Titans Finish Second In NCAA Power Rankings

The UW-Oshkosh men's track and field team placed second in the final NCAA Division III power rankings of the 2007 outdoor season.

Sponsored by the M-F Athletic Company of Cranston, R.I., the power rankings are intended to measure a team's dual-meet strength and overall depth rather than strength in a national or conference meet where teams rely on elite performances by a smaller number of individuals.

UW-La Crosse scored 228.65 points to win this year's outdoor title, while UW-Oshkosh tallied 222.72 to finish second. UW-Oshkosh, which ranked fourth with 213.84 points a year ago, has won the indoor competition the past two seasons.

UW-Stevens Point finished third in this year's outdoor power rankings with 219.98 points, while St. John's University (Minn.) placed fourth with 217.62 and North Central College (Ill.) fifth with 216.21.

Rounding out the top-10 listings were sixth-place UW-Whitewater with 213.63 points, seventh-place Augustana College (Ill.) with 211.27, eighth-place Monmouth College (Ill.) with 210.62, ninth-place Wartburg College (Iowa) with 210.10 and 10th-place Nebraska Wesleyan University with 204.83.

UW-Oshkosh concluded the outdoor season with an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Division III Championship held May 24-26 at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium in Oshkosh.

Titans Finish Eighth At NCAA Outdoor Championship

The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh scored 20 points for the second consecutive year and finished in eighth-place at the NCAA Division III Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championship held Thursday (May 25) through Saturday (May 27) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium in Oshkosh.

Fellow Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference member University of Wisconsin--La Crosse won the national title by amassing 99 points to win its fifth national title in the last six years and 11th overall.

The second through fourth place team finishes went to newcomers as State University of New York-Cortland, Monmouth College (Ill.) and St. John’s University (Minn.) all recorded their first top-four finish in school history to take home a trophy.

Runner-up State University of New York-Cortland tallied 34 points while third-place Monmouth College scored 28 and fourth place St. John’s University 27. The University of Wisconsin-Platteville also enjoyed a fourth-place finish with 27 points, their second top-four finish in school history.

The rest of the top-ten included sixth-place University of Wisconsin-Whitewater with 26 points, seventh-place State University of New York-Brockport with 21 and eighth-place Augustana College (Ill.), Mount Union College (Ohio), Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (Calif.), State University of New York-Buffalo and the University of Redlands (Calif.) with 20.

UW-Oshkosh enjoyed five All-America performances from five different individuals to account for their point total.

Repeating as NCAA Division III All-Americans were Zach Johnson (Sr. • Clintonville), Willy Kaul (So. • Menomonee Falls) and Steve Nowak (Sr. • Casco). Johnson secured third-place in the pole vault with a distance of 15-9 1/4, Kaul took fifth-place in the 10,000-meter run in a time of 31:03.85 and Nowak finished seventh in the decathlon with 6,638 points. Johnson finished in sixth-place and Kaul in fourth-place at last year’s championship, while Nowak captured seventh-place in 2004.

Enjoying their first All-America performances were Jacob Gabrilska (Sr. • Pine River) in the hammer throw with a fourth-place heave of 182-2 and Scott Michel (Jr. • Waupaca) in the 400-meter dash with a fifth-place time of 47.65.
Other UW-Oshkosh athletes qualifying for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championship were Phil Prusinski (So.• Rib Lake) in the hammer throw and Ben Zill (Fr. • New Franken) in the 400-meter hurdles. Kaul also qualified in the 5,000-meter run but had to withdraw from the event due to injury.

Titans Send Seven Competitors To
NCAA Outdoor Championship

UW-Oshkosh attempts to capture its fifth top-five finish in school history when it competes at this weekend's NCAA Division III Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championship. UW-Oshkosh hosts the event for the first time in school history Thursday (May 24) through Saturday (May 26) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

Teams from around the country will travel to Oshkosh for a chance to take home the team title and 19 individual championships, two relay championships, as well as eight All-America awards in each of the 21 events.

UW-Oshkosh sends seven athletes to this weekend's meet, including multiple-event performer Willy Kaul (So. • Menomonee Falls) in the 5,000-meter run and 10,000-meter run. Kaul enters the championship as the second seed in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 14:22.45 and as the 10th seed in the 10,000-meter run in a time of 30:25.14. Last year Kaul finished fourth in the 10,000-meter run in a time of 30:46.29 and qualified in the 5,000-meter run.

Zach Johnson (Sr. • Clintonville) looks to improve upon his fourth-place mark of 15-11 1/4 he set last year. Johnson takes the top-seed of 17-2 1/4 into the championship, an UW-Oshkosh and J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium record he set earlier in the year. Johnson also qualified in the pole vault in 2005.

Jacob Gabrilska (Sr. • Pine River) sits as the third seed in the hammer throw with a fling of 191-3. In 2005, Gabrilska also qualified for the championship in the hammer throw.

Steve Nowak (Sr. • Casco) competes in his third decathlon, this time as a ninth seed with 6,450 points. In 2004 he finished seventh with 6,488 points and also qualified in 2003. Scott Michel (Jr. • Waupaca) completes the UW-Oshkosh returning national qualifiers as he competes in the 400-meter run with an 11th seeded time of 47.97. Last year he also qualified for the 400-meter run.

