Titans Finish Second At NCTA Championship

Led by champions in three singles and two doubles flights, the UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team finished second at the Northern Collegiate Tennis Association (NCTA) Championship held Friday and Saturday (April 25-26) in La Crosse.

UW-La Crosse won the six-team event with 47 points, while UW-Oshkosh finished second with 41 points, UW-Eau Claire third with 37 and UW-Whitewater fourth with 29. The team scoring was concluded by fifth-place Winona State University (Minn.) with 25 points and sixth-place University of Minnesota-Morris with 10.

Winning singles titles for UW-Oshkosh were Mark McGrath (Sr. • Union Grove) in the second flight, Ryan Olson (Sr. • Oshkosh) in the third and Derek Gonwa (So. • De Pere) in the fourth. Gonwa needed three victories to win his flight, including a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 decision over Kyle Buchmeier of Winona State University in the title match, while McGrath and Olson needed two wins each after receiving first round byes. McGrath defeated Matt Widder of UW-Eau Claire, 6-3, 7-6, in his title contest, while Olson ousted Jon Palmer of UW-La Crosse, 7-5, 2-6, 6-4, in his championship bout.

In doubles action, UW-Oshkosh's Brian Hagman (Sr. • Manitowoc) and McGrath in the first flight and Gonwa and Olson in the second were crowned champions. Both tandems won two matches after receiving a first round bye, with Hagman and McGrath defeating Palmer and Drew Pollek of UW-La Crosse, 8-4, in their title match and Gonwa and Olson edging Tom Dubinski and Nader Kreish of UW-La Crosse, 9-8, in their championship contest.

Finishing second for the Titans was Hagman at number one singles. Hagman opened his flight with a pair of victories before dropping a 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 decision to UW-La Crosse's Kreish.

Titans Edge Blugolds, Topped By Warhawks

Brian HagmanMark McGrathThe UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team recorded mixed results in dual matches against UW-Eau Claire and UW-Whitewater on Saturday (April 19) in La Crosse.

UW-Oshkosh (12-7) registered a 1-1 record on the day as it tallied a 4-3 victory over long-time nemesis UW-Eau Claire (6-9), before dropping a 5-2 decision to UW-Whitewater (8-12).

UW-Oshkosh scored all of its team points against UW-Eau Claire in singles play, recording four wins in six decisions.

Winning singles contests for the Titans were Brian Hagman (Sr. • Manitowoc) by a 6-1, 6-1 score in the first flight over the Blugolds' Ryan Gruhlke, Mark McGrath (Sr. • Union Grove) by a 6-3, 7-6 count in the second flight over Matt Widder, Ryan Olson (Sr. • Oshkosh) by a 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 tally in the third flight over Tyler Litscher and Derek Gonwa (So. • De Pere) by a 6-3, 6-4 marking in the fourth flight over Adam Arians.

The Titans' lone doubles win came in the second flight, were Gonwa and Olson defeated the Blugolds' Gruhlke and Justin Koehler, 8-2. The UW-Oshkosh tandem upped their season record to 12-3 with the win.

In the loss to UW-Whitewater, UW-Oshkosh won two singles contests and one doubles.

McGrath was victorious for the Titans in number two singles as he defeated the Warhawks' Greg Iserman, 6-4, 6-2. UW-Oshkosh also posted a win in the sixth singles flight, where Jeff Hagman (So. • Manitowoc) defeated UW-Whitewater's Michael Salentine, 7-6, 6-2. In doubles play, UW-Oshkosh's Brian Hagman and McGrath recorded an 8-5 win in the first flight over UW-Whitewater's Ted Bradley and Eric Berryman.

Eagles Fly Past Titans

Brian HagmanCounting all of its team points in singles play, UW-La Crosse defeated UW-Oshkosh, 5-2, in a men's tennis match held Friday (April 18) in La Crosse.

