UW-Oshkosh Wins Program Of The Year Award
The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association has announced UW-Oshkosh as its first winner of the NCAA Division III Al Carius Men’s Program of the Year Award.
UW-Oshkosh earned the top prize after winning a pair of NCAA Division III track and field titles and placing ninth nationally in cross country.
The Titans won their first national indoor track and field title on March 14, tying Program of the Year runner-up UW-La Crosse, and then captured their first national outdoor track and field title on May 23. UW-Oshkosh also placed ninth at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championship on Nov. 22 to finish with a final Program of the Year score of 11.5 points.
UW-La Crosse was just behind UW-Oshkosh in the standings with 12.5 points. UW-Stevens Point finished third in the competition with 38.5 points, while Whitworth University (Wash.) ranked fourth with 40.5 and North Central College (Ill.) fifth with 41.
The Al Carius Program of the Year Award is presented to the most outstanding NCAA Division III men’s cross country and track and field program. The award, named after North Central College's legendary coach, honors the institution that achieved the most success while competing at national meets in the sports of cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field.
In order to be eligible for the award, teams must qualify for each of the three NCAA Division III championship meets. Scoring is based on each team’s finish, with one point going to first place. The lowest combined score for all three championships determine the award winner.
Wartburg College (Iowa) was the winner of the Deb Vercauteren Women's Program of the Year Award.

Kaul Named NCAA Track Athlete Of The Year
National titles in both the 5,000-meter run and distance medley relay earned UW-Oshkosh's Willy Kaul (Sr. • Menomonee Falls) NCAA Division III Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Year honors by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country

Kaul out-kicked the competition to win the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:31.46 at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship held March 13-14 in Terre Haute, Ind. It was the second straight 5,000-meter run title for Kaul, who also received All-America honors with a seventh-place finish in the event in 2007.
In the distance medley relay, Kaul ran the anchor leg as UW-Oshkosh set a meet record with a first-place time of 9:56.79. He also was a member of the Titans' national champion distance medley relay team in 2007.
Kaul was named Track Athlete of the Meet at 2009 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship. His performance helped UW-Oshkosh score 32 points and share first place in the team standings with UW-La Crosse.
Kaul won five of his six races during the recently concluded indoor season, with the only exception being his third-place finish in the 5,000-meter run at the Iowa State University Track and Field Classic held Feb. 13-14. Kaul ran to a time of 14:12.64 at the meet to record one of the fastest performances in NCAA Division III history.
At the WIAC Indoor Track and Field
Championship held Feb. 28-March 1, Kaul was voted the meet's Outstanding Track Performer after winning both the one-mile run and 3,000-meter run. He also ran on the Titans' first-place distance medley relay team. Kaul's efforts helped UW-Oshkosh place third in the team standings
with 121 points.

