Zupanc Finishes 2,212th In Boston Marathon
UW-Oshkosh head men's cross country and head men's
track and field coach John Zupanc finished 2,212th out of nearly
23,000 runners in the 111th Boston Marathon held Monday (April 16)
in Boston, Mass.
Zupanc, 54, completed the 26-mile,
385-yard course in a time of 3:12.37. He ranked 77th in the 50-59
age group and 2,053rd among the nearly 13,000 male competitors.
It was the 19th Boston Marathon appearance for Zupanc.
Robert Cheruiyot won the Boston Marathon for the third time, defending
his title in the remnants of a soaking nor'easter to bring Kenya
its 15th victory in 17 years. Cheruiyot, who also won the race in
2003, set the course record last year but fought the wind and rain
to finish in a slower time of 2:14.13.
Russia's Lidiya Grigoryeva captured
the women's crown with a time of 2:29.18.
The Boston
Marathon is the world's oldest annual marathon and ranks as one
of the world's most prestigious road racing events. The Boston Marathon
has distinguished itself as the pinnacle event within the sport
of road racing by virtue of its traditions, longevity and method
of gaining entry into the race (via qualification). |
Titans Finish Ninth At NCAA Championship

Willy Kaul (Jr. Menomonee Falls) finished
fourth out of 279 runners to lead UW-Oshkosh to a ninth-place
listing at the NCAA Division III Men's Cross Country Championship
held Saturday (Nov. 18) at Voice of America Park in West Chester,
Ohio.
Calvin College
(Mich.) placed all five of its scorers in the top 17 individual
finishes to win the 32-team meet with 37 points. New York University
finished second with 92 points, while Allegheny College (Pa.)
ranked third with 212, State University of New York-Cortland
fourth with 213 and St. John's University (Minn.) fifth with
234.
Polishing off the
top 10 teams were sixth-place Luther College (Iowa) with 243
points, seventh-place Williams College (Mass.) with 278, eighth-place
The College of New Jersey with 301, ninth-place UW-Oshkosh with
310 and 10th-place Haverford College (Pa.) with 314. UW-Oshkosh
received a request to participate in this year's NCAA Division
III Championship after placing fourth at the NCAA Division III
Midwest Regional held Nov. 11 in Davenport, Iowa.
Kaul traveled the
rain-soaked 8,000-meter course in a time of 26:50 to secure
fourth place and earn All-America accolades. It was Kaul's second
appearance at the NCAA Division III Championship, following
a 207th-place finish a year ago. Kaul's 2006 finish was the
third-best in UW-Oshkosh history. He also becomes the 35th NCAA
Division III All-American in school annals.
UW-Oshkosh also
received scoring from Andrew McGuire's (So. Wisconsin
Rapids) 57th-place time of 28:05, Brian Kelley's (Sr.
Winnebago, Ill.) 94th-place time of 28:28, Geoff Gundlach's
(Jr. Middleton) 126th-place time of 28:45 and Ryan Richardson's
(Sr. Winnebago, Ill.) 127th-place time of 28:46. Kelley
placed 111th at last year's NCAA Division III Championship.
Other UW-Oshkosh
participants at this year's NCAA Division III Championship were
Brandon Lesky (Sr. Cudahy) and Derrick Fameree (So.
Algoma). Lesky placed 107th with a time of 29:14, while Fameree
finished 241st in 30:14.
Widener University's
(Pa.) Macharia Yout, who finished second in 2003 and 2005, won
the individual title with a time of 26:31. Tim Finnegan of Calvin
College placed second in 26:41, while Julian Boggs of Colorado
College finished third in 26:44 and Jed Christiansen of Calvin
College fifth in 26:52.
UW-Oshkosh was making its 17th
NCAA Division III Championship appearance in the last 20 years
and 18th overall. The Titans finished first in the country in
1988, 1989, 1990 and 2002 and third in 1987, 1991 and 2000.

