Howell, Borski Collect All-North Region Citations

Jack BorskiWill HowellMidfielder Will Howell (Sr. • Waunakee) and defender Jack Borski (Jr. • Madison) are the UW-Oshkosh representatives on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's 2009 NCAA Division III All-North Region Men's Soccer Team.

A total of 33 players were named to this year's all-region squad, including four from both Carleton College (Minn.) and Loras College (Iowa) and three each from the University of St. Thomas (Minn.), UW-Whitewater and Wartburg College (Iowa).

Howell picks up his third all-region award after receiving second-team honors in 2008 and third-team accolades in 2007 as a member of the All-North Central Region squad. He joins Roberto Gutierrez (1993-95) and Brad Haga (2001-03) as the only three-time, all-region selections in UW-Oshkosh history.

Borski obtains his second all-region prize. Last year, he was a member of the All-North Central Region second team.

Howell started all 18 matches for the Titans this past season and totaled a team-high 26 points on a team-best 10 goals and six assists. He converted five penalty kicks on the season and tallied a pair of goals in UW-Oshkosh's 3-1 victory over UW-Superior on Oct. 10.

In 2008, Howell started all 18 contests and compiled 22 points on seven goals and eight assists. In 2007, He started 20 of the 21 matches that he played in and recorded 16 points on five goals and six assists. In 2006, Howell started 14 of the 15 games that he played in and registered seven points on two goals and three assists.

Howell concluded his UW-Oshkosh career with 71 points, 24 goals and 23 assists. He played in 72 matches, including 70 as a starter.

This past season, Borski started all 17 matches that he played in and tallied one goal and three assists. His performance in the defensive backfield helped the Titans to eight shutouts and a 0.82 goals against average.

In 2008, Borski totaled two assists while helping UW-Oshkosh to 10 shutouts and a 0.86 goals against average. Borski started all 18 matches that he played in. In 2007, Borski started 20 of the 21 contests that he played in. He compiled five assists while helping the Titans to 13 shutouts and a 0.61 goals against average.

UW-Oshkosh finished the 2009 season with a 13-4-2 record (2-1-1 WIAC). It was the 25th consecutive winning season for the Titans.

Borski, Beach Receive All-Region Scholar Awards

Borski Named CoSIDA Academic All-American

Jack BorskiExcellence on the field and exemplary work in the classroom has earned UW-Oshkosh defender Jack Borski (Jr. • Madison) a spot on the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Men’s Soccer Team.

Borski was selected to the third team of the College Division squad by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). A total of 33 student-athletes were honored, with 12 placed on the first team, 10 on the second and 11 on the third. The College Division team features student-athletes from NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA schools.

This past season, Borski tallied one goal and three assists while starting all 17 matches that he played in. His performance in the defensive backfield helped the Titans to eight shutouts, a 0.82 goals against average and a 13-4-2 record.

Borski was the only men's soccer player from the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) to receive a spot on this year's squad.

Borski becomes the third UW-Oshkosh men's soccer player to receive CoSIDA Academic All-America honors. He follows the second-team selection of Mitch Poppen in 1993 and the third-team mention of Rich Plier in 2000. Since the inception of the CoSIDA Academic All-America Program in 1952, 41 UW-Oshkosh student-athletes have combined to total 53 Academic All-America awards.

Beach Receives WIAC Scholar-Athlete Award

Paul BeachUW-Oshkosh men's soccer player Paul Beach (Sr. • Prairie du Sac) has been named the 2009 winner of the WIAC's Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete Award.

Beach, a midfielder, started all 17 matches that he played in this past season and totaled 14 points on four goals and six assists. His performance helped the Titans to a 13-4-2 record and a third-place finish (2-1-1 record) in the WIAC standings.

In 2008, Beach started 15 of the 18 contests that he played in and compiled 13 points on three goals and seven assists. In 2007, Beach started 18 of the 21 matches that he played in and counted 13 points on two goals and nine assists. In 2006, Beach started 17 of the 18 games that he played in and tallied eight points on three goals and two assists.

