Hansman, Moran Receive NCAA All-America Honors

Chris HansmanMike MoranSophomore Chris Hansman and senior Mike Moran earned All-America accolades as the UW-Oshkosh men's swimming and diving team finished 25th at the NCAA Division III Championship held Thursday through Saturday (March 21-23) in Oxford, Ohio.

Hansman achieved All-America mention for the first time in his career after finishing fifth in the three meter diving with a score of 424.95. Anthony Holt of Kalamazoo College (Mich.) won the event with a score of 454.30, narrowly edging the second-place mark of 452.70 by Derek Chicarilli of Middlebury College (Vt.).

Hansman also competed in the one meter diving at this year's championship, but his preliminary score of 391.80 was unable to advance him to the finals.

Like Hansman, Moran also received All-America recognition for the first time in is career, placing seventh in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 57.67. Joshua Boss of Hope College (Mich.) won the event with a time of 54.77.

Moran also swam the 50 yard freestyle and the 200 yard breaststroke at this year's NCAA meet, but was unable to qualify for the finals after posting preliminary times of 22.37 and 2:07.60, respectively.

Kenyon College (Ohio) scored 589 points to win its 23rd consecutive NCAA Division III team title. The Lords were followed by second-place Johns Hopkins University (Md.) with 382 points, third-place Emory University (Ga.) with 358, fourth-place Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.) with 269 and fifth-place Hope College with 262. UW-Oshkosh scored 26 points to share 25th place with Wittenberg University (Ohio).

Titans Finish Fifth At WIAC Championship

David BahrChris HansmanMike MoranThe UW-Stevens Point men's swimming and diving team captured its third consecutive WIAC title following completion of competition at the three-day event held February 21-23in Whitewater.

The Pointers totaled 1190 points to win their fifth title in the last six seasons. UW-La Crosse was second with 959 points, while UW-Eau Claire finished third with 821 points. The Blugolds were followed by fourth-place UW-Whitewater with 687 points, fifth-place UW-Oshkosh with 463 points and sixth-place UW-River Falls with 282 points.

Erik Johnson claimed three individual titles to lead the Pointers. He won the 50 yard freestyle, 100 yard freestyle and 200 yard freestyle with time of 21.54,46.43 and 1:43.15, respectively. Anthony Harris also claimed an individual crown for the Pointers, winning the 100 yard butterfly in a pool record time of 50.68.

UW-Stevens Point also won three relays at the league championship. The Pointers won the 200 yard freestyle in 1:25.72. Aaron Marshall, Anthony Harris, Scott Bowe and Erik Johnson teamed to win the 400 yard freestyle relay in a pool record time of 3:08.39, while Thad Gunther, Marshall, Harris and Johnson won the 800 yard freestyle relay in 7:02.95.

UW-La Crosse's Paul Noffke won the 200 yard backstroke in 1:56.85, while Ethan Kaercher won the 400 yard individual medley in 4:16.36.

UW-Eau Claire claimed a pair of relay titles and Matt Oglesby won two individual crowns. Oglesby became a two-time conference championship in the 100 yard backstroke in a league record time of 50.99, and the 200 yard individual medley in 1:55.94.

The Blugolds' 200 yard medley relay team of Chris Smith, Kyle Gulbrandson, Matt Schuebel and Harris won in 1:34.15, while Brent Witt, Oglesby, Smith and Gulbrandson teamed to win the 400 yard medley relay in 3:30.09.

UW-Whitewater's John Borta won the 500 yard freestyle in 4:38.94, marking the third time in his career he has won the conference title in the event. He also won the 1,650 yard freestyle in 16:32.92, the second time he has won the league event. The Warhawks' Andrew Gilbertson won the 200 yard butterfly in 1:55.62.

UW-Oshkosh's Mike Moran won the 200 yard breaststroke for the second consecutive season with a time of 2:06.77, and also won the 100 yard breaststroke in 57.40. Chris Hansman claimed both diving titles, winning the one meter event with a score of 448.60 and the three meter event with 503.90 points.

UW-Oshkosh also received a second-place finish from David Bahr in the one meter diving, totaling a score of 420.45.

UW-Eau Claire head coach Rob Welcher garnered the league's 2002 Coach of the Year honor.

