Hansman Dives, Iimori Swims
To NCAA All-America Honors


Chris HansmanYusuke IimoriUW-Oshkosh's Yusuke Iimori (So. • Saga, Japan) received All-America recognition in two events and Chris Hansman (Sr. • Neenah) one at the 30th Annual NCAA Division III Men's Swimming and Diving Championship held Thursday through Saturday (March 18-20) in St. Peters, Mo.

Iimori swam to his All-America awards by placing fourth in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 56.51 and sixth in the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:03.30. Iimori's performance in the 200 yard breaststroke improved his own school record, a mark of 2:03.91 that he registered in the preliminaries of this year's national meet. Iimori previously gained All-America recognition by placing eighth in the 100 yard breaststroke at last year's NCAA Division III Championship.

Mike Pohorylo of Amherst College (Mass.) captured both breaststroke events, winning at 100 yards with a time of 56.20 and 200 yards with an effort of 2:00.97. Pohorylo was followed in the 100 yard breaststroke listings by second-place Andrew Kurtz of Kalamazoo College (Mich.) at 56.26 and Joseph Gosselar of Kenyon College (Ohio) at 56.27. In the 200 yard breaststroke rankings, Pohorylo was followed by second-place Gosselar at 2:01.93 and third-place Scott Pitz of Johns Hopkins University (Md.) at 2:02.32.

Hansman compiled the fourth All-America award of his career by placing fourth in the three meter diving with a score of 408.40. Hansman also qualified for this year's national meet in the one meter diving, but his preliminary score of 349.80 was unable to advance him to the finals. Previously, Hansman received All-America recognition by finishing fifth in the three meter diving at the 2002 NCAA Division III Championship and seventh in the three meter diving and eighth in the one meter diving at the 2003 NCAA Division III Championship.

Joel Meyer of the United States Merchant Marine Academy (N.Y.) claimed the one meter diving title at this year's NCAA Division III Championship with a score of 479.30. He was followed by second-place Mike Shaw of Springfield College (Mass.) at 459.50 and third-place Mike Salmon of Hamilton College (N.Y.) at 448.75. Shaw took the three meter diving title with a score of 488.15, while Meyer finished second at 480.10 and Salmon third at 430.05.

Iimori and Hansman were UW-Oshkosh's only representatives at the 2004 NCAA Division III Championship.

Kenyon College scored 678.5 points to claim its 25th consecutive NCAA Division III title. The Lords were followed in the team standings by second-place Emory University (Ga.) with 446 points, third-place Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.) with 307, fourth-place Denison University (Ohio) with 246 and fifth-place Johns Hopkins University with 229.5.

UW-Oshkosh counted 47 points to rank 18th among the 53 teams that scored. The top-20 mention was just the third for UW-Oshkosh in the history of NCAA Division III Championship, following an 18th-place finish for the Titans in 1985 and a 17th-place standing in 1996.

Recognized at this year's NCAA Division III Championship with special awards were Marc Courtney-Brooks of Kenyon College, Meyer, Dave Beloich of Carnegie Mellon University and Kevin Ryan of the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Courtney-Brooks was named the NCAA Division III Swimmer of the Year, Meyer the NCAA Division III Diver of the Year, Beloich the NCAA Division III Swimming Coach of the Year and Ryan the NCAA Division III Diving Coach of the Year.

Hansman, Iimori Capture Titles At WIAC Championship

UW-Stevens Point captured its fifth straight title and seventh in the last eight years at the 42nd Annual WIAC Men's Swimming and Diving Championship held Thursday through Saturday (Feb. 19-21) in UW-Oshkosh's Albee Hall.

UW-Stevens Point won the meet with 930 points, while UW-La Crosse finished second with 898.5, UW-Eau Claire third with 363, UW-Whitewater fourth with 345.5, UW-Oshkosh fifth with 311 and UW-River Falls sixth with 303.

UW-Stevens Point claimed five individual titles and one relay crown on their way to the title. Matt Sievers won the 50-yard freestyle for the second straight season with a time of 21.41, while Garth Newport captured the 100-yard butterfly with a winning time of 50.75.

The Pointers' Matt Grunwald won the 200-yard butterfly for the second consecutive year with a time of 1:55.90 and Alex Anderson defended his crown in the 200-yard individual medley with a first-place time of 1:56.03. Peter Nowak claimed the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:21.02.

UW-Stevens Point's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Aaron Marshall, Tyler Eloranta, Anderson and Sievers won the event with a time of 1:24.43.

UW-Oshkosh's Yusuke Iimori (So. • Saga, Japan) won the 100-yard breaststroke for the second straight season with a time of 57.05. He established a conference record in the preliminaries of the event with a time of 56.69. Iimori also won the 200-yard breaststroke with a conference-record time of 2:05.44.

UW-Oshkosh's Chris Hansman (Sr. • Neenah) earned Diver of the Meet honors for the second straight year after successfully defending his titles in the one-meter and three-meter diving events with marks of 485.70 and 508.45, respectively. He won the three-meter event for the fourth consecutive season and the one-meter event for the third straight year. Hansman and UW-Eau Claire's Jim Brennan (1978-81) are the only individuals in conference history to win the three-meter diving crown four straight seasons.

UW-La Crosse's Shane Ryan won three events en route to being voted the Swimmer of the Meet for the second straight season. Ryan successfully defended his titles in the 200-yard freestyle, 500-yard freestyle and 1650-yard freestyle with times of 1:42.30, 4:45.07 and 16:41.60, respectively.

The Eagles' Trevor Rowlands claimed the 100-yard freestyle for the second straight year with a time of 47.23, while Paul Noffke won the 200-yard backstroke for the second time in his career with a time of 1:55.01. He also won the title during the 2002 championship.

UW-La Crosse also claimed four relay titles during the three-day league competition, successfully defending their crowns in the 400-yard freestyle relay and 800-yard freestyle relay. Travis Martin, Josh Mork, Rowlands, and Ryan won the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:07.54, while Ethan Kaercher, Rowlands, Mork and Ryan set a conference record in the 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 6:56.54.

David Dettmann, Matthew Spurr, Ryan and Rowlands teamed to win the 200-yard medley relay for the Eagles with a time of 1:33.64, while Noffke, Dettmann, Spurr and Rowlands claimed the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:26.17.

UW-Whitewater's Craig Lashley captured the 100-yard backstroke crown with a time of 53.23.

UW-Oshkosh also received a fourth-place score of 389.75 in the three-meter diving and a fifth-place mark of 401.70 in the one-meter diving from Glenn Lilley (So. • Waukesha). The Titans' Sven Jaeger (Sittard, The Netherlands) added fifth-place times of 2:00.93 in the 200-yard individual medley and 2:12.50 in the 200-yard breaststroke.

UW-Stevens Point head coach Al Boelk was voted the Coach of the Year by the league coaches for the second straight season and fifth time in his career. He also won the award in 2001, 2000 and 1998.
