Titans Finish Third At NCTA Championship

The UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team took third place at the Northern Collegiate Tennis Association (NCTA) Championship held Friday and Saturday (April 16-17) in La Crosse.

Defending champion UW-La Crosse won the seven-team event with 48 points, while UW-Whitewater finished second with 46, UW-Oshkosh third with 41, Winona State University (Minn.) fourth with 40, UW-Eau Claire fifth with 37, College of St. Scholastica (Minn.) sixth with 26 and the University of Minnesota-Morris seventh with 14.

UW-Oshkosh had one individual champion in the tournament as Eric Aronson Sr. • South Milwaukee) captured the number two singles crown. Aronson defeated Josh Grove of the University of Minnesota-Morris, 6-1, 6-0, and Kyle Savelkoul of Winona State University, 6-4, 5-7 (10-4), before ousting Jon Palmer of UW-La Crosse in the title match, 6-2, 4-6 (10-7).

The Titans also received a second-place finish in number three singles from Jeff Hagman (Jr. • Manitowoc), a fourth-place finish in number one singles from Todd Miller (So. • Shorewood) and a fifth-place finish in number four singles from Joel Vedder (Fr. • Mahtomedi, Minn.). Hagman defeated Jon Haycraft of the College of St. Scholastica, 6-3, 7-5, and Chris Slagle of UW-Eau Claire, 6-2, 3-6 (10-7), before dropping a 6-1, 6-2 decision to Kyle Buchmeier of Winona State University in the title contest.

In doubles play, UW-Oshkosh landed a pair of second-place finishes and one third.

Hagman and Mark Foster (Sr. • Delavan) finished second in number two doubles after dropping an 8-3 decision to Palmer and Drew Pollek of UW-La Crosse in the title bout. Previously, the UW-Oshkosh tandem defeated Cory Eider and Derek Johnson of the College of St. Scholastica, 8-6, and Matt Griffiths and Greg Isermann of UW-Whitewater, 8-4.

Vedder and Josh Hardel (So. • Oshkosh) placed second in number three doubles after losing an 8-1 decision to Steve Klass and Derek Nelson of UW-Whitewater in the championship contest. Earlier, the UW-Oshkosh duo topped Andy Dobbins and Garrett Mason of UW-La Crosse, 8-6, and Chris Baga and Jeff Peterson of UW-Eau Claire, 8-6.

Finishing third at number one doubles for the Titans were Aronson and Miller.

UW-Oshkosh concluded the 2004 season with a 10-11 dual meet record, including 7-0 wins over Whittier College (Calif.), Ripon College, Dominican University (Ill.) and Marian College. The Titans rebounded from a 1-8 start by winning nine of their next contests.

Hagman led UW-Oshkosh with a 16-8 singles record, while Aronson went 15-8 and Foster 10-7. In doubles play, Foster and Hagman went 12-6 for the year, while Hardel and Vedder went 10-9.

Titans Fall To Blugolds, Clip Warhawks


Eric AronsonJeff HagmanThe UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team concluded its dual meet schedule for the 2004 season by splitting a pair of matches on Saturday (April 10) in Eau Claire.

UW-Oshkosh (10-11) dropped a 4-3 decision to UW-Eau Claire (5-10) before defeating UW-Whitewater (14-9) by a 4-3 count. The Titans finished their dual meet schedule by winning nine of their last 12 contests.

Against UW-Eau Claire, UW-Oshkosh received singles wins from Eric Aronson (Sr. • South Milwaukee) in the second flight and Jeff Hagman (Jr. • Manitowoc) in the third. Aronson recorded a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Adam Arians, while Hagman posted a 6-2, 6-0 win over Chris Slagle.

In doubles play, UW-Oshkosh compiled a pair of victories as Aronson and Todd Miller (So. • Shorewood) won in the first flight and Mark Foster (Sr. • Delavan) and Hagman in the second. Aronson and Miller defeated Arians and Matt Widder, 8-4, while Foster and Hagman ousted Chad Fawcett and Slagle, 8-2.

Against UW-Whitewater, UW-Oshkosh won three times in both singles and doubles play. The Titans' dual meet win gained revenge for a 7-0 loss to the Warhawks on February 7.

