Titans Defeat Eagles, Blugolds To End
Season
Wins of 4-3 over UW-La Crosse and
4-1 over UW-Eau Claire on Saturday (April 27) at
the Oshkosh YMCA Tennis Center gave the
UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team a distinguished
finish to the 2002 season. The Titans won 10 of
their last 12 dual meets to end the year with a
13-7 record.
Saturday's
matches were moved indoors because of rain and
the result forced each contest to be stopped when
one team earned four points. Against UW-La
Crosse, UW-Oshkosh earned its four points by
taking the first and third flights in doubles and
the first, fourth, fifth and sixth flights in
singles. The Titans compiled their four points
against UW-Eau Claire by winning the second,
fourth, fifth and sixth flights in singles.
Junior
Mark McGrath and freshman Ryan Olson won both of
their singles contests, while junior Brian Hagman
was victorious in his only outing. Competing in
the fourth flight of singles, McGrath won by
scores of 6-4, 6-2 against UW-La Crosse and 6-2,
6-4 against UW-Eau Claire. Olson, playing in the
sixth flight of singles, won by counts of 6-1,
6-0 against UW-La Crosse and 6-3, 6-4 against
UW-Eau Claire.

Titans Slay
Warhawks
The UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team
tasted success for the eighth time in 10 dual
meets when it defeated UW-Whitewater, 5-2, on
Friday (April 26) at the Kolf Sports Center
Complex. UW-Oshkosh (11-7) closes its regular
season on Saturday (April 27) by hosting UW-La
Crosse (15-4) and UW-Eau Claire (11-7) at the
Kolf Sports Center Complex.
UW-Oshkosh
won four of its six singles contests against the
Warhawks (10-3) as senior Garth Larson was
victorious in the first flight, junior Brian
Hagman in the second, junior Mark McGrath in the
fourth and senior Chris Kalk in the fifth. Larson
defeated UW-Whitewater's Chris Huebner by a 7-5,
6-2 score, while Hagman defeated Eric Rollinger,
6-4, 6-0, McGrath defeated Eric Berryman, 6-1,
6-0 and Kalk defeated Greg Iserman, 6-4, 6-4.
In
doubles play, UW-Oshkosh won twice as Hagman and
McGrath defeated the Warhawks' Berryman and
Daniel Senk in the second flight, 8-4, and
freshman Derek Gonwa and Kalk defeated Iserman
and Brad Saugstad in the third, 8-3.
In
the other match held at the Kolf Sports Center
Complex on Friday, UW-La Crosse edged UW-Eau
Claire, 4-3.

Titans Defeat
Foresters, Lose To Redmen
The UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team saw
its dual record go to 10-7 after a defeat of Lake
Forest College and a setback to Carthage College
on Saturday (April 20) in Kenosha. The Titans
chopped down the Foresters (1-9), 7-0, before
stumbling to the Redmen (21-4), 5-2.
Juniors
Brian Hagman and Mark McGrath were the lone
UW-Oshkosh players to go unbeaten in their
singles matches. Hagman posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory
in the second flight against Lake Forest
College's Evan Hall and a 7-5, 6-2 win in the
third flight against Carthage College's Nick
Buscaglia. McGrath compiled a 6-4, 6-0 victory in
the third flight against the Foresters' Konrad
Bienia and a 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 win in the fourth
flight against the Redmen's Dan Roller.
In
doubles play, UW-Oshkosh's number one tandem of
seniors Matt Ferry and Garth Larson also went
unbeaten. Ferry and Larson compiled an 8-1 win
over the Foresters' Gabe Beauchamp and Spencer
Peoples and an 8-5 verdict over Roller and Steve
Stitzel.
UW-Oshkosh
overwhelmed Lake Forest College in doubles action
as the Titans outscored the Foresters, 24-2,
including a perfect 8-0 count in the second
flight behind Hagman and McGrath.