Titans To Make 18th NCAA Championship Appearance
The UW-Oshkosh men’s
cross country team has received an invitation to participate in
Saturday’s (Nov. 18) NCAA Division III Men’s Cross County
Championship at Voice of America Park in West Chester, Ohio.
UW-Oshkosh earned its 18th selection to the NCAA Division III Championship
after finishing fourth at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional
held Nov. 11 in Davenport, Iowa. UW-Oshkosh captured NCAA Division
III titles in 1988, 1989, 1990 and 2002, while placing third in
1987, 1991 and 2000. The Titans finished 11th at the NCAA Division
III Championship a year ago.
In order to be eligible to participate in this year’s championship,
teams and individuals must qualify in their respective NCAA Division
III regions.
Thirty-two teams were selected on Sunday (Nov. 12) to take part
in the championship. The top two, seven-person teams automatically
qualified from each of the eight regions, for a total of 16 teams.
Sixteen additional teams, including UW-Oshkosh, were selected at-large.
Fifty-six individuals, the first seven athletes from each region
who are not a part of a qualifying team, were also selected to participate
in the meet.
The Midwest Region will be represented in the team category at this
year’s NCAA Division III Championship by automatic qualifiers
North Central College (Ill.) and UW-La Crosse and at-large selections
UW-Oshkosh, UW-Platteville and Washington University (Mo.). UW-La
Crosse is the defending NCAA Division III champion.
Running for UW-Oshkosh will be Derrick
Fameree (So. • Algoma), Geoff Gundlach (Jr. Middleton),
Willy Kaul (Jr. • Menomonee Falls), Brian Kelley (Sr. •
Winnebago, Ill.), Brandon Lesky (Sr. • Cudahy), Andrew McGuire
(So. Wisconsin Rapids) and Ryan Richardson (Sr. Winnebago,
Ill.). Kelley placed 111th and Kaul 207th at last year's NCAA Division
III Championship.
The Midwest Region will have additional
representation at this year’s NCAA Division III Championship
from Emil Bojanov and Brian Hague of the University of Chicago (Ill.),
Brian Butzler of UW-Whitewater, Drew Hatzold and Mike Ptack of Elmhurst
College (Ill.), Micah Lorenzen of Concordia University (Wis.) and
Brandon Mull of Wheaton College (Ill.).

Titans Place Fourth At NCAA Midwest Regional

Paced by the second-place individual effort of Willy
Kaul (Jr. • Menomonee Falls), the UW-Oshkosh men's cross
country team finished fourth at the NCAA Division III Midwest
Regional held Saturday (Nov. 11) at the Credit Island Golf Course
in Davenport, Iowa.
UW-La Crosse, ranked second in
the NCAA Division III, placed all five of its scorers in the
top 22 individual finishes to win the 37-team meet with 65 points.
Eighth-ranked North Central College (Ill.) finished second with
107 points to join UW-La Crosse as an automatic qualifier for
the NCAA Division III Championship that will be held Nov. 18
at Voice of America Park in West Chester, Ohio.
Remaining eligible for one of 16
at-large selections to the 32-team NCAA Division III Championship
were 11th-ranked UW-Platteville, fifth-ranked UW-Oshkosh and
26th-ranked Washington University (Mo.). UW-Platteville placed
third at the Midwest Regional with 112 points, while UW-Oshkosh
finished fourth with 126 and Washington University fifth with
156. The complete list of team and individual qualifiers for
the NCAA Division III Championship will be announced on Sunday
(Nov. 12).
Rounding out the top 10 teams at
the Midwest Regional were sixth-place Wheaton College (Ill.)
with 197 points, seventh-place Elmhurst College (Ill.) with
210, eighth-place UW-Stevens Point with 218, ninth-place University
of Chicago (Ill.) with 245 and 10th-place Augustana College
(Ill.) with 255.
Kaul led UW-Oshkosh by completing
the 8,000-meter course in a second-place time of 24:47. UW-Platteville's
Tyler Sigl posted a time of 24:38 to capture the Midwest Regional
crown for the second consecutive year. UW-Whitewater's Brian
Butzler finished third with a time of 24:56, while UW-La Crosse's
Kevin Oelstrom placed fourth in 24:57 and Elmhurst College's
Mike Ptack fifth in 24:58. A total of 264 runners finished the
race.
In addition to Kaul, UW-Oshkosh
also received scoring from Brian Kelley's (Sr. • Winnebago,
Ill.) 11th-place time of 25:09, Andrew McGuire's (So. •
Wisconsin Rapids) 31st-place time of 25:37, Ryan Richardson's
(Sr. • Winnebago, Ill.) 32nd-place time of 25:37 and Geoff
Gundlach's (Jr. • Middleton) 50th-place time of 25:58.
Other UW-Oshkosh competitors at
the Midwest Regional were Derrick Fameree (So. • Algoma),
who finished 65th in 26:09, and Brandon Lesky (Sr. • Cudahy),
who placed 78th in 26:21.
UW-Oshkosh is looking to make its

