McKenna Named Verizon Academic All-America

Eamon McKennaEamon McKenna of the UW-Oshkosh men's cross country and track and field teams has been named to the 2002 Verizon College Division Academic All-America Men's Track and Field/Cross Country Team. McKenna, a first-time honoree, was a second team selection.

The College Division of the Verizon Academic All-America Men's Track & Field/Cross Country Teams includes schools belonging to the NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III or the NAIA.

McKenna, a junior from Ashippun, owns a 3.95 cumulative grade point average as a major in both elementary education and Spanish. McKenna has recorded nine varsity letters during his three years at UW-Oshkosh, three each in the sports of cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field. McKenna was a member of UW-Oshkosh's 2001 indoor track and field team that claimed the WIAC title.

This past year, McKenna placed eighth in the 5,000 meter run at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship, 12th in the 10,000 meter run at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championship and 46th at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championship. He also placed second in the 5,000 and 10,000 meter runs at the 2002 WIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Verizon Academic All-America program, which was founded by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) in 1952 to recognize collegiate student-athletes for their outstanding achievements in the classroom and on the playing field. Over the past 50 years, the Verizon Academic All-America program has grown into one of the most recognized and prestigious collegiate scholar-athlete awards in the country.

The Verizon Academic All-America Teams are selected by a vote of the 1,800-member CoSIDA. To be eligible, an athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve and maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.20 on a scale of 4.00.

Since the inception of the Verizon Academic All-America Program, 26 UW-Oshkosh student-athletes have combined for 34 awards, including four-time honoree Laura Nelson in women's track and field/cross country. In WIAC listings, UW-Oshkosh ranks second to the 35 Verizon Academic All-America mentions totaled by UW-La Crosse.

Titans Place 14th at NCAA Nationals

Matt GrooseLed by junior Matt Grooose’s All-American victory in the 800-meter run, the UW-Oshkosh men’s track & field team placed 13th at the 2002 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championship, hosted by Macalester College.

Groose’s time of 1 minute 50.05 seconds broke the Macalaster Stadium record of 1:50.35 that he set in the first qualifying heat. In March, he posted a time of 1:49.73 to win the NCAA Indoor Championship, and won the same event at the Drake Relays with a time of 1:50.14.

The top eight finishers in each event qualify for All-American status.

Sophomore Chris Jensen finished third in the discus, posting a distance of 166 feet-three inches. Mike Turgeon of UW-La Crosse won the event with a throw of 183-2, setting a season-high for D-III and a new Macalester Stadium record.

Sophomore Jon Wagner’s seventh place finish in the pole vault made him the third Titan All-American of the meet. Wagner hit a mark of 15-7, a mark shared by Adam Teunisssen of UW-Platteville and Ben Stern of UW-La Crosse.

Also earning points for the Titans were a pair of 10K runners; freshman Nick Boehlke and junior Eamon McKenna.

Boehlke took 11th place with a time of 31:34.94 while McKenna came in 10.01 seconds later for 12th place.

The Titans finished with 18 team points to tie Ohio Wesleyan for 13th place. Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foes UW-La Crosse and UW-Stevens Point finished with 62 and 31 points, respectively, sandwiching Calvin College (41 points) for the top three spots in the final standings. Wheaton College and UW-Platteville rounded out the top five.

A total of 71 schools scored points in the event.

Groose Wins 800 Meter Run At Drake Relays

Matt GrooseJunior Matt Groose of the UW-Oshkosh men's track and field team won the Invitational 800 meter run on Saturday (April 27) at the prestigious Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.

Groose, who won the 800 meter run at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship in March with a record time of 1:49.73, ran to a first-place time of 1:50.14 on Saturday to outdistance a field of 11 invited participants.

Finishing second to Groose with a time of 1:50.51 was defending champion Derrick Peterson of The Adidas Track Club. Peterson captured the 800 meter run title at the United States Indoor Track and Field Championship in March with a time of 1:46.60 and holds the American collegiate indoor record of 1:45.88, set at the 1999 NCAA Division I Track and Field Championship. Peterson also won the Invitational 800 meter run at the 1998 Drake Relays while competing for the University of Missouri. In 2001, Peterson won a silver medal in the 800 meter run at the World University Games in Beijing, China.

Rounding out the finishes in the Invitational 800 meter run were third-place Ian Searcy of Central Michigan University (1:50.95), fourth-place James Karanu (1:51.18), fifth-place Timothy of the University of Missouri (1:52.07), sixth-place Joseph Lee of Kansas State University (1:52.92), seventh-place Eddie Nehus of the Indiana Invaders Track Club (1:53.36), eighth-place Eric Potter (1:53.66), ninth-place Chevazz Brown of the University of Georgia (1:54.22), 10th-place Matt Byington (1:54.61) and 11th-place Trinity Townsend of the New Balance Track Club (1:56.02).

Groose, a Watertown native, also bettered the winning 800 meter run time in the University and College Division at the Drake Relays. Ryan Huber of Indiana University won that race with a time of 1:51.68.

UW-Oshkosh also recorded a 14th-place finish in the distance medley relay of the Men's College Division at the Drake Relays. Representing the Titans and posting a time of 10:15.87 were John LeRoy, Tim Kluge, Pat Seger and Nick Boehlke. Central Missouri State University won the event with a time of 9:55.84.

Titans Finish Fifth At NCAA Indoor Championship

An impressive nine records were broken during the 2002 NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships held Friday and Saturday (March 8-9) at the Ohio Northern University Sports Center in Ada, Ohio.

The UW-La Crosse men and the Wheaton College (Mass.) women successfully defended their team titles from a year ago.