Titans Split
Against NCAA Division II Foes
The UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team had
its six-match winning streak end when it split a
pair of decisions against NCAA Division II
opponents Winona State University and St. Cloud
State University on Saturday (April 13) in
Winona, Minn.
UW-Oshkosh
(9-6) opened play in the Mississippi River city
by posting a 7-2 win over host Winona State
University. The Titans took the match by winning
five of the six singles flights and two of the
three doubles flights.
St.
Cloud State University handed UW-Oshkosh its
first loss since early March by defeating the
Titans by a 6-3 tally in the nightcap. The
Huskies won four of the six singles flights and
two of the three doubles flights to take the
match.
Junior
Brian Hagman went unbeaten for the Titans on the
day by defeating Sean Kangrga of Winona State
University at number two singles by a 6-2, 6-1
score and edging Casey Haselwander of St. Cloud
State University at number three singles by a
6-3, 5-7 (10-8) count. Hagman also teamed with
junior Mark McGrath to win twice at number two
doubles.

Titans Extend
Win Streak To Five
The winning ways for the UW-Oshkosh
men's tennis team continued as the Titans
defeated Ripon College, 5-3, and Carroll College,
7-0, on Saturday (March 30) in Fond du Lac. The
Titans have won five straight dual matches since
dropping a 5-2 decision to DePauw University on
March 9.
UW-Oshkosh
(8-5) had three players win both of their
contests in singles play, junior Brian Hagman,
senior Chris Kalk and freshman Ryan Olson.
Against
Ripon College, Hagman was a 6-0, 6-2 winner in
the third flight, Kalk a 6-3, 1-6 (11-1) victor
in the fifth and Olson a 6-1, 6-1 winner in the
sixth. Against Carroll College, Hagman won by a
7-6, 6-1 score in the second flight, Kalk by a
6-0, 6-0 count in the fourth and Olson by a 6-0,
6-0 tally in the fifth.
UW-Oshkosh
won five of its six doubles debates, including an
8-0 score by Kalk and freshman Derek Gonwa in the
third flight against Carroll College.

Titans Conclude
Trip West Unbeaten
Recording its third shutout of the
season, the UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team defeated
first-time opponent Willamette University, 7-0,
on Friday (March 22) in Whittier, Calif.
The
Titans, who previously swept Concordia University
and St. Norbert College by the same 7-0 counts,
concluded their trip to California unbeaten in
three duale meets after defeating Alliant
International University on March 18 and the
University of La Verne on March 21.
UW-Oshkosh
won every singles flight in straight sets,
outscoring the Bearcats, 72-20. Freshman Ryan
Olson was a 6-0, 6-0 winner in the sixth flight,
while senior Chris Kalk was victorious by a 6-0,
6-1 score in the fifth and senior Matt Ferry by a
6-3, 6-1 tally in the second.
In
doubles play, UW-Oshkosh won 24 of the 35 points,
including an 8-1 decision by freshman Derek Gonwa
and Kalk in the third flight.

Titans Win Again
On California Trip
The UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team
evened its dual record at 5-5 following its 5-2
win over the University of La Verne on Thursday
(March 21) in La Verne, Calif. UW-Oshkosh, which
defeated Alliant International University on
Monday (March 18), concludes its trip to
California on Friday (March 22) by playing
Willamette University in Whittier.
UW-Oshkosh
won four of the six singles flights against the
Leopards as senior Garth Larson won in the first
by a 6-3, 6-7 (15-13) score, senior Chris Kalk by
a 6-2, 6-2 score in the fourth, freshman Ryan
Olson by a 6-1, 6-1 score in the fifth and
freshman Derek Gonwa by a 6-0, 7-5 score in the
sixth.
Doubles
winners for the Titans were senior Matt Ferry and
Larson by an 8-6 count in the first flight and
Gonwa and Olson by an 8-0 tally in the second.
Junior
Brian Hagman lost a tough contest for UW-Oshkosh
at number two singles, dropping a 6-3, 3-6 (10-7)
decision to the Leopards' Todd Hurst.

