2007 Highlights

Titans Return Home From Sixth European Tour

The UW-Oshkosh men’s soccer team completed its sixth international tour on May 29. The Titans played a collection of exhibition matches and a tournament during their 11-day trip to the Netherlands.

The competition included squaring off against highly regarded Under-23 squads from top professional clubs, including Vitesse and FC Haarlem. UW-Oshkosh fared quite well, winning five of eight matches. One of the main reasons for the trip was to seek out this high level of competition.

“I was very pleased with how the players fully engaged themselves during this trip both on and off the field," UW-Oshkosh head coach Toby Bares said. "They've dealt with the ups and downs of international matches and travel in the best of spirits. And, they served as excellent ambassadors for our University and state."

Bares’ special connection with the Netherlands is via Ton de Hoop, a Dutch national staff soccer instructor. Bares began his association with de Hoop more than 20 years ago, resulting in the extremely popular Winning Mood Soccer camp still held each summer at UW-Oshkosh.

"I've really enjoyed the competition," said Mason Eddy (So. • Pulaski). "Adjusting to the different styles of play is challenging but fun. Overall, I'd say I'm most impressed with how the best teams quickly take advantage of mistakes made. If you’re not careful, you pay for a mistake by picking the ball out of the back of your net!”

"It's been very interesting seeing another part of the world and finding out we all have a lot in common. The people here have been great," Clay Ransom (Jr. • Elgin, Ill.) said.

The Titans’ first international soccer tour took place in 1993.

Does Coach Bares see a seventh tour on the horizon in 2011? “Why not? It’s a big world out there! But, it seems to be getting smaller all the time,” the long-time Titan mentor replied.

UW-Oshkosh begins its 25th season this fall, with training camp opening on August 17.

Titans To Make Sixth European Tour

UW-Oshkosh head men's soccer coach Toby Bares and his squad of 21 players leave for Amsterdam, Netherlands on May 19. The Titans arrive the next morning in Europe to begin their 11-day odyssey. This marks UW-Oshkosh’s sixth international tour. The team previously made trips in 1993, 1996, 1999, 2002 and 2005.

During their stay, the Titans will play five exhibition matches, including the daunting challenge of facing highly regarded Under-23 squads from top professional clubs Vitesse and FC Haarlem. Vitesse and FC Haarlem both compete in leagues that include powerhouses Ajax Amsterdam and PSV Eindhoven.

One of the main reasons for the trip is to face an elite level of competition. "I'd hate to fly 4,000 miles and not be challenged," Bares said. "The teams we play will demand nothing but the very best from us, so that should be exciting as well as rewarding."

Plans have also been made for sightseeing and numerous cultural exchange opportunities. Bares feels that a significant benefit of the trip doesn't take place on the playing field.

"The players really get a chance to broaden their horizons by immersing themselves in another culture in another part of the world, as well as serving as good-will ambassadors for our University and state," Bares said.

Bares mentioned that his players will keep a journal of their travel experiences. "We're fortunate that soccer is such an international sport. It’s really a universal language that can help one get around nearly anywhere around the world."

Bares' special connection with the Netherlands comes via Ton de Hoop, who is a national KNVB (Dutch national soccer federation) staff instructor and a professor at the post-secondary CIOS Institute in Arnhem. Bares began his association with de Hoop more than 20 years ago, resulting in the extremely popular Winning Mood Soccer camp held each summer at UW-Oshkosh. De Hoop brings along his top graduates who have earned professional coaching licenses to provide the instruction for the camp.

The connection with de Hoop has served Bares well. "Ever since the first trip in 1993, it has been our goal to return every three years. It has become part of our men’s soccer program’s tradition. The current players kept hearing from the guys who made the previous tour about how rewarding their experience was. Some of them have been planning and waiting for this for a couple years now," Bares said.

Bares expects some lively debates with his Dutch counterparts regarding the caliber of soccer in the United States.

“The Dutch used to be very cynical toward American soccer, but I have noticed that U.S. soccer is gaining a little more respect with every passing year.” Bares notes that a current U.S. national team player, Michael Bradley, led all midfielders in scoring this season playing for SV Heerenveen. SV Heerenveen finished fifth in the top division of Dutch professional soccer.

The Titans return to the United States on May 29.

Four Titans Receive All-North Central Region Status

Four members of the UW-Oshkosh men's soccer team have been named 2007 NCAA Division III All-North Central Region performers by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Goalkeeper Derek Christiansen (Sr. • Cedarburg) and defender Shaun Gallagher (Sr. • Mukwonago) were selected to the first team, while defender Alex Minten (Sr. • Sturgeon Bay) was voted to the second team and midfielder Will Howell (So. • Waunakee) to the third. It was the first all-region award for all four UW-Oshkosh players.

A total of 33 players were chosen to the three All-North Central Region teams, including four from both UW-Oshkosh and Dominican University (Ill.). Aurora University (Ill.), Carroll College, Carthage College, UW-Whitewater and Wheaton College (Ill.) all had three honorees.

Christiansen played in 19 matches this past fall and allowed just 12 goals in 1,681 minutes played for a 0.64 goals against average. He also compiled a 15-3-1 won-lost record, 10 shutouts and 68 saves. Christiansen's goals against averaged ranked 23rd in the NCAA Division III.

Christiansen posted a 32-14-5 record while appearing in 55 contests for the Titans from 2004-07. He allowed 43 goals in 4,722 minutes played for a 0.82 goals against average. Christiansen's career totals also included 24 shutouts and 164 saves.

