Titans Finish 10th At NCAA Midwest Regional

Andrew McGuire (Jr. • Wisconsin Rapids) finished
22nd as the UW-Oshkosh men’s cross country team took 10th
place in the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional held Saturday
(Nov. 10) at the Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne.
UW-La Crosse captured the team title with a score
of 70 points, thanks to five finishers in the top-23 spots.
UW-Stevens Point followed in second place with 76, along with
North Central College (Ill.) third with 118, Augustana University
(Ill.) fourth with 152 and UW-Platteville fifth with 178. UW-La
Crosse and UW-Stevens Point each qualified for the NCAA Division
III Championship, which will be held Nov. 17 at St Olaf College
in Northfield, Minn.
McGuire clocked a time of 24:58 to lead the Titans, who were
attempting to qualify for their 20th NCAA Division III Championship.
UW-Oshkosh listed 10th in the 35-team field with 309 points
after placing ninth at the NCAA Division III Championship a
year ago.
In addition to McGuire, UW-Oshkosh also received scoring from
Geoff Gundlach’s (Sr. • Middleton) 50th-place time
of 25:26, Nick Sydow’s (Jr. • Marshfield) 69th-place
time of 25:41, Josh Hoff’s (So. • Boyceville) 84th-place
time of 26:06 and Ben Wizner’s (So. • Onalaska)
93rd-place time of 26:13.
Other UW-Oshkosh competitors included William Koepp (Fr. •
Lake Nebagamon), who finished 132nd in a time of 27:03 and Andrew
Vos (Fr. • Fort Atkinson), who placed 139th with a time
of 27:15.
Rounding out the top-10 teams at the Midwest Regional were sixth-place
Wheaton College (Ill.) with 210 points, seventh-place Washington
University (Mo.) with 227, eighth-place Carthage College with
276 and ninth-place UW-Whitewater with 280. Wheaton College
entered the race as the 15th-ranked team in the NCAA Division
III.
Tyler Sigl of UW-Platteville won the individual race with a
time of 24:01 to capture the Midwest Regional title for the
third consecutive year. Sigl was followed in second place by
Brandon Mull of North Central College in a time of 24:11. The
top five continued with Paul Zdroik of UW-La Crosse in third
at 24:17, Brian Butzler of UW-Whitewater fourth at 24:20 and
Cory Towle of UW-Stevens Point fifth in a time of 24:22.
The remaining top-10 individual finishes included a sixth-place
performance by Jeff Pentek of St. Norbert College in a time
of 24:29, seventh-place Ryan McCarl of the University of Chicago
(Ill.) in a time of 24:32, eighth-place Micah Lorenzen of Concordia
University Wisconsin in a time of 24:37, ninth-place Dom Meyer
of UW-Stevens Point in a time of 24:38 and 10th-place Michael
Spain of North Central College in a time of 24:41. |
Titans Finish Fifth At WIAC Championship