Titans Share NCAA Title With Conference Rival

First-place finishes in both the 5,000-meter run and distance medley relay helped UW-Oshkosh earn a portion of the team title at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Men's Indoor Track and Field Championship held Friday and Saturday (March 13-14) in Terre Haute, Ind.
UW-Oshkosh scored 32 points over five events to capture its first national track and field title. The Titans, who were coming off three straight third-place finishes, share the top prize with their Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) rival UW-La Crosse. It was the second straight title for the Eagles and 15th overall.
Whitworth University (Wash.) finished third in the team standings with 24 points, while McMurry University (Texas) placed fourth with 23 and Buena Vista University (Iowa) fifth with 21.
Rounding out the top 10 teams were sixth-place Trinity University (Texas) with 20 points, seventh-place North Central College (Ill.) with 19.5, eighth-place UW-Stevens Point with 17.5, ninth-place Thiel College (Pa.) with 17 and 10th-place Salisbury University (Md.) with 16. A total of 74 teams scored points.
Willy Kaul (Sr. • Menomonee Falls), who was named Track Athlete of the Meet by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country
Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), led UW-Oshkosh. Kaul successfully defended his title in the 5,000-meter run while competing as a member of the Titans' distance medley relay team that tasted victory for the second time in three years.
In the 5,000-meter run, the top-seeded Kaul strolled to a winning time of 14:31.46. Dallas Vincent of UW-La Crosse finished second with a time of 14:33.76 and Jed Christiansen of Calvin College (Mich.) third in 14:34.25. Kaul also finished seventh with a time of 14:47.50 in 2007.
Second-seeded UW-Oshkosh set a meet record in the distance medley relay as Kaul, Nate Stymiest (Fr. • Oconto), Ben Wizner (So. • Onalaska) and Ben Zill (Jr. • New Franken) ran to a first-place time of 9:56.79. UW-Oshkosh, which also won the event in 2003 and 2007, was followed by UW-La Crosse's second-place time of 9:59.30 and Tufts University's (Mass.) third-place performance of 10:04.25.
Zill, who was a member of last year's distance medley relay team that finished seventh with a time of 10:08.15, placed fifth in this year's pentathlon competition with a school-record 3,620 points. He entered the meet as the sixth seed. Todd Wildman of Trinity University won the event with 3,859 points, while Ted McMillan of Augustana College (Ill.) placed second with 3,721.
In the triple jump, fourth-seeded James Simms (Jr. • Fredonia) leaped 47-3 3/4 to record his second straight fourth-place finish. Alex Samma of Connecticut College took first place with a distance of 49-5 1/2 and Isaac Bell of Christopher Newport University (Va.) second with a mark of 48-5 1/2. Simms jumped to a distance of 48-1 1/4 a year ago.
Eighth-seeded Andrew McGuire (Sr. • Wisconsin Rapids) added a sixth-place time of 4:11.01 in the one-mile run. Defending champion Peter Kosgei of Hamilton College (N.Y.) won the race with a time of 4:08.58, while Brian McConnell of Elmhurst College (Ill.) finished second with a performance of 4:09.30.
In the 35-pound weight throw, eighth-seeded Andrew Stephany finished 10th and ninth-seeded Ben Ludtke 12th with distances of 53-0 ¼ and 51-3 ¾, respectively. Sam Johnson of UW-Eau Claire won the event with a cast of 65-0 ¾, while Eric Jones of St. Lawrence University (N.Y.) placed second with a fling of 59-3.
The top eight finishers in each event receive NCAA Division III All-America recognition by the USTFCCCA.
The NCAA Division III title is the 26th in UW-Oshkosh history. The Titans previously won NCAA Division III championships in the sports of baseball (1985 and 1994), women's basketball (1996), men's cross country (1988, 1989, 1990 and 2002), women's cross country (1987, 1988, 1991 and 1996), women's indoor track and field (1994, 1995, 1996, 2004, 2005 and 2006) and women's outdoor track and field (1990, 1991, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2004, 2006 and 2007).

Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) has named UW-Oshkosh as its 2009 champion of the NCAA Division III men's indoor track and field dual meet rankings.
UW-Oshkosh earned 161.93 points in the rankings, which simulate dual meet competition between the nation's top collegiate track and field squads. A team's total point score is the sum of all points earned by that team in each event. Teams are allowed to select up to two athletes per event, and an athlete can only be used in a maximum of three events (not including relays). Only one relay team per event can be selected. The points are based on the best marks in an event in the current season.
UW-Oshkosh, which finished fourth in last year's rankings, was followed by second-place UW-Stevens Point with 160.48 points, third-place UW-La Crosse with 157.25, fourth-place North Central College (Ill.) with 157.16 and fifth-place UW-Eau Claire with 156.21.

Kaul is seeded first among the 14 participants in the 5,000-meter run for this weekend's (March 13-14) NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship in Terre Haute, Ind. His qualifying time of 14:12.64 is nearly 19 seconds faster than the performance of second-seeded Jed Christiansen of Calvin College (Mich.). Kaul is the event's defending champion.
Kaul will also run the 1,600-meter leg of UW-Oshkosh's distance medley relay at this weekend's national meet. The Titans are seeded second among the event's 10 entrants with a time of 9:59.62.