Gallagher saw action in all 21 matches this past season and totaled two goals and six assists for 10 points. He had one goal and one assist as UW-Oshkosh registered wins of 6-0 over Lawrence University and 4-1 over UW-Superior.

Overall, Gallagher played in 69 contests for UW-Oshkosh from 2004-07. His career statistical totals included 14 goals and 13 assists for 41 points.

Minten also participated in all 21 matches this year. He totaled five goals and two assists for 12 points. Minten had one goal and one assist as the Titans marked wins of 4-0 over Marian College and 6-0 over Lawrence University. He also scored the Titans' lone goal in their 2-1 loss to Trinity University (Texas) in the third round of the NCAA Division III Championship.

Minten played in 68 matches as a member of the Titans from 2004-07. His career resume includes seven goals and six assists for 20 points.

Howell was another player who appeared in all 21 matches this past season. He totaled five goals and six assists for 16 points, including one goal and one assist during UW-Oshkosh's 4-1 victory over UW-Whitewater.

Howell's first season with the Titans was the 2006 campaign. He played in 15 matches that year and totaled two goals and three assists for seven points.

All four UW-Oshkosh all-region selections were instrumental in helping the Titans compile a 17-3-1 record and advance to the third round of the NCAA Division III Championship. UW-Oshkosh allowed just 13 goals and shut out 13 of its 21 opponents this past year to extend its string of consecutive winning seasons to 23, the ninth-longest streak in NCAA Division III history.

Titans' NCAA Postseason March

Top-ranked Trinity University (Texas) kept its 2007 record undamaged by posting a 2-1 victory over UW-Oshkosh in a third round match of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship held Saturday (Nov. 17) in St. Louis, Mo.

Trinity University (21-0), the 2003 national champion, advances to take on 20th-ranked Washington University (Mo.) in a quarterfinal round contest of the 57-team tournament on Sunday (Nov. 18) in St. Louis, Mo. Washington University (16-4-2) moved to the quarterfinal round by edging Transylvania University (Ky.), 1-0, on Saturday in St. Louis. The winner between Trinity University and Washington University will proceed to a semifinal round match on Friday (Nov. 23) in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

Noe Casavova got Trinity University on the scoreboard 17 minutes, 19 seconds into play as he took a cross from Joe Houchins and one-timed it past UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Derek Christiansen (Sr. • Cedarburg) for his seventh goal of the season.

UW-Oshkosh, playing in its 11th NCAA Division III Championship, refused to go away as Alex Minten (Sr. • Sturgeon Bay) headed home a cross from Paul Beach (So. • Prairie du Sac) at the 32:31 mark of the match. The goal was Minten's fifth of the season and just the ninth allowed by Trinity University all year.

Trinity University, though, answered right back six minutes later as Casanova’s free kick from 30 yards out was headed in by Tyrone Petrakis for the match-winning goal. It was the ninth goal of the season for Petrakis.

Trinity University dominated play in the second half, outshooting UW-Oshkosh, 12-2. Christiansen made six of his 11 saves in the second half to keep the Titans at a one-goal deficit.

Christiansen finished the match with 11 saves, while David Steinberg made four saves in earning the victory for Trinity University and helping the Tigers snap the Titans' seven-game winning streak.

Trinity University attempted 21 shots in the contest, including four by both Patrick Floeck and Ben Stewart. The Tigers, who entered the game averaging a NCAA Division III-leading 4.15 goals per match, launched six corner kicks.

UW-Oshkosh was held to seven shots, the Titans' third-lowest total of the season, and three corner kicks. Ryan Compty (Sr. • Mukwonago) paced UW-Oshkosh with two shots.

The 2007 campaign marked UW-Oshkosh's 23rd consecutive winning season, the ninth-longest streak in NCAA Division III history.

Christiansen, Zillmer
Receive Academic All-District Honors

UW-Oshkosh's Derek Christiansen (Sr. • Cedarburg) and Kiel Zillmer (Sr. • Mukwonago) have been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V Men's Soccer Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Christiansen, a goalkeeper, and Zillmer, a defender, were both voted to the squad as second team selections.

The 11-member first team included two representatives from Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.), goalkeeper Trevor Brown and midfielder Jack Underwood.

Christiansen has started all 18 matches that he has played in for UW-Oshkosh this season. He has allowed just 10 goals in 1,591 minutes played for a 0.57 goals against average. Christiansen has recorded 10 shutouts, including a pair in UW-Oshkosh's current NCAA Division III postseason run.

Christiansen has guarded the goal in 54 of UW-Oshkosh's 73 matches the past four seasons. He has permitted just 41 goals in 4,632 minutes played for a 0.80 goals against average. Christiansen's career accomplishments also include a 31-13-5 record and 24 shutouts.

In 2006, Christiansen started all 17 matches that he played in and allowed 15 goals in 1,529 minutes for a 0.88 goals against average. In 2005, Christiansen started 13 of the 16 contests that he played in and yielded 16 goals in 1,413 minutes for a 1.02 goals against average. In 2004, Christiansen appeared in three games and posted a 0.00 goals against average in 98 minutes played.

Christiansen owns a 3.66 cumulative grade point average as a chemistry major.

Zillmer has started 17 of the 18 contests that he has played in for UW-Oshkosh this season. He has tallied two assists while helping limit UW-Oshkosh's opponents to just 11 goals, 150 shots and 72 corner kicks.

Zillmer has played in 61 matches the past four seasons, including 55 as a starter. He has counted four career points on four assists.