UW-Oshkosh notched seven runners in the top 50 finishers
to take fifth place in the WIAC Men’s Cross Country Championship
held Saturday (Oct. 27) at the Lake Breeze Golf Club in Winneconne.
UW-La Crosse registered 40 points to capture its fourth consecutive
WIAC championship and 29th in program history. UW-Platteville
and UW-Stevens Point tied for second place with 65 points, followed
by UW-Whitewater in fourth with 139, UW-Oshkosh fifth with 150,
UW-Eau Claire sixth with 177, UW-Stout seventh with 189, UW-Superior
eighth with 204 and UW-River Falls ninth with 219.
Individually, UW-Platteville’s Tyler Sigl made WIAC history
by becoming the fourth person to claim three or more league
titles. He completed the 8,000-meter race in a time of 24:11.85.
Sigl joins a prestigious group that already includes UW-Whitewater’s
Tom Hoffman and UW-La Crosse’s Jim Drews and Joe Hanson.
Hoffman won titles from 1966-68, while Drews and Hanson captured
championships from 1970-73 and 1974-77, respectively.
UW-La Crosse had five runners finish in the top 13 to guide
the winning effort. Paul Zdroik placed second with a time of
24:35.63, while Connor Lonning was fourth in 24:59.60, Paul
Moran ninth in 25:17.82, Dallas Vincent 12th in 25:20.88 and
Ben Herdeman 13th in 25:31.26.
UW-Whitewater’s Brian Butzler finished third with a clocking
of 24:49.54, followed by UW-Stevens Point’s Cory Towle
in fifth at 25:04.06, UW-Superior’s Jason Lindel sixth
in 25:09.54, UW-Oshkosh’s Andrew McGuire (Jr. •
Wisconsin Rapids) seventh in 25:11.54, UW-Stevens Point’s
Phil Richert eighth in 25:14.01 and UW-Platteville’s Tony
Kilburg 10th in 25:19.41.
Following McGuire’s performance for the Titans were Geoff
Gundlach’s (Sr. • Middleton) 38th-place effort in
26:10, Andrew Vos’ (Fr. • Fort Atkinson) 43rd-place
mark of 26:25, Ben Wizner’s (So. • Onalaska) 45th-place
time of 26:31and Nick Sydow’s (Jr. • Marshfield)
47th-place finish in 26:34.
The Titans' Josh Hoff (So. • Boyceville) took 49th in
26:39, William Koepp (Fr. • Lake Nebagamon) grabbed 50th
in 26:42 and Justin Darrow (So. • Sobieski) listed 55th
with a mark of 26:59. Derrick Fameree (Jr. • Algoma) followed
in 61st at 27:09, along with Jon Simon (Sr. • Milwaukee)
in 66th at 27:22, Adam Zamzow (Jr. • Green Bay) in 71st
at 27:31 and Ben Brunner (Fr. • Mount Horeb) in 97th at
29:01.
The top seven individuals received All-WIAC first team recognition,
while runners placing eighth through 14th earned All-WIAC second
team accolades.
UW-La Crosse head coach Don Fritsch was named WIAC Coach of
the Year, while the Eagles’ Dan Thour received the league's
Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete Award.
Named to the inaugural All-Sportsmanship Team were UW-Eau Claire’s
Mark Sanders, UW-La Crosse’s Zdroik, UW-Oshkosh’s
Gundlach, UW-Platteville’s Kilburg, UW-River Falls’
Andrew Reckard, UW-Stevens Point’s Dominick Meyer, UW-Stout’s
Nate Carey, UW-Superior’s Lee Sims and UW-Whitewater’s
Josh Smith.
All nine WIAC teams return to this very same course on Nov.
10 to compete at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional. The

UW-Oshkosh To Host WIAC Championship
Winneconne’s
Lake Breeze Golf Club will be the site as the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh
hosts the 47th installment of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (WIAC) Men’s Cross Country Championship at 1 p.m.
on Saturday (Oct. 27).
This year’s meet features all nine WIAC teams, with eight
of them attempting to dethrone a UW-La Crosse program that has captured
three straight championships and 28 overall. The Eagles scored 35
points to win last year’s title, while UW-Oshkosh finished
second with 58, UW-Platteville third with 76 and UW-Stevens Point
fourth with 90. All four teams are expected to contend for this
year’s crown, with UW-Oshkosh last winning the championship
in 2003, UW-Platteville in 1970 and UW-Stevens Point in 1997.
WIAC men’s cross county has once again put forth a strong
national showing as four teams enter Saturday’s meet ranked
among the finest in the NCAA Division III by the U.S. Track and
Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. UW-La Crosse ranks
third to lead all WIAC mentions, while UW-Platteville lists seventh,
UW-Stevens Point 11th and UW-Oshkosh 28th.
Individually, UW-Platteville senior Tyler Sigl runs for a chunk
of WIAC history as he looks to become the fourth person to claim
three or more league titles. If successful, the two-time defending
champion would join a prestigious group that already includes UW-Whitewater’s
Tom Hoffman and UW-La Crosse’s Jim Drews and Joe Hanson. Hoffman
won titles from 1966-68, while Drews and Hanson captured championships
from 1970-73 and 1974-77, respectively.
UW-La Crosse features one of the best front-running duos in the
WIAC in senior Paul Zdroik and sophomore Paul Moran. Zdroik finished
seventh at last year’s championship, while Moran placed eighth.
UW-Stevens Point also owns an outstanding pair of lead runners in
junior Travis Nechuta and senior Dominick Meyer. Nechuta ranked
sixth at last year’s meet, while Meyer listed 13th.
Other runners expected to finish in the top 10 in this year’s
8,000-meter race are senior Brian Butzler of UW-Whitewater and junior
Andrew McGuire of UW-Oshkosh. Butzler finished third in the league
a year ago, while McGuire placed 10th.
The top-seven runners at this year’s spectacle earn All-WIAC
first team honors. Runners placing eighth through 14th will receive
All-WIAC second team accolades.
Admission to the meet is $5 per automobile. Spectators are encouraged
to arrive early for the meet.
All nine WIAC teams return to this very same course on Nov. 10 to
compete at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional. The NCAA Division
III Championship is scheduled for Nov. 17 in Northfield, Minn.