Titans To Compete For First NCAA Title

Entries in six events has helped UW-Oshkosh become one of the contenders for the team title at this weekend's NCAA Division III Men's Indoor Track and Field Championship in Terre Haute, Ind. The two-day meet meet begins Friday (March 13) and concludes on Saturday (March 14) at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology's Sports and Recreation Center.
UW-Oshkosh will be represented at the national meet by nine athletes, including defending 5,000-meter run champion Willy Kaul (Sr. • Menomonee Falls). Other individual qualifiers are Ben Ludtke (Fr. • Lyons) and Andrew Stephany (So. • Kimberly) in the 35-pound weight throw, Andrew McGuire (Sr. • Wisconsin Rapids) in the one-mile run, James Simms (Jr. • Fredonia) in the triple jump and Bill Zill (Jr. • New Franken) in the pentathlon. Kaul, Zill, Nate Stymiest (Fr. • Oconto) and Ben Wizner (So. • Onalaska) will run for the Titans in the distance medley relay.

Kaul won last year's race with a time of 14:23.43 after finishing seventh with an effort of 14:47.50 in 2007.
In the 35-pound weight throw, Stephany is seeded eighth and Ludtke ninth with distances of 57-2 1/4 and 56-8 3/4, respectively. Sam Johnson of UW-Eau Claire is seeded first among the 14 entrants with a toss of 63-11.
McGuire competes as the eighth seed in the one-mile run with a time of 4:11.93. Craig MacPherson of Keene State College (N.H.) ranks first among the event's 14 competitors with a time of 4:09.62.
Simms seeks another All-America award in the triple jump after finishing fourth with a distance of 48-1 1/4 at last year's meet. He is seeded fourth among this year's 14 qualifiers with a mark of 48-4 1/2. Issac Bell of Christopher Newport University (Va.) is seeded first with a distance of 48-9.
Zill performs as the sixth seed in the pentathlon with a school-record 3,559 points. The event features 12 contestants, including Obinna Nwanna of Case Western Reserve University (Ohio) who owns a top total of 3,723 points.
UW-Oshkosh's distance medley relay team is seeded second among the 10 entrants with a time of 9:59.62. Stymiest opens the race for the Titans by running 1,200 meters. He will be followed by the 400 meters of Zill, 800 meters of Wizner and the 1,600 meters of Kaul. The University of St. Thomas (Minn.) is seeded first in the event with a time of 9:58.31. UW-Oshkosh finished seventh in last year's race with a time of 10:08.15 after winning the event with a time of 10:01.85 in 2007.
The top eight finishers in each event receive NCAA Division III All-America recognition by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
UW-Oshkosh, which has finished third in team standings at the past three NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships, is expected to battle Keene State College, North Central College (Ill.), University of St. Thomas, defending champion UW-La Crosse and Whitworth University (Wash.) for this year's team title.

Titans Take One First, One Second
At UW-Stevens Point Open
 The UW-Oshkosh men’s track and field team earned one first-place finish at the UW-Stevens Point Open held Saturday (March 7) in Stevens Point.
Capturing first-place for the Titans was Grant O’Connell (So. • Clintonville) in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:01.03.
UW-Oshkosh's Andrew Stephany (So. • Kimberly) took second place in the 35-pound weight throw with a cast of 57-2 1/4.
Taking fourth-place for the Titans were Brent Jude (Jr. • Milwaukee) in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.50, Ben Wizner (So. • Onalaska) in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:56.04 and Adam Leib (Fr. • Oshkosh) in the long jump with a distance of 21-2 ¾.
The Titans' Pete Wheiland (Fr. • Slinger) collected a fifth-place finish with his launch of 51-7 1/4 in the shot put.
A sixth-place finish went to UW-Oshkosh's Trevor Riehle-Ludtke (Fr. • Franksville) in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.92.
No team scores were kept at the meet.