Titans Finish Second At WIAC Championship

The UW-Oshkosh men's cross country team had three
of the top 10 individual efforts and finished second at the
WIAC Championship held Saturday (Oct. 28) at the Maple Grove
Golf Course in West Salem.
UW-La Crosse scored 35 points to capture in its third
straight WIAC title and sixth in the past nine years. It was
the 28th league championship for the Eagles.
UW-Oshkosh tallied 58 points to
finish second for the second consecutive year. The Titans have
ranked in the top three places at the WIAC Championship 16 times
in the past 20 years, including first-place listings in 1989,
1990, 1992, 1995, 2000, 2002 and 2003.
UW-Platteville finished third in
the nine-team meet with 76 points, while UW-Stevens Point placed
fourth with 90, UW-Whitewater fifth with 126, UW-Eau Claire
sixth with 180, UW-River Falls seventh with 194, UW-Stout eighth
with 248 and UW-Superior ninth with 256.
UW-Oshkosh was led by Willy Kaul's
(Jr. Menomonee Falls) second-place finish. Kaul, who
finished 36th in last year's meet, completed the 8,000-meter
course in a time of 25:17. The Titans also had Brian Kelley
(Sr. Winnebago, Ill.) place ninth and Andrew McGuire
(So. Wisconsin Rapids) 10th in times of 25:58 each. Kelley
finished 37th and McGuire 40th at the meet a year ago.
UW-Platteville's Tyler Sigl ran
to a time of 25:09 to claim the individual title for the second
consecutive year. UW-Whitewater's Brian Butzler finished third
among the 100 runners with a time of 25:22, while UW-La Crosse's
Kevin Oelstrom and Cory Hayden placed fourth and fifth with
times of 25:30 and 25:33, respectively.
UW-Oshkosh's team scoring concluded
with Ryan Richardson's (Sr. Winnebago, Ill.) 19th-place
time of 26:19 and Geoff Gundlach's (Jr. Middleton) 22nd-place
time of 26:23.
The Titans also had Derrick Fameree
(So. Algoma) finish 25th in 26:29, Brandon Lesky (Sr.
Cudahy) 28th in 26:37, Nick Sydow (So. Marshfield)

received All-WIAC first team recognition, while competitors
placing eighth through 14th earned All-WIAC second team accolades.
UW-La Crosse's Don Fritsch was
named WIAC Coach of the Year, while the Eagles' Oelstrom was
named the winner of the WIAC's Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete Award.

11 by competing at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional in

Haury Leads Titans At UW-Oshkosh Open
 Jacob Haury (Fr. • Milwaukee) finished 13th
to lead UW-Oshkosh in a non-scoring men's cross country meet that
the Titans hosted Friday (Oct. 20) at the Lake Breeze Golf Course
in Winneconne.
The event included athletes from Cardinal Stritch
University, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Platteville and UW-Stevens Point.
Haury paced UW-Oshkosh by completing the 8,000-meter
course with a 13th-place time of 27:04. UW-Stevens Point's Greg
Haak won the race with a time of 26:27, while the UW-Platteville
duo of Matt Rehberg and Nathan Richardson finished second and third
with times of 26:30 and 26:35, respectively.
Besides Haury, UW-Oshkosh had Ben Wizner
(Fr. • Onalaska) place 16th in 27:12, Mike Manders (Fr. •
Ashwaubenon) 17th in 27:18, Patrick O'Brien (Jr. • Marinette)

Kaul First, Titans Third At UW-Oshkosh Invitational
 Willy Kaul (Jr. • Menomonee Falls) finished
first among 318 runners to lead the UW-Oshkosh men’s cross
country team to a third-place performance in its own invitational
held Saturday (Oct. 14) at the Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne.
Calvin College (Mich.), the top-ranked team in the NCAA Division
III, scored 37 points to capture its third consecutive UW-Oshkosh
Invitational title. The Knights won the 18-team event by having
three of the top eight individual finishers.
Eighth-ranked New York University placed second with 69 points,
while third-ranked UW-Oshkosh listed third with 114, seventh-ranked
Haverford College (Pa.) fourth with 121 and Aquinas College (Mich.),
the sixth-ranked team in the National Association of Intercollegiate
Athletics (NAIA), fifth with 191.
Rounding out the top 10 teams were sixth-place Augustana College
(Ill.) with 191 points, seventh-place UW-Stevens Point with 208,
eighth-place Washington University (Mo.) with 222, ninth-place DePauw
University (Ind.) with 280 and 10th-place University of Chicago
(Ill.) with 305.
UW-Oshkosh’s Kaul paced all of the individual contestants
by completing the 8,000-meter course in a time of 24:20. He finished
third in the meet a year ago.
This year’s meet also featured Tim Finnegan of Calvin College
finishing second in 24:24, Ryan Williams of New York University
placing third in 24:34, Jon Phillips of New York University ranking
fourth in 24:36 and Donald Letts of Haverford College listing fifth
in 24:38.

