosh men's cross country team finished
second in the Junior Varsity Division of the
UW-Eau Claire Invitational held Friday (Oct. 1)
at the White Tail Golf Course in Colfax.
UW-La Crosse, which swept
the top six individual finishes, claimed the team
title with a perfect score of 15 points.
UW-Oshkosh finished second in the 12-team meet
with 84 points, while St. Olaf College (Minn.)
finished third with 97 points, Macalester College
(Minn.) fourth with 98 and UW-River Falls fifth
with 159.
UW-Oshkosh had
three runners finish in the top 14 individual
listings as Kyle Peterson (Fr. Neenah)
placed 11th with a time of 28:09, Geoff Gundlach
(Fr. Middleton) 13th in 28:13 and Alex
Sleaper (Fr. Hartland) 14th in 28:14.
Kevin Oelstrom of UW-La Crosse won the
8,000-meter race with a time of 26:55.
The Titans also
had Caleb Roesler (Fr. New Lisbon) finish
21st in 28:37, Derrick Fameree (Fr.
Algoma) 25th in 28:46, Alan Smith (Fr.
Rhinelander) 38th in 29:06 and Scott Michel (Fr.

Freshmen Lead
Titans In Season Opener
 Five freshmen accounted for all of
the scoring as the UW-Oshkosh men's cross country
team finished 17th at the Midwest Collegiate
Championship held Saturday (Sept. 18) in Kenosha.
The event opened the 2004 season for the Titans.
NCAA Division I Iowa State
University finished first in the team rankings
with 41 points, while NCAA Division III North
Central College (Ill.) placed second with 108
points and NCAA Division II Edinboro University
(Pa.) third with 111. UW-Oshkosh finished 17th in
the 29-team event with 569 points.
Alex Sleaper (Fr. • Hartland) led UW-Oshkosh
by completing the 8,000-meter course in a 151st-place time of 28:36. The Titans
also had Geoff Gundlach (Fr. • Middleton) finish 156th in 28:44, Caleb Roesler
(Fr. • New Lisbon) 186th in 29:14, Alan Smith (Fr. • Rhinelander)
227th in 30:05 and Derrick Fameree (Fr. • Algoma) 229th in 30:06 to complete
their scoring.
UW-Oshkosh had two other competitors in the race,
Kyle Peterson (Fr. • Neenah), who finished 241st in 30:24, and Scott Michel
(Fr. • Waupaca), who placed 314th in 33:33. Grant Shadden of Iowa State
University captured the meet's individual title with a time of 24:53. A total