Titans Take Third Place At WIAC Championship

UW-La Crosse won its eighth consecutive WIAC Men's Indoor Track and Field Championship following the conclusion of the two-day league meet at UW-Stout's Sports & Fitness Center on March 1.
The Eagles secured the 34th WIAC crown in program history with 141.50 team points to surpass UW-Stevens Point's second-place sum of 135.50 points. UW-Oshkosh finished third with 121 points, while UW-Whitewater was fourth with 94.50, UW-Eau Claire fifth with 85, UW-Platteville sixth with 53.50, UW-Stout seventh with 38 and UW-River Falls eighth with 29. UW-Superior also participated in the meet. The eight point margin of victory was the closest since the 1989 championship when the Titans defeated the Eagles 140.50-137.
Dave Stauder led UW-La Crosse's effort on the second day of events after securing the high jump title with a height of 6-8 1/4.
UW-Oshkosh's Willy Kaul was named the Track Performer of the Meet after winning the one-mile run and 3,000-meter run with times of 4:12.28 and 8:33.69, respectively. He won the 3,000-meter competition for the second straight year.
The Titans' James Simms was victorious in the triple jump for the second straight season with a leap of 48-4 1/2. He is the first individual in WIAC history to win back-to-back titles in the event since UW-La Crosse's Travis Horstman in 1994-95.
UW-Oshkosh's 4x200-meter relay team of Dean Jensen, A.J. Hollanquest, Chad Churchill and Shane Diederichs posted a first-place time of 1:29.59.
UW-Whitewater had a pair of winners during the second day in Isiah Gray and Matt Kovnesk. Gray claimed the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.49, while Kovnesk earned the 800-meter run with a clocking of 1:54.43.
Gray and Kovnesk were also members of the Warhawks' first-place 4x400-meter relay quartet with Peter Schroeder and Joe Bailey. They posted a time of 3:22.15.
UW-Stevens Point's Keith Ingram captured the 55-meter dash and 200-meter dash with performances of 6.35 and 22.07, respectively. The Pointers' Mike Dellemann claimed the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.77.
UW-Eau Claire's Sam Johnson secured the 35-pound weight throw with a fling of 63-11 and was named the Field Performer of the Meet, while UW-La Crosse's Brad Peterson received the WIAC Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete Award.
Champions during the first day of events included: UW-Oshkosh's Ben Zill won the pentathlon with 2,751 points, while the Titans' distance medley relay quartet of Nate Symiest, Nick Katsandonis, Jared Morris and Willy Kaul posted a first-place time of 9:59.62.
UW-La Crosse's Bobby Riley won the shot put title for the third straight year with a heave of 57-0 1/4. He is sixth individual in WIAC history to win the event three consecutive seasons.
UW-Eau Claire's Chris Wirtz was victorious in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:51.48, while UW-Stout's Daniel Drewek won the pole vault with a height of 16-5 1/2.
UW-Whitewater's Cory Lockridge earned the long jump crown with a leap of 22-5 3/4.
Named to the Larry Zirgibel All-Sportsmanship Team were: UW-Eau Claire's Justin Janke, UW-La Crosse's Pat Bryan, UW-Oshkosh's Nick Katsandonis, UW-Platteville's Mitch Spees, UW-River Falls' Tony Casci, UW-Stevens Point's Greg Haak, UW-Stout's Kendall Wade, UW-Superior's Sam Maday and UW-Whitewater's Shaun Davis.

Ludtke Selected WIAC Field Athlete Of The Week
The WIAC has voted UW-Oshkosh's Ben Ludtke (Fr. • Lyons) as one of its two WIAC Men's Track and Field Athlete of the Week award winners for meets held Feb. 16-22.
Ludtke was honored for his performance in the field events. The top track citation went to UW-La Crosse's distance medley relay team of Ryan Mendez, Dallas Vincent, Zach Wilhelmy and Mitch Wilson.
Ludtke threw to a distance of 56-8 3/4 in winning the 35-pound weight throw at the UW-Oshkosh Invitational held Feb. 21.
Ludtke, who defeated 18 other participants, surpassed the provisional qualifying standard for next month’s NCAA Division III Indoor Championship with his throw. Andrew Stephany of UW-Oshkosh finished second in the event with a mark of 56-6 1/2 and Tony Baker of UW-Oshkosh third at 54-5 1/2.

Kaul Receives WIAC Track Athlete Of The Week Award
UW-Oshkosh's Willy Kaul (Sr. • Menomonee Falls) has been announced as one of two WIAC Men's Track and Field Athlete of the Week award winners for meets held Feb. 9-15.
Kaul was recognized for his performance on the track, while San Johnson of UW-Eau Claire was cited for his effort in the field events.
Kaul recorded the fastest indoor 5,000-meter run time in WIAC history when he finished third in the event at the Iowa State University Track and Field Classic held Feb. 13-14.
Kaul ran to a time of 14:07.14, with his nation-leading performance surpassing the automatic qualifying standard for next month’s NCAA Division III Indoor Championship in Terre Haute, Ind. His effort would’ve eclipsed the provisional qualifying standard for the NCAA Division I Championship.
Blake Boldon of the Boulder Running Club won the race of 40 participants with a time of 14:00.20. Guor Marial of Iowa State University finished second with a time of 14:06.76, while Kiel Uhl of Iowa State University placed fourth in 14:08.56 and Jeff Schirmer of Southern Illinois State University fifth in 14:11.60.