Competing in their first NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championship are Phil Prusinski (So. • Rib Lake) and Ben Zill (Fr. • New Franken). Prusinski is seeded sixth in the hammer throw with a fling of 181-4 and Zill is seeded 16th in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 53.73.

Last season, the Titans finished eighth with 24 points. UW-Oshkosh's top-five finishes include a runner-up showing in 1990, a third-place listing in 2003 and fifth-place results in 1999 and 2000.

Performing in the last meet before the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championship, the UW-Oshkosh men's outdoor track and field team took first in two events at the UW-La Crosse NCAA Division III Qualifier on Thursday (May 17) in La Crosse.

Taking home first-place for the Titans were Brian Kelley (Jr. • Winnebago, Ill.) in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 15:11.62 and the 1,600-meter relay team of A.J. Hollanquest (So. • Wausau), Kevin Lofy (Jr. • Lake Geneva), Scott Michel (So. • Waupaca) and Jared Morris (Fr. • Wausau) in a time of 3:15.59.

Taking third-place for UW-Oshkosh was Andrew Vos (Fr. • Fort Atkinson) in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 15:33.56. Fourth-place performances for the Titans belonged to Andrew McGuire (So. • Wisconsin Rapids) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 9:17.07, Billy Klitz (So. • Markesan) in the high jump with a leap of 6-4, James Simms (Fr. • Fredonia) in the triple jump with a mark of 44-6 1/4 and Jake Gabrilska (Sr. • Pine River) in the hammer throw with a launch of 183-7.

A fifth-place listing for UW-Oshkosh went to Nick Katsandonis (So. • Markesan) in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 15.07 and he added a sixth-place result in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 54.32.

The UW-Oshkosh men's outdoor track and field team had six individuals capture first-place at their own Last Chance Meet held on Saturday (May 12) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

Leading the Titans with first-place performances were Geoff Gundlach (So. • Middleton) in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 15:03.29, Jeff Baudry (Fr. • Oakfield) in the 10,000-meter run in a time of 35:45.10 and Billy Klitz (So. • Markesan) in the high jump with a mark of 6-4 1/4.

Also taking top honors for UW-Oshkosh were Zach Johnson (Sr. • Clintonville) in the pole vault with a height of 17-0, James Simms (Fr. • Fredonia) in the triple jump with a leap of 46-8 and Jake Gabrilska (Sr. • Pine River) in the hammer throw with a heave of 188-6.

Second-place listings for the Titans went to Nick Sydow (So. • Marshfield) in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 15:04.50 and Ben Zill (Fr. • New Franken) in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 53.73.

Fourth-place showings for UW-Oshkosh included A.J. Hollanquest (So. • Wausau) in the 200-meter dash in a time of 22.19, Jared Morris (Fr. • Wausau) in the 800-meter run in a time of 1:54.59, Nick Katsondonis (So. • Menasha) in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 55.39 and Kevin Koerwitz (Fr. • Oshkosh) in the shot put in a toss of 49-7 1/4.

Kaul Breaks School Record In 5,000-Meter Run

Willy Kaul (So. • Menomonee Falls) broke the school record in the 5,000-meter run and took first place in the event to led the UW-Oshkosh men's track and field team at the North Central College (Ill.) Invitational on Friday (May 11) in Naperville, Ill.

Kaul ran the race in a time of 14:22.45 to better the previous mark of 14:24.90 by Matt Thull who set the standard in 1997. Other top performances for the Titans included a third-place result by Ben Zill (Fr. • New Franken) in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 54.42, a fifth-place listing by A.J. Hollanquest (So. • Wausau) in the 100-meter dash in a time of 11.03 and a fifth-place showing by the 1,600-meter relay team in a time of 3:18.56.

Other UW-Oshkosh top-10 results were set by Andrew McGuire (So. • Wisconsin Rapids) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a ninth-place time of 9:15.49 and David Edwards (Fr. • Waterford) in the 400-meter hurdles in a tenth-place time of 56.39.

The UW-Oshkosh men's outdoor track and field team could only muster one first place performance in the 3,200-meter relay and settled for third place team result in the WIAC Championship held Friday and Saturday (May 4-5) at UW-River Falls. The 3,200-meter relay team finished with a winning time of 7:43.24 as UW-Oshkosh scored 102 points to trail first place UW-La Crosse's 232 points and runner-up UW-Whitewater's 158.

Following UW-Oshkosh were UW-Stevens Point in fourth place with 102 points, UW-Platteville in fifth place with 84 points, UW-Stout and UW-Eau Claire in sixth place with 62 points, UW-River Falls in eighth place with 40 and UW-Superior in ninth with 14.

Taking second-place for UW-Oshkosh were Scott Michel (So. • Waupaca) in the 400-meter dash in time of 47.97, Zach Johnson (Sr. • Clintonville) in the pole vault with a height of 16-6 1/2 and Jacob Gabrilska (Sr. • Pine River) in the hammer throw with a fling of 182-0.

Hollanquest (So. • Wausau) in the 200-meter dash in a time of 22.36, Ben Zill (Fr. • New Franken) in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 54.07, Phil Prusinski (Jr. • Rib Lake) in the hammer throw with a launch of 177-3 and Tyler Walsh (Sr. • Dousman) in the javelin with a toss of 163-6.