In the men's meet, UW-La Crosse scored 54 points to win their second straight and ninth title overall in the 18-year history of the event. Lincoln University (Pa.) was second with 48 points, Montclair State University (N.J.) third with 29 points, Wheaton College (Mass.) fourth with 27 points and UW-Oshkosh fith with 26.

Wheaton College (Mass.) won its fourth straight women's title by amassing 65.5 points, just missing the Championships record of 66 points by Christopher Newport University (Va.) in 1988.

UW-Oshkosh was second with 37 points, UW-La Crosse third with 30.5 points, Williams College (Mass.) fourth with 29 points and Carthage College fifth with 24 points.

Individually on the women's side, Wheaton College's (Mass.) Shimera Daniels set two NCAA Division III records, winning the triple jump with a distance of 12.62 meters and the long jump with a jump of 5.96 meters.

Her teammate, Amber James, set a record in the 400 meter ash with a time of 55.46 seconds and combined with Niara Woods, Tessa Donoghue and April Butler on Wheaton College's 4 x 400 relay team that won in 3:48.78.

Nebraska Wesleyan University's Kelly Bowen won the pole vault by clearing an NCAA rDivision III record 3.77 meters.

In the men's competition, Jeremy Scott of Allegheny College (Pa.), Andrew Rock of UW-La Crosse and Matt Groose of UW-Oshkosh all set NCAA Division III records in individual events and the Haverford College (Pa.) medley relay team also set an NCAA Division III Championships mark.

Scott won the pole vault by clearing 5.50 meters, Rock won the 400-meter dash in 47.47 seconds and Groose won the 800-meter run in 1:49.73. Haverford College's relay team finished in 9:58.53.

In addition to Groose's first-place finish in the 800 meter run, the UW-Oshkosh men's team also received a third-place finish from David Cisewski in the 5,000 meter run (14:41.82), eighth-place finish from Kirk DeWindt in the 1,500 meter run and an eighth-place finish from Eamon McKenna in the 5,000 meter run (14:54.25). The Titans' distance medley relay team of Cisewski, Groose, John LeRoy and Steve Wagner finished second with a time of 9:59.52.

UW-Oshkosh's women's team received a first-place finish from Carrie Danielewicz in the high jump (5-7 1/4), first-place finish from Elizabeth Woodworth in the 800 meter run (2:12.41), sixth-place finish from Jessica Marx in the 800 meter run (2:15.73), seventh-place finish from Jill Kincaid in the triple jump (37-10 1/2) and a seventh-place finish from Niki Riemer in the pole vault (11-4 1/2). The Titans' distance medley relay team of Susan Hardtke, Marx, Jackie Munoz and Woodworth also finished first with a time of 11:46.19.

A total of 16 Ohio Northern University Sports Center records were broken during the event.

Titans Finish Third At WIAC Indoor Championship

Matt GrooseJohn LeRoyThe University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's indoor track & field team won its 27th Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) championship in school history Saturday in Kachel Fieldhouse. The Eagles, who have now won 11 of the last 13 team titles, finished with 163.50 points. UW-Whitewater was second (103.00) followed by UW-Oshkosh (101.00), UW-Stevens Point (101.00), UW-Eau Claire (92.00), UW-Platteville (75.50) and UW-Stout (60.00).

La Crosse had five individual champions and one relay champion during the two-day event. Dan Tutskey captured the 55-meter dash for the second consecutive season with a conference record time of 6.34, while Andrew Rock won the 200-meter dash in 21.45. Rock, who also won the event last season, established a new conference record in the 200-meter dash with his effort.

In field events, Andrew Basler won the long jump for the second time in his career with a leap of 24-4 1/2. Jim Nelson claimed the shot put title with a throw of 55-1, while Mike Turgeon captured the 35-pound weight throw title with a distance of 60-9 1/4.

The La Crosse 4x200-meter relay team captured the conference crown for the third consecutive season with a time of 1:28.02.

Whitewater's Pat Frascone claimed the 5,000-meter run title with a time of 14:36.19 becoming the first Warhawk in school history to win a WIAC title in the event. Adam Lendowski won the heptathlon title with 4,909 points. His point total established a new conference record.

Oshkosh had three individuals and one relay team claim conference crowns. Matt Groose won the 800-meter run with a conference record time of 1:50.03, while David Cisewski won the 3,000-meter run in 8:28.12. Kevin Deering won the high jump with a mark of 6-8, while the distance medley relay team won with a time of 9:56.38. This marks the third consecutive season Oshkosh has won the distance medley relay crown.

Stout's Dave Hanson won the 400-meter dash and 55-meter high hurdles titles. He claimed the 400-meter crown in 49.51 and the 55-meter hurdle title in 7.71. Jeff Rotering won the pole vault with a height of 16-3 1/4. Stout's 4x400-meter relay team claimed the WIAC title with a time of 3:22.95.

Eau Claire's Jeff Bergstrom won the triple jump with a leap of 47-3 1/2 and Platteville's Ryan Kleimenhagen won the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:54.02.

Oshkosh's Matt Groose and Stout's Dave Hanson were named Track Co-Performers of the Meet, while Whitewater's Adam Lendowski was named Field Performer of the Meet.

La Crosse head coach Mark Guthrie and Whitewater head coach Darren Schneider were named the WIAC Co-Coaches of the Year. Guthrie has now been named the conference coach of the year seven times in his career (combined indoor and outdoor), while Scheider garnered the honor for the first time in his career.

Many of the competitors in the WIAC championship will travel to Ohio Northern University next Friday and Saturday, March 8-9 for the NCAA III Indoor Championship.