Beach scored 48 points on 12 goals and 24 assists during his 74-match career. He helped UW-Oshkosh register a 49-18-9 record, including a 17-3-1 mark in 2007 when the Titans advanced to the third round of the NCAA Division III Championship.

Beach owns a 3.48 cumulative grade point average as a business major. In 2008, Beach was selected to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's All-North Central Region Scholar Team. He is a three-time member of the WIAC's Scholastic Honor Roll.

Beach is also a member of Pi Sigma Alpha Political Science National Honor Society, Omicron Delta Epsilon Economic International Honor Society and National Society of Leadership.

Beach is the second UW-Oshkosh men's soccer player to receive the WIAC's Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete Award. He follows Robin Rameker who won the award for the Titans in 1995.

UW-Oshkosh defender Mason Eddy (Sr. • Oneida) was also nominated for this year's award.

Titans Fall Short In Bid For WIAC Title

Brandon BrionesJames PikeTim Stadler Luke Buchholz’ header off of a teammate's miss lifted the UW-Whitewater men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over UW-Oshkosh Titans on Saturday (Nov. 7) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

Buchholz’ goal, a WIAC leading 12th of the season, came at 55:46 mark of the match. It came when teammate Luke Mangognia’s header bounced off UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper James Pike. Buchholz then rebounded the miss for the only goal of the game.

The contest featured two teams listed high in the NCAA Division III North Region rankings. UW-Whitewater (11-5-3/3-0-1 WIAC) was ranked third in the poll and UW-Oshkosh (13-4-2/2-1-1 WIAC) sixth.

UW-Whitewater captured the inaugural WIAC championship with the victory. UW-Platteville (9-8-3/2-0-2 WIAC) placed second, UW-Oshkosh third, UW-Superior (7-9-3/1-3 WIAC) fourth and Finlandia University (Mich.) (2-17/0-4 WIAC) fifth.

UW-Oshkosh, which suffered its first loss to UW-Whitewater in four contests (1-1-2 record), attempted 10 shots. Brandon Briones launched three shots and Tim Stadler two. The Titans had three corner kicks.

UW-Whitewater took seven shots, including five by Buchholz. The Warhawks earned six corner kicks.

Goalkeepers James Pike of UW-Oshkosh and Andrew Krueger of UW-Whitewater both saved four shots.

UW-Oshkosh and UW-Whitewater will find out if their season continues when bids to the NCAA Division III Championship are announced on Monday (Nov. 9).

Borski Collects CoSIDA Academic All-District Honor

Jack BorskiUW-Oshkosh defender Jack Borski (Jr. • Madison) was named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA)/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V Men's Soccer Team for his exploits both on and off the soccer field.

Borski, who was voted to the 22-member College Division squad by sports information directors within the region, was named to the first team. He now has the opportunity to be selected to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America squad, which will be released in mid-November.

Borski has started all 16 matches that he has played in this season. His performance in the defensive backline has helped the Titans to eight shutouts, a 0.81 goals against average and a 13-3-2 record. Borski is credited this season with one goal and three assists.

Titans, Pioneers Play To Stalemate

Robby GiljohannWill HowellAndy Kohel A men's soccer battle between UW-Oshkosh and UW-Platteville ended in a 2-2, double-overtime tie on Sunday (Nov. 1) in Platteville.

The tie was the Titans’ second of the season and their first against UW-Platteville in 25 meetings. UW-Oshkosh leads the all-time series against UW-Platteville by a 21-3-1 tally.

UW-Platteville began the scoring with B.J. Gottschlich’s goal at the 13:47 mark of the match.

The score remained 1-0 until the Titans’ Will Howell scored his 10th goal of the season at the 65:51 mark.

UW-Platteville answered minutes later at the 69:37 mark with Kyle Hoerter’s rebound of teammate Mitch Corneilus’ miss to give UW-Platteville a 2-1 advantage.

The Titans scored the match’s final goal at the 73:28 mark with Robby Giljohann’s second goal of the year, assisted by Will Howell to tie the match at two apiece.

Both teams played strong defense in both extra periods to end the match in a 2-2 tie.