Blugolds Outsplash Titans

Brett DillMike MoranSenior Mike Moran won three events, sophomore Chris Hansman two and junior Brett Dill one as the UW-Oshkosh men's swimming and diving team dropped a 158-108 decision to UW-Eau Claire on Saturday (February 9) in Albee Hall. The setback completed UW-Oshkosh's 2001-02 dual meet schedule with a record of 6-4.

Moran and UW-Eau Claire senior Matt Oglesby were the only triple-winners in the meet, with Moran swimming to first-place finishes in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 58.19, the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:10.09 and the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:06.91. Moran's time in the 100 yard breaststroke established a school record and surpassed the provisional standard for next month's NCAA Division III Men's Swimming and Diving Championship in Oxford, Ohio. Oglesby took first-place finishes in the 400 yard individual medley (4:21.85), 100 yard butterfly (52.79) and 200 yard backstroke (1:59.96).

Hansman dominated the diving competition, with first-place scores of 271.75 in the one meter and 292.45 in the three meter. Hansman's mark in the one meter diving also surpassed the provisional standard for the NCAA Division III Men's Swimming and Diving Championship. Dill recorded his lone victory in the 50 yard freestyle, swimming to a first-place time of 23.25.

UW-Oshkosh also received second-place finishes from senior David Bahr in the one meter diving (271.25) and three meter diving (268.10), freshman Joe Boersma in the 200 yard butterfly (2:24.31), Dill in the 100 yard butterfly (57.10) and 100 yard freestyle (51.14), freshman Aaron Evans in the 100 yard backstroke (59.18) and freshman Jon Patzwald in the 200 yard freestyle (1:55.58).

Eagles Edge Titans

Chris HansmanMike MoranA victory in the meet's final event, the 400 yard freestyle relay, decided the outcome as the UW-La Crosse men's swimming and diving team nipped UW-Oshkosh, 109-101, on Saturday (January 19) in La Crosse.

UW-Oshkosh won six of the 13 events as sophomore Chris Hansman and senior Mike Moran were both double winners. Hansman won the one meter diving with a score of 255.75 and the three meter diving with a score of 258.35. Moran was victorious in the 100 yard breaststroke and 100 yard butterfly with times of 59.70 and 53.80, respectively.

Other first-place finishers for UW-Oshkosh were sophomore Eric Enerson in the 100 yard backstroke wirth a time of 1:00.93 and freshman Jon Patzwald in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:26.49.

Second-place finishes in the meet went to UW-Oshkosh senior David Bahr in the one meter diving (221.85), freshman Joe Boersma in the 100 yard backstroke (1:02.440, sophomore Eric Enerson in the 500 yard freestyle (5:54.07) and senior Chris Kessler in the three meter diving (239.10).

Titans Slip Past Redmen, Vikings

Chris HansmanMike MoranSenior Mike Moran won three events and sophomore Chris Hansman a pair as the UW-Oshkosh men's swimming and diving team edged Carthage College, 58-53, and Lawrence University, 57-56, on Friday (January 18) in Albee Hall.

Moran paced the Titans by winning the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 59.54, 100 yard butterfly with a time of 54.27 and the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 2:04.14. Hansman contributed heavily to the Titans' wins by placing first in the one and three-meter diving events with scores of 280.00 and 287.85, respectively.

UW-Oshkosh's remaining event victory went to freshman Aaron Evans, who won the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 22.94.

Placing second for the Titans were senior David Bahr in the one meter diving (257.60) and three meter diving (263.10) and junior Brett Dill in the 50 yard freestyle (23.16) and 100 yard freestyle (51.09).

Titans Drown Pioneers, Red Hawks

David BahrChris HansmanThe UW-Oshkosh men's swimming and diving team defeated Carroll College, 155-47 and Ripon College, 153-52, in dual meets held Saturday (December 8) in Albee Hall.

Sophomore Justin Lease and senior Mike Moran each won two events for the Titans.

Lease won the 200 yard individual medley in a time of 2:16.97 and the 100 yard freestyle in a time of 52.49, while Moran won the 100 yard butterfly in a time of 52.81 and the 100 yard breaststroke in a time of 1:00.15.

Sophomore Chris Hansman won the three meter diving with a score of 278.00 and senior David Bahr the one meter diving with a score of 270.45 for UW-Oshkosh's remaining victories.
