This marks Kaul's second indoor track and field national championship after winning the distance medley relay in 2007.

Titans Take Third At WIAC Championship

Brent Jude Willy Kaul Phil Prusinski Ben Zill

The UW-Oshkosh men's track team has two indoor meets that they try and peak for, the conference and national championships. Every meet strategically leads up to these two events. The Titan athletes do everything in their power to be in peak performance at this time of the year.

The first of these two meets, the WIAC conference championship, was held this past weekend (February 29 and March 1) in Superior, WI. The Titans, as a team, placed third with 104.50 points. Only 4.5 points seperated third place from fifth place. UW-Lacrosse won the meet with 137.50 points, UW-Whitewater was second with 125 points, the Titans were third, and UW-Plateville and UW-Stevens Point finished fourth and fifth with 101.50 and 100 points, respectively.

Distance runner Willy Kaul had an amazing meet as he scored 20 points for the Titans. He won both the 5000-meter and 3000-meter runs. He displaced a powerful kick on Friday to beat UW-Plateville runner Tyler Sigl for the 5000 meter crown. His finishing time was 14:43.73, a provisional qualifying time. The next day Kaul came back to win the 3000-meter run with a time of 8:37.95.

The 3000 and 5000-meter run went well for other Titan athletes as well. Andrew McGuire placed third in both events, and Andrew Vos placed sixth in both. McGuire's time in the 5000-meter run was 14:59.65, while Vos's was 15:03.97. The next day, McGuire's time in the 3000-meter run was 8:41.01, and Vos's was 8:44.81. Nick Sydow also scored for the Titans in the 3000-meter run. He placed eighth and his finishing time was 8:45.24.

James Simms and Ben Zill also had incredible performances at the conference championships. James Simms won the triple jump, with a jump of 47-4 1/4, which is a provisional qualifying jump, and the best jump of his indoor career.

Zill also did well in the triple jump. He finished third with a jump of 54-10 1/2. Aside from the triple jump, Zill placed sixth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.51, and seventh in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.13. Nick

Katsondonis led the Titan performers in the 55-meter hurdles, though, finishing fifth with a time of 7.88. Simms placed in the high jump as well. His jump of 6-5 placed him third. Billy Klitz also scored points for the Titans in the high jump. He finished sixth with a jump of 6-3 1/4.

Phil Prusinski topped the conference in the weight throw. He continued an incredibly season with a throw of 56-09 1/2, which is a provisionally qualifying throw.

Brent Jude came back strong from a hamstring injury that has been nagging him in recent weeks to finish fifth in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.55.

Joe Dillon completed a busy weekend with a seventh place performance in the heptathalon. His total score from the event was 4208.

The Titan 1600-meter relay team placed fifth with a time of 3:24.11, while the 800-meter relay and the distance medley relay teams finished in sixth place with times of 1:32.64 and 10:37.76, respectively.

Titans Fourth At UW-Stevens Point Invitational

Brent Jude Billy Klitz Alan Ruiz Nick Sydow

The UW-Oshkosh Titans used their meet in Stevens Point on Saturday, February 23, as a tune-up for the Conference meet, which will be held next weekend at UW-Superior; therefore,Coach John Zupanc used this meet to sharpen his athletes physical and mental tools for the upcoming championship season. That's not to say, though, that there weren't numerous seasonal bests throughout the meet.

Despite holding certain competitors out of their normal events, the Titans still managed to finish in fourth place as a team. In the sixteen team meet, UW-Stevens Point came away with the victory. They scored 165.5 points, and were followed by UW-Plateville with 102.5, UW-Eau Claire with 88, UW-Oshkosh with 71.50, and Carroll College with 57.5.

UW-Oshkosh's scoring was led by the their provisonally qualifying distance medley relay team. Although their time of 10:02.31 doesn't automatically qualify them for the national meet, it should be fast enough to get them in regardless. The team consisted of Nathan Boehlke in the 1200 leg, Ben Zill in the 400, Jared Morris in the 800, and Andrew McGuire in the mile. The race was neck and neck throughout between UW-Oshkosh, UW-Stevens Point, and St. Thomas, but McGuire managed to outsprint the other milers in the last 50-meters by less than a second. St. Thomas finished third, but still ran a qualifying time of 10:03.10 in the thrilling event.

Nick Katsandonis continues to excel in the 55-meter hurdles. This weekend he finished second in the event with a time of 7.96.

Billy Klitz jumped a seasonal best in the high jump when he jumped 6-6. His mark was high enough to place him second in the event. James Sims also scored in the event with a sixth place finish. His highest jump was 6-2.