UW-Oshkosh (13-3-2, 2-0-1 WIAC) offensively, was lead by Will Howell with four shots, Andy Kohel with three, and Tim Stadler, Will Chaney, Musa Sowe and Greg Jones all with two shots each.

Goalkeeper James Pike, who played all 110 minutes, saved six shots, and allowed two goals to fourteen shots faced.

UW-Oshkosh continues action on Saturday (Nov. 7) as it takes on UW-Whitewater at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

UW-Oshkosh Dominates Battle Of Titans

Paul BeachGreg JonesDevon Prideaux A dominant offensive performance led the UW-Oshkosh men’s soccer team to an 8-1 victory over Illinois Wesleyan University, in a match held Wednesday (Oct. 28) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

UW-Oshkosh got on the scoreboard early thanks to Andy Domer’s unassisted goal, his second of the season, just 4:31 into the game.

Soon after, Brandon Briones added his seventh goal of the year at the 6:14 mark, thanks to assists from Andy Domer and Paul Beach, for a 2-0 lead.

The next goal for UW-Oshkosh came at 15:32, when Will Howell’s ninth goal of the year, this one unassisted, found the back of the net for a 3-0 lead.

UW-Oshkosh scored again with Greg Jones’ third goal of the season at the 34:46 mark, thanks to an assist from Paul Beach, giving the Titans a 4-0 advantage.

Illinois Wesleyan University would score their lone goal of the night at the 40:23 mark with Tom Marlow’s goal to cut the lead to 4-1; however, the Titans would answer just before the half with Musa Sowe’s fourth goal of the year, scored off of passes from Robby Giljohann and Greg Jones to give UW-Oshkosh a 5-1 lead into the half.

UW-Oshkosh scored early once again in the second half, this time at the 48:29 mark with Devon Prideaux’s fourth goal of the season assisted by Will Howell.

Prideaux, however, wasn’t finished, as he scored twice more in the match, at the 58:50 and 63:49 marks, respectively, to put the game away for UW-Oshkosh.

UW-Oshkosh (13-3-1) totaled nineteen shots and eight corner kicks, led by Brandon Briones with five shots, Devon Prideaux with three and Andy Kohel, Paul Beach and Greg Jones all with two.

UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Tim Gindville, who played 73:50, saved four shots and allowed one goal. His replacement Aaron Brzeski played the final 16:10. Both faced nine shots total.

UW-Oshkosh continues action on Sunday (Nov. 1) as they travel to UW-Platteville.

O'Brien Earns WIAC Player Of The Week Award

Garrett O'BrienThe WIAC has named UW-Oshkosh midfielder Garrett O'Brien (So. • Shoreview, Minn.) as its Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week. O'Brien, a first-time honoree, was recognized for his performance in matches held Oct. 19-25.

O’Brien scored three goals and tallied two assists as UW-Oshkosh posted a 9-0 road victory over Finlandia University (Mich.) on Oct. 20. O’Brien counted all three goals and both assists in the first half as the Titans took an 8-0 lead to intermission.

O’Brien, who entered the contest with only one goal on the season, gave UW-Oshkosh leads of 2-0, 5-0 and 7-0 with his goals. He assisted on the Titans’ first and third goals. He finished the match with six shots.

O’Brien didn’t play in UW-Oshkosh’s 2-1 road loss to Carroll University on Oct. 24.

The Titans (12-3-1/2-0 WIAC) entered the week ranked 16th in the NCAA Division III by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and 22nd by D3soccer.com. Carroll University was ranked 22nd in the NCAA Division III by the NSCAA.

Ben Mooney of UW-Superior was named the WIAC Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week.

22nd-Ranked Pioneers, Fight Off 16th-Ranked Titans

Paul BeachJames PikeDevon PrideauxA defensive battle between two nationally ranked men's soccer teams went in favor of Carroll University as the Pioneers edged the Titans, 2-1, on Saturday (Oct. 24) in Waukesha.

UW-Oshkosh (12-3-1) entered the contest ranked 16th in the NCAA Division III by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, while Carroll University (14-1-2) was 22nd. It was the fifth meeting between the teams, with the Pioneers cutting the Titans' advantage in the all-time series to 3-2.