In 2006, Zillmer started all 17 matches that he played in and recorded one assist. In 2005, Zillmer started 13 of the 15 contests that he played in and went scoreless. In 2004, Zillmer started eight of the 11 games that he participated in and compiled one assist.

Zillmer owns a 3.85 cumulative grade point average as a criminal justice major.

The All-District V team is comprised of NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA student-athletes from Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Minnesota. First team members from each of the eight districts advance to the national ballot for All-America consideration.

UW-Oshkosh takes its 17-2-1 record into Saturday's (Nov. 17) NCAA Division III postseason match against top-ranked Trinity University (Texas). The third round contest will be played at 11 a.m. in St. Louis, Mo.

Titans To Face Top-Ranked Tigers
In Third Round Of NCAA Championship

UW-Oshkosh's 11th appearance in the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship continues when the Titans face Trinity University (Texas) at 11 a.m. on Saturday (Nov. 17) in St. Louis, Mo.

UW-Oshkosh and Trinity University will play in the first semifinal of the St. Louis Sectional, while host Washington University meets Transylvania University (Ky.) at 1:30 p.m. The winner of each contest will battle at 1 p.m. on Sunday (Nov. 18) for the right to advance to the national semifinals on Nov. 23 in Orlando, Fla. All three matches in St. Louis will be held at Francis Field on the campus of Washington University.

Trinity University enters the St. Louis Sectional as the top-ranked team in the NCAA Division III by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Washington University is ranked 20th in the same poll.

UW-Oshkosh (17-2-1) advanced to the St. Louis Sectional by posting 2-0 victories over Wartburg College (Iowa) on Nov. 9 and Whitworth University (Wash.) on Nov. 10 in Oshkosh. The Titans are seeking their fourth visit to the national semifinals, with previous visits in 1994, 2000 and 2003.

Trinity University (20-0) has submitted a pair of commanding performances so far this NCAA Division III postseason. The Tigers beat the University of Texas-Dallas, 3-0, on Nov. 7 and Principia College (Ill.), 4-0, on Nov. 10. Both contests were held in San Antonio, Texas.

Washington University (15-4-2) advances to play on its home pitch after picking up wins over Carthage College (Wis.) and 24th-ranked Dominican University (Ill.) in Whitewater, Wis. The Bears edged Carthage College, 2-1, on Nov. 10 and trimmed Dominican University, 1-0 in overtime, on Nov. 11.

Transylvania University (15-2-3) has won both of this year's tournament games on shootouts. The Pioneers tied regional host Ohio Wesleyan University, 1-1, on Nov. 9 and advanced to the second round with a 6-5 win on penalty kicks. The next day, Transylvania University and John Carroll University (Ohio) played to a scoreless tie before the Pioneers moved on with a 4-3 victory on penalty kicks.

UW-Oshkosh did not play Trinity University, Transylvania University or Washington University during the regular season. The Titans own all-time records of 1-2 against Trinity University and 3-3 against Washington University. A contest against Transylvania University would be the first for UW-Oshkosh.

Titans Take Out Pirates
To Extend NCAA Postseason Journey

Brian Miller (So. • Chippewa Falls) and Greg Jones (So. • Milwaukee) scored goals as UW-Oshkosh kept its season alive by defeating Whitworth University (Wash.), 2-0, in a second round match of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship held Saturday (Nov. 10) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

The victory advances UW-Oshkosh (17-2-1) to a third round contest against top-ranked Trinity University (Texas) at 11 a.m. on Saturday (Nov. 17) in St. Louis, Mo. Trinity University (20-0) battles the Titans after posting a 3-0 victory over Principia College (Ill.) on Saturday in San Antonio, Texas.

Miller put UW-Oshkosh in the proper direction by sending a deflected ball off a cross into the goal at the 12:56 mark of the match. Miller, who tallied two goals in the Titans' 2-0 victory over Wartburg College (Iowa) on Friday (Nov. 9), scored his sixth goal of the season on assists by Paul Beach (So. • Prairie du Sac) and Brandon Briones (Fr. • Menasha).

Whitworth University thought it had gained an equalizing goal with 2:19 left in the first half, but the score was disallowed because the Pirates were called offsides on the play.

UW-Oshkosh maintained its one-goal advantage until Jones took a cross from Beach and scored his sixth goal of the year with just 5:05 to play.

UW-Oshkosh attempted 11 shots, including two each by Jones, Miller, Ryan Compty (Sr. • Mukwonago) and Will Howell (So. • Waunakee). The Titans had four corner kicks.

Whitworth University (15-4-1), a first-time opponent of UW-Oshkosh, was held to just seven shots and three corner kicks. Elly Bulega, Matt Friesen and John Prugh each had two shots to lead the Pirates.

UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Derek Christiansen (Sr. • Cedarburg) racked up his 10th shutout of the season by saving three shots. The Titans also had a defender record a save.

Whitworth University goalkeeper Scott Barnum allowed two goals and made two saves.

Titans Slay Knights In NCAA Postseason Opener

UW-Oshkosh overcame disadvantages of 16-8 in shots and 12-1 corner kicks to defeat Wartburg College (Iowa), 2-0, in a first round match of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship held Friday (Nov. 9) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

The victory advances UW-Oshkosh (16-2-1) to a second round contest against Whitworth University (Wash.) at 6 p.m. on Saturday (Nov. 10) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

Whitworth University (15-3-1) qualified for its match with the Titans by edging Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.), 2-1 in overtime, on Friday at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium. Saturday's game will be the first between UW-Oshkosh and Whitworth University.