The Eagles (14-3) won five of their six singles skirmishes, with the lone defeat coming in the first flight as Nader Khreish dropped a 7-6 (4), 1-6 (10) contest to UW-Oshkosh's Brian Hagman (Sr. • Manitowoc). The win was Hagman's 10th in 16 decisions this season.

UW-Oshkosh (11-6) dropped a pair of three-set battles in singles play as Mark McGrath (Sr. • Union Grove) lost a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 decision to UW-La Crosse's Drew Pollek in the second flight and D.J. Dunsker (Jr. • Naperville, Ill.) a 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 outcome to the Eagles' Tom Dubinski in the fifth.

In doubles play, UW-Oshkosh was victorious twice as Hagman and McGrath edged UW-La Crosse's Jon Palmer and Pollek in the first flight by an 8-6 score and Derek Gonwa (So. • De Pere) and Ryan Olson (Sr. • Oshkosh) the Eagles' Dubinski and Khreish by a 9-7 count in the second. Hagman and McGrath moved to 10-3 on the season with the win, while Gonwa and Olson went to 10-2.

Titans Nipped By Red Hawks, Conquer Pioneers

Brian HagmanMark McGrathThe UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team won 13 of its 18 singles and doubles contests, but it wasn't enough as the Titans split matches with Ripon College and Carroll College on Saturday (March 29) in Fond du Lac.

UW-Oshkosh (10-5) opened its doubleheader by dropping a 5-2 decision to Ripon College (9-6) before routing Carroll College (2-4), 7-0. The shutout of the Pioneers was the Titans' seventh of the season and their third in four matches.

UW-Oshkosh swept all three of its doubles contests against Ripon College, but unfortunately for the Titans those three wins resulted in only one team point. The Red Hawks took the match by winning five of the six singles bouts.

Victorious in doubles play for the Titans were Brian Hagman (Sr. • Manitowoc) and Mark McGrath (Sr. • Union Grove) by an 8-3 score over Adam Bruno and Jared Goerlitz in the first flight, Derek Gonwa (So. • De Pere) and Ryan Olson (Sr. • Oshkosh) by a 9-7 count over Mike Sumnict and Paul Vandenboogaard in the second and Jeff Hagman (Fr. • Manitowoc) and Nick Redmann (Fr. • Oshkosh) by an 8-6 tally over Scott Bicknell and Cole Exner in the third. UW-Oshkosh's lone singles win came in the sixth flight, where Jeff Hagman (Fr. • Manitowoc) defeated Mike O'Neill, 6-4, 6-7 (10-6).

Against Carroll College, UW-Oshkosh dominated the Pioneers by winning 96 of the 115 games played. The Titans' singles victories were highlighted by Gonwa's 6-0, 6-0 win over David Pye in the fourth flight, McGrath's 6-1, 6-1 win over Josh Potaracke in the second and Josh Hardel's (Fr. • Oshkosh) 6-1, 6-1 win over Chip Bartel in the sixth. Other singles winners for UW-Oshkosh were Brian Hagman in the first flight, Olson in the second and D.J. Dunsker (Jr. • Naperville, Ill.) in the fifth.

In doubles play, UW-Oshkosh received wins of 8-1 from Jeff Hagman and Redmann over Bartel and Pye in the third flight, 8-2 from Brian Hagman and McGrath over Charlie DeCleene and Potaracke in the first and 8-3 from Gonwa and Olson over Jayson Memken and Craig Mours in the third.

Titans Pummel Beavers

Derek GonwaThe UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team recorded its sixth shutout of the season, including its second in as many days, when it punished California Institute of Technology, 7-0, on Thursday (March 20) in Pasadena, Calif.

UW-Oshkosh (9-4) closed its four-match trip to California with a 3-1 record, posting previous wins of 4-3 over Chapman University (Calif.) and 7-0 over Whittier College (Calif.). The Titans' lone setback was a 6-3 count to Westmont College (Calif.).