Carroll University tallied the first two goals of the contest, including Doug Johnson's scoring strike just 5:52 into play. Andy Prentice, who assisted on Johnson's goal with Stanislaw Miaskowski, gave the Pioneers a 2-0 lead when he kicked in an assisted goal by Craig Carlson at the 28:22 mark of action.

UW-Oshkosh sliced its deficit in half when Devon Prideaux (Jr. • Eden Prairie, Minn.) scored an unassisted goal at the 70:39 mark of the match. It was the third goal of the season for Prideaux.

UW-Oshkosh totaled nine shots and three corner kicks. Paul Beach (Sr. • Prairie du Sac) and Andy Domer (Jr. • Brookfield) led the Titans with two shots each.

Carroll University, which has won its last nine matches, compiled seven shots and three corner kicks. The Pioneers were led by the two shots each of Johnson, Prentice and Ryan Szecsy.

UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper James Pike (So. • Wauwatosa) saved three shots, while Miaskowski, the Carroll University goalkeeper, stopped five.

UW-Oshkosh returns home to host Illinois Wesleyan University on Wednesday (Oct. 28).

Titans Capture Lions

Jesse KleinPaul MarxGarrett O'BrienThe 16th ranked UW-Oshkosh men’s soccer team, looking to rebound from a weekend loss to Wheaton College, did so in a big way, racking up a season high in goals scored during a 9-0 win over Finlandia University in a match held Tuesday (Oct. 20) at Hancock, Mich.

UW-Oshkosh started the scoring early on a rainy afternoon at the 4:20 mark, when Jesse Klein’s second goal of the year came off of Garrett O’Brien’s corner kick.

The next score for the Titans came 36 seconds later at the 4:56 mark, when Jesse Klein assisted Garrett O’Brien for his second goal of the year to give the Titans a 2-0 advantage. At the 12:39 mark, Evan Maly found the goal off of a corner kick by Jesse Klein and an assist from Garrett O’Brien to expand the lead to 3-0.

Will Chaney added the Titans’ next goal, this one at the 21:03 mark, off an assist from Kyle Wallin to make the score 4-0. This score was followed closely by Garrett O’Brien’s second goal of the afternoon at the 23:35 mark, this one assisted by Will Chaney, giving the Titans a 5-0 lead. At the 25:34 mark, Musa Sowe added his third goal of the season off of an assist from Tim Stadler, to expand the UW-Oshkosh lead to 6-0.

UW-Oshkosh scored twice more before the half, first at the 31:06 mark, with Garrett O’Brien’s third goal of the night, unassisted, and at the 35:40 mark from Greg Jones’ second goal of the year, off of Garrett O’Brien’s corner kick, to make the halftime advantage for the Titans’ 8-0. The Titans’ would add one more goal after the half at the 69:32 mark, when Paul Marx scored his first collegiate goal, unassisted, to make the final score 9-0.

UW-Oshkosh (12-2-1/2-0 WIAC) outshot Finlandia University 26-7, lead by Paul Marx, Garrett O’Brien and Greg Jones all with six shots.

Goalkeeper Aaron Brzeski had six saves to seven shots faced and no goals allowed.

The Titans continue action on Saturday (Oct. 24) as they travel to Carroll University.

Titans Silenced By Thunder

Robby GiljohannTim GindvilleDevon PrideauxThe 16th ranked UW-Oshkosh men’s soccer team turned in another srong defensive effort, but an early second half goal sent visiting Wheaton College (Ill.) home with a 1-0 win in a match played Saturday (Oct. 17) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

The loss snapped a four-match winning streak for the Titans, who had shut out their last three non-conference opponents, 15-0.

The lone goal of the match came at the 47:38 mark, when Wheaton College's Stephen Mesko knocked in his second goal of the year, this one assisted by Jason Lollar, from 40 yards out straight away.

The offense for UW-Oshkosh outshot Wheaton College 10-8, led by Robby Giljohann with four shots and Devon Prideaux with two.

Goalkeeper Tim Gindville saved five shots, and allowed one goal to eight shots faced.

The Titans (11-2-1) continue action on the road against WIAC conference foe Finlandia University (Mich.) on Tuesday (Oct. 20).

