Jack Borski (Madison) and Holly Ozanich (Green Bay) were recognized for their success both on and off the field when they received the 2011 John Taylor Scholar-Athlete Award at the UW-Oshkosh Hall of Fame & Senior Awards Banquet on Sunday (May 1).

The John Taylor Scholar-Athlete Award is presented annually to outstanding male and female senior letter winners who own a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or higher. The four-year letter winner received NCAA Division III All-America third team honors last fall after helping UW-Oshkosh to a 20-1-3 record and a third-place national finish. The 2010 WIAC Men's Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year was a second team selection on the 2010 ESPN Academic All-America College Division Men's Soccer Team.

Borski, a defender, compiled one assist this season during a 1-0 victory over The College of St. Scholastica (Minn.). In 2009, he totaled one goal (game-winner) and three assists for five points. His freshman and sophomore campaigns included a total of seven assists. A starter in 72 of his 73 career games, Borski finished with one goal and 11 assists for 13 points.

UW-Oshkosh Hall Of Fame Increases Membership By Five

Hall of Fame Class of 2007

2011 UW-Oshkosh Hall of Fame Inductees
(L-R):
R. Toby Bares, Christina Southward, Pat McDonald, Holly Spoo, Dave Luedtke

The UW-Oshkosh Hall of Fame increased its roster to 163 members with Sunday's (May 1) inductions of Dave Luedtke (’86), Pat McDonald (’90), Christina Southward (‘03), Holly Spoo (’99) and Richard Toby Bares. The induction ceremony was held in UW-Oshkosh's Reeve Memorial Union.

The UW-Oshkosh Hall of Fame was established in 1974 to give tribute and deserved recognition to former athletes, coaches and friends of the university.  It is also intended to enhance school tradition by honoring those people who have shown exceptional ability while on the UW-Oshkosh campus and since graduation.

Not many people can say that they built an athletic program, but Richard Toby Bares can say he built the UW-Oshkosh men’s soccer program from scratch and turned it into a national powerhouse.

In 1984, Bares became the first head coach of the Titans. He then stayed for 26 years – the last 25 all featuring a winning record. His .755 winning percentage ranks ninth all-time in the NCAA Division III, while his 344 wins are the most in WIAC history. Over a span of 17 years, UW-Oshkosh made 11 postseason visits and reached the NCAA Division III Final Four three times.

Bares was named National Coach of the Year in 1994 as the Titans tallied an undefeated record of 18-0-3. UW-Oshkosh captured its first 14 matches of the year and finished with a scoring margin of 68 goals to 14. That run came to an end with a double-overtime tie to Bethany College (W.V.) in the NCAA Division III semifinal.

UW-Oshkosh made two other Final Four appearances under Bares, as he earned National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Regional Coach of the Year in 2000 and 2003. The 2000 squad put together wins in 17 consecutive matches on its way to a 20-2 overall mark. During 2003, the Titans’ lone defeat came in their 22nd and final contest of the season. UW-Oshkosh recorded three postseason shutouts on its home field to reach the national semifinal.

There were four other seasons in which the Titans lost two matches or less. Bares led UW-Oshkosh to a 15-1-2 mark in 1988, 11-2-4 in 1990, 14-2-3 in 1991 and 17-2-1 in 1999. The 1999 version reached the third round of the NCAA Tournament – one of six teams to achieve a Sweet Sixteen berth under Bares.

With all the team success came individual accolades. Bares coached five NSCAA All-Americans, including 2000 National Player of the Year Scott Deopere. The Titans also had 33 players obtain a total of 50 NCAA Division III All-Region awards. Roberto Gutierrez (1993-95), Brad Haga (2001-03) and Will Howell (2007-09) each earned the distinction three times. Bares’ squads were consistently recognized with the NSCAA’s Team Academic Award, while seven Titans were named Academic All-Americans.

Bares served as president of the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association from 1991-92. The Merrill High School graduate has received 10 coaching awards from the WSCA, and he was inducted into its Hall of Fame this year. Bares is currently the assistant director of operations at UW-Oshkosh’s Student Recreation and Wellness Center.

After receiving his bachelor’s degree from UW-Stevens Point in 1976, Bares earned his master’s at Bowling Green State University (Ohio) in 1977. He and his wife, JoAnn, are the parents of daughters, Ellie and Katie, and son, Ricky.

Bares Inducted Into Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association Hall Of Fame

NCAAFormer UW-Oshkosh head men’s soccer coach Toby Bares was one of five men inducted into the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association (WSCA) Hall of Fame on March 19 in Green Bay.

The association’s third induction class also included Aldo Santaga (UW-Green Bay), Rick Kilps (UW-Parkside), Harry Kelderman (Neenah High School) and Alex Toth, Sr. (Croatian Eagles Club). The WSCA Hall of Fame now has 13 members.

