Burg Earns Academic All-America Honor
The College
Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) has selected UW-Oshkosh’s
Aaron Burg (Sr. • New London) to its 2006 ESPN The Magazine
Academic All-America College Division Men’s At-Large Team.
The 48-member listing features NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III
and NAIA student athletes in the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics,
ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis,
volleyball, water polo and wrestling.
Burg, a four-year member of the UW-Oshkosh men’s swimming
and diving team, earned a spot on the third squad. Other WIAC student-athletes
recognized were wrestler Mike Hayes and swimmer Garth Newport of
UW-Stevens Point, both as second-team selections.
Burg finished seventh in the 50-yard freestyle and eighth in both
the 100-yard breaststroke and 100-yard freestyle at the 2006 WIAC
Championship held Feb. 9-11 in Minneapolis, Minn. He currently shares
ownership of UW-Oshkosh records in the 200-yard medley relay, 400-yard
medley relay and 800-yard freestyle relay.
Burg, who boasts a perfect 4.00 cumulative grade point average as
a secondary education major, is an eight-time member of both UW-Oshkosh’s
Dean’s List and the WIAC Honor Roll. He was named UW-Oshkosh’s
Biology Major of the Year in 2006 and the school’s Chemistry
Student of the Year in 2005. Burg also has served as a Big Brother/Big
Sister volunteer and a lab assistant in UW-Oshkosh’s Biology
Department.
Since the inception of the CoSIDA Academic All-American Program
in 1952, 32 UW-Oshkosh student-athletes have combined for 43 awards.
UW-Oshkosh’s award winners are led by four-time honoree Laura
Nelson (women’s cross country/women’s track and field).
To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key
reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a
scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings
at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports
information director.
Earlier this summer, Burg was a first-team selection on the ESPN
The Magazine Academic All-District Five College Division Men’s
At-Large Team. Other WIAC mentions on the 10-member first team were
Hayes, Newport and Mike Salmela of UW-River Falls.

Titans Finish Fifth At WIAC Championship

UW-Oshkosh’s Jacob Chadderdon (Fr. •
Madison) finished first in the one-meter diving and second in
the three-meter diving events at the WIAC Men’s Swimming
and Diving Championship held Feb. 9-11 in Minneapolis, Minn.
UW-Stevens Point scored 1,017.5 points to capture its seventh
straight WIAC title and 10th in school history. UW-La Crosse
finished second in the six-team meet with 781.5 points, while
UW-Eau Claire placed third with 526, UW-Whitewater fourth with
368, UW-Oshkosh fifth with 284 and UW-River Falls sixth with
185. The Titans finished fifth a year ago with 463 points.
Chadderdon won the one-meter diving competition with 444.60
points, while UW-Eau Claire’s Scott Heatwole finished
second with 440.10. In the three-meter diving, Heatwole took
first place with 466.55 points and Chadderdon second with 401.80.
Chadderdon and Heatwole shared the championship’s Diver
of the Meet Award.
Aaron Burg (Sr. • New London) had a strong meet for the
Titans as he finished seventh in the 50-yard freestyle with
a time of 22.42 and eighth in the 100-yard breaststroke and
100-yard freestyle with times of 1:01.86 and 49.36, respectively.
UW-Stevens Point’s Chase Gross won the 50-yard freestyle
with a time of 21.28 and the 100-yard freestyle with a performance
of 45.98. UW-Stevens Point’s Alex Anderson won the 100-yard
breaststroke with a time of 56.10.
Nicholas Cole (So. • West Bend) added a fourth-place finish
for UW-Oshkosh by swimming to a time of 17:20.57 in the 1,650-yard
freestyle. UW-La Crosse’s Karl Richters won the event
with a time of 16:48.27.
UW-Oshkosh finished in the top four in two relays. The Titans
placed third in the 200-yard medley relay as Burg, Cole, Matt
Behnke (Fr. • Eden) and Ryan Elliott (Fr. • Manitowoc)
swam to a time of 1:45.15. UW-Oshkosh finished fourth in the
400-yard freestyle relay as Burg, Cole, Andrew Cipriano (Fr.
• Whitewater) and Justin Zangl (Fr. • Hartford)
posted a time of 3:26.23. UW-Stevens Point won the 200-yard
medley relay with a time of 1:33.75 and 400-yard freestyle relay
with an effort of 3:04.98.