Titans Blank Red Hawks

Paul BeachGreg JonesKyle HeimsteadThe UW-Oshkosh men’s soccer team, ranked 16th in the nation by the NSCAA, shut out their third straight non-conference opponent and earned their fourth straight victory of the season, 5-0, over the Ripon College Red Hawks in a match held Wednesday (Oct. 14) at Ripon.

The win extends the series lead for UW-Oshkosh over Ripon College to a record of 24-0-2, and marks the Titans’ seventh shut out on the season.

UW-Oshkosh opened scoring on a cold and windy afternoon at the 10:29 mark, when Will Howell’s pass found Paul Beach open, who knocked it in for his fourth goal of the year, giving the Titans a 1-0 advantage.

In the second half, Paul Beach would play a part in the Titans’ next goal as well, this time assisting Michael Franzen’s first goal of the year at the 48:56 mark to expand the lead to 2-0.

Next, at the 73:37 mark, Greg Jones would knock in a penalty kick, his first goal of the year, to extend the lead to 3-0 for UW-Oshkosh.

At the 82:20 mark, UW-Oshkosh would extend their lead once again, thanks to an own goal from Ripon College to make the score 4-0.

Yet another penalty kick would close out the scoring for the night, as at the 88:16 mark, Kyle Heimstead knocked in his kick, and made the final score 5-0.

UW-Oshkosh (11-1-1) was led offensively by Paul Beach with four shots and Will Howell, Robby Giljohann, Greg Jones and Kyle Heimstead all with two apiece.

Goalkeeper James Pike finished with four saves to six total shots faced.

The Titans continue action on Saturday (Oct. 17) against Wheaton College (Ill.) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

Titans Post Another Shutout

Brandon BrionesGarrett O'BrienJosh SweeneyThe UW-Oshkosh men’s soccer team, ranked 20th in the nation by the NSCAA, had four different players score to earn their second straight shutout and sixth of the year, this time over the Lawrence University Vikings, 5-0, in a match held Wednesday (Oct. 7) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

The win was UW-Oshkosh’s 23rd in the series against Lawrence University, and the Titans hold a 23-3 overall advantage. The win was also Toby Bares’ 340th as the Titans' head coach.

UW-Oshkosh started the scoring early at the 5:32 mark; when Brandon Briones scored a header off of passes from Tim Stadler and Greg Jones to give the Titans an early 1-0 advantage.

Briones scored the next goal for the Titans as well, this one at the 32:40 mark, as he took a pass from Michael Franzen to make a 2-0 advantage going in to halftime.

After the half, UW-Oshkosh opened up the game at the 48:24 mark when Evan Maly scored his second goal of the season, thanks to assists by Michael Franzen and Devon Prideaux.

UW-Oshkosh then added in a goal off of a penalty kick by Garrett O’Brien at the 74:24 mark to make the score 4-0 over Lawrence University.

The final goal on the night for the Titans came at the 88:06 mark, when Greg Jones’ free kick sailed the way of Josh Sweeney, who punched it in to make the final score 5-0.

UW-Oshkosh (9-1-1) was led offensively by Brandon Briones with six shots, Will Howell with four, and Josh Sweeney, Devon Prideaux, and Andy Domer all with two.

Goalkeeper James Pike, who played 75 minutes, had the only two saves for the Titans, his replacement Aaron Brzeski played the final 14 minutes of the game, both faced three shots to no goals allowed.

The Titans continue action on Saturday (Oct. 10) as they open WIAC play against UW-Superior at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

Sowe Named WIAC Player Of The Week

Musa SoweThe WIAC has named UW-Oshkosh forward Musa Sowe (Fr. • Gambia, West Africa) as its Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week. Sowe, a first-time honoree, was recognized for his performance in matches held Sept. 28-Oct. 4.

Sowe started a chain of goals for UW-Oshkosh as the Titans defeated previously once-beaten St. Norbert College, 5-0, on Sept. 30 at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

Sowe gave the Titans a 1-0 lead when he sailed a 20-yard kick into the goal at the 40:52 mark of the contest. The shot was one of two taken by Sowe in the match.