UW-Oshkosh To Host Cross Country Spectacle
With 14 nationally-ranked
cross country teams visiting Winneconne's Lake Breeze Golf Course,
Saturday's (Oct. 14) UW-Oshkosh Invitational is expected to provide
all participants with one of their strongest challenges of the 2006
season.
The meet begins with the men's 8,000-meter
race at 10:30 a.m. and concludes with the women's 6,000-meter derby
at 11:15 a.m. Admission to the event is $5 per automobile. Spectators
are encouraged to arrive early.
The men's division features 18 teams,
including eight of the top 32 squads in the NCAA Division III. The
list of participants is led by top-ranked Calvin College (Mich.),
third-ranked UW-Oshkosh, seventh-ranked Haverford College (Pa.),
eighth-ranked New York University, 15th-ranked UW-Stevens Point,
22nd-ranked DePauw University (Ind.), 25th-ranked Augustana College
(Ill.) and 32nd-ranked University of Chicago (Ill.). The field also
includes Aquinas College (Mich.), the sixth-ranked team in the National
Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.
Other teams in the men's division are
Bethel College (Minn.), Carleton College (Minn.), Carthage College,
Emory University (Ga.), Greenville College (Ill.), Hope College
(Mich.), North Park University (Ill.), St. Norbert College and Washington
University (Mo.).
Last year at the NCAA Division III
Championship, Calvin College placed second, Haverford College third,
University of Chicago ninth and UW-Oshkosh 11th.
The women's category consists of 12
teams, including five of the top 30 squads in the NCAA Division
III. The directory of competitors is led by third-ranked Washington
University, seventh-ranked Calvin College, 20th-ranked DePauw University,
21st-ranked Emory University and 30th-ranked UW-Oshkosh.
Other teams in the women's grouping
are Bethel College, Carthage College, Greenville College, Hope College.
North Park University, University of Chicago and UW-Stevens Point.
Last fall at the NCAA Division III
Championship, Washington University finished third, UW-Stevens Point
10th, Emory University 11th, DePauw University 16th, Calvin College
17th and UW-Oshkosh 19th.
Calvin College scored 19 points to
finish first in the men's division of last year's UW-Oshkosh Invitational.
The Knights were followed by second-place UW-Oshkosh with 75 points
and third-place Aquinas College with 100.
In the women's section of last year's
UW-Oshkosh Invitational, Washington University took first place
with 37 points. The Bears were followed by second-place UW-Stevens
Point with 61 points and third-place UW-Oshkosh with 66.

Titans Grab Second Place At Ripon College Invitational
 Jon Simon's (Jr. • Milwaukee) first-place effort
helped the UW-Oshkosh men's cross country team finish second at
the Ripon College Invitational held Saturday (Oct. 7) in Ripon.
UW-Stevens Point captured the team
title with 31 points, while UW-Oshkosh placed second with 50 and
Wisconsin Track Club third with 71. UW-Oshkosh competed in the meet
without the services of its top nine runners.
Ripon College finished fourth in the
six-team meet with 89 points, while St. Norbert College ranked fifth
with 150 and Northland Baptist Bible College sixth with 169.
Simon claimed the individual championship
by completing the 8,000-meter course in a time of 26:24. Cory Towle
of UW-Stevens Point finished second in 26:40 and Bryan Schneider
of Ripon College third in 26:44.
In addition to Simon, UW-Oshkosh also
received scoring from Joshua Hoff's (Fr. • Boyceville) sixth-place
time of 26:54, Nick Sydow's (So. • Marshfield) 14th-place

Titans List Ninth At Blugold Open
 Competing without nine athletes who ran at the prestigious
Notre Dame Invitational earlier in the day, the UW-Oshkosh men's
cross country team still managed to place ninth at the Blugold Open
held Friday (Sept. 29) in Colfax.
St. John's University (Minn.) compiled
64 points to win the 15-team meet, while UW-La Crosse tallied 65
to finish second, University of Minnesota-Duluth 70 to rank third
and host UW-Eau Claire 139 to list fourth.
Polishing off the top 10 teams were
fifth-place UW-River Falls with 146 points, sixth-place St. Olaf
College (Minn.) with 177, seventh-place Bethel College (Minn.) with
183, eighth-place University of St. Thomas (Minn.) with 186, ninth-place
UW-Oshkosh with 291 and 10th-place Franklin College (Ind.) with
329.
The top UW-Oshkosh runner in the 8,000-meter
race was Jon Simon (Jr. • Milwaukee). Simon posted a 42nd-place
time of 26:57 to lead three UW-Oshkosh runners in the top 73 finishes.
In addition to Simon, the Titans had Joshua Hoff (Fr. • Boyceville)
place 61st in 27:19 and Nick Sydow (So. • Marshfield) 73rd
in 27:29. Eric Atkinson of the University of Minnesota-Duluth was