Fifth-place achievements for UW-Oshkosh were Hollanquest in the 100-meter dash in a time of 10.92, Billy Klitz (So. • Markesan) in the high jump with a leap of 6-6 1/4, Kevin Koerzitz (Fr. • Oshkosh) in the shot put with a heave of 49-11 and the 400-meter relay team in a time of 3:21.13.

The Titans collected sixth-place results from Andrew Vos (Fr. • Fort Atkinson) in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 15:30.00, Brian Kelley (Jr. • Winnebago, Ill.) in the 10,000-meter run in a time of 31:52.77, Nick Katsondonis (So. • Markesan) in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 15.60 and Joe Dillon (Jr. • Janesville) in the decathlon with 5,547 points.

UW-Oshkosh received seventh-place performances from Geoff Gundlach (So. • Middleton) in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 15:30.52 and David Edwards (Fr. • Waterford) in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 55.39.

The Titans concluded their scoring with eighth-place efforts by Michel in the 200-meter dash in a time of 22.53, Willy Kaul (So. • Menomonee Falls) in the 1,500-meter run in a time of 4:02.58, Katsondonis in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 55.72, Vos in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 9:39.54 and Walsh in the decathlon with 5,444 points.

UW-Platteville's Tyler Sigl was named the Outstanding Track Athlete of the WIAC Championship, UW-Stevens Point's Kyle Steiner was awarded the Outstanding Field Athlete of the Meet, while UW-Whitewater's Jonathon Otte and UW-La Crosse's Kevin Becker were voted the co-recipients of the WIAC's Outdoor Track and Field Max Sparger Scholar Athlete Award. UW-La Crosse's Brent Erickson was selected WIAC Outdoor Track and Field Coach of the Year.

The UW-Oshkosh men's track and field team had eight first place finishes at the UW-Oshkosh Open held Saturday (April 28) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

Zach Johnson (Sr. • Clintonville) broke the school record in the pole vault for the third consecutive meet with a first-place height of 17-2 1/4 to lead the Titans. Other UW-Oshkosh first-place results included Brent Jude (Fr. • Milwaukee) in the 100-meter dash in a time of 10.85, Geoff Gundlach (So. • Middleton) in the 1,500-meter run in a time of 4:04.74 and Jared Morris (Fr. • Wausau) in the 400-meter dash in a time of 50.63.

Rounding out the Titans first place performances were Scott Michel (So. • Waupaca) in the 200-meter dash in a time of 22.14, Andrew Vos (Fr. • Fort Atkinson) in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 15:33.03, Jacob Gabrilska (Sr. • Pine River) in the hammer throw with a heave of 191-3 and Billy Klitz (So. • Markesan) in the high jump with a leap of 6-2 3/4.

Taking second place for UW-Oshkosh were Nick Katsandonis (So. • Menasha) in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 15.17 and the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 56.22, Jude in the 200-meter dash in a time of 22.26 and Phil Prusinski (Jr. • Rib Lake) in the hammer throw with a fling of 181-4.

The Titans also placed second in both relays. Running on the 400-meter relay team that posted a time of 43.51 were Jude, Michel, Kevin Lofy (Jr. • Lake Geneva) and Justin Willis (Fr. • Brown Deer). Members of the 1,600-meter relay team that recorded a time of 3:27.81 were Katsandonis, David Edwards (Fr. • Waterford), Alan Smith (Jr. • Rhinelander) and Ben Zill (Fr. • New Franken).

Third-place results for UW-Oshkosh went to Edwards in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 57.84 and Nick Sydow (So. • Marshfield) in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 16:01.18.

The Titans' lone fourth place performance belonged to Brandon Houle (Sr. • Senior) in the shot put with a toss of 50-4 1/2.

Fifth-place achievements for UW-Oshkosh were Zill in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 15.69, Derrick Fameree (Jr. • Algoma) in the 1,500-meter run in a time of 4:11.43 and Kevin Koerwitz (Fr. • Oshkosh) in the shot put with a toss of 50-1 1/4.

The Titans obtained sixth-place results from Adam Bennett (Jr. • Kenosha) in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 15.75, Danny Thompson (Jr. • Kewaunee) in the triple jump with a mark of 43-10 and Houle in the hammer throw with a heave of 173-7.

UW-Oshkosh received seventh-place efforts from Tyler Walsh (So. • Dousman) in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 15.77, Mark Wavrunek (Fr. • Denmark) in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:01.62, Morris in the 200-meter dash in a time of 22.83, Zill in the triple jump with a leap of 43-9 1/4, Klitz in the javelin with a launch of 144-9 and Steve Nowak (Sr. • Casco) in the pole vault with a distance of 14-0 3/4.

UW-Oshkosh had an eighth-place result from Patrick O'Brien (So. • Appleton) in the 1,500-meter run in a time of 4:18.10.

Five Titans Compete At Gina Relays

The UW-Oshkosh men's outdoor track and field team took five individuals to Hillsdale College (Mich.) to compete at the Gina Relays on Friday and Saturday (April 27-28) in Hillsdale, Michigan.

Willy Kaul (So. • Menomonee Falls) led the Titans with a 16th place finish in the 10,000-meter run in a time of 30:25.14. Brian Kelley (Jr. • Winnebago, Ill.) finished 49th in a time of 31:51.53 in the same event for UW-Oshkosh.
A total of 100 runners participated in the event.

