Top-ranked Trinity University (Texas) kept its 2007 record undamaged by posting a 2-1 victory over UW-Oshkosh in a third round match of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship held Saturday (Nov. 17) in St. Louis, Mo. Trinity University (21-0), the 2003 national champion, advances to take on 20th-ranked Washington University (Mo.) in a quarterfinal round contest of the 57-team tournament on Sunday (Nov. 18) in St. Louis, Mo. Washington University (16-4-2) moved to the quarterfinal round by edging Transylvania University (Ky.), 1-0, on Saturday in St. Louis. The winner between Trinity University and Washington University will proceed to a semifinal round match on Friday (Nov. 23) in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. Noe Casavova got Trinity University on the scoreboard 17 minutes, 19 seconds into play as he took a cross from Joe Houchins and one-timed it past UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Derek Christiansen (Sr. • Cedarburg) for his seventh goal of the season. University all year. Trinity University dominated play in the second half, outshooting UW-Oshkosh, 12-2. Christiansen made six of his 11 saves in the second half to keep the Titans at a one-goal deficit. Christiansen finished the match with 11 saves, while David Steinberg made four saves in earning the victory for Trinity University and helping the Tigers snap the Titans' seven-game winning streak. Trinity University attempted 21 shots in the contest, including four by both Patrick Floeck and Ben Stewart. The Tigers, who entered the game averaging a NCAA Division III-leading 4.15 goals per match, launched six corner kicks. UW-Oshkosh was held to seven shots, the Titans' third-lowest total of the season, and three corner kicks. Ryan Compty (Sr. • Mukwonago) paced UW-Oshkosh with two shots. The 2007 campaign marked UW-Oshkosh's 23rd consecutive winning season, the ninth-longest streak in NCAA Division III history. |
Christiansen, a goalkeeper, and Zillmer, a defender, were both voted to the squad as second team selections. The 11-member first team included two representatives from Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.), goalkeeper Trevor Brown and midfielder Jack Underwood. Christiansen has started all 18 matches that he has played in for UW-Oshkosh this season. He has allowed just 10 goals in 1,591 minutes played for a 0.57 goals against average. Christiansen has recorded 10 shutouts, including a pair in UW-Oshkosh's current NCAA Division III postseason run. Christiansen has guarded the goal in 54 of UW-Oshkosh's 73 matches the past four seasons. He has permitted just 41 goals in 4,632 minutes played for a 0.80 goals against average. Christiansen's career accomplishments also include a 31-13-5 record and 24 shutouts. In 2006, Christiansen started all 17 matches that he played in and allowed 15 goals in 1,529 minutes for a 0.88 goals against average. In 2005, Christiansen started 13 of the 16 contests that he played in and yielded 16 goals in 1,413 minutes for a 1.02 goals against average. In 2004, Christiansen appeared in three games and posted a 0.00 goals against average in 98 minutes played. Christiansen owns a 3.66 cumulative grade point average as a chemistry major. Zillmer has started 17 of the 18 contests that he has played in for UW-Oshkosh this season. He has tallied two assists while helping limit UW-Oshkosh's opponents to just 11 goals, 150 shots and 72 corner kicks. Zillmer has played in 61 matches the past four seasons, including 55 as a starter. He has counted four career points on four assists. In 2006, Zillmer started all 17 matches that he played in and recorded one assist. In 2005, Zillmer started 13 of the 15 contests that he played in and went scoreless. In 2004, Zillmer started eight of the 11 games that he participated in and compiled one assist. Zillmer owns a 3.85 cumulative grade point average as a criminal justice major. The All-District V team is comprised of NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA student-athletes from Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Minnesota. First team members from each of the eight districts advance to the national ballot for All-America consideration. UW-Oshkosh's 11th appearance in the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship continues when the Titans face Trinity University (Texas) at 11 a.m. on Saturday (Nov. 17) in St. Louis, Mo. UW-Oshkosh and Trinity University will play in the first semifinal of the St. Louis Sectional, while host Washington University meets Transylvania University (Ky.) at 1:30 p.m. The winner of each contest will battle at 1 p.m. on Sunday (Nov. 18) for the right to advance to the national semifinals on Nov. 23 in Orlando, Fla. All three matches in St. Louis will be held at Francis Field on the campus of Washington University. Trinity University enters the St. Louis Sectional as the top-ranked team in the NCAA Division III by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Washington University is ranked 20th in the same poll. UW-Oshkosh (17-2-1) advanced to the St. Louis Sectional by posting 2-0 victories over Wartburg College (Iowa) on Nov. 9 and Whitworth University (Wash.) on Nov. 10 in Oshkosh. The Titans are seeking their fourth visit to the national semifinals, with previous visits in 1994, 2000 and 2003. Trinity University (20-0) has submitted a pair of commanding performances so far this NCAA Division III postseason. The Tigers beat the University of Texas-Dallas, 3-0, on Nov. 7 and Principia College (Ill.), 4-0, on Nov. 10. Both contests were held in San Antonio, Texas. Washington University (15-4-2) advances to play on its home pitch after picking up wins over Carthage College (Wis.) and 24th-ranked Dominican University (Ill.) in Whitewater, Wis. The Bears edged Carthage College, 2-1, on Nov. 10 and trimmed Dominican University, 1-0 in overtime, on Nov. 11. Transylvania University (15-2-3) has won both of this year's tournament games on shootouts. The Pioneers tied regional host Ohio Wesleyan University, 1-1, on Nov. 9 and advanced to the second round with a 6-5 win on penalty kicks. The next day, Transylvania University and John Carroll University (Ohio) played to a scoreless tie before the Pioneers moved on with a 4-3 victory on penalty kicks. UW-Oshkosh

Keller Field at Titan Stadium. The victory advances UW-Oshkosh (17-2-1) to a third round contest against top-ranked Trinity University (Texas) at 11 a.m. on Saturday (Nov. 17) in St. Louis, Mo. Miller put UW-Oshkosh in the proper direction by sending a deflected ball off a cross into the goal at the 12:56 mark of the match. Miller, who tallied two goals in the Titans' 2-0 victory over Wartburg College (Iowa) on Friday (Nov. 9), scored his sixth goal of the season on assists by Paul Beach (So. • Prairie du Sac) and Brandon Briones (Fr. • Menasha). Whitworth University thought it had gained an equalizing goal with 2:19 left in the first half, but the score was disallowed because the Pirates were called offsides on the play. UW-Oshkosh maintained its one-goal advantage until Jones took a cross from Beach and scored his sixth goal of the year with just 5:05 to play. UW-Oshkosh overcame disadvantages of 16-8 in shots and 12-1 corner kicks to defeat Wartburg College (Iowa), 2-0, in a first round match of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship held Friday (Nov. 9) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium. The victory advances UW-Oshkosh (16-2-1) to a second round contest against Whitworth University (Wash.) at 6 p.m. on Saturday (Nov. 10) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium. Whitworth University (15-3-1) qualified for its match with the Titans by edging Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.), 2-1 in overtime, on Friday at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium. Saturday's game will be the first between UW-Oshkosh and Whitworth University.