Nick Sydow continues to improve in each race this season. He ran a seasonal best in the 5000-meter run. His time of 15:17.21 placed him third.

The 1600-meter relay continues to drop their best seasonal time. This week they ran 3:21.26 and placed fourth. The team consisted of Ben Zill, Jared Morris, Nate Heard, and Kevin Lofy.

Alan Ruiz tied his seasonal best in the pole vault with a vault of 14-7 1/2. The vault was high enough to place him fourth in the event.

Phil Prusinski continues to lead the way for the Titans in the weight throw. He threw another provisional qualifying mark, 54-7 1/2, which placed him fifth in the event. Sam Qiltzius also scored in the event, finish seventh with a throw of 50-11. Brian Hartwig placed in the shotput with a throw of 43-1 1/2, good enough for seventh place.

Chad Churchill placed in both sprinting events. He finished fifth in the 55-meter dash, when he ran 6.58, and sixth in the 200-meter dash, running 23.02.

The 400-meter dash saw two Titans perform well. Both Scott Michel and Chris Lipke ran seasonal bests in the sprint. Michel placed fifth with a time of 50.50, and Lipke finished eighth with a time of 51.21.

Aside from the high jump, Sims also scored in the long jump. He finished sixth when he jumped 20-7 1/2.

Bobby Gibson managed to run a personal best in the 800-meter run. His time of 1:59.12 placed him seventh.

Titans Champion of Own Invitational

Phik Prusinski Alan Ruiz Jared Sanchez Sam Wiltzius

The WIAC and NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships are two-day extravaganza that can wear on an athlete both physically and mentally.

UW-Oshkosh prepped for these two events this past weekend as they had a meet on Friday (Feb. 15) in Whitewater, and then came home on Saturday (Feb. 16) to host an 11-team invitational. UW-Oshkosh dominated the field on Saturday, scoring 205 points. St. Norbert College was second with 138 points.

Phil Prusinski capped an impressive weekend by taking home first place in the weight throw. His throw of 55-09.75 eclipsed the field. Phil led the way in the event for the Titans, but three other teammates were right behind him in the standings. Sam Wiltzius, Andrew Stephany, and Kyle Lange finished second, third, and fourth respectively. Tony Baker rounded out the Titans scoring in the event by finishing seventh.

Prusinski and Wiltzius also performed well in the shot put. Wiltzius finished fifth with a throw of 43-06.50, and Prusinski was close behind with a throw of 42-08.00, which was good enough for sixth place.

The pole vault was another deep event for the Titans as four UW-Oshkosh competitors scored. Alan Ruiz led the field with a vault of 14-05.25. Zak Schmidt and Tyler Walsh vaulted well enough to finish third and fourth. Tom O'Connor also scored for the Titans with a jump of 12-05.50 that placed him sixth.

Billy Klitz and James Simms continue to be consistent mainstays at the top of the field events. After a second place finish the night before in Whitewater, Klitz managed to win the high jump on Saturday with a jump of 6-04.00. Simms, taking a break from his best event, the triple jump, jumped 6-04.00 and finished third.

After a solid performance in the 5000 the night before, Andrew Vos came back on Saturday and won the 3000 in a relaxed manner with a time of 9:01.07. Adam Zamzow was right behind Vos, finishing third, with a time of 9:12.05. Jon Simon held on to score for the Titans. He finished in sixth place, after running 9:20.81.

Another individual victory for the Titans came in the 55-meter hurdles. This time Jared Sanchez led the field with a time of 8.19.

The Titans young 1600-meter relay team took home victory with a time of 3:28.82. Other Titan relay teams performed well as the 800-meter relay team and the distance medley relay team took home second place finishes. The 800-meter relay team ran 1:34.87 and the distance medley relay team ran 10:21.68.

UW-Oshkosh dominated the 200 meter dash. Grand Grandlich led the Titans scoring in the event, finishing second with a time of 23.58. Three other Titans scored in the event. Scott Michel, Kevin Lofy, and Jared Morris finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively.

In the 400 meter dash, Chris Lipke ran a 2-second personal best. He finished in second place after he ran 51.65. Luke Rebholz also placed in the event when he ran 52.60, which placed him sixth.

David Edwards took the 800 meter run out hard, and managed to hang on and finish second in the event with a time of 2:00.77. Teammate Justin Darrow was close behind him, finishing third in 2:00.93. Tim Schneider rounded out the scoring in the event after running 2:07.46, and placed eighth.

