Titans Take Fifth At WIAC Championship

Sven Jaeger (So. • Sittard, The Netherlands) finished third in two events and fifth in another as the UW-Oshkosh men’s swimming and diving team placed fifth at the WIAC Championship held Thursday through Saturday (Feb. 17-19) in Whitewater.

UW-Stevens Point scored a meet-record 1,328 points to capture its sixth straight WIAC title and ninth overall. UW- La Crosse finished second in the six-team meet with 1,013 points, while UW-Eau Claire listed third with 733 points, UW-Whitewater fourth with 602, UW-Oshkosh fifth with 463 and UW-River Falls sixth with 370. UW-Oshkosh finished fifth at last year’s meet with 311 points.

UW-Stevens Point captured the team title after winning all five relay events and eight individual titles. The Pointers’ Tyler Eloranta was voted Swimmer of the Meet after winning the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle and 200-yard freestyle. He also swam on four of UW-Stevens Point’s five first-place relay teams.

Jaeger paced UW-Oshkosh by finishing third in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:59.80 and the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:59.38. Jaeger’s fifth-place finish came in the 400-yard individual medley, where he recorded an effort of 4:22.21.

Jaeger also joined Aaron Burg (Jr. • New London), Nicholas Cole (Fr. • West Bend) and Tyler Johnson (Fr. • Colleyville, Texas) on UW-Oshkosh relay teams that finished fourth in one event and fifth in three others. The UW-Oshkosh quartet placed fourth in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:17.76 and fifth in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:30.52, the 200-yard medley relay with a mark of 1:42.06 and the 800 yard freestyle with a performance of 7:25.09.

Cole concluded UW-Oshkosh’s top efforts by posting a fourth-place time of 17:10.27 in the 1,650-yard freestyle.

Scott Heatwole of UW-Eau Claire was named Diver of the Meet, while Al Boelk of UW-Stevens Point was voted as the league’s Coach of the Year. Craig Lashley of UW-Whitewater was selected as the winner of the WIAC’s Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete Award.

Titans Top Redmen, Fall To Vikings

The Titans defeated Carthage College, 56-49, and lost to Lawrence University, 64-45.

T.J. Tershe (Fr. • Wind Lake) won a pair of events, placing first in both the one-meter diving with 184.05 points and the three-meter diving with 156.05 points. Other event-winners were Aaron Burg (Jr. • New London) in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 49.96 and Josh Hyde (So. • Fond du Lac) in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:00.99.

Jacob Schultz (Fr. • Franklin) had second-place finishes in both the one-meter diving with 95.80 points and the three-meter diving with 124.95 points, while Nicholas Cole (Fr. • West Bend) finished second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:45.80.

Also placing second was the Titans' 400-yard relay team of Burg, Cole, Tyler Johnson (Fr. • Colleyville, Tex.) and John Patzwald (Sr. • Menomonee Falls). The quartet posted a time of 3:25.46.

Finishing third for UW-Oshkosh were Johnson in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.02 and the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:57.35, Cole in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:50.93, Burg in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:07.26 and Hyde in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:21.70.

Yusuke Iimori (Jr. • Saga, Japan) won two individual events and swam on three winning relay squads as the UW-Oshkosh men's swimming and diving team finished third in its own invitational held Friday and Saturday (Dec. 3-4) at the Boldt Natatorium in Appleton.

UW-Whitewater captured the team title with 468.5 points. The Warhawks were followed by second-place UW-Eau Claire with 462 points, third-place UW-Oshkosh with 422.5, fourth-place Lawrence University with 390, fifth-place Marquette University (Club) with 112 and sixth-place Ripon College with 19.

Iimori earned a first-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 59.47 and the 200-yard breaststroke with a performance of 2:11.35. He also swam on the Titans' first-place 400-yard freestyle, 200-yard medley and 400-yard medley relay teams. UW-Oshkosh posted winning times of 3:19.62 in the 400-yard freestyle relay, 1:40.81 in the 200-yard medley relay and 3:39.30 in the 400-yard medley relay.

Burg won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 49.96. He also joined Iimori as a member of the Titan's first-place 400-yard freestyle, 200-yard medley and 400-yard medley relay teams. Burg's other first-place performance came in the 200-yard freestyle relay, where he helped UW-Oshkosh register a winning time of 1:30.85.

UW-Oshkosh claimed two other individual event titles when Nicholas Cole (Fr. • West Bend) won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:52.20 and Sven Jaeger (So. • Sittard, The Netherlands) the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:00.85. Jaeger also swam on all four of the Titans' winning relay teams, while Cole swam on the first-place 200-yard freestyle and the 200-yard medley relay teams.

UW-Oshkosh's lone remaining member of its winning 200-yard freestyle, 400-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley relay teams was Tyler Johnson (Fr. • Colleyville, Texas).

Compiling second-place finishes for the Titans were Cole in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:08.59, Iimori in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:06.36, Jaeger in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 2:15.58 and Johnson in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.64. Cole added a pair of third-place finishes by swimming to times of 23.05 in the 50-yard freestyle and 54.35 in the 100-yard butterfly.