Winning singles bouts for the Titans were Aronson in the second flight, Hagman in the third and Joel Vedder (Fr. • Mahtomedi, Minn.) in the fourth. Aronson had a 7-6, 6-2 victory over Matt Griffiths, Hagman a 7-5, 6-1 win over Greg Isermann and Vedder a 6-4, 3-6 (10-7) triumph over Eric Berryman.

The Titans swept all three doubles contests from the Warhawks as Aronson and Miller defeated Berryman and Jordan Shilts by an 8-4 score in the first flight, Foster and Hagman topped Griffiths and Isermann by an 8-3 tally in the second and Josh Hardel (So. • Oshkosh) and Vedder edged Steve Klass and Derek Nelson by a 9-7 count in the third.

Eagles End Titans' Winning Streak


Jeff HagmanA six-match winning streak for the UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team came to an end as UW-La Crosse defeated the Titans, 5-2, on Friday (April 9) in Eau Claire. It was the Titans' first loss since a 5-2 setback to Chapman University (Calif.) on March 18.

UW-Oshkosh (9-10) got singles wins from Jeff Hagman (Jr. • Manitowoc) in the third flight and Mark Foster (Sr. • Delavan) in the sixth. Hagman recorded a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 victory over Mike Mooren, while Foster posted a 6-3, 6-1 win over Scott Swanson.

UW-La Crosse (16-3) captured victories in four singles flights, with the tightest being a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 win for Jeff Strand in the fourth flight over UW-Oshkosh's Joel Vedder (Fr. • Mahtomedi, Minn.).

UW-La Crosse, which defeated UW-Oshkosh by a 6-1 count on March 6, took all three doubles contests against the Titans. The closest bouts were 8-4 victories for the Eagles' Erik Krohn and Mooren in the first flight and Andy Dobbins and Garrett Mason in the third. Krohn and Mooren tripped UW-Oshkosh's Eric Aronson (Sr. • South Milwaukee) and Todd Miller (So. • Shorewood), while Dobbins and Mason topped the Titans' Josh Hardel (So. • Oshkosh) and Vedder.

Titans Tame Sabres


Trevor DegermanThe UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team evened its dual meet record at 9-9 after thumping Marian College, 7-0, on Wednesday (April 7) in Fond du Lac. It was the sixth straight victory and the eighth in the last nine matches for the Titans.

UW-Oshkosh had little trouble in the match as it won each of the six singles contests in straight sets. The Titans also outscored the Sabres (1-7) by a game count of 24-3 in doubles play.

Joel Vedder (Fr. • Mahtomedi, Minn.) and Mark Foster (Sr. • Delavan) each posted 6-0, 6-0 singles wins for the Titans, with Vedder defeating Brian Ottman in the third flight and Foster ousting T.J. DiPrizio in the fifth. UW-Oshkosh also had Josh Hardel (So. • Oshkosh) trip Scott LaPlant in the fourth flight by a 6-0, 6-1 score and Trevor Degerman (Fr. • Racine) top Charley Bergs in the sixth by a 6-1, 6-0 count.

Other singles winners for UW-Oshkosh were Todd Miller (So. • Shorewood) in the first flight and Jeff Hagman (Jr. • Manitowoc) in the second.

In doubles play, UW-Oshkosh's three results included an 8-0 victory by Degerman and Phil Krull (Fr. • Appleton) over Josh Crom and Chee Vang in the third flight. Other UW-Oshkosh tandems victorious were Foster and Hagman in the first flight and Hardel and Vedder in the second. Foster and Hagman posted an 8-1 win over Marko Dugandzic and Josh Kuhn-Kraemer in the first flight.

Titans Outshine Stars


Jeff HagmanThe UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team lost only 10 games as it overpowered Dominican University (Ill.), 7-0, on Saturday (April 3) at the Oshkosh YMCA Tennis Center.

In singles competition, UW-Oshkosh (8-9) took 72 of the 79 games played to win each of the six flights with little difficulty. The Titans also dominated action in the three doubles flights by winning 24 of the 27 games played.

UW-Oshkosh had a pair of 6-0, 6-0 singles winners as Jeff Hagman (Jr. • Manitowoc) routed Matt Kusek in the third flight and Mark Foster (Sr. • Delavan) demolished Tom Krozel in the sixth. The Titans also had Joel Vedder (Fr. • Mahtomedi, Minn.) defeat Alfredo Lobato in the fourth flight by a 6-1, 6-0 score and Josh Hardel (So. • Oshkosh) trip Manuel Chavez by a 6-0, 6-1 count in the fifth.