UW-Stevens Point swept the remaining individual awards at the
championship as Anderson was named Swimmer of the Meet and Al
Boelk Coach of the Year. The Pointers’ Garth Newport received

Titans To Compete At WIAC Championships
The UW-Oshkosh men’s
and women’s swimming and diving teams will compete Thursday
(Feb. 9) through Saturday (Feb. 11) at the WIAC Championships in
Minneapolis, Minn. UW-River Falls is hosting the meet at the University
of Minnesota’s Aquatic Center.
In the 44th men’s championship, all but one individual champion
returns. UW-Stevens Point is looking for its seventh straight team
title and the 10th in school history. UW-Oshkosh finished fifth
a year ago with 463 points.
In the 35th women’s championship, UW-La Crosse is seeking
its fifth straight title and 10th in school history. Last year,
UW-Oshkosh finished fourth with 466 points.
UW-Oshkosh men likely to qualify for the finals are Nicholas Cole
(So. • West Bend) in the 500-yard freestyle, 1,000-yard freestyle
and 1,650-yard freestyle, Aaron Burg (Sr. • New London) in
the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke
and Jacob Chadderdon (Fr. • Madison) in the one-meter diving
and three-meter diving.
UW-Oshkosh women likely to advance to the finals are JoAnna Gibbons
(Sr. • Marathon) in the 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard individual
medley, Sarah Schettle (Jr. • Oshkosh) in the 100-yard breaststroke
and 200-yard breaststroke, Bridgette Schrampfer (So. • Neenah)
in the 100-yard backstroke, 200-yard backstroke, 200-yard individual
medley and 400-yard individual medley, Brittany Tobakos (So. •
DeForest) in the 200-yard freestyle, 200-yard butterfly, 200-yard
individual medley and 400-yard individual medley, Caitlin Zaccagnini
(Fr. • South Elgin, Ill.) in the 100 yard backstroke and 200-yard
backstroke and Julie Zahour (Fr. • Cedarburg) in the 50 yard
freestyle and 100-yard freestyle.
The top-six finishers in each event receive a medal, with the top-two
individuals gaining all-conference accolades. |
Titans Drop Home Finale To Blugolds
Nicholas Cole (So. • West Bend) and
Aaron Burg (Sr. • New London) won two events each to lead the UW-Oshkosh
men's swimming and diving team during a 154-68 loss to UW-Eau Claire on
Saturday (Jan. 28) in Albee Hall.
Cole took top honors in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:49.90
and the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:01.76. Cole's victory in the
500-yard freestyle was nearly 10 seconds faster than the next nearest
competitor.
Burg took top billing in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 49.95 and
the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:04.00.
Jacob Chadderdon (Fr. • Madison) took second-place honors in the
1-meter and 3-meter diving events with scores of 237.90 and 252.45, respectively.
Ryan Elliott (Fr. • Manitowoc) also placed second in the 100-yard
butterfly with a time of 59.74. The quartet of Burg, Cole, Elliott and
Matt Behnke (Fr. • Eden) added a second-place finish in the 200-yard
medley relay with a time of 1:47.91.
Registering fourth-place efforts were Behnke in the 50-yard freestyle
with a time of 25.20, Dan Johnson (Fr. • Anoka, Minn.) in the 200-yard
individual medley with a time of 2:22.86 and Zac Blum (Jr. • Manassas,
Va.) in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:06.07.
Eagles Soar Past Titans
The UW-Oshkosh men's swimming and diving
team received a pair of victories from Aaron Burg (Sr. • New London)
and Jacob Chadderdon (Fr. • Madison), but it wasn't enough as UW-La
Crosse defeated the Titans, 164-72, on Saturday (Jan. 14) in La Crosse.
Burg won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.68 and the 100-yard freestyle
with a time of 49.89. Chadderdon won the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events
with scores of 201.35 and 240.10, respectively.
UW-Oshkosh performers capturing third-place honors were Matt Behnke (Fr.
• Eden) in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:08.69, Zac
Blum (Jr. • Manassas, Va.) in the 100-yard freestyle with a time
of 11:54.50, Ryan Elliott (Fr. • Manitowoc) in the 100-yard butterfly
with a time of 1:00.70 and Jacob Schultz (So. • Franklin) in the
one-meter diving with a score of 139.60 and three-meter diving with a
mark of 143.05.