This season, Sowe has two goals for a UW-Oshkosh squad that is ranked 16th in the NCAA Division III by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and 21st by D3soccer.com with an 8-1-1 record.

Anthony Heller of UW-Platteville was named the WIAC Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week.

Titans Blank Green Knights

The match was the 27th meeting between the two schools, with the Titans holding a 21-5-1 lead in the series.

The Titans started the scoring at the 40:52 mark, when Musa Sowe scored his second goal of the year, unassisted, from 20 yards straight of the goal.

After the break, the Titans opened up the game beginning at the 52:19 mark, as Tim Stadler took passes from Mike Franzen and Will Howell to make the score 2-0.

UW-Oshkosh added another goal, this time at the 60:49 mark, when Brandon Briones and Mike Franzen would assist Paul Beach’s third goal of the year to make the score 3-0 in favor of the Titans.

At the 66:39 mark, Robby Giljohann scored off of passes from Jack Borski and Will Chaney to expand their lead to 4-0.

The last goal for the Titans came at the 80:53 mark, when Devon Prideaux knocked in Garrett O’Brien’s corner kick to make the final score 5-0.

UW-Oshkosh (8-1-1) was led offensively by Paul Beach with four shots and Andy Kohel, Robby Giljohann, Greg Jones and Musa Sowe all with two shots apiece. The Titans outshot the Green Knights 17 to 6.

Goalkeeper James Pike, who played 74 minutes, had the one of the two saves for the Titans, to no goals allowed. The Titans continue action on Wednesday (Sept. 7) as they take on Lawrence University at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

Oles Deal Titans First Loss Of Season

Jack BorskiAndy DomerEvan MalyThe UW-Oshkosh men’s soccer team, ranked 21st in the nation and coming off an upset of #15 Augsburg College on Friday, took an early 1-0 lead, but would give up three unanswered goals to St. Olaf College and lose their first match of the season 3-1 on Sunday, Sept. 27 in Northfield Minnesota.

The match was the 13th between the two teams, and despite the loss, UW-Oshkosh continues to hold a 9-3-1 record in the series.

The Titans would start the scoring at the 35:38 mark, when Evan Maly would score his first goal of the season off of a pass from Jack Borski to make the score 1-0.

The rest of the game; however, would go entirely St. Olaf’s way. Just a few minutes after Maly’s goal, Olaf’s Nathan Swenson would score at the 39:13 mark.

Then, in the second half, David Anderson and Swenson again would score at the 59:21 and 66:42 marks respectively to make the final score of the match 3-1

UW-Oshkosh (7-1-1), who had seven shots, was led offensively by Evan Maly, Paul Beach and Andy Domer all with two shots; Andy Kohel would add the only other shot for the Titans on the night.

Goalkeeper Tim Gindville, who played all 90 minutes would save four, and allow three goals to 17 shots faced.

UW-Oshkosh continues action on Wednesday, Sept. 30th as they take on St. Norbert College from J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

Titans Stun 15th-Ranked Auggies With Early Goals

Brandon BrionesWill HowellJames PikeThe UW-Oshkosh men’s soccer team, ranked 21st in the nation, opened a 3-0 lead early and held off a late rally from 15th-ranked Augsburg College to win 3-2 in a match played Friday, Sept. 25th in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The game was the second meeting between the two teams, with Oshkosh now holding a 1-0-1 record in the series.

The Titans opened scoring on the night at the 8:20 mark, where Brandon Briones would punch in a header off of Paul Beach’s corner kick to make the score 1-0.

Later, Briones would score his second goal of the night at the 17:08 mark, when he gathered in a pass from Fedja Korjenic and shot a line drive into the goal from 35 yards out.

UW-Oshkosh’s final goal of the night came at the 37:01 mark, where Will Howell scored his sixth goal of the year, this one unassisted, from the top center of the box to make the halftime score 3-0 in favor of the Titans.

Augsburg (5-3-1) found their legs in the second half, as goals from DJ Wendell and Alex Hildebrandt at the 58:32 and 72:42 marks respectively, would cut the Oshkosh lead to 3-2, but the Titans’ defense would hold strong and keep the Auggies scoreless until the final gun.