Kaul Sets Conference Record At Iowa Meet
Willy Kaul (Sr. • Menomonee Falls) recorded the fastest indoor 5,000-meter run time in both UW-Oshkosh and WIAC history when he finished third in the event at the Iowa State University Track and Field Classic held Friday and Saturday (Feb. 13-14) in Ames, Iowa.
Kaul ran to a time of 14:07.14, with his nation-leading performance surpassing the automatic qualifying standard for next month’s NCAA Division III Indoor Championship in Terre Haute, Ind. His effort would’ve eclipsed the provisional qualifying standard for the NCAA Division I Championship.
Blake Boldon of the Boulder Running Club won the race of 40 participants with a time of 14:00.20. Guor Marial of Iowa State University finished second with a time of 14:06.76, while Kiel Uhl of Iowa State University placed fourth in 14:08.56 and Jeff Schirmer of Southern Illinois State University fifth in 14:11.60.
Kaul was the lone UW-Oshkosh competitor at the non-scoring meet.

Titans Win Five Events At UW-Platteville Invitational
  The UW-Oshkosh men’s indoor track and field team produced five first-place performances to highlight its day at the non-scoring UW-Platteville Invitational on Saturday (Feb. 14) in Platteville.
UW-Oshkosh was led by first-place results by A.J. Hollanquest (Sr. • Wausau) in the 400-meter dash in a time of 50.43, Andrew McGuire (Sr. • Wisconsin Rapids) in the one-mile run in a time of 4:17.35, Nate Stymiest (Fr. • Oconto Falls) in the 3,000-meter run in a time of 8:39.07, Alan German (Fr. • West Bend) in the long jump with a leap of 21-8 and James Simms (Jr. • Fredonia) in the triple jump with a mark of 47-4 ½.
Grabbing runner-up performances for the Titans were Sean Kutz (Fr. • Grantsburg) in the 3,000-meter run in a time of 8:44.34 and Pete Wheiland (Fr. • Slinger) in the shot put with a fling of 51-1.
UW-Oshkosh enjoyed third-place results from Ben Zill (Jr. • New Franken) in the 400-meter dash in a time of 50.69, Nick Katsandonis (Sr. • Menasha) in the 55-meter hurdles in a time of 7.97 and Andrew Stephany (So. • Kimberly) in the 35-pound weight throw with a launch of 55-9.
The Titans also got a third-place finish in the 1,600-meter relay in a time of 3:25.36.
UW-Oshkosh’s lone fourth-place result went to Andrew Vos (Jr. • Fort Atkinson) in the 3,000-meter run in a time of 8:47.16.
Landing fifth-place performances for the Titans included Ben Wizner (So. • Onalaska) in the one-mile run in a time of 4:22.99 and Adam Leib (Fr. • Oshkosh) in the long jump with a distance of 21-1 ½.
Sixth-place results for UW-Oshkosh went to Zak Schmidt (Sr. • New Berlin) in the pole vault with a height of 14-7 ¼, Simms in the long jump with a mark of 20-10 ¾, Ross Helein (Fr. • De Pere) in the shot put with a fling of 46-0 ½ and Ben Ludtke (Fr. • Lyons) in the 35-pound weight throw with a toss of 52-6 ½. |
Titans One Point Shy Of Warhawk Classic Title
  UW-Oshkosh won seven events and captured second place in the team standings with 164.5 points at the Warhawk Men's Track and Field Classic held Friday (Feb. 6) in Whitewater.
The Titans were a mere one point behind host UW-Whitewater which finished in first place with 165.5 points.
Rounding out the top five finishes in the eight-team meet were third-place North Central College (Ill) with 114.5 points, fourth-place University of Chicago (Ill.) with 80.5 and fifth-place Augustana College (Ill.) with 71.
Taking first-place for UW-Oshkosh included Brent Jude (Jr. • Milwaukee) in the 55-meter dash in a time of 6.51, A.J. Hollanquest (Sr. • Wausau) in the 200-meter dash in a time of 22.66, Willy Kaul (Sr. • Menomonee Falls) in the one-mile run in a time of 4:12.46, James Simms (Jr. • Fredonia) in the triple jump with a leap of 46-10, Pete Wheiland (Fr. • Slinger) in the shot put with a heave of 50-8, Andrew Stephany (So. • Kimberly) in the 35-pound weight throw with a toss of 56-5 ¾ and Ben Zill (Jr. • New Franken) in the pentathlon with 3,576 points.
Capturing second-place for the Titans were Nick Katsandonis (Sr. • Menasha) in the 55-meter hurdles in a time of 7.80, Hollanquest in the 55-meter dash in a time of 6.59 and Alan German (Fr. • West Bend) in the long jump with a distance of 22-2 ½.
The 800-meter relay also tallied a runner-up performance in a time of 1:31.88.
Third-place marks for UW-Oshkosh consisted of Chad Churchill (Sr. • Sheboygan) in the 55-meter dash in a time of 6.64 and Jason Ulman (Fr. • Appleton) in the pentathlon with 2,886 points.
Jude recorded the Titans’ lone fourth-place performance in the 200-meter dash in a time of 23.05.
Enjoying fifth-place results for the Titans included Andrew McGuire (Sr. • Wisconsin Rapids) in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 14:56.33, Jared Morris (Jr. • Wausau) in the 800-meter dash in a time of 1:57.41, Churchill in the 200-meter dash in a time of 23.07, Ulman in the high jump with a mark of 5-10 and Zill in the triple jump with a leap of 44-1 ¼.
UW-Oshkosh benefited from sixth-place achievements from Shane Diederichs (Fr. • Manitowoc) in the 200-meter dash in a time of 23.11, Justin Darrow (Jr. • Sobieski) in the 3,000-meter run in a time of 9:04.17 and Tony Baker (So. • Oshkosh) in the 35-pound weight throw with a launch of 52-4.