Kaul First, Titans Second At Notre Dame Invitational
 Willy Kaul (Jr. • Menomonee Falls) captured
the individual title to lead the UW-Oshkosh men's cross country
team to a second-place finish in the Gold Division of the Notre
Dame Invitational held Friday (Sept. 29) in South Bend, Ind.
Calvin College (Mich.), the top-ranked team in the
NCAA Division III by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country
Coaches Association, scored 31 points to win a meet dominated by
NCAA Division I squads.
UW-Oshkosh, ranked seventh in the NCAA
Division III, counted 96 points for its second-place finish, while
the University of Notre Dame (Ind.) tallied 138 to list third. The
University of Windsor (Ontario, Canada) finished fourth with 138
points and North Central College (Ill.), the ninth-ranked team in
the NCAA Division III, fifth with 180.
Rounding out the top-10 squads in the
25-team meet were sixth-place Hillsdale College (Mich.) with 245
points, seventh-place Ohio University with 250, eighth-place UW-Stevens
Point with 266, ninth-place Gonzaga University (Wash.) with 271
and 10th-place Anderson University (Ind.) with 274.
Kaul took individual honors by completing
the five-mile course in a time of 24:28. He finished third a year
ago with a time of 24:44. Tim Finnegan of Calvin College finished
second in the 2006 race with a time of 24:43 and Andrew Coates of
The University of Windsor third with a performance of 24:45.

Titans Rank Second At Calvin College Invitational
 UW-Oshkosh owned five of the top 16 individual finishers
and placed second at the Calvin College Men's Cross Country Invitational
held Saturday (Sept. 16) in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Calvin College scored 18 points to
dominate the nine-team meet, while UW-Oshkosh finished second with
62 points, Aquinas College (Mich.) third with 74, Ohio Northern
University fourth with 139 and Hope College (Mich.) fifth with 174.
UW-Oshkosh's Brian Kelley (Sr. •
Winnebago, Ill.) finished seventh in the 8,000-meter race with a
time of 25:42, while Andrew McGuire (So. • Wisconsin Rapids)
placed 12th in 25:55. The Titans also had Ryan Richardson (Sr. •
Winnebago, Ill.) grade 13th in 25:57, Derrick Fameree (So. •
Algoma) 14th in 26:07 and Nate Boehlke (Sr. • Sugar Camp)
16th in 26:11.
Calvin College swept the top two individual
listings as Timothy Finnegan placed first in 24:58 and Jed Christiansen
second in 25:07. A total of 140 runners finished the race.

Titans Finish Fourth In Season Opener
 The UW-Oshkosh men's cross country team rested its
top-11 runners and still managed to open its 2006 season with a
fourth-place finish at the Carroll College Invitational held Saturday
(Sept. 9) in Waukesha.
NCAA Division I University of Wisconsin
captured first place in the 12-team meet with 17 points, while Monmouth
College (Ill.) finished second with 76, St. Norbert College third
with 89, UW-Oshkosh fourth with 98 and Milwaukee School of Engineering
fifth with 129.
The top 10 teams were completed by
the 130 points of sixth-place Ripon College, 176 of seventh-place
Illinois Institute of Technology, 225 of eighth-place Concordia
University, 255 of ninth-place Lawrence University and 283 of 10th-place
Carroll College.
Jon Simon (Jr. • Milwaukee) posted
a 10th-place time of 26:54 to lead UW-Oshkosh in the 8,000-meter
race. The Titans also received team scoring from Joshua Hoff's (Fr.
• Boyceville) 15th-place time of 27:30, Nick Sydow's (So.
• Marshfield) 20th-place time of 27:44, Jacob Haury's (Fr.
• Milwaukee) 24th-place time of 28:04 and Mike Manders' (Fr.
• Ashwaubenon) 29th-place time of 28:15. University of Wisconsin's
Brandon Bethke took first place with a time of 25:50.