UW-Oshkosh dominated California Institute of Technology (6-7) by winning 72 of 88 singles and 24 of 28 doubles games. The closest contest in the match came at number five singles, where the Titans' Jeff Hagman (Fr. • Manitowoc) defeated the Beavers' Kevin Monjati, 6-3, 7-6.

Winning easily in singles play for the Titans were Nick Redmann (Fr. • Oshkosh) by a 6-0, 6-0 score over Lee Zhu in the sixth flight, Derek Gonwa (So. • De Pere) by a 6-0, 6-1 tally over Jae-Woo Choi in the third and D.J. Dunsker (Jr. • Naperville, Ill.) by a 6-0, 6-1 count over Vincent Fernandez in the fourth. UW-Oshkosh also recorded singles wins of 6-2, 6-0 in the first flight by Brian Hagman (Sr. • Manitowoc) and 6-2, 6-1 in the second by Ryan Olson (Sr. • Oshkosh).

The Titans overwhelmed the Beavers in doubles action, with Gonwa and Jeff Hagman defeating Choi and Monjati in the second flight and Eric Aronson (Jr. • South Milwaukee) and Josh Hardel (Fr. • Oshkosh) ousting Britton Boras and Zhu in the third by identical 8-1 scores. UW-Oshkosh's Brian Hagman and Olson picked up an 8-2 doubles win over Fernandez and Parth Venkat in the first flight.

Titans Rout Poets

Brian HagmanLosing only 19 games, the UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team crunched Whittier College (Calif.), 7-0, on Wednesday (March 19) in Whittier, Calif. The shutout was the fifth of the season for the Titans (8-4), who conclude their four-match trek to California on Thursday (March 20) by playing at the California Institute of Technology.

UW-Oshkosh, 2-1 on its trip to California, dominated Whittier College by winning 72 of its 90 singles games and 24 of its 25 doubles contests.

Brian Hagman (Sr. • Manitowoc) went unbeaten in 20 games for UW-Oshkosh as he defeated Luke McConnell in number one singles, 6-0, 6-0, and teamed with Ryan Olson (Sr. • Oshkosh) to oust Will Hathaway and Nick Julia at number one doubles, 8-0.

Nick Redmann (Fr. • Oshkosh) also posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over Hovig Artinian at number six singles, while Eric Aronson (Jr. • South Milwaukee) and Josh Hardel (Fr. • Oshkosh) recorded an 8-0 victory over Artinian and Dave Duran at number three doubles.

Other winners in singles play for the Titans were Olson in the second flight, Derek Gonwa (So. • De Pere) in the third, D.J. Dunsker (Jr. • Naperville, Ill.) in the fourth and Jeff Hagman (Fr. • Manitowoc) in the sixth. The remaining doubles victory for UW-Oshkosh went to Gonwa and Jeff Hagman in the second flight.

Titans Tame Panthers

Derek GonwaThe UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team swept all three of its doubles contests en route to a 4-3 victory over Chapman University (Calif.) on Tuesday (March 18) in Orange, Calif. The win evened UW-Oshkosh's record on its four-match trip to California at 1-1, with contests yet to come on Wednesday (March 19) at Whittier College (Calif.) and Thursday (March 20) at the California Institute of Technology.

Each team scored three points in singles play, but UW-Oshkosh (7-4) counted the lone tally in doubles action by sweeping all three contests against Chapman University (2-6).

Winning in singles play for the Titans were Derek Gonwa (So. • De Pere) in the third flight, Nick Redmann (Fr. • Oshkosh) in the fifth and Jeff Hagman (Fr. • Manitowoc) in the sixth. Gonwa defeated Bryan Bruno, 6-2, 6-3, while Redmann routed Justin Park, 6-1, 6-1. Hagman won his contest by default.

In doubles action, UW-Oshkosh's Brian Hagman (Sr. • Manitowoc) and Ryan Olson (Sr. • Oshkosh) defeated Ali Kermani and Scott Kimm in the first flight while Gonwa and Jeff Hagman topped Bruno and Justin Jonas in the second, both by 8-5 scores. In the third flight, the Titans' Eric Aronson (Jr. • South Milwaukee) and Josh Hardel (Fr. • Oshkosh) won by default.