Against Wartburg College, UW-Oshkosh scored both of its goals courtesy of Brian Miller (So. • Chippewa Falls). Miller gave the Titans a 1-0 lead when he scored on an assisted goal by Will Howell (So. • Waunakee) and Jack Borski (Fr. • Madison) at the 39:36 mark of the match. UW-Oshkosh doubled its advantage when Miller scored an unassisted goal with just 1:29 to play. The goals were Miller's fourth and fifth of the season.

UW-Oshkosh's eight shots included three by Miller and two by Adam Grant (Jr. • Green Bay).

Wartburg College's 23 shots included five by Luke McClyman and four by Geoff Miller.

UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Derek Christiansen (Sr. • Cedarburg) stopped six shots to record his ninth shutout of the season and the 23rd of his career. Christiansen has allowed just 10 goals in his 1,501 minutes played this season.

Wartburg College had two players guard its goal as Trent Michael participated for 60:22 of the match and Matt Shepard for 29:48. Michael allowed one goal and made two saves, while Shepard allowed one goal without having to make a save.

Titans Knock Off Nationally-Ranked Warhawks

Will Howell The UW-Oshkosh men's soccer team enhanced its chances at receiving a NCAA Division III postseason bid by defeating nationally-ranked UW-Whitewater, 4-1, on Saturday (Nov. 3) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

UW-Oshkosh (15-2-1) broke a scoreless deadlock with four unanswered goals to start the second half.

UW-Oshkosh grabbed a 1-0 lead when Alex Minten (Sr. • Sturgeon Bay) took a direct kick from Will Howell (So. • Waunakee) and scored his fourth goal of the season at the 46:09 mark of the match.

The Titans extended their advantage to 2-0 when Adam Grant (Jr. • Green Bay) took a pass from Greg Jones (So. • Milwaukee) and scored his fifth goal of the season at the 53:54 mark of the game. It was the third match-winning goal of the season for Grant.

Six minutes later, Brandon Briones (Fr. • Menasha) sailed his team-leading 11th goal of the season into the net to give UW-Oshkosh a 3-0 lead. Briones came off assists by Shaun Gallagher (Sr. • Mukwonago) and Paul Beach (So. • Prairie du Sac) at the 59:45 mark of the contest.

UW-Oshkosh closed its scoring on a penalty kick by Howell at the 69:00 mark of the game. The goal was Howell's fifth of the year.

UW-Whitewater (15-2-2), which entered the contest ranked 11th in the NCAA Division III by D3Kicks.com and 13th by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, scored its lone goal against UW-Oshkosh with 2:51 to play. The Warhawks scored when Ben Volz headed a pass from Jeff Derer into the net at the 87:09 mark of the match.

UW-Oshkosh outshot UW-Whitewater, 13-2. Grant led the Titans with three shots, while Volz paced the Warhawks with two. UW-Whitewater had a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.

UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Derek Christiansen (Sr. • Cedarburg) allowed one goal and made two saves. UW-Whitewater goalkeeper E.J. Sesselmann yielded four goals and made five saves.

UW-Whitewater entered the match having allowed just eight goals in its previous 18 contests.

UW-Oshkosh, which increased its advantage in the all-time series with UW-Whitewater to 15-7-2, has allowed just 11 goals in its 18 matches played this year.

Both teams concluded their regular season with Saturday's match. Both teams are also expected to have their 2007 campaign continue when the NCAA Division III announces its postseason tournament field on Monday (Nov. 5).

Titans Put Falcons To Rest

Derek Christiansen (Sr. • Cedarburg) made four saves to record his 22nd career shutout as the UW-Oshkosh men's soccer team posted a 3-0 victory over Concordia University Wisconsin on Friday (Oct. 26) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

Christiansen blocked two shots in each half to keep a Concordia University Wisconsin squad that averaged three goals per match off the scoreboard. The shutout was Christiansen's eighth of the season and the Titans' 11th.

UW-Oshkosh (14-2-1) scored all of its goals in the second half, including Clayton Ransom's (Jr. • St. Charles, Ill.) match winner at the 48:46 mark of the contest. Ransom's seventh goal of the season was assisted by Devon Prideaux (Fr. • Eden Prairie, Minn.).

The Titans doubled their advantage when Adam Grant (Jr. • Green Bay) scored on an assisted goal by Brian Miller (So. • Chippewa Falls) and Jack Borski (Fr. • Madison) at the 69:15 mark of the game. The goal was Grant's fourth of the season.

UW-Oshkosh capped its scoring on Greg Jones' (So. • Milwaukee) fifth goal of the season at the 85:15 mark of the match. Borski and Christiansen were credited with assists on Jones' goal.

UW-Oshkosh totaled 18 shots, including 13 in the second half, and three corner kicks. Grant and Jones led the Titans with four shots each.

Concordia University Wisconsin (11-6-1) compiled six shots and two corner kicks. Brian Nord, who entered the contest with a NCAA Division III-leading 27 goals on the season, attempted three shots to lead the Falcons.

Concordia University Wisconsin goalkeeper Tom Anderson allowed three goals and made five saves.

UW-Oshkosh snapped a two-match losing streak to Concordia University Wisconsin with the victory. The Titans lead the all-time series between the two combatants by a 6-3-3 tally.

Titans Clobber Red Hawks

Eric Minten The UW-Oshkosh men's soccer team continued its domination of Ripon College by posting a 7-0 victory over the Red Hawks on Tuesday (Oct. 23) in Ripon.

UW-Oshkosh, which recorded a season high for goals scored, improved to 22-0-2 in its 24 meetings with Ripon College.