Ben Brunner also finished as a runner-up in the mile. His time of 4:24.93 was a significant personal best. Teammate Nick Sydow finished an impressive weekend with a third place finish in the event. His time was 4:26.69.

Two Titan sprinters, Adam Sonntag and Taylor Ness, rounded out the Titans scoring in the 55-meter dash. They finished third and sixth with times of 6.79 and 6.93 respectively.

Titans Take Third At Warhawk Classic

Brent Jude Willy Kaul Phil Prusinski Ben Zill

The focus for the UW-Oshkosh men's track and field team at Friday's (Feb. 15) Warhawk Classic in Whitewater, was on personal improvement, and a number of men came through in different areas.

Willy Kaul led the way in the 5,000-meter run with an automatic qualifying time of 14:22.99. This effort is the second fastest time in the nation at the 5,000-meter distance run in the indoor season thus far.

Kaul dominated a field that saw four racers run under the automatic qualifying standard of 14:33.00, and two more run under the provisional standard of 14:55.00. One of those provisional standards was ran by Andrew McGuire of the Titans, who finished in sixth place with a time of 14:49.47. This is a big personal best for McGuire, but it's likely that he'll have to run faster to run in national meet. Kaul's race firmly places him as one of the favorites in the 5000 heading into the championship season.

On a day that UW-Oshkosh men's track and field coach John Zupanc concentrated more on personal bests rather than team scoring, the Titans teams still managed to finish third against two of the top teams in the country, UW-Whitewater and UW-La Crosse.

UW-Whitewater led the way in the seven team field with 187 points. UW-La Crosse followed Whitewater with 132
points and UW-Oshkosh finished third, with 106 points.

The Titans had one other individual winner on Friday night and it came in the weight throw. Phil Prusinski had another masterful performance, as he defeated a strong field with a throw of 57-05 3/4. This throw was well beyond the provisional standard of 54-4 3/4, and is a large improvement over his personal throws from the past two meets. Prusinski currently sits among the top ten throwers in the nation in the weight throw.

UW-Oshkosh's 800-meter relay came through with essential points for the Titans. They managed to win the event with a time of 1:31.10.

In previous weeks, the triple jump continued to be a critical event for the Titans. James Simms finished as the runner-up on Friday with a jump of 47-03 1/2. This jump marks the second straight week that Simms has set a personal best in the event and is a provisional qualifying mark, and inches him closer to the automatic qualifying mark of 48-0 1/2. Like Prusinski, Simms is among the top ten competitors in the nation in the triple jump. Ben Zill closely followed Simms in the event with a jump of 45-08 1/2, which placed him fourth in the event.

Billy Klitz continues to amass points for the Titans in the high jump. For the second straight week he placed second in the event, this time with a jump of 6-2.

The 3,000 meter race, like the 5,000, was a strong event for UW-Oshkosh. Nick Sydow took the lead late in the race and held on to finish second with a time of 8:51.67. Josh Hoff took the race out at a formidable pace, and still managed to run 9:11.46, which put him at seventh place.

Brent Jude continues to be a solid competitor for the Titans week in and week out. Jude finished second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.92 despite pulling a hamstring in the last 10 meters of the race. Earlier in the meet he placed fourth in the 55 meter dash with a time of 6.55. Chad Churchill followed him closely across the line with a time of 6.67, which was good enough to place him sixth.

The 55 meter hurdles went better for the Titans than most expected. Nick Katsandonis ran outstanding as he improved his personal best in the event when he finished with a time of 7.86 seconds. Katsandonis finished in third place, and was followed by teammate Ben Zill, who managed to round out the scoring in the hurdles with an eighth place finish.

After a slow start to the 800 meter race, Nathan Boehlke was still able to race across the finish line in a time of 1:57.31, which placed him fourth in the event. William Koepp followed him in eight place, after running a personal best of 1:58.37.

Battling sickness, the Titan 1600 meter relay competed as best they could to finish in fifth place, with a time of 3:24.81. Alan Ruiz also finished fifth place Friday night, but he did so in the pole vault with a jump of 14-6.

Rounding out the Titan scoring was Joe Dillon in the long jump. He slipped into eighth place with a jump of 20-7 3/4.

The Warhawk Classic saw a lot of Titan competitors qualify for the national meet, and gain a lot of personal bests. It was a good start to a long weekend for the Titans, who host a meet in Oshkosh the day after the Classic. After this weekend, the Titans should have a great deal more experience to lead them to top performances in the upcoming championship season.