Vikings Outscore Titans
Aaron Burg (Sr. • New London), Jacob
Chadderdon (Fr. • Madison) and Ryan Elliott (Fr. • Manitowoc)
were the lone event winners for the UW-Oshkosh men's swimming and diving
team as it lost 141-89 to Lawrence University on Friday (Jan. 13) in Albee
Hall.
Burg won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 49.83, while Chadderdon
won the three-meter diving event with a score of 232.60 and Elliott the
200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:21.15. Burg also took second place
in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.95.
Other second-place performances for the Titans were Matt Behnke (Fr. •
Eden) in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:31.15 and Zac Blum
(Jr. • Manassas, Va.) in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of
2:21.65, Jacob Schultz (So, • Franklin) in the one-meter diving
with a score of 115.40 and Justin Zangl (Fr. • Hartford) in the
200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:01.01.
Placing third for UW-Oshkosh were Blum in
the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:55.34, Elliott in the 500-yard
freestyle with a time of 5:38.14, Schultz in the three-meter diving with
a score of 158.40, Andrew Cipriano (Fr. • Whitewater) in the 200-yard
butterfly with a time of 2:55.64 and Dan Johnson (Fr. • Anoka, Minn.)
in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 5:14.29.
Titans Defeat Cardinals, Lose To Red
Men, Vikings
The UW-Oshkosh men's
swimming and diving team posted a 1-2 record at a triple-dual meet held
Saturday (Jan. 7) in Kenosha. The Titans defeated North Central College
(Ill.), 125-52, and lost 116-82 to Lawrence University and 156-48 to Carthage
College.
The lone individual
event champion for the Titans was Aaron Burg (Sr. • New London).
Burg won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.34, beating Carthage
College's Bryce Davis by .18 of a second. Burg added a fourth-place finish
in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.15.
Nicholas Cole (So. • West Bend) captured a pair of top-three finishes
by placing second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:03.08 and
third in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:38.61. Dan Johnson
(Fr. • Anoka, Minn.) added a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard
butterfly with a time of 2:30.67.
The UW-Oshkosh quartet of Burg, Cole, Ryan Elliott (Fr. • Manitowoc)
and Justin Zangl (Fr. • Hartford) placed third in the 200-yard freestyle
relay with a time of 1:35.92.
Titans Finish Fifth At Gene Davis
Invitational
The UW-Oshkosh men's
swimming and diving team took fifth place with 316 points at the Gene
Davis Invitational held Friday and Saturday (Dec. 2-3) in Appleton. NCAA
Division I UW-Green Bay won the nine-team meet with 1,113 points.
Highlighting the meet
for UW-Oshkosh were the individual performances of Aaron Burg (Sr. •
New London) and Nicholas Cole (So. • West Bend).
Burg finished third
in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:03.08, fifth in the 100-yard
freestyle with a time of 49.84 and fifth in the 50-yard freestyle with
a time of 22:48.
Cole took third in
the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:40.60, fifth in the 500-yard
freestyle with a time of 5:02.21 and sixth in the 200-yard freestyle with
a time of 1:50.50.
The Titans' Jacob
Chadderdon (Fr. • Madison) scored 350.60 points in the one-meter
diving to finish sixth.
UW-Oshkosh finished
fifth in the 400-yard relay as the quartet of Burg, Cole, Ryan Elliott
(Fr. • Manitowoc) and Justin Zangel (Fr. • Hartford) swam
to a time of 3:28.10.
Titans Finish Fourth At
University Of Chicago Invitational
Despite not having a meet champion,
the UW-Oshkosh men's swimming and diving team swam and dove its
way to a fourth-place finish at the University of Chicago Invitational
held Friday and Saturday (Nov. 11-12) in Chicago, Ill. The Titans
tallied 335.5 points in the nine-team meet and had seven individuals
or relay squads finish in the top four places.
Leading the way for UW-Oshkosh was Jacob Chadderdon (Fr. •
Madison) who took second place in the three-meter diving with 197.30
points and fourth in the one-meter diving with 198.10 points. The
Titans' Nicholas Cole (So. •
West Bend) took second place in the 500-yard freestyle with a time
of 5:01.21.