Three Titans Throw At Badger Track Classic
The UW-Oshkosh men’s indoor track and field team posted fourth-place showings from both Andrew Stephany (So. • Kimberly) and Pete Wheiland (Fr. • Slinger) in the Badger Track Classic held on Friday and Saturday (Jan. 16-17) in Madison.
Stephany tallied a fourth-place showing in the weight throw after a toss of 54-0. Southern Illinois University’s Scott Block took the top spot with a heave of 61-8 1/4, followed in second by Marquette’s Jeff Kluge at 56-9 1/2 and Rory Linder in third at 54-6. Tony Baker (So. • Oshkosh) took seventh place in the nine-man field with a launch of 49-9 1/4.
Wheiland sent the shot put a distance of 48-4 1/2 to capture fourth place out of 16 throwers. That event’s winner was also Block at 55-11 1/4, while Wisconsin’s Jake Fritz earned second with a toss of 52-10 1/4. Jacob Daily finished in third after a launch of 49-3 3/4.
No team scores were kept in the meet.

Jordan Named WIAC Field Athlete Of The Week
UW-Oshkosh's Jonathan Jordan (Fr. • Milwaukee) won the long jump at the UW-Oshkosh Invitational held Jan. 23 to earn one of the WIAC's Men's Track and Field Athlete of the Week awards.
Jordan was named as the league's top field performer for meets held Jan. 19-25. The conference's top track citation went to Aron Kehoe of UW-Whitewater.
Jordan leaped 23-4 3/4 to edge eight other contestants in the long jump competition. His performance also surpassed the provisional qualifying standard for the 2009 NCAA Division III Indoor Championship.
UW-Oshkosh won the five-team meet with 227.33 points. North Central College (Ill.) finished second with 189.33 points, while Ripon College placed third with 37.33, UW-Parkside fourth with 14 and Benedictine University (Ill.) fifth with 6. |
Titans Post Another Strong Outing
  The UW-Oshkosh men’s track and field team won 10 events, including a record-setting performance in the 3,000-meter run, to capture the UW-Oshkosh Invitational on Friday (Jan. 23) in Kolf Sports Center.
UW-Oshkosh tallied 227.33 points to outpace runner-up North Central College (Ill.) with 189.33. Ripon College followed in third-place with 37.33 points, UW-Parkside in fourth-place with 14 and Benedictine University (Ill.) in fifth-place with six.
Similar to their first meet of the season, the Titans used balanced scoring and depth to accumulate their points during the meet.
Willy Kaul (Sr. • Menomonee Falls) set a new UW-Oshkosh record in the 3,000-meter run in a time of 8:16.36. The previous record of 8:21.06 was held by John LeRoy, a mark he set in 2005.
Also winning events for UW-Oshkosh were Jordan Jonathan (Fr. • Milwaukee) in the 55-meter dash in a time of 6.47 and the long jump with a mark of 23-4 ¾, Nick Katsandonis (Sr. • Menasha) in the 55-meter hurdles in a time of 7.88, Nate Stymiest (Fr. • Oconto Falls) in the one-mile run in a time of 4:21.23, James Simms (Jr. • Fredonia) in the triple jump with a result of 46-3 ¼, Andrew Stephany (So. • Kimberly) in the 35-pound weight throw with a toss of 53-3 ½ and Pete Wheiland (Fr. • Slinger) in the shot put with a heave of 48-11 ½.