UW-Oshkosh's scoring parade started early as Brian Miller (So. • Chippewa Falls) and Brandon Briones (Fr. • Menasha) tallied goals in the first seven minutes of play. Miller gave the Titans a 1-0 lead when he scored on an assisted goal by Briones and Jeff Pernitz (Jr. • Cross Plains) at the 6:35 mark of the contest. Twenty seconds later, Briones put UW-Oshkosh ahead 2-0 when he scored on an assisted goal by Greg Jones (So. • Milwaukee) and Shaun Gallagher (Sr. • Mukwonago).

The Titans (13-2-1) went to intermission leading 3-0 when Clayton Ransom (Jr. • St. Charles, Ill.) scored on an assisted goal by Miller at the 38:20 mark of the match.

After the break, Briones took passes from David Frey (So. • Stoughton) and Alex Lanser (So. • Port Washington) and scored again at the 68:59 of the match.

UW-Oshkosh made it a five-goal advantage when Lanser scored on a penalty kick at the 74:23 mark of the contest.

Eric Minten (Fr. • Sturgeon Bay) closed UW-Oshkosh's scoring with goals at the 79:59 and 89:22 marks of the game. Eric Minten's first goal was assisted by Pernitz and Devon Prideaux (Fr. • Eden Prairie, Minn.). Credited with assists on Eric Minten's second goal were Jones and Prideaux.

Briones leads UW-Oshkosh with 10 goals on the season, while Ransom has six, Miller three, Eric Minten two and Lanser one.

UW-Oshkosh attempted 22 shots, including four by Alex Minten (Sr. • Sturgeon Bay). Ripon College was held to just three shots, one each by Kris Hanson, Andrew McKee and Chris Quillman.

UW-Oshkosh recorded its 10th shutout of the season as goalkeepers Derek Christiansen (Sr. • Cedarburg) and Tim Gindville (Fr. • New Lenox, Ill.) played 56:49 and 33:11, respectively. Christiansen had the Titans' lone save.

Ripon College (4-8-3) also had two players guard its goal as Matt Schultz played 34 minutes and Bob Bradbury 56. Schultz allowed two goals and made one save, while Bradbury yielded five goals and made five saves.

The UW-Oshkosh men’s soccer team posted its eighth shutout in 11 matches and ninth of the season in a 1-0 victory over Edgewood College on Saturday (Oct. 20) in Madison.

Adam Grant (Jr. • Green Bay) scored an unassisted goal in the 25th minute of play to lead the Titans (12-2-1) to the victory. It was Grant’s third goal of the season, including his second match winner.

UW-Oshkosh attempted 14 shots and four corner kicks during a contest marred by 42 fouls and three yellow cards. Will Howell (So. • Waunakee) took four shots and Paul Beach (So. • Prairie du Sac) three to lead the Titans.

Edgewood College (8-6) totaled eight shots and six corner kicks. Anthony Colletti, Tyler Duellman and Kevin Fisher attempted two shots each for the Eagles.

UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Derek Christiansen (Sr. • Cedarburg) made two saves to earn his 21st career shutout. He has allowed just nine goals in 1,174 minutes played this season for a 0.69 goals against average.

Edgewood College goalkeeper Francisco Yacuta-Santana made five saves while allowing the decisive goal.

UW-Oshkosh has won its last eight matches against Edgewood College to lead the all-time series by a 10-1 tally.

Titans Hook Muskies

David Frey (So. • Stoughton), Will Howell (So. • Waunakee) and Brandon Briones (Fr. • Menasha) each tallied goals as the UW-Oshkosh men's soccer team reeled in a 3-0 victory over Lakeland College on Monday (Oct. 15) in Sheboygan.

UW-Oshkosh (11-2-1) took control of the contest early by scoring twice in the first 23 minutes of play.

Frey gave UW-Oshkosh a 1-0 lead when he received a pass from Ryan Compty (Sr. • Mukwonago) and scored his first collegiate goal at the 12:40 mark of the match. Howell then increased the Titans' advantage to 2-0 by scoring off assists from Brian Miller (So. • Chippewa Falls) and Shaun Gallagher (Sr. • Mukwonago) at the 22:29 mark of the game. The goal was Howell's fourth of the season.

UW-Oshkosh concluded its scoring with a goal by Briones at the 78:21 mark of the match. Briones' team-leading eighth goal of the season was assisted by Greg Jones (So. • Milwaukee).

UW-Oshkosh attempted 17 shots, including three by both Briones and Frey. The Titans had two corner kicks.

Lakeland College (1-11) was held to just two shots, both by Ryan Malo. The Muskies had one corner kick.

UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Derek Christiansen (Sr. • Cedarburg) went without a save as he recorded his 20th career shutout. Lakeland College goalkeeper Brook Winkler allowed all three goals and made four saves.

UW-Oshkosh has won five of its six meetings with Lakeland College.

Titans Suffer Just Second Loss Of Season

The Wheaton College (Ill.) men’s soccer team scored three late goals to pull away and tally a 4-1 victory over UW-Oshkosh on Saturday (Oct. 13) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

Wheaton College (9-2-1) extended its winning streak to six consecutive matches with the victory, while UW-Oshkosh (10-2-1) had its eight-game unbeaten streak (7-0-1 record) snapped with the loss. The Titans entered the contest as the 21st-ranked team in the NCAA Division III by D3Kicks.com.

Steve Poppe gave Wheaton College a 1-0 lead when he scored an unassisted goal 29:04 into the match. The Thunder held its one-goal advantage throughout the remainder of the first half.