UW-Oshkosh also had A.J. Hollanquest (So. • Wausau) finish 17th out of 54 participants in the 100-meter dash in a time of 11.23, Andrew McGuire (So. • Wisconsin Rapids) take 21st out of 84 performers in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 9:26.29 and Nate Boehlke (Jr. • Sugar Camp) land 27th out of 104 runners in the 800-meter dash in a time of 1:54.49.


UW-Oshkosh Wins Meet Of Champions

The UW-Oshkosh men's outdoor track and field team took 10 first or second place finishes and totaled 213 points to win the Meet of Champions hosted by Augustana College (Ill.)on Saturday (April 21) in Rock Island, Illinois.

UW-Oshkosh was followed in second place by UW-Whitewater with 170 points, Augustana College in third with 152, UW-Stevens Point in fourth with 143 and UW-La Crosse in fifth with 118. A total of nine teams participated in the event.

Zach Johnson (Sr. • Clintonville) broke the school record in the pole vault for the second consecutive meet with a first place height of 17-1 to pace the Titans. Other UW-Oshkosh first place performances went to James Simms (Fr. • Fredonia) in the triple jump with a mark of 45-10 and the 3,200-meter relay team consisting of Nate Boehlke (Jr. • Sugar Camp), Andrew McGuire (So. • Wisconsin Rapids), Jared Morris (Fr. • Wausau) and Ben Witzer (Fr. • Onalaska) in a time of 7:49.78.

Taking runner-up honors for the Titans were Scott Michel (So. • Waupaca) in the 400-meter dash in a time of 48.24, A.J. Hollanquest (So. • Wausau) in the 100-meter dash in a time of 11.07, Willy Kaul (So. • Menomonee Falls) in the 1,500-meter run in a time of 3:56.76, Brad Brezinski (Fr. • Kewaunee) in the triple jump with a distance of 44-6 3/4, Jake Gabrilska (Sr. • Pine River) in the hammer throw with a toss of 176-10 and Billy Klitz (So. • Markesan) in the high jump with a leap of 6-4 1/4.

The 400-meter relay quartet of Hollanquest, Brent Jude (Fr. • Milwaukee), Michel and Justin Willis (Fr. • Brown Deer) also took second place with a time of 41.97.

Third place results for UW-Oshkosh went to Ben Zill (Fr. • New Franken) in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 54.45, the 1,600-meter relay team in a time of 3:24.10, Brandon Houle (Sr. • Oshkosh) in the hammer throw with a fling of 176-3 and Ryan Richardson (Jr. • Richardson) in the 10,000-meter run in a time of 32:29.96.

Fourth place performances for the Titans included Nick Katsondonis (So. • Menesha) in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 15.39, Jude in the 100-meter dash in a time of 11.16, Andrew Vos (Fr. • Fort Atkinson) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 9:41.66, Hollanquest in the 200-meter dash in a time of 22.56, Phil Prusinski (Jr. • Rib Lake) in the hammer throw with a heave of 174-1and Simms in the high jump with a height of 6-2 1/4.

Capturing fifth place for UW-Oshkosh were Nick Sydow (So. • Marshfield) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 9:48.02, Katsondonis in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 55.71, Danny Thompson (Jr. • Kewaunee) in the triple jump with a distance of 43-7 1/4, Houle in the shot put with a launch of 49-10 1/2 and Jon Simon (Jr. • Milwaukee) in the 10,000-meter run in a time of 33:12.61.

The Titans enjoyed a sixth place result from McGuire in the 1,500-meter run in a time of 3:59.0. UW-Oshkosh received seventh place performances from David Edwards (Fr. • Waterford) in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 56.72, Jude in the 200-meter dash in a time of 22.68, Houle in the discus with a fling of 149-0 and Joe Dillon (Jr. • Janesville) in the decathlon with 5,427 points.

UW-Oshkosh had eighth place results from Patrick O'Brien (Sr. • Marinette) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 10:11.23, Wizner in the 800-meter run in a time of 1:56.33, Kevin Koerwitz (Fr. • Oshkosh) in the shot put with a mark of 47-9, Josh Hoff (Fr. • Boyceville) in the 10,000-meter run in a time of 33:25.94 and Tyler Walsh (So. • Dousman) in the decathlon with 5,373 points.

Zupanc Finishes 2,212th In Boston Marathon

John ZupancUW-Oshkosh head men's cross country and head men's track and field coach John Zupanc finished 2,212th out of nearly 23,000 runners in the 111th Boston Marathon held Monday (April 16) in Boston, Mass.

Zupanc, 54, completed the 26-mile, 385-yard course in a time of 3:12.37. He ranked 77th in the 50-59 age group and 2,053rd among the nearly 13,000 male competitors. It was the 19th Boston Marathon appearance for Zupanc.

Robert Cheruiyot won the Boston Marathon for the third time, defending his title in the remnants of a soaking nor'easter to bring Kenya its 15th victory in 17 years. Cheruiyot, who also won the race in 2003, set the course record last year but fought the wind and rain to finish in a slower time of 2:14.13.

Russia's Lidiya Grigoryeva captured the women's crown with a time of 2:29.18.

The Boston Marathon is the world's oldest annual marathon and ranks as one of the world's most prestigious road racing events. The Boston Marathon has distinguished itself as the pinnacle event within the sport of road racing by virtue of its traditions, longevity and method of gaining entry into the race (via qualification).