The Titans also won both relay events with winning times of 1:30.58 in the 800-meter relay and 3:23.65 in the 1,600-meter relay.

Titans Clear Season-Opening Hurdle
 UW-Oshkosh opened its 2009 men's indoor track and field season with a 95.5-73.5 victory over the University of Chicago on Saturday (Jan. 10) in Chicago, Ill.
The Titans
won 10 of the 16 events, including all three jumping and both throwing competitions.
James Simms (Jr. • Fredonia) earned top honors in the high jump with a leap of 6-3 1/2 and the triple jump with a distance of 47-5 3/4. Jonathan Jordan (Fr. • Milwaukee) added to those efforts by winning the long jump with a mark of 22-5 1/4.
UW-Oshkosh's
listings in the throws were led by Pete Wheiland’s (Fr. • Slinger) toss of 49-4 1/4 in the shot put and Andrew Stephany’s (So. • Kimberly) fling of 53-7 3/4 in the 35-pound weight throw.
Other first-place finishes went to the Titans' Shane Diederichs (Fr. • Manitowoc) in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.64, A.J. Hollanquest (Sr. • Wausau) in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.08, Nate Stymiest (Fr. • Oconto Falls) in the mile run with a time of 4:22.47 and Andrew McGuire (Sr. • Wisconsin Rapids) in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15.44.52.
UW-Oshkosh earned a victory in the 1,600-meter relay as Hollanquest, Nick Katsandonis (Sr. • Menasha), Jared Morris (Jr. • Wausau) and Ben Zill (Jr. • New Franken) ran to a time of 3:29.27.
Zill added a pair of second-place finishes by posting a time of 8.16 in the 55-meter hurdles and a mark of 20-5 3/4 in the long jump. He also placed fourth in the high jump with a height of 6-1 1/2.
Additional second-place finishes went to UW-Oshkosh's Morris in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:59.08, Tony Baker (So. • Oshkosh) in the 35-pound weight throw with a heave of 50-0 3/4, Geoff Gundlach (Sr. • Middleton) in the mile run with a time of 4:23.60, Ross Helein (Fr. • De Pere) in the shot put with a toss of 44-3 3/4, Chris Lipke (So. • Wautoma) in the 400-meter run with a time of 52.52, Tom O’Connor (So. • Clintonville) in the pole vault with a height of 13-4 1/2, Jason Ulman (Fr. • Appleton) in the high jump with a leap of 6-3 1/2 and Andrew Vos (Jr. • Fort Atkinson) in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:56.78.
Katsandonis earned a pair of third-place finishes by running to times of 8.28 in the 55-meter hurdles and 23.56 in the 200-meter dash.
Also finishing third were Baker in the shot put with a toss of 43-11 3/4, Jordan in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.67, O’Connor in the long jump with a mark of 19-4 3/4, Jared Johnson (Fr. • Hortonville) in the pole vault with a height of 12-10 3/4, Dan Rammer (Fr. • Appleton) in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:00.44 and Scott Ryman (Fr. • Belvidere, Ill.) in the high jump after a leap of 6-1 1/2.