Brunner Leads Titans At
UW-Oshkosh Open
  Ben Brunner's (Fr. • Mount Horeb) eighth-place
finish led UW-Oshkosh in a men's cross country meet the Titans hosted
Friday (Oct. 19) at the Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne.
The non-scoring meet featured athletes
from Carthage College, Milwaukee School of Engineering, UW-Oshkosh,
UW-Parkside, UW-Platteville and UW-Stevens Point.
UW-Stevens Point had the top collegiate
finisher in the 8,000-meter race as Tim Thornburg placed third with
a time of 27:19. The Pointers also had Adam Steinke finish fourth
in 27:23 and Dan Brinker seventh in 27:28. Wisconsin Track Club
teammates Joel Wood and Joe Binder placed first and second with
times of 26:42 and 26:59, respectively.
Brunner paced UW-Oshkosh with his eighth-place
time of 27:30. The Titans also had Adam Zamzow (Jr. • Green
Bay) finish 11th in 27:35, Bobby Gibson (Fr. • Kewaskum) 31st
in 28:37, Jake Haury (So. • Milwaukee) 33rd in 28:43, Dusty
Dorshorst (So. • Poynette) 36th in 29:00, Jeff Baudry (So.
• Oakfield) 45th in 29:23, Kevin Carew (Fr. • Hartland)
51st in 30:12 and Tim Schneider (Fr. • Onalaska) 53rd in 30:42.
A total of 60 runners finished the race.

only eight of its 19 runners. A large portion of those UW-Oshkosh

Titans Run To Seventh Place
At Brooks Invitational
  The UW-Oshkosh men’s cross country team finished
seventh out of 22 teams at the UW-Oshkosh Brooks Invitational held
on Saturday (Oct. 13) at Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne.
New York University amassed a score of 68 points to win the event,
followed by Haverford College (Pa.) in second with 71, North Central
College (Ill.) third with 90, UW-Stevens Point fourth with 141 and
Augustana College (Ill.) fifth with 176. The Titans totaled a score
of 213 points on the 8,000-meter course.
The University of Wisconsin’s Brian Butzler took the individual
title with a time of 24:01.71, while New York University captured
the second and fifth places with Ryan Williams’ mark of 24:10.04
and Jesse Schneider’s number of 24:16.48. Haverford College's
Ian Ramsey-North and Donald Letts took third and fourth, respectively,
in 24:12.29 and 24:15.34.
Andrew McGuire (Jr. • Wisconsin Rapids) topped all Titan runners
with a 12th-place time of 24:38, as Nick Sydow (Jr. • Marshfield)
earned 47th in 25:25.51 and Geoff Gundlach (Sr. • Middleton)
captured 51st with a mark of 25:28.30.
Derrick Fameree (Jr. • Algoma) finished 55th in 25:31.16 and
Josh Hoff (So. • Boyceville) 79th in 24:45.15 to complete UW-Oshkosh’s
double-digit results.
Other participants included Ben Wizner (So. • Onalaska) in 106th
at 26:03.86, Jon Simon (Sr. • Milwaukee) 113th in 26:07.91,
William Koepp (Fr. • Lake Nebagamon) 124th in 26:16.33 and Jake
Haury (So. • Milwaukee) 156th with a time of 26:38.46.
Justin Darrow (So. • Sobieski) took 165th in 26:50.44, along
with Adam Zamzow (Jr. • Green Bay) in 185th at 27:07.32, Ben
Brunner (Fr. • Mount Horeb) in 197th at 27:17.19 and Bobby Gibson
(Fr. • Kewaskum) in 225th with a time of 27:47.12.