Nationally-Ranked Warriors Top Titans

Derek GonwaNationally-ranked Westmont College (Calif.) ended the three-match winning streak of the UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team by posting a 6-3 victory over the Titans on Monday (March 17) in Santa Barbara, Calif. Westmont College (7-2), ranked 11th in the NAIA, took four of six singles contests and two of three doubles battles against UW-Oshkosh (6-4).

Registering wins for the Titans in singles play were Ryan Olson (Sr. • Oshkosh) in the second flight and Derek Gonwa (So. • De Pere) in the third. Olson defeated Bryn Mercado, 6-3, 3-6 (10-5), while Gonwa topped on Annett, 7-5, 7-6.

In doubles action, the lone UW-Oshkosh victory went to Gonwa and Jeff Hagman (Fr. • Manitowoc) in the second flight. The UW-Oshkosh duo defeated the Warriors' David Gilbert and Mercado by an 8-4 count.

Monday's contest was the first of four for UW-Oshkosh in California, with other matches scheduled for Tuesday (March 18) at Chapman University (Calif.), Wednesday (March 19) at Whittier College (Calif.) and Thursday (March 20) at the California Institute of Technology.

Titans Have Rough Day In Iowa

Mark McGrathRyan OlsonThe UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team won only twice in singles play and just once in doubles as it dropped a pair of matches to Wheaton College (Ill.) and Coe College (Iowa) on Saturday (March 1) in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

UW-Oshkosh (3-3) opened the twinbill with a 5-2 loss to three-time defending College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin champion Wheaton College before suffering a 7-0 setback to two-time Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champion Coe College.

In UW-Oshkosh's loss to Wheaton College (4-1), only Mark McGrath (Sr. • Union Grove) and Ryan Olson (Sr. • Oshkosh) were victorious. McGrath defeated Oliver Oatman in number two singles by a 6-1, 3-0 score, while Olson edged Breck Schlueter in number three singles by a 7-6, 7-6 count.

UW-Oshkosh lost all three of its doubles contests to the Thunder, including a 9-8 setback by Derek Gonwa (So. • De Pere) and Olson in the second flight and a 9-7 loss by Brian Hagman (Sr. • Manitowoc) and Mark McGrath (Sr. • Union Grove) in the first.

Against Coe College (5-1), UW-Oshkosh's lone win came at number two doubles as Gonwa and Olson defeated the KoHawks' Lucas Elliott and Phil Williams, 8-2.

In singles play, UW-Oshkosh lost four of its six contests in straight sets. The only UW-Oshkosh players to take their opponent to a third and deciding set were Olson in the third flight and Gonwa in the fourth. Olson dropped a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 decision to Adam Elliott, while Gonwa lost a 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 bout to Andrew Mikkila.

Titans Catch Pioneers

Ryan OlsonThe UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team captured the top-four singles and the top-two doubles flights en route to a 5-2 victory over defending Midwest Conference champion Grinnell College (Iowa) on Friday (March 28) in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

UW-Oshkosh (3-1) claimed its four singles victories in straight sets as Brian Hagman (Sr. • Manitowoc) defeated Jim Finnessy, 6-3, 6-4 in the first flight, Mark McGrath (Sr. • Union Grove) defeated Rick Fenbert, 6-2, 6-2 in the second, Ryan Olson (Sr. • Oshkosh) defeated Kushal Shah, 6-0, 6-1 in the third and Derek Gonwa (So. • De Pere) defeated Julian West, 6-2, 6-1 in the fourth.

All four UW-Oshkosh singles winners were also victorious in doubles play, including Hagman and McGrath who bested Fenbert and Finnessy in the first flight, 8-3. In number two doubles, Gonwa and Olson defeated Shah and West, 8-6.

UW-Oshkosh has defeated Grinnell College three straight times, including by a 6-1 count last year and a 5-2 score in 2001.