Zach Johnson (Sr. • Clintonville) broke the school record in the pole vault by more than five inches to pace the UW-Oshkosh men's outdoor track and field team at the UW-Platteville Invitational on Sunday (April 15). Johnson set the Titans' standard by soaring to a height of 17-0, breaking the mark of 16-6 3/4 he set last season as he finished first in the event.

UW-Oshkosh also received first place performances from Andrew McGuire (So. • Wisconsin Rapids) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 9:28.7 and Jacob Gabrilska (Sr. • Pine River) in the hammer throw with a toss of 179-9.

Taking runner-up honors for the Titans were Scott Michel (So. • Waupaca) in the 400-meter dash in a time of 49.01 and A.J. Hollanquest (So. • Wausau) in the 100-meter dash in a time of 10.80.

Third place performances for UW-Oshkosh included the 400-meter relay team that included A.J. Capturing fifth place for UW-Oshkosh was Andrew Vos (Fr. • Fort Atkinson) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 9:54.0 and sixth place listings went to James Simms (Fr. • Fredonia) in the triple jump with a leap of 44-2 3/4 and Billy Klitz (So. • Markesan) in the high jump with a mark of 6-2 1/4.

Seventh place results for the Titans came from Nick Sydow (So. • Marshfield) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 9:55.1, Jude in the 100-meter dash in a time of 11.07 and Ben Zill (Fr. • New Franken) in the 400-meter dash in a time of 55.21.

Seventh place performances continued for Brian Kelley (Jr. • Winnebago, Ill.) in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 15:17.74 and Sam Wiltzius (So. • Coleman) in the hammer throw with a fling of 154-11.

UW-Oshkosh's lone eighth place performer was Danny Thompson (Jr. • Kewaunee) in the long jump with a leap of 20-6 1/2 and in the triple jump with a mark of 43-2 1/2.

Titans Finish Third At NCAA Championship

UW-Oshkosh owned the winning performance in two events as it finished third at the NCAA Division III Men's Indoor Track and Field Championship held Friday (March 9) and Saturday (March 10) in Terre Haute, Ind.

UW-Oshkosh scored 43.5 points to duplicate its third-place finish of a year ago. It was the Titans' sixth top-five finish in the 23-year history of the meet, including second-place listings in 1999, 2001 and 2003. UW-Oshkosh's point total was its second-highest amount at the meet.

Lincoln University (Pa.) scored 53 of its 59 points in the final nine events to capture its seventh NCAA Division III indoor title. Six-time defending champion UW-La Crosse finished second with 48 points, while State University of New York-Brockport placed fourth with 30 and State University of New York-Cortland fifth with 23.

Rounding out the top-10 teams were sixth-place Monmouth College (Ill.) with 20.5 points, seventh-place Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (Calif.), Tufts University (Mass.) and UW-Whitewater with 16 and 10th-place Fisk University (Tenn.), Loras College (Iowa) and New York University with 15. A total of 57 teams scored points.

UW-Oshkosh had seven All-America performances at this year's meet, including first-place efforts in the 35-pound weight throw and distance medley relay.

UW-Oshkosh's Brandon Houle (Sr. • Oshkosh) was named the Outstanding Field Athlete of the Meet after winning the 35-pound weight throw with a distance of 63-11 3/4 and finishing second in the shot put with a mark of 55-6 1/4. Last year, Houle finished third in the 35-pound weight throw with a fling of 63-11 and fourth in the shot put with a hurl of 55-4 3/4. In 2005, Houle placed second in both the 35-pound weight throw and shot put with distances of 62-3 3/4 and 58-6 1/2, respectively.

UW-Oshkosh took first place in the distance medley relay as Nate Boehlke (Jr. • Sugar Camp), A.J. Hollanquest (Jr. • Wausau), Willy Kaul (So. • Menomonee Falls) and Andrew McGuire (So. • Wisconsin Rapids) overcame an eighth seed to win the event with a time of 10:01.85.

The Titans also picked up significant team points from Jacob Gabrilska (Sr. • Pine River) and Zach Johnson (Sr. • Clintonville). Gabrilska finished third in the 35-pound weight throw with a distance of 60-9 1/4, while Johnson tied for fourth in the pole vault with a height of 16-1 3/4. Last year, Gabrilska finished sixth in the 35-pound weight throw with a heave of 62-6, while Johnson placed fifth in the pole vault with a mark of 16-5 1/2.

UW-Oshkosh earned its final team points on the sixth-place finish of its 1,600-meter relay squad and Kaul's seventh-place finish in the 5,000-meter run. Members of the Titans' 1,600-meter relay team that ran to a time of 3:19.67 were Hollanquest, Scot Michel (So. • Waupaca), Jared Morris (Fr. • Wausau) and Ben Zill (Fr. • New Franken). Kaul traveled to a time of 14:47.50 in the 5,000-meter run.

The top eight finishers in each event scored team points and were awarded All-America accolades.

UW-Oshkosh will host the 2007 NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 24-26 at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

Houle Named NCAA Indoor Field Athlete Of The Year

Brandon HouleUW-Oshkosh's Brandon Houle (Sr. • Oshkosh) has been selected as the 2007 NCAA Division III Men's Indoor Field Athlete of the Year by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Houle won the 35-pound weight throw and finished second in the shot put at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship held March 9-10 in Terre Haute, Ind. He was named the Outstanding Field Athlete of the meet after recording distances of 63-11 3/4 in the 35-pound weight throw and 55-6 1/4 in the shot put. Houle's efforts helped UW-Oshkosh to a third-place finish in the team standings.