The UW-Oshkosh relay teams of the 200-yard freestyle, 800-yard freestyle
and 400-yard medley all captured third place.
In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the
Titans' Matt Behnke (Fr. • Eden), Aaron Burg (Sr. •
New London), Ryan Elliott (Fr. • Manitowoc) and Justin Zangl
(Fr. • Hartford) swam to a time of 1:38.17. In the 800-yard
freestyle relay, UW-Oshkosh's Elliott, Andrew Cipriano (Fr. •
Whitewater), Dan Johnson (Fr. • Anoka, Minn.) and Adam Socha
(Fr. • Pleasant Prairie) posted a time of 8:55.40. In the
400-yard medley relay, the Titans' Behnke, Burg, Cole and Zac
Blum (Fr. • Manassas, Va.) swam to a time of 4:05.95.
Burg added a fourth-place time of 1:04.94
in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Warhawks Oust Titans
Jacob Chadderdon (Fr. •
Madison) swept both diving events while Nicholas Cole (So. •
West Bend) won two freestyle races, but it wasn’t enough as
the UW-Oshkosh men’s swimming and diving team lost a 141-96
decision to UW-Whitewater on Saturday (Nov. 5) in Whitewater.
Chadderdon won the one-meter diving by scoring 206.40 points and
the three-meter diving by accumulating 191.00 points.
Cole won the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:40.09, nearly
40 seconds faster than the second-place finisher, and the 500-yard
freestyle with a time of 5:09.60.
UW-Oshkosh also received a first-place effort from Aaron
Burg (Sr. • New London) in the 100-yard breaststroke with
a time of 1:04.89. He also placed second in the 50-yard freestyle
with a time of 23.18 and the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.69.
The Titans took first place in the
200-yard freestyle relay as Chadderdon, Tim Czajka (So. •
Mukwonago), Trevor Stellrecht (So. • Clintonville) and T.J.
Tersine (So. • Wind Lake) posted a time of 1:50.88.
Third-place listings went to UW-Oshkosh's
Jacob Schultz (So. • Franklin) in the one-meter diving event
with a score of 149.15 points and the Titan's 200-yard medley relay
team of Zac Blum (So. •
Manassas, Va.), Andrew Cipriano (Fr. • Whitewater), Dan Johnson
(Fr. • Anoka, Minn.) and Adam Socha (So. • Pleasant
Prairie) that posted a time of 2:04.77.
Titans Finish Third
At St. Norbert College Sprint Meet
Aaron Burg (Sr. • New London) swam
to a pair of second-place finishes as the UW-Oshkosh men’s swimming
and diving team ranked third at the St. Norbert College Sprint Meet held
Saturday (Oct. 29) in Appleton.
UW-Whitewater scored 508 points to win the six-team event, while Lawrence
University finished second with 418, UW-Oshkosh third with 254, Ripon
College fourth with 224, Beloit College fifth with 188 and Carroll College
sixth with 177.
Burg led the Titans by placing second in the 50-yard butterfly with a
time of 25.37 and the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.51. Patrick
McCory of Lawrence University won the 50-yard butterfly with a time of
24.68, while Adam Kolb of Lawrence University won the 100-yard freestyle
with a performance of 49.75.
UW-Oshkosh also received a third-place finish from Nicholas Cole (So.
• West Bend) in the 50-yard freestyle. Cole posted a time of 23.59
to trail the first-place time of 22.84 by Lawrence University’s
Kolb and the second-place time of 23.44 by UW-Whitewater’s Alex
Blair.
In the relays, UW-Oshkosh finished third twice as Burg, Cole, Matt Behnke
(Fr. • Eden) and Ryan Elliott (Fr. • Manitowoc) recorded times
of 4:12.59 in the 500-yard freestyle relay and 4:41.67 in the 500-yard
freestyle crescendo relay.
The Titans also placed fourth in the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard medley
relays.
Members of the 100-yard freestyle relay team that posted a time of 48.86
were Tim Czajka (So. • Mukwonago), Trevor Stellrecht (So. •
Clintonville), T.J. Tersine (So. • Wind Lake) and Justin Zangl (Fr.
• Hartford). Participants on the 100-yard medley relay team that
registered a time of 51.69 were Behnke, Burg, Cole and Zac Blum (Jr. •
Manassas, Va.).
No Diving events were held in the meet.