Titans Open
California Trip With Win
The UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team
snapped a four-match losing streak by defeating
Alliant International University, 6-3, on Monday
(March 18) in San Diego, Calif.
The
contest was the first of three for the Titans on
their spring break trip to California, with the
other two matches scheduled for Thursday (March
21) against the University of La Verne in La
Verne and Friday (March 22) against Willamette
University in Whittier.
Winning
singles matches for the Titans were junior Mark
McGrath by a 6-0, 6-0 score in the third flight,
senior Chris Kalk by a 6-4, 6-4 score in the
fourth flight, freshman Ryan Olson by a 6-1, 6-1
score in the fifth flight and freshman Derek
Gonwa by a 6-0, 6-0 score in the sixth.
UW-Oshkosh
(4-5) also won two of its three doubles contests
against Alliant International University (4-8),
formerly U.S. International University. Junior
Brian Hagman and McGrath of UW-Oshkosh won by an
8-4 count in the second flight, while teammates
Gonwa and Kalk won by an 8-1 tally in the third.

Titans Served A
Pair of Losses In Hoosier State
NCAA Division I Xavier University
and 2001 NCAA Division III post-season
participant DePauw University handed the
UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team a pair of setbacks
on Saturday (March 9) in Greencastle, Ind.
UW-Oshkosh (3-5) fell by scores of 7-0 to Xavier
University and 5-2 to DePauw University.
Xavier
University (7-2) won all six singles flights and
two of the three doubles flights against
UW-Oshkosh. The lone victory for the Titans came
at number one doubles, where seniors Matt Ferry
and Garth Larson won by an 8-6 count over senior
Aaron Bauer and sophomore Brad Meadors of the
Musketeers. None of the six singles flights
between the two combatants went to a third game.
Against
DePauw University (3-1), UW-Oshkosh won twice in
singles and once in doubles play. Singles winners
for the Titans were senior Chris Kalk by a 4-6,
6-4, 7-5 score over freshman Oscar Lai in the
fifth flight and freshman Ryan Olson by a 6-2,
6-4 score over sophomore Darren Eblovi in the
sixth. UW-Oshkosh's lone doubles win went to
juniors Brian Hagman and Mark McGrath in the
second flight, an 8-3 victory over freshman Aaron
Gress and junior Greg Nammari.

Titans Swept By
Crusaders, Kohawks
The UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team had
its three-match winning streak turn into a
two-match losing skid when it dropped decisions
of 4-3 to Wheaton College and 6-1 to Coe College
on Saturday (March 2) in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
UW-Oshkosh
(3-3) won all three doubles flights in its match
with Wheaton College, but lost the contest with
the Crusaders after gaining only two victories in
six singles flights.
Winning
in singles play for the Titans were senior Chris
Kalk by a 6-2, 6-2 score in the fifth flight and
freshman Ryan Olson by a 6-3, 6-2 score in the
sixth. Doubles winners were seniors Matt Ferry
and Garth Larson by a 9-8 score in the first
flight, juniors Brian Hagman and Mark McGrath by
an 8-5 score in the second and freshman Derek
Gonwa and senior Chris Kalk by an 8-3 score in
the third.
Coe
College posted its convincing victory over
UW-Oshkosh by winning five of six singles and two
of three doubles flights. The Titans' lone
singles win against the Kohawks went to Gonwa by
a 6-5, 6-4 score in the sixth flight. Hagman and
McGrath compiled UW-Oshkosh's only doubles
victory, an 8-4 tally in the second flight.