The Titans (7-0-1) were led offensively by Musa Sowe with three shots and Will Howell and Brandon Briones with two shots apiece. Goalkeeper James Pike finished with seven saves to 19 shots faced.

UW-Oshkosh continues action on Sunday, Sept. 27th as they take on St. Olaf College from Northfield, Minnesota.

Late Penalty Kick Lifts Titans Past Falcons

Brandon BrionesWill HowellFedja KorjenicThe UW-Oshkosh men’s soccer team was challenged by the visiting Falcons of Concordia University-Wisconsin, but in the end, the Titans were able to take advantage of a late penalty kick, to post a 2-1 victory in a match held Monday (Sept. 21) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

The win was UW-Oshkosh’s seventh in the series, and fifth straight overall on the 2009 season

Fedja Korjenic (So. • Sarajevo, Bosnia) started the scoring for the night, when he would hit his fourth goal of the year, unassisted, at the 20:41 mark to give the Titans a 1-0 lead.

Concordia University Wisconsin would answer; however, at the 58 minute mark when Trevor Hess punched in a goal to tie the game at 1-1. This goal was the first given up by UW-Oshkosh goalkeepers in 397 minutes and 53 seconds.

Finally, despite strong pressure from the Falcons, Will Howell (Sr. • Waunakee) would be given the opportunity for a penalty kick off of a hand ball at the 77:08 mark. Howell’s shot sailed into the goal, and made the score 2-1.

UW-Oshkosh’s offense was led by Brandon Briones (Jr. • Menasha) and Tim Stadler (So. • Wauwatosa) with three shots and Korjenic with two.

The Titans (6-0-1) now travel to Minneapolis, Minn., for a showdown on Friday (Sept. 25) with nationally ranked Augsburg College (Minn.).

Titans' Defense Shines In Shutout Win Over Sabres

Brandon BrionesWill HowellFedja KorjenicThe defense of the UW-Oshkosh men's soccer team played to near perfection as the Titans posted to a 2-0 victory over Marian University on Wednesday (Sept. 16) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

The win was UW-Oshkosh's 11th straight over Marian University. It also was the Titans' third straight shutout victory and fourth of the season.

Will Howell (Sr. • Waunakee) started the scoring for the Titans at the 14:28 mark with a goal off of a penalty kick.

UW-Oshkosh's final score came at the 55:23 mark when Fedja Korjenic (So. • Sarajevo, Bosnia) followed passes from Robby Giljohann (So. • Pewaukee) and Mike Franzen (Jr. • Sussex) and kicked a shot in from 10 yards out.

UW-Oshkosh's defense shined and didn't allow a single shot the entire match. The Titans yielded just one corner kick, that coming in the 53rd minute of play.

Leading the offense for UW-Oshkosh were Brandon Briones (Jr. • Menasha) with five shots, Korjenic with four and Howell with three.

UW-Oshkosh (5-0-1) continues action against Concordia University Wisconsin on Monday, (Sept. 21). Action kicks off at 7 p.m. at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

Titans Conquer Pipers In Home Debut

Paul BeachWill HowellGreg JonesPaul Beach (Sr. • Prairie du Sac) scored goals with both his foot and head to lead the UW-Oshkosh men's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Hamline University (Minn.) on Saturday (Sept. 12) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

Beach gave UW-Oshkosh (3-0-1) a 1-0 advantage when he took a served ball from Andy Domer (Jr. • Brookfield) and kicked it into the goal just 8:08 into play. Beach then doubled the Titans' lead when he headed a passed ball from Greg Jones (Sr. • Milwaukee) and Andy Kohel (Jr. • Racine) into the net at the 58:01 mark of the match. The goals were the first and second of the season for Beach.

Will Howell (Sr. • Waunakee) sealed UW-Oshkosh's win over its first-time opponent by converting a direct kick from 30-yards out with 5:29 remaining. The goal was Howell's third of the season.

UW-Oshkosh launched 19 shots and eight corner kicks during its first home match of the 2009 season. The Titans were led by the three shots each of Beach, Jones and Robby Giljohann (So. • Pewaukee).