UW-Oshkosh To Host Cross Country Festival
Athletes
from nine nationally-ranked men's teams and four nationally-ranked
women's squads will race around Winneconne's Lake Breeze Golf Course
on Saturday (Oct. 13) as UW-Oshkosh hosts the Brooks Cross Country
Invitational.
The 14-team
women's race begins at 10:30 a.m. It features third-ranked Washington
University (Mo.), 17th-ranked Haverford College (Pa.), 24th ranked
The College of New Jersey and 27th-ranked Wheaton College (Ill.).
Other teams in the women's division are Aurora University (Ill.),
Bethel University (Minn.), Carroll College, Dominican University
(Ill.), Elmhurst College (Ill.), Hope College (Mich.), Lake Forest
College (Ill.), Millikin University (Ill.), North Park University
(Ill.), Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.), UW-Oshkosh, UW-Stevens
Point and UW-Whitewater.
Washington University, which finished fourth at the 2006 NCAA Division
III Championship, captured last year's Brooks Invitational title
with 38 points. UW-Oshkosh placed sixth with 136 points.
The top individual
returning from last year's 6,000-meter race is Nikki Umhoefer of
Bethel University. Umhoefer finished second a year ago with a time
of 21:57. A total of 163 runners finished the race.
The 22-team men's race starts at 11:15 a.m. The list of contestants
is led by second
ranked New York University, sixth-ranked Haverford College, ninth-ranked
Augustana College (Ill.) and North Central College (Ill.), 13th-ranked
UW-Stevens Point, 20th-ranked The College of New Jersey, 21st-ranked
Wheaton College, 33rd-ranked Washington University and 35th-ranked
UW-Oshkosh.
Other squads in the men's division are Aurora University, Bethel
College, Carroll College, Carthage College, College of St. Scholastica
(Minn.), Elmhurst College, Hope College, Lake Forest College, Macalester
College (Minn.), Millikin University, North Park University, Olivet
Nazarene University and UW-Whitewater.
Calvin College
(Mich.) counted 37 points to claim last year's team title. New York
University finished second with 69 points and UW-Oshkosh third with
114. New York University finished second at the 2006 NCAA Division
III Championship.
The top runner
back from last year's 8,000-meter race is Ryan Williams of New York
University. Williams finished third with a time of 24:34. A total
of 318 runners finished the race.

Titans Place Third At Ripon
College Invitational
  The UW-Oshkosh men’s cross country team rested
its top-10 runners and still had enough talent to take third place
at the Ripon College Invitational held Saturday (Oct. 6) in Ripon.
UW-Stevens Point won the five-team event with 30 points, while Ripon
College finished second with 33, UW-Oshkosh third with 80, Carroll
College fourth with 98 and Concordia University Wisconsin fifth with
153.
William Koepp (Fr. • Lake Nebagamen) led the Titans with a 17th-place
time of 29:03, while Bobby Gibson (Fr. • Kewaskum) finished
21st in 29:17, Dusty Dorshorst (So. • Poynette) 22nd in 29:22
and Ben Brunner (Fr. • Mount Horeb) 23rd in 29:34. UW-Oshkosh
completed its scoring with Jake Haury's (So. • Milwaukee) 35th-place
time of 31:15.46.
Ripon College had the top-three finishes as Jim Hein won the individual
title with a time of 26:52, Joe Cardillo finished second in 27:16
and Bryan Schneider third in 27:27. UW-Stevens Point followed with
the next six place winners to account for the two-point team victory.
A total of 60 runners finished the race.

Titans Finish 15th At Notre
Dame Invitational
  Andrew McGuire (Jr. • Wisconsin Rapids) took
24th place as the UW-Oshkosh men’s cross country team finished
15th at the Notre Dame University (Ind.) Invitational held Friday
(Sept. 28) in South Bend, Ind.
NCAA Division II Grand Valley State University (Mich.) won the team
title with a score of 93 points, followed by Calvin College (Mich.)
in second with 106, Illinois State University third with 130, U.S.
Military Academy (N.Y.) fourth with 155 and The University of Windsor
(Ontario, Canada) fifth with 178. UW-Oshkosh totaled 440 points in the 25-team
meet.
McGuire marked a time of 25:31 to lead the Titans, while Grand Valley
State University's Nate Peck won the five-mile event in 24:25. High
Point University’s (N.C.) Tamas Kovacs finished second in 24:45,
along with Ohio University’s Craig Leon third at 24:56, Calvin
College's Jed Christiansen fourth in 24:57 and High Point University's
Jesse Cherry in fifth place with a time of 25:02.
Geoff Gundlach (Sr. • Middleton) ended up 75th in 26:24, while
Josh Hoff (So. • Boyceville) grabbed 116th in 26:56 and Andrew
Vos (Fr. • Fort Atkinson) earned 118th at 26:58. Nick Sydow
(Jr. • Marshfield) finished 142nd in 27:22 and Justin Darrow
(So. • Sobieski) 143rd in 27:23 for the Titans.
Other UW-Oshkosh runners included Ben Wizner’s (So. •
Onalaska) 172nd-place time of 27:55, Jon Simon’s (Sr. •
Milwaukee) 173rd-place clocking of 27:59 and Derrick Fameree’s
(Jr. • Algoma) 192nd-place mark of 28:54. A total of 209 runners