Will Howell (So. • Waunakee) then tied the score for UW-Oshkosh with a goal on a penalty kick at the 71:45 mark of the match. The goal was Howell’s third of the season.

Approximately five minutes later, Strider Elass began a Wheaton College scoring spree with his unassisted goal at the 76:48 mark of the match. Joel DeLass then added an unassisted goal at the 78:20 mark of the contest to give the Thunder a 3-1 lead. Wheaton College extended its advantage to 4-1 when Ben Theimer scored off an assist from Elass at the 84:54 mark of the game.

Wheaton College, which has gone 11-5-2 in its 18 meetings with UW-Oshkosh, totaled 12 shots and five corner kicks. Elass and Jason VanderVeen both fired three shots to pace the Thunder. UW-Oshkosh compiled six shots, including four by Howell, and two corner kicks.

UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Derek Christiansen (Sr. • Cedarburg) allowed four goals and made three saves. Wheaton College goalkeeper B.J. Dons yielded just one goal and made four saves.

Titans, Spartans Settle For Tie

The differences between the UW-Oshkosh and Aurora University (Ill.) men’s soccer teams went unsolved for the second consecutive year as the two squads battled to a 1-1 double overtime tie on Sunday (Oct. 7) in Aurora, Ill.

UW-Oshkosh (10-1-1), which entered the contest as the 25th-ranked team in the NCAA Division III by D3Kicks.com, had its seven-match winning streak snapped with the tie. UW-Oshkosh and Aurora University (7-2-3) fought to a scoreless double overtime tie a year ago.

The first half saw UW-Oshkosh mainly in Aurora University territory as the Titans fired 11 shots, including five of which were on goal. The Spartans launched five shots in the opening period, with only one being on goal.

The scoring started in the second half when UW-Oshkosh’s Greg Jones (So. • Milwaukee) took a pass from Paul Beach (So. • Prairie du Sac) and sent a shot into the goal at the 56:54 mark of the match. The goal was the fourth of the season for Jones.

Twelve minutes later, Aurora University tied the score on a goal by Danny May. Credited with an assist on May’s goal at the 68:59 mark of the game was Brian Barnett.

The two overtime periods went scoreless despite three shots and one corner kick by Aurora University in the first session and five shots and one corner kick by UW-Oshkosh in the second.

UW-Oshkosh finished the contest with 22 shots, including four each by Brandon Briones (Fr. • Menasha) and Will Howell (So. • Waunakee). Aurora University attempted 13 shots, including four by Joey Catrino and three by Chase Corricelli.

Goalkeepers Derek Christiansen (Sr. • Cedarburg) of UW-Oshkosh and Matt Ness of Aurora University played the entire 110 minutes of the match. Christiansen totaled five saves for the Titans, while Ness compiled 11 for the Spartans.

The contest, played in a temperature of 90 degrees, featured seven yellow cards and 30 fouls.

UW-Oshkosh owns a 9-1-3 advantage in the all-time series with Aurora University.

Titans Win Seventh Straight Match

Despite being outshot, 11-4, the UW-Oshkosh men’s soccer team still managed to record a 2-0 victory over Illinois Wesleyan University on Friday (Oct. 5) in Bloomington, Ill. It was the seventh straight win for the Titans, who entered the contest as the 25th ranked team in the NCAA Division III by D3Kicks.com.

Clayton Ransom (Jr. • St. Charles, Ill.) gave UW-Oshkosh (10-1) the lead for good when he took a pass from Will Howell (So. • Waunakee) and scored at the 18:35 mark of the match. The goal was Ransom’s fifth of the season.

UW-Oshkosh doubled its advantage when Adam Grant (Jr. • Green Bay) delivered a successful free kick at the 54:57 mark of the game. It was the second goal of the year for Grant.

UW-Oshkosh’s shot total featured the goals by Ransom and Grant and attempts by Howell and Ryan Compty (Sr. • Mukwonago). Illinois Wesleyan University’s shot total included three by Colin Aubin and two by Ikenna Odinaka.

Illinois Wesleyan University goalkeeper Frankie Gorg allowed two goals and made one save.

UW-Oshkosh is unbeaten in its four meetings with Illinois Wesleyan University (3-8). All four victories by UW-Oshkosh over Illinois Wesleyan University have been by a shutout.

Titans Apprehend Warriors

Brandon Briones (Fr. • Menasha) scored two goals and Paul Beach (So. • Prairie du Sac) and Brian Miller (So. • Chippewa Falls) one each as the UW-Oshkosh men's soccer team shutout Wisconsin Lutheran College, 4-0, on Sunday (Sept. 30) in Milwaukee.

UW-Oshkosh's shutout was its fifth in six matches and sixth of the year. The Titans have allowed just five goals in their 10 matches played this season.

Miller gave UW-Oshkosh (9-1) a 1-0 lead when he scored off assists from Shaun Gallagher (Sr. • Mukwonago) and Kiel Zillmer (Sr. • Mukwonago) at the 34:29 mark of the match. The goal was Miller's second of the season.

UW-Oshkosh pushed its advantage to 2-0 when Beach took a pass from Mike Franzen (Fr. • Sussex) and scored his second goal of the year at the 37:52 mark of the game.

UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Derek Christiansen (Sr. • Cedarburg) halted two shots to record his fourth shutout of the season. It was the 18th career shutout for Christiansen.

Matt Eisold allowed four goals and saved five shots while guarding the Wisconsin Lutheran College goal for the first 73:58 of the contest. Alex Vogel replaced Eisold and blocked one shot during his 16:02 of playing time.