At the WIAC Indoor Track and Field Championship held Feb. 23-24 in Whitewater, Houle led the Titans to a third-place finish by winning the 35-pound weight throw with a cast of 62-4 1/2 while ranking second in the shot put with a toss of 54-10 3/4.

Since transferring to UW-Oshkosh from the University of Wisconsin three years ago, Houle has earned six NCAA Division III All-America indoor track and field awards.

Last year, Houle finished third in 35-pound weight throw and fourth in the shot put at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship. He placed second in both the 35-pound weight throw and shot put at the 2005 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship.

Houle enters the outdoor track and field season as a four-time NCAA Division III All-American.

Other NCAA Division III indoor tributes went to Will Leer of Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (Calif.) as the Track Athlete of the Year and Roger Haynes of Monmouth College (Ill.) as the Coach of the Year.

Titans To Compete At NCAA Indoor Championship

Four-time All-American Brandon Houle (Sr. • Oshkosh) is among 10 UW-Oshkosh athletes participating at this weekend's NCAA Division III Men's Indoor Track and Field Championship in Terre Haute, Ind.

Competition is scheduled to begin at noon on Friday (March 9) and 11:30 a.m. on Saturday (March 10) at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology's Sports and Recreation Center. On the line in the 23rd edition of the meet will be one team title and 14 individual championships, as well as eight All-America awards in each of the 14 events.

Houle is entered in this weekend's meet as the top seed in both the shot put and 35-pound weight throw. He owns nation-leading distances of 56-8 1/2 in the shot put and 64-11 1/2 in the 35-pound weight throw. Last year, Houle finished third in the 35-pound weight throw with a fling of 63-11 and fourth in the shot put with a hurl of 55-4 3/4. In 2005, Houle placed second in both the shot put and 35-pound weight throw with marks of 58-6 1/2 and 62-3 3/4, respectively.

Also taking part in multiple events for the Titans this weekend are A.J. Hollanquest (Jr. • Wausau) and Willy Kaul (So. • Menomonee Falls). Hollanquest will run on a 1,600-meter relay team that is seeded seventh with a time of 3:18.54 and a distance medley relay squad that is seeded eighth with a time of 10:04.43. Kaul will compete in both the 5,000-meter run and distance medley relay. He is seeded fifth in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:33.24.

Other members of UW-Oshkosh's 1,600-meter relay team are Scot Michel (So. • Waupaca), Jared Morris (Fr. • Wausau) and Ben Zill (Fr. • New Franken). The Titans' distance medley relay team also includes Nate Boehlke (Jr. • Sugar Camp) and Andrew McGuire (So. • Wisconsin Rapids).

Six-time champion Lincoln University (Pa.) is heavily favored to capture the team title at this weekend's meet. Other schools expected to contend for a top-five position are UW-Oshkosh, Williams College (Mass.), 13-time champion UW-La Crosse, Monmouth College (Ill.), State University of New York-Brockport and New York University. UW-La Crosse won last year's meet with 78 points.

Since 1999, UW-Oshkosh has finished in the top five at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship five times. The Titans placed second in 1991, 2001 and 2003, third in 2006 and fifth in 2002. UW-Oshkosh scored 27 points at last year's meet.

Titans Repeat As Champion Of
NCAA Indoor Power Rankings

UW-Oshkosh has been crowned champion of the NCAA Division III Men's Indoor Track and Field Power Rankings for the second consecutive season.

The power rankings, sponsored by the M-F Athletic Company of Cranston, R.I., are intended to measure a team's dual-meet strength and overall depth rather than strength in a national or conference meet where teams rely on elite performances by a smaller number of individuals.

UW-Oshkosh scored 157.49 points to capture this year's title, while Monmouth College (Ill.) ranked second with 153.40, UW-La Crosse third with 151.33, UW-Whitewater fourth with 149.36 and UW-Stevens Point fifth with 148.53. UW-Oshkosh won last year's title with 158.46 points.

Completing the top 10 teams were sixth-place Mount Union College (Ohio) with 147.40 points, seventh-place North Central College (Ill.) with 146.67, eighth-place University of St. Thomas (Minn.) with 145.12, ninth-place UW-Platteville with 144.17 and 10th-place UW-Eau Claire with 143.90.

UW-Oshkosh concludes its indoor season by competing at the NCAA Division III Championship on Friday (March 9) and Saturday (March 10) in Terre Haute, Ind.

Zach Johnson (Sr. • Clintonville) cleared a school-record height in the pole vault as the UW-Oshkosh men’s track and field team finished second in its own invitational held Saturday (Feb. 17) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Eau Claire won the 10-team meet with 166 points, while UW-Oshkosh placed second with 162, UW-Stevens Point third with 140, UW-La Crosse fourth with 45 and the Greater Milwaukee Track Club fifth with 43.5.

Johnson broke his own school record in the pole vault by leaping to a winning mark of 16-6 3/4. His performance surpassed the automatic qualifying standard for next month’s NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship in Terre Haute, Ind.