Titans Apprehend
Pioneers
The UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team won
its third straight match by defeating Grinnell
College, 6-1, on Friday (March 1) in Cedar
Rapids, Iowa.
UW-Oshkosh
(3-1) won five of the six singles and two of the
three doubles flights to capture Grinnell College
for the second consecutive year.
Winning
their singles flight in straight sets for
UW-Oshkosh were junior Brian Hagman by a 6-1, 6-2
score at number three, junior Mark McGrath by a
6-1, 6-3 score at number four and freshman Ryan
Olson at number six. UW-Oshkosh also recorded
victories in singles play from seniors Garth
Larson in the second flight and Chris Kalk in the
third.
Victorious
in their doubles contests were Hagman and McGrath
by an 8-3 score in the second flight and freshman
Derek Gonwa and Kalk by an 8-1 count in the
third.
UW-Oshkosh
stays in Cedar Rapids for a pair of matches on
Saturday (March 2), battling Wheaton College and
Coe College.

Titans Record
Second Straight Shutout
The UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team
recorded its second consecutive by defeating St.
Norbert College, 7-0, on Saturday (February 23)
in Green Bay. The Titans' victory follows their
7-0 rout of Concordia University on February 16.
UW-Oshkosh
won 99 of the 121 games in the match, including
24 of 27 in doubles play. The Titans were
victorious in 17 of their 18 sets in singles
action, with only the first flight going to a
third and deciding set.
Winning
their singles flight in straight sets for
UW-Oshkosh (2-1) were senior Matt Ferry by a 6-3,
6-1 score at number two, junior Brian Hagman by a
6-0, 6-2 score at number three, junior Mark
McGrath by a 6-0, 6-0 score at number four,
senior Chris Kalk by a 6-2, 6-1 score at number
five and freshman Derek Gonwa by a 6-0, 6-1 score
at number six. Senior Garth Larson took his
number one singles flight by a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2
score.
In
doubles play, Ferry and Larson won by an 8-2
tally in the first flight, Hagman and McGrath by
an 8-1 score in the second flight and Gonwa and
Kalk by an 8-0 score in the third flight.

Falcons
The UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team
rebounded from Saturday's (February 16) 7-0 loss
to NCAA Division I UW-Green Bay by routing
Concordia University, 7-0, on Thursday (February
21) in Oshkosh.
UW-Oshkosh
lost just 28 games in the match, with only two
singles flights going to a third set.
Winning
their singles flight in straight sets for the
Titans (1-1) were senior Matt Ferry by a 6-3, 6-1
score at number one, senior Garth Larson by a
6-0, 6-1 score at number two, junior Mark McGrath
by a 6-3, 6-0 score at number three, senior Chris
Kalk by a 6-1, 6-2 score at number five and
freshman Derek Gonwa by a 6-1, 6-1 score at
number six. Junior Brian Hagman took his contest
at number three singles by a 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 score.
UW-Oshkosh
won 24 of its 30 games in doubles play as Ferry
and Larson were victorious by an 8-1 count in the
first flight, Hagman and McGrath by an 8-4 score
in the second flight and Gonwa and Kalk by an 8-1
tally in the third flight.

Phoenix Top Titans
The 2001-02 dual opener for the
UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team was one that the
Titans would like to forget as they dropped a 7-0
decision to NCAA Division I UW-Green Bay on
Saturday (February 16) in Green Bay.
UW-Green
Bay won every singles flight in straight sets,
with only senior Matt Ferry, junior Brian Hagman
and senior Chris Kalk winning four or more games.
Ferry lost a 6-3, 6-2 decision at number two
singles, Hagman a 6-3, 6-1 contest at number
three singles and Kalk a 6-2, 6-2 outcome at
number five singles.
UW-Oshkosh
was outscored 24-10 in doubles play, with Ferry
and senior Garth Larson losing by an 8-4 score in
the first flight, Hagman and junior Mark McGrath
by an 8-3 count in the second flight and freshman
Derek Gonwa and Kalk by an 8-4 tally in the third
flight.
UW-Oshkosh,
which posted a 16-7 dual meet record and advanced
to the NCAA Division III Championship a year ago,
dropped a 6-1 decision to UW-Green Bay last
season when the two teams met.