Titans Swat Yellowjackets

Brandon Briones The UW-Oshkosh men's soccer team scored four unanswered goals to wipe away a 1-0 deficit and post a 4-1 victory over UW-Superior on Saturday (Sept. 29) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

UW-Superior (3-6) took the game's first lead with the help of an own goal at the 29:58 mark of the match. The goal came after a throw-in taken by UW-Superior's Andy Olness hit a UW-Oshkosh player and deflected into the net.

Brandon Briones (Fr. • Menasha) gave UW-Oshkosh a 2-1 advantage when he tallied goals at the 37:27 and 38:26 marks of the contest. Briones tied the score with an unassisted goal and then put the Titans ahead with a goal assisted by Will Howell (So. • Waunakee) and Jeff Pernitz (Jr. • Cross Plains). The goals were the fourth and fifth of the season for Briones.

UW-Oshkosh (8-1) held its one-goal lead until Shaun Gallagher (Sr. • Mukwonago) took a pass from Greg Jones (So. • Milwaukee) and scored his second goal of the year at the 72:57 mark of the match.

The Titans extended their lead to 4-1 on a goal by Jones at the 85:45 mark of the game. Assisting on Jones' third goal of the season were Gallagher and Pernitz.

Titans Gash Vikings

Shaun Gallagher (Sr. • Mukwonago) and Alex Minten (Sr. • Sturgeon Bay) each had a goal and an assist as the UW-Oshkosh men's soccer team shutout Lawrence University, 6-0, on Wednesday (Sept. 26) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

UW-Oshkosh (7-1) limited Lawrence University (3-5-1) to just one shot, a first-half attempt by Joe Sluhoski. The Titans launched 14 shots and posted a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.

UW-Oshkosh took a 2-0 lead to intermission as Brandon Briones (Fr. • Menasha) and Mike Franzen (Fr. • Sussex) scored on headers at the 26:28 and 42:27 marks of the contest, respectively. Briones counted his third goal of the season after receiving passes from Will Howell (So. • Waunakee) and Brian Miller (So. • Chippewa Falls). Franzen tallied his second goal of the year after acquiring serves from Gallagher and Minten.

In the second half, UW-Oshkosh changed the score four times. The Titans went ahead 3-0 when Minten took a pass from Neal Crowder (Fr. • Sturgeon Bay) and scored at the 55:38 mark of the match. Minten's goal was his third of the season.

UW-Oshkosh's fourth score came on an own goal at the 65:10 mark of the game. The goal took place after a Lawrence University player inadvertently knocked the ball into the net after a UW-Oshkosh corner kick.

UW-Oshkosh extended its lead to 5-0 when Gallagher took a pass from Adam Grant (Jr. • Green Bay) and scored his first goal of the season at the 72:39 mark of the match. The Titans' final score came on an unassisted goal by Devon Prideaux (Fr. • Eden Prairie, Minn.) at the 75:07 mark of the contest. It was the second goal of the year for Prideaux.

UW-Oshkosh had two goalkeepers see action as Derek Christiansen (Sr. • Cedarburg) played 74:15 and Tim Gindville (Fr. • New Lenox, Ill.) 15:45. Neither player was forced to make save.

Lawrence University also played two goalkeepers, including Paul Richter, who allowed three goals and halted three shots in 64:10 of action. Andrew Finley played the final 25:50 of the contest and allowed three goals while stopping one shot. The Vikings also had defender record a save.

UW-Oshkosh leads the all-time series with Lawrence University by a 21-3 count after defeating the Vikings for the 20th consecutive match. The Titans have outscored the Vikings, 14-0, in their last four meetings.

Titans Nip Pioneers

Brandon Briones (Fr. • Menasha) scored an unassisted goal late in the first half to give the UW-Oshkosh men’s soccer team a 1-0 victory over Carroll College on Sunday (Sept. 23) in Waukesha.

Briones recorded his match-winning goal at the 40:55 mark of the contest. It was the second goal of the season for Briones.

UW-Oshkosh (6-1) attempted 11 shots and three corner kicks. Briones led the Titans with two shots, while nine other players tallied one each.

Carroll College (4-5), which posted a 3-0 victory over 12th-ranked (D3kicks.com) North Park University (Ill.) on Friday (Sept. 21), recorded six shots and three corner kicks. Craig Carlson fired two shots to lead the Pioneers.

UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Derek Christiansen (Sr. • Cedarburg) needed just two saves to register his 17th career shutout and third of the season. Christiansen has allowed only four goals in his last 678 minutes played.

Carroll College goalkeeper Jamison Splett stopped five shots and yielded the game’s only score.

Sunday’s contest was the third between the two teams and the first since 1995. UW-Oshkosh posted 2-0 wins over Carroll College in 1993 and 1995.

Titans Put Sabres Away With Early Goals

The UW-Oshkosh men's soccer team scored twice in the first four minutes of play and coasted to a 4-0 victory over Marian College on Wednesday (Sept. 19) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

Alex Minten (Sr. • Sturgeon Bay) put UW-Oshkosh in front for good when he took a pass from Will Howell (So. • Waunakee) and scored just 1:58 into play. The Titans went ahead 2-0 on Paul Beach's (So. • Prairie du Sac) unassisted goal at the 3:31 mark of the match.

Greg Jones (So. • Milwaukee) extended the Titans' advantage to 3-0 when he headed a shot into the goal at the 38:21 mark of the game. Jack Borski (Fr. • Madison) and Brian Miller (So. • Chippewa Falls) were credited with assists on his goal.