Titans Suffocate Green Knights

Ryan OlsonThe UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team lost only 13 games in smothering St. Norbert College, 7-0, on Friday (Feb. 21) at the YMCA Tennis Center in Oshkosh. The shutout victory was the second in three matches for the Titans this young season.

UW-Oshkosh (2-1) took 72 of the 80 games in singles play, with the Titans' Ryan Olson (Sr. • Oshkosh) defeating the Green Knights' Andy Schaller in the third flight by a 6-0, 6-0 score. The Titans also had three 6-0, 6-1 singles victories as Brian Hagman (Sr. • Manitowoc) defeated Andy Knutson in the first flight, Derek Gonwa (So. • De Pere) topped Marc Lacher in the fourth and D.J. Dunsker (Jr. • Naperville, Ill.) stifled Eric Siems in the fifth.

UW-Oshkosh also received 6-2, 6-1 singles wins from Mark McGrath (Sr. • Union Grove) in the second flight and Nick Redmann (Fr. • Oshkosh) in the sixth.

The Titans won 24 of 28 games in doubles action, including an 8-0 victory by Eric Aronson (Jr. • South Milwaukee) and Jeff Hagman (Fr. • Manitowoc) over the Green Knights' Jason Leist and Eric Siems in the third flight. Other UW-Oshkosh doubles wins went to Brian Hagman and McGrath by an 8-3 score in the first flight and Gonwa and Olson by an 8-1 count in the second.

Phoenix Shut Down Titans

Brian HagmanTwo days after overwhelming Concordia University in its season opener, the UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team suffered a 7-0 loss to NCAA Division I UW-Green Bay on Sunday (Feb. 16) in Green Bay.

UW-Green Bay won all six singles and all three doubles flights against UW-Oshkosh (1-1), with the Phoenix taking 72 of the 95 singles games and 25 of the 37 doubles contests.

In singles play, Brian Hagman (Sr. • Manitowoc), Ryan Olson (Sr. • Oshkosh) and Derek Gonwa (So. • De Pere) all lost competitive debates for the Titans. Hagman lost in the first flight by a 6-3, 6-2 score to Robert Shamelikian, Olson in the third flight by a 6-1, 6-4 count to Barry Hankel and Gonwa in the fourth flight by a 6-3, 6-4 tally to Tom Heidenberger.

The tightest match for UW-Oshkosh in doubles competition was in the second flight, where Gonwa and Olson dropped a 9-8 contest to UW-Green Bay's Ben Davis and Tyler Dorn. In number one doubles, another competitive match was played as Hagman and Mark McGrath (Sr. • Union Grove) lost an 8-4 affair to UW-Green Bay's Hankel and Heidenberger.

Titans Humble Falcons In Season Opener

Derek GonwaThe UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team made its 2003 debut an impressive one as it routed Concordia University, 7-0, on Friday (Feb. 14) at the Oshkosh YMCA Tennis Center. The contest was the second between the two schools, with the Titans winning by an identical 7-0 count a year ago.

UW-Oshkosh was victorious in all nine flights against Concordia University, winning 72 of 86 games in singles play and 24 of 29 games in doubles competition. The Titans' most lopsided win came at number two doubles, where Derek Gonwa (So. • De Pere) and Ryan Olson (Sr. • Oshkosh) teamed to defeat the Falcons' Sean Kaufenberg and Chad Urban by an 8-0 tally.

The Titans also had a pair of easy wins in singles play as Gonwa squashed Kaufenberg in the fourth flight and Nick Redman (Fr. • Oshkosh) trounced Adam Peck in the sixth flight by the same 6-1, 6-0 scores.

Other singles winners for UW-Oshkosh were Brian Hagman (Sr. • Manitowoc) in the first flight, Mark McGrath (Sr. • Union Grove) in the second, Olson in the third and D.J. Dunsker (Jr. • Naperville, Ill.) in the sixth.