UW-Oshkosh’s Brandon Houle (Sr. • Oshkosh) registered a pair of victories by winning the shot put with a toss of 55-1 1/2 and 35-pound weight throw with a launch of 63-1 1/2. His effort in the 35-pound weight throw surpassed the automatic qualifying standard for the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship.

Other individual winners for the Titans were Willy Kaul (So. • Menomonee Falls) and Nick Sydow (So. • Marshfield). Kaul won the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:56.28 while Sydow took the top listing in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:51.21.

UW-Oshkosh had a pair of fifth-place finishes as James Simms (Fr. • Fredonia) leaped 20-1 3/4 in the long jump while Ben Wizner (Fr. • Onalaska) posted a time of 1:58.00 in the 800-meter run.

Placing sixth for the Titans were Zill in the high jump with a leap of 5-10, Zak Schmidt (So. • New Berlin) in the pole vault with a height of 14-3 1/4, Tyler Walsh (So. • Dousman) in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.86 and Sam Wiltzius (So. • Coleman) in the 35-pound weight throw with a fling of 46-8.

UW-Oshkosh's list of top performances concluded with Gabrilska's seventh-place mark of 43-7 in shot put. Adam Bennett's (Sr. • Kenosha) seventh-place time of 8.89 in the 60-meter hurdles and Prusinski's eighth-place distance of 42-9 in the shot put.

Hollanquest Finishes Third At Badger Open

University of Wisconsin's Dan Goesch won the race with a time of 6.92 seconds, while Hollanquest placed third in 6.97. UW-La Crosse had the other two collegiate performances in the top six as Alex Rooker finished fourth in 7.16 seconds and Kevin Means sixth in 7.37.

Hollanquest advanced to the final by winning his heat with a time of 6.99 seconds. Rooker finished second in the race with a time of 7.19 seconds.

Hollanquest was UW-Oshkosh's lone participant in the non-scoring meet.

Host University of Wisconsin, the second-ranked team in the NCAA Division I, owned the winner in nine of the 15 events.

A.J. Hollanquest (Jr. • Wausau) and Brandon Houle (Sr. • Oshkosh) both won a pair of events as the UW-Oshkosh men's track and field team finished second at the Warhawk Classic held Friday (Feb. 9) in Whitewater.

UW-La Crosse won the eight-team meet with 171 points, while UW-Oshkosh finished second with 123.5, host UW-Whitewater third with 111, North Central College (Ill.) fourth with 70.5 and Wartburg College (Iowa) fifth with 62.5.

Hollanquest took first place in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.47 and the 200-meter dash with a performance of 22.50.

Houle remained unbeaten in both the shot put and 35-pound weight throw this indoor season by recording winning marks of 56-8 1/2 and 60-7 3/4, respectively. Both distances surpassed the automatic qualifying standard for next month's NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship in Terra Haute, Ind.

UW-Oshkosh also picked up a victory in the heptathlon as Steve Nowak (Sr. • Casco) totaled 2,718 points.

Brandon Houle (Sr. • Oshkosh) established school and facility records in the 35-pound weight throw as the UW-Oshkosh men's track and field team won its own invitational held Saturday (Feb. 3) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Oshkosh took first place in the seven-team meet with 263 points, while UW-Platteville finished second with 193, St. Norbert College third with 64, Carroll College fourth with 48, Ripon College fifth with 23 and the Greater Milwaukee Track Club seventh with four.

Houle was the Titans' lone multiple champion, winning the shot put with toss of 55-9 3/4 and the 35-pound weight throw with a heave of 64-11 1/2. Houle surpassed the automatic qualifying standard for next month's NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship in both events. His performance in the 35-pound weight throw also set UW-Oshkosh and Kolf Sports Center records.

The Titans also placed fourth in the 800-meter relay as Bennett, Zill, Joe Dillon (Jr. • Janesville) and David Edwards (Fr. • Waterford) ran to a time of 1:36.24.

UW-Oshkosh's fifth-place finishers were Dillon in the long jump with a leap of 19-9 1/2, Nick Hacker (Fr. • Kimberly) in the 35-pound weight throw with a fling of 48-3 1/2, Joshua Hoff (Fr. • Boyceville) in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 16:00.31, Andrew McGuire (So. • Wisconsin Rapids) in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:58.82 and Tyler Walsh (So. • Dousman) in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.55.

Sixth-place listings belonged to the Titans' Koerwitz in the 35-pound weight throw with a toss of 45-9 3/4, Brad Brezinski (Fr. • Kewaunee) in the triple jump with a leap of 42-2 3/4, Jacob Haury (Fr. • Milwaukee) in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 16:20.72, Mark Johnson (Sr. • Hartland) in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:58.91 and Mark Wavrunek (Fr. • Denmark) in the 400-meter run with a time of 53.25.

Titans, Cardinals Dominate Quadrangular

The UW-Oshkosh men's track and field team rolled up 29 top-three finishes to win a quadrangular with North Central College (Ill.), Ripon College and UW-Parkside on Friday (Jan. 26) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Oshkosh took first place with 277.5 points, while North Central College finished second with 236, Ripon College third with 31.5 and UW-Parkside fourth with 17.

Brandon Houle (Sr. • Oshkosh) and James Simms (Fr. • Fredonia) each won two events to lead UW-Oshkosh.