Titans Finish Second At UW-Stevens Point Invitational

Brent Jude Nick Katsandonis Andrew McGuire Ben Zill

After celebrating victories against lesser competition in their first two meets of the indoor track season, the UW-Oshkosh Titans went into the UW-Stevens Point Stevens Point to face tougher competition than they've, thus far, been used to.

The Titans couldn't topple the Pointers on their home track, but a lot of individuals improved their performances in preparation for the WIAC Conference meet. UW-Stevens Point led the way with 164 points, and UW-Oshkosh was close behind with 144. The University of Minnesota-Duluth ended up third with 108.5 points. Although the second place finish may have been a disappointment to a lot of the Titans, the experience the Titan competitors gained in central Wisconsin will go a long way towards team success for the rest of the indoor season.

Brent Jude led the way for the Titans in the sprints against tough competition. He finished second the in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.56, only .02 seconds behind UW-Stevens Point sprinter Keith Ingram. Jude followed his second-place performance with a fifth place finish in the 200-meter dash. His time of 22.89 was .15 seconds behind Keith Ingram who won his second race of the day.

Chad Churchill and Adam Sonntag rounded out a strong showing by the Titan sprinters in the 55-meter dash, by finishing sixth (6.72) and eighth (6.78), respectively. Nate Heard also performed well in the 200-meter dash. He finished in seventh place, close behind Jude, with a time of 23.06.

In the hurdles, Nick Katsandonis came through with a solid third-place performance. His time of 7.96 was only .21 seconds behind winner Seth Urtel from the University of Minnesota-Duluth. Jared Sanchez gained some valuable experience by scoring for the Titans. He stumbled early, yet still managed to finish and ended up in eighth place with a time of 10.51.

The 400-meter dash was a success for the Titans, as runners Ben Zill and Kevin Lofy came through with some surprising performances. Provisional qualifying for the 400-meter dash is 49.90, and Zill managed to dip under that mark with a time of 49.59. It was a personal-best for Zill. Zill was fired up after a disappointing performance in the 55-meter hurdles. It's safe to say that, although his hurdles didn't go as he had planned, he more than made up for that with his qualifying standard. Kevin Lofy also ran tough to finish with a time of 50.93. The time was good enough for seventh place in a tough field.

Jared Morris enjoyed a good performance in the 800-meter run. While still learning the fine points of the half-mile distance, Morris managed to finish third to a strong competitor in UW-Stevens Point runner Greg Haak. Morris finished with a very impressive last lap to run a time of 1:55.93, one second behind Haak.

The Titans had a great showing in the mile-run with three runners scoring. Andrew McGuire took over the lead at the half-mile and held on for a big victory. His time of 4:16.78 is close to the provisional mark of 4:16.00 which he'll try to eclipse in the coming weeks. Andrew Vos kicked home strong to finish in third place with a time of 4:21.51.

Nathan Boehlke finished close behind Vos with a time of 4:24.68, which was good enough for sixth place.

Like McGuire, Willy Kaul came through for the Titans with a first-place performance in the 3000-meters. Kaul looked powerful, yet relaxed while finishing with a time of 8:39.61. It's Kaul's second straight win at the 3000-meter distance in as many races. Nick Sydow also scored for the Titans in the event with a time 9:00.65, which was good enough for seventh place.

The UW-Oshkosh relay team's managed to gain some critical points in both the 800-meter relay and the 1600-meter relay. A young 800-meter relay squad made up of Chase Morgan, Taylor Ness, Tyler Schmidt and Andrew Stendahl gained valuable experience by finishing fourth in the 800-meter relay with a time of 1:36.97. The 1,600-meter relay team made up of Ben Zill, Jared Morris, Scott Michel and Kevin Lofy finished second to UW-Stevens Point with a time of 3:21.56.

The jumping events provided points in different areas. James Simm's performance in the triple jump was huge for the Titans. His jump of 46-8 3/4 crushed the provisional standard of 45-11 1/4. He easily finished in first place, and the jump should be enough to get him into nationals, but he'll continue to try to eclipse this mark in the coming weeks. Billy Klitz came through as usual for the Titans in the high jump. He finished in second place with a jump 6-3 1/4. Chris Lipke jumped well enough for sixth place in the long jump. His longest jump was good enough for 20-7. Like Lipke, Zach Schmidt finished sixth in the pole vault with a jump of 14-1 3/4.

Phil Prusinski and Sam Wiltzius both placed well in the weight throw. Prusinski continues to better the provisional mark of 55-7 each and every week that he throws. His throw of 55-7 was good enough for second place. Wiltzius' throw of 50-11 3/4 earned him fifth place.