UW-Oshkosh held Hamline University (2-3) to just three shots, with two of them belonging to Drew Lukas. The Pipers went the 90-minute match without attempting a corner kick.

UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper James Pike (So. • Wauwatosa) saved three shots to earn his third career shutout. Zach Nelson stopped seven shots while protecting the Hamline University goal.

UW-Oshkosh will host Grinnell College (Iowa) on Sunday (Sept. 13) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

Titans Open Season With Shutout Of Crusaders

Jack BorskiWill HowellFedja KorjenicFour different players scored as UW-Oshkosh opened its 26th men's soccer season with a 4-0 victory Clarke College (Iowa) on Tuesday (Sept. 1) in Dubuque, Iowa.

UW-Oshkosh (1-0) put two shots into the net in each half, including Jack Borski's (Jr. • Madison) unassisted kick just 10:07 into play. Will Howell (Sr. • Waunakee) gave the Titans a 2-0 advantage when he scored off a corner kick from Andy Domer (Jr. • Brookfield) at the 32:01 mark of the game.

In the second half, UW-Oshkosh received goals from Devon Prideaux (Jr. • Eden Prairie, Minn.) and Fedja Korjenic (Sarajevo, Bosnia). Prideaux extended UW-Oshkosh's lead to 3-0 when he scored off passes from Korjenic and Howell at the 48:56 mark of the contest. Korjenic ended the Titans' scoring with help from Musa Sowe (Fr. • Gambia, West Africa) at the 64:46 mark of the match.

UW-Oshkosh attempted 17 shots, including four by Korjenic, three by Garrett O'Brien (So. • Shoreview, Minn.) and two by Borski. Clarke College (1-1) was held to just four shots, one each by Peter Bayliss, Mark Dismang, Scott Mestan and Matthew Smith. The Crusaders, who have lost all five of their matches with the Titans, had an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks.

UW-Oshkosh goalkeepers Tim Gindville (Jr. • New Lenox, Ill.) and James Pike (So. • Wauwatosa) had little work in the match as they combined to total one save. The lone save went to Gindville who played 61:46 of the contest.

Clarke College split its goal keeping duties as Luke Van Meveren played the first half and Charlie Fast the second. Fast saved three shots during his time of work and Van Meveren two.

UW-Oshkosh now turns its attention to road matches at Nebraska Wesleyan University on Saturday (Sept. 5) and Buena Vista University (Iowa) on Sunday (Sept. 6).

Titans Picked To Win WIAC's First Men's Soccer Title

UW-Oshkosh has been selected to capture the WIAC's first men's soccer championship according to a vote by the league's sports information directors.

This fall, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Platteville, UW-Superior, UW-Whitewater and affiliate member Finlandia University (Mich.) have joined forces and will compete in the WIAC's inaugural men's soccer season. The five schools will be eligible to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Championship.

UW-Oshkosh, which has reeled off 24 consecutive winning seasons and been a participant in 11 NCAA Division III postseason tournaments, received three first-place votes in the WIAC survey. UW-Platteville is picked to finish second in the league's championship race, UW-Whitewater third, UW-Superior fourth and Finlandia University fifth. UW-Platteville and UW-Whitewater both collected one first-place vote.

UW-Oshkosh posted an 11-5-2 record last season, including a 1-0 victory over UW-Superior, a 1-0 double overtime win over UW-Platteville and a scoreless double overtime tie with UW-Whitewater. The Titans own all-time records of 21-3 against UW-Platteville, 9-0 against UW-Superior and 15-7-3 against UW-Whitewater. UW-Oshkosh has never played Finlandia University, the only NCAA Division III men's soccer team in Michigan’s upper peninsula.

UW-Oshkosh welcomes back nine starters from last year's team, including defender Jack Borski (Jr. • Madison) and midfielder Will Howell (Sr. • Waunakee) who both received NCAA Division III All-North Central Region second team honors by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

The Titans kick off their 2009 campaign at Clarke College (Iowa) on Tuesday (Sept. 1). UW-Oshkosh's first home match is against Hamline University (Minn.) on Sept. 12.