Houle finished first in the shot put with a toss of 53-4 1/4 and the 35-pound weight throw with a fling of 62-0 1/2. He surpassed the automatic qualifying standard for next month's NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship in both events. Simms owned the top performance in the high jump with a leap of 6-4 and the long jump with a mark of 20-2 1/4.

The Titans also had Zach Johnson (Sr. • Clintonville) win the pole vault with a school-record leap of 16-6. His height also surpassed the automatic qualifying standard for next month's NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship.

Other first-place finishes went to UW-Oshkosh's Nate Boehlke (Jr. • Sugar Camp) in the one-mile run with a time of 4:22.24, Brad Brezinski (Fr. • Kewaunee) in the triple jump with a distance of 43-9 1/4, Chad Churchill (Fr. • Sheboygan) in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.31, A.J. Hollanquest (Jr. • Wausau) in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.55, Nick Katsandonis (So. • Menasha) in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 1:32.45, Andrew McGuire (So. • Wisconsin Rapids) in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:48.32 and Ryan Richardson (Sr. • Winnebago, Ill.) in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:24.45.

The Titans won the 800-meter relay as Churchill, Hollanquest, Johnson and Joe Dillon (Jr. • Janesville) ran to a time of 1:32.45.

Second-place efforts belonged to UW-Oshkosh's Adam Bennett (Sr. • Kenosha) in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.23, Jacob Gabrilska (Sr. • Pine River) in the 35-pound weight throw with a cast of 59-0 3/4, Billy Klitz (Jr. • Markesan) in the high jump with a leap of 6-0, Scot Michel (So. • Waupaca) in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.71, Jared Morris (Fr. • Wausau) in the 400-meter run with a time of 50.90, Ben Wizner (Fr. • Onalaska) in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:58.41 and Ben Zill (Fr. • New Franken) in the triple jump with a mark of 43-8.

The Titans took second in the 1,600-meter relay as Morris, Wizner, Zill and Joe Bretl (Jr. • Peshtigo) posted a time of 3:28.27.

UW-Oshkosh's third-place finishers were Michel in the 400-meter run with a time of 51.31, Simms in the triple jump with a distance of 43-7 3/4, Zill in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.37, Derrick Fameree (Jr. • Algoma) in the one-mile run with a time of 4:27.87, Geoff Gundlach (Jr. • Middleton) in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:53.50, Mark Johnson (Sr. • Hartland) in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:00.11, Kevin Koerwitz (Fr. • Oshkosh) in the shot put with a toss of 47-2 1/4 and Phil Prusinski (So. • Rib Lake) in the 35-pound weight throw with a hurl of 55-2.

Fourth-place finishes went to the Titans' Brezinski in the lone jump with a leap of 19-4 3/4, Zak Schmidt (So. • New Berlin) in the pole vault with a height of 14-7 1/4 and Danny Thompson (Jr. • Kewaunee) in the triple jump with a mark of 43-3 3/4.

UW-Oshkosh took fourth place in the distance medley relay as Patrick Darrough (Fr. • Mundelein, Ill.), Kyle Peterson (So. • Neenah), Jon Simon (Jr. • Milwaukee) and Tyler Wundrow (Fr. • Little Chute) ran to a time of 11:32.79.

Taking fifth place for the Titans were Bennett in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.93, Zach Johnson in the long jump with a leap of 19-2 1/2 and Nick Hacker (Jr. • Appleton) in the 35-pound weight throw with a heave of 46-10.

UW-Oshkosh's sixth-place listings included a pair by Dillon. Dillon ran to a time of 7.02 in the 55-meter dash while leaping to a height of 5-6 in the high jump. Other sixth-place finishers went to the Titans' Bretl in the 400-meter run with a time of 52.13, Jacob Haury (Fr. • Milwaukee) in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:00.39 and Joshua Hoff (Fr. • Boyceville) in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:12.09.

Titans Victorious In Season Opener

The UW-Oshkosh men's track and field team swept the top-two places in eight of the 15 events as it rolled to a 95.5-59.5 season-opening victory over the University of Chicago on Saturday (Jan. 13) in Chicago, Ill.

UW-Oshkosh totaled 10 first-place finishes in the meet, including a pair by Brandon Houle (Sr. • Oshkosh). Houle won the shot put with a toss of 53-5 1/4 and the 35-pound weight throw with a hurl of 59-2 3/4.

The Titans also received strong performances from Brent Jude (Fr. • Milwaukee) and Ben Zill (Fr. • New Franken). Jude won the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.03 and finished second in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.59 while Zill won the triple jump with a leap of 44-11 3/4 and placed second in high jump with a leap of 6-1 1/4.

Other event winners for UW-Oshkosh were Scot Frassetto (So. • Kimberly) in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.16, Zach Johnson (Sr. • Clintonville) in the pole vault with a height of 15-9 3/4, Billy Klitz (Jr. • Markesan) in the high jump with a leap of 6-3 1/4, Jared Morris (Fr. • Wausau) in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:59.11 and Ryan Richardson (Sr. • Winnebago, Ill.) in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:03.15.

The Titans also won the 1,600-meter relay as Morris, Joel Bretl (Jr. • Peshtigo), Andrew McGuire (So. • Wisconsin Rapids) and Ben Wizner (Fr. • Onalaska) notched a time of 3:30.49.