Titans Take Second At Concordia University Wisconsin Invitational
  UW-Oshkosh placed six runners in the top-23 finishers
to grab second place at the Concordia University Wisconsin Men’s
Cross Country Invitational held Saturday (Sep. 22) in Milwaukee.
Ripon College won the event with a team score of 23 points, followed
by UW-Oshkosh with 47 and Concordia University Wisconsin in third
with 88. Carthage College took fourth place with 98, along with Maranatha
Baptist Bible College in fifth with 135 and Cardinal Stritch University
in sixth with 181.
Concordia University Wisconsin's Micah Lozenzen took the individual
title with a time of 25:50.10 on the 8,000-meter course. Second place
went to Jim Hein of Ripon College in 26:10.42, third to Nick Limoni
of the Wisconsin Track Club in 26:21.71, fourth to Harrison Smith
of Ripon College in 26:29.97 and fifth to Zach Burns of the Wisconsin
Track Club in a time of 26:35.72.
The Titans’ Adam Zamzow (Jr. • Green Bay) finished eighth
in 27:24.45, while William Koepp (Fr. • Lake Nebagamon) took
11th in 28:03.27 and Bobby Gibson (Fr. • Kewaskum) notched 16th
in 28:20.77.
Other finishers for UW-Oshkosh included 20th-place Jake Haury (So.
• Milwaukee) in 28:35.96, 22nd-place Jeff Baudry (So. •
Oakfield) in 28:52.45 and 23rd-place Ben Brunner (Fr. • Mount

Calvin College Invitational
  UW-Oshkosh possessed four of the top-24 individual
finishers and placed fourth at the Calvin College Men's Cross Country
Invitational held Saturday (Sept. 15) in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Calvin College scored 31 points to dominate the 10-team meet, while
Aquinas College (Mich.) finished second with 75 points, Ohio Northern
University third with 78, UW-Oshkosh fourth with 90 and Case Western
Reserve University (Ohio) fifth with 108.
UW-Oshkosh's Andrew McGuire (Jr. • Wisconsin Rapids) finished
sixth in the 8,000-meter race in a time of 25:25 and Derrick Fameree
(Jr. • Algoma) placed eighth in a time of 25:29 to place in
the top 10. The Titans also had Ben Wizner (So. • Onalaska)
grade 22nd in a time of 25:50 and Nick Sydow (Jr. • Marshfield)
24th in a time of 25:53. Calvin College captured three of the top-four
places as Jed Christiansen finished first in a time of 24:49. Christiansen
finished second in last year's race.
The top-five places continued with Aquinas College's Chris Robertz
taking second in a time of 25:02, the Knights' Tad Hulst third in
a time of 25:06 and Jon Gries fourth in a time of 25:11 and Case Western
Reserve University's Dominic Smith fifth in a time of 25:15. A total
of 140 runners finished the race.
UW-Oshkosh had a trio of runners cross the finish line in just over
26 minutes as Jon Simon (Sr. • Milwaukee) finished 30th in a
time of 26:03, Josh Hoff (So. • Boyceville) 31st in a time of
26:04 and Justin Darrow (So. • Sobieski) 32nd in a time of 26:06.
UW-Oshkosh's individual results also featured Andrew Vos (Fr. •
Fort Atkinson) in 37th in a time of 26:13, Geoff Gundlach (Sr. •

Titans Win Season Debut
  UW-Oshkosh owned the third through 11th place results
to capture the team title of the North Park University (Ill.) Ted
Hedstrand Invitational held on Saturday (Sept. 8) in Chicago.
The Titans scored 20 points to dominate the five-team meet, while
Trinity Christian College (Ill.) finished second with 61 points, Lake
Forest College (Ill.) third with 89, North Park University fourth
with 100 and Moraine Valley Community College (Ill.) fifth with 104.
UW-Oshkosh's Andrew McGuire (Jr. • Wisconsin Rapids) led the
Titans by finishing third in the 8,000-meter race with a time of 27:02.41,
while Andrew Vos (Fr. • Fort Atkinson) placed fourth in 27:02.68.
The Titans also had Derrick Fameree (Jr. • Algoma) tally fifth
in a time of 27:02.93 and Justin Darrow (So. • Sobieski) list
sixth in a time of 27:03.20.
Trinity Christian College's Andrew Jellema captured the individual
title in a time of 26:05.36 followed by DePaul University's (Ill.)
Rob Moran in second place in a time of 26:47.65. A total of 51 runners
finished the race.
UW-Oshkosh's top-10 individual results continued with Nick Sydow (Jr.
• Marshfield) finishing seventh in 27:03.20, Ben Witzer (So.
• Onalaska) in eighth in a time of 27:03.74, Josh Hoff (So.
• Boyceville) in ninth in a time of 27:04.03 and Jon Simon (Sr.
• Milwaukee) in 10th in a time of 27:04.28. A total of only
1.6 seconds separated the Titans' top seven runners.
Other UW-Oshkosh results had Jake Haury (So. • Milwaukee) place
11th in 27:04.77, Adam Zamzow (Jr. • Green Bay) 13th in 27:08.90,