Bares led the UW-Oshkosh soccer program for the first 26 years of its existence. During that time, he posted a 344-99-38 record that equals a .755 winning percentage. When Bares retired in 2009, he ranked ninth in NCAA Division III history in winning percentage and first in WIAC annals in victories. His UW-Oshkosh squads had a winning record during each of his last 25 years and qualified for NCAA Division III postseason play 11 times.

The Titans advanced to NCAA Division III Final Fours in 1994, 2000 and 2003. Bares earned Regional Coach of the Year each time, while taking the National Coach of the Year award in 1994. That squad finished with an undefeated 18-0-3 record. UW-Oshkosh then went 20-2 during 2000 and 21-1 in 2003.

Following Bares’ guidance, the Titans lost two matches or less in seven seasons. The 1999 edition racked up a 17-2-1 mark and was one of six UW-Oshkosh squads to reach the Sweet Sixteen. Bares also compiled records of 15-1-2 in 1988, 11-2-4 in 1990 and 14-2-3 in 1991.

UW-Oshkosh gained numerous individual accolades under Bares, as five players garnered NCAA Division III All-America status. He coached 2000 National Player of the Year Scott Deopere, along with 32 other players who received 48 NCAA Division III All-Region selections. Seven of Bares’ athletes were named an Academic All-American.

Bares is a graduate of UW-Stevens Point and earned his master’s degree from Bowling Green State University (Ohio) in 1977. He is currently the assistant director of operations at UW-Oshkosh’s Student Recreation and Wellness Center.

NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship Bracke

Free Kick, Stingy Defense Lead Titans To NCAA Final Four Berth

James PikeA perfectly executed free kick by Tim Stadler (Jr. • Wauwatosa) and another stellar defensive effort put the UW-Oshkosh men's soccer team in the Final Four of the NCAA Division III Championship.

UW-Oshkosh (20-0-3) advanced to the semifinal round of the 60-team tournament after defeating last year's national runner-up Calvin College (Mich.), 1-0, on Saturday (Nov. 20) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

UW-Oshkosh, which made Final Four appearances in 1994, 2000 and 2003, will play two-time defending national champion Messiah College (Pa.) in the semifinals on Dec. 3 at the Blossom Sports Complex in San Antonio, Texas. The Falcons (21-1), who are appearing in the semifinals for the seventh consecutive year, defeated the United States Merchant Marine Academy (N.Y.), 3-0, in a quarterfinal round contest held Sunday (Nov. 21).

Stadler broke a scoreless tussle between UW-Oshkosh and Calvin College (16-3-5) with his free kick in the 61st minute (60:53) of action.

Following a foul to UW-Oshkosh's Robby Giljohann (Jr. • Pewaukee) near the top of the penalty box area, Stadler drilled a low 23-yard kick past a wall of Calvin College defenders and into the corner of the net. It was Stadler's team-leading 12th goal of the season, including his seventh match winner.

Calvin College threatened twice to tie the score in the final 20 minutes of play, but shots by Miles Colago and Scott Hooker sailed over the UW-Oshkosh goal.

UW-Oshkosh attempted 13 shots, including seven in the first half. The Titans had five of their shots saved by Calvin College goalkeeper Ryan Bratt and two more by a Knight defender. UW-Oshkosh was led by the four shots of Mike Franzen (Sr. • Sussex) and the two of both Giljohann and Stadler.

UW-Oshkosh limited Calvin College to just six shots as it recorded its school-record 19th shutout of the season. The Knights, who were handcuffed by the defensive pressure applied by the UW-Oshkosh back line of Jack Borski (Sr. • Madison), Will Chaney (Jr. • Cedarburg) and Andy Kohel (Sr. • Racine), had two of their shots saved by Titan goalkeeper James Pike (Jr. • Wauwatosa).

UW-Oshkosh entered the contest ranked fifth in the NCAA Division III by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, Calvin College 17th.

UW-Oshkosh wasted little time in jumping ahead of Loras College (16-7-1) as it scored in the ninth minute (8:40) of play. Prideaux gave the Titans the lead when he kicked a 10-yard shot off passes from Robby Giljohann (Jr. • Pewaukee) and Brian Miller (Sr. • Chippewa Falls) into the goal. It was the sixth goal of the season for Prideaux, including his second match winner.

UW-Oshkosh doubled its advantage over the Duhawks with a goal off a corner kick in the contest's 24th minute (23:27). Andy Kohel (Sr. • Racine) served the corner kick and Stadler completed the opportunity by heading a five-yard shot into the back of the net. The goal was Stadler's team-leading 11th of the season.