Devon Prideaux (Fr. • Eden Prairie, Minn.) gave UW-Oshkosh a 4-0 lead when he took a serve from Minten and headed a shot into the net with 6:46 remaining in the contest. It was the first collegiate goal for Prideaux.

Titans Take Crusaders Into Custody

Brandon Briones The UW-Oshkosh men's soccer team built a two-goal halftime lead and went on to post a 3-0 victory over Clarke College (Iowa) on Sunday (Sept. 16) in Dubuque, Iowa.

Brandon Briones (Fr. • Menasha) put UW-Oshkosh in the lead for good when he took a pass from Paul Beach (So. • Prairie du Sac) and scored his first collegiate goal at the 24:20 mark of the contest.

UW-Oshkosh (4-1) went ahead 2-0 when Alex Minten (Sr. • Sturgeon Bay) scored an unassisted goal at the 38:09 mark of the match. The goal was Minten's first of the season.

The Titans held their 2-0 lead until Will Howell (So. • Waunakee) scored an unassisted goal at the 56:02 mark of the game. Howell's goal was his second of the year.

UW-Oshkosh out-shot Clarke College, 11-9, and compiled a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks. Beach and Alex Lanser (So. • Port Washington) both fired two shots to lead the Titans, while Dan Marxkors launched three shots to pace the Crusaders.

Titans Suffer Rare Loss To Pioneers

Clayton Ransom Eric Christensen blasted a loose ball into the net midway through the second half to give the UW-Platteville men's soccer team a 2-1 victory over UW-Oshkosh on Saturday (Sept. 15) in Platteville.

Christensen recorded his game-winning, unassisted goal at the 65:15 mark of the contest. The score helped UW-Platteville (4-2) defeat UW-Oshkosh (3-1) for the first time since 1987 and snap an 18-match losing streak to the Titans.

UW-Platteville got on the scoreboard first as Brian Gottschlich took a long pass from Tyler Holle and sent a shot into the goal at the 16:24 mark of the match.

The score remained in favor of UW-Platteville until UW-Oshkosh's Clayton Ransom (Jr. • St. Charles, Ill.) obtained a pass from Jack Borski (Fr. • Madison) and scored at the 65:15 mark of the game. The goal was Ransom's team-leading fourth of the season.

UW-Oshkosh attempted seven shots in the first half and five in the second. Ransom paced the Titans with three shots, while Brian Miller (So. • Chippewa Falls) added two.

Mike Franzen (Fr. • Sussex) and Adam Grant (Jr. • Green Bay) scored goals in the first 12 minutes of play as the UW-Oshkosh men's soccer team defeated St. Olaf College (Minn.), 3-1, on Saturday (Sept. 8) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

UW-Oshkosh, which was competing in the 425th match of its 24-year-old men's soccer program, took a quick 1-0 lead when Franzen received a pass from Paul Beach (So. • Prairie du Sac) and scored just 4:30 into the contest. It was the first collegiate goal for Franzen.

UW-Oshkosh (2-0) extended its lead to 2-0 when Grant scored on a direct kick 12 minutes into the match. The Titans tripled their advantage when Clayton Ransom (Jr. • St. Charles, Ill.) took a pass from David Frey (So. • Stoughton) and scored at the 42:13 mark of the game. The goal was Ransom's team-leading third of the season.

St. Olaf College (1-2) cut its deficit to 3-1 when Barrett Kennedy scored on a penalty kick at the 46:57 mark of the match.

Both goalkeepers played the entire contest, with UW-Oshkosh's Derek Christiansen (Sr. • Cedarburg) recording one save and St. Olaf College's Kevin Friede seven.

Titans' Season Opener A Success

Ransom, who counted only two goals in each of his previous two UW-Oshkosh seasons, gave the Titans a 2-0 lead with shots into the net at the 39:58 and 44:49 marks of the match. Ransom received assists from Brandon Briones (Fr. • Menasha) and Alex Lanser (So. • Port Washington) on his first goal and and Devon Prideaux (Fr. • Eden Prairie, Minn.) on his second.

The difference between the two teams stayed at two goals until UW-Oshkosh's Greg Jones (So. • Milwaukee) took a pass from Adam Grant (Jr. • Green Bay) and scored at the 72:37 mark of the contest. It was the first collegiate goal for Jones.

St. Norbert College (0-1) avoided the shutout when Michael Burmesch collected a pass from Greg Schmidt and scored at the 77:19 mark of the game.

UW-Oshkosh, which improved its all-time record against St. Norbert College to 19-5-1, fired 10 shots and two corner kicks. The Green Knights, who suffered just their 15th loss in 97 matches (77-15-5 record), discharged 10 shots and one corner kick.

Titans Play Badgers To Exhibition Tie

Will Howell The UW-Oshkosh men's soccer team opened its exhibition season by settling for a 2-2 tie with NCAA Division I University of Wisconsin on Friday (Aug. 24) at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison.

The match was split into three periods and totaled 100 minutes. The contest was moved to Camp Randall Stadium due to concern regarding the resurfaced playing field at the McClimon Soccer Complex.

UW-Oshkosh took a 1-0 lead as Will Howell (So. • Waunakee) scored on a penalty kick just five minutes into play. Despite being out-shot, 13-2, the Titans went to the first break with a one-goal advantage.

Both teams fired three shots in the second period, but UW-Oshkosh extended its lead to 2-0 on Brandon Briones' (Fr. • Menasha) unassisted goal at the 55:10 mark of the contest.

The University of Wisconsin rallied in the third period as it scored on two of its four shots, including the match-tying goal by Bryan Gerster with 1:07 to play.