Other singles winners for the Titans were Todd Miller (So. • Shorewood) in the first flight and Eric Aronson (Sr. • South Milwaukee) in the second.

UW-Oshkosh's top performance in doubles play belonged to Hardel and Vedder, who teamed to defeat Chavez and Krozel in the third flight by an 8-0 score. The Titans also had Aronson and Miller win by an 8-2 score over Lubos Bagos and Kestutis Gasiunas in the first flight and Foster and Hagman by an 8-1 tally over Kusek and Lobato in the second.

The dual meet was the first between UW-Oshkosh and Dominican University (1-10).

Titans Injure Vikings


Josh HardelA loss in the top singles flight was UW-Oshkosh's only blemish as the Titans defeated Lawrence University, 6-1, in a men's tennis match held Friday (April 2) at the Oshkosh YMCA Tennis Center. The dual meet was the first between the two schools since 2001, also a 6-1 victory for the Titans.

UW-Oshkosh (7-9) captured five of the six singles contests against Lawrence University (3-2), including a 6-0, 6-0 win by Josh Hardel (So. • Oshkosh) over Junpei Furukawa in the fifth flight. The Titans also received a 6-1, 6-1 victory by Jeff Hagman (Jr. • Manitowoc) over Brian Hilgeman in the third flight and a 6-2, 6-0 win by Joel Vedder (Fr. • Mahtomedi, Minn.) over Dan Putterman in the fourth.

Other UW-Oshkosh singles victors were Eric Aronson (Sr. • South Milwaukee) in the second flight and Mark Foster (Sr. • Delavan) in the sixth.

UW-Oshkosh took all three doubles bouts against the Vikings, with Hardel and Vedder pairing up to defeat Furukawa and Alex Weck in the third flight by an 8-1 score. Also winning doubles contests for the Titans were Aronson and Todd Miller (So. • Shorewood) in the first flight and Foster and Hagman in the second.

Titans Romp Past Red Hawks, Pioneers


Eric AronsonJeff HagmanThe UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team had little difficulty conquering Midwest Conference members Ripon College and Carroll College in dual meets held Saturday (March 27) in Fond du Lac.

UW-Oshkosh (6-9) defeated Ripon College (4-10) by a 7-0 score and Carroll College (0-4) by a 6-1 count to record its fifth dual meet victory in six decisions.

UW-Oshkosh rolled past Ripon College by winning all six singles and two of three doubles bouts. Jeff Hagman (Jr. • Manitowoc) enjoyed UW-Oshkosh's largest margin of victory in singles play, routing Ripon College's Ben Metzler in the third flight by a 6-1, 6-3 score. The Titans also had Eric Aronson (Sr. • South Milwaukee) oust the Red Hawks' Adam Bruno in the second flight by a 6-4, 6-1 tally.

Other singles winners for the Titans were Todd Miller (So. • Shorewood) in the first flight, Josh Hardel (So. • Oshkosh) in the fourth, Mark Foster (Sr. • Delavan) in the fifth and Trevor Degerman (Fr. • Racine) in the sixth.

In doubles play, UW-Oshkosh received victories from Foster and Hagman in the second flight and Degerman and Hardel in the third. Foster and Hagman topped Ripon College's Metzler and Alex Wente by an 8-3 score.

UW-Oshkosh gained its third straight win over Carroll College by capturing five of six singles and all three doubles matches. Aronson had a 6-0, 6-0 win over the Pioneers' Craig Mours in the second flight, while Hagman posted a 6-3, 6-0 win over Nick Kavelaris in the third and Foster a 6-1, 6-2 win over Chip Bartel in the fourth.

Other singles winners for UW-Oshkosh were Miller in the first flight and Degerman in the fifth.

UW-Oshkosh swept all three doubles contests against Carroll College, with Foster and Hagman defeating Bartel and Kavelaris in the second flight by an 8-1 score. Also winning doubles matches for the Titans were Aronson and Miller in the first flight and Hardel and Phil Krull (Fr. • Appleton) in the third.

Titans Win Two Of Three Matches In California

Surrounding a loss to Chapman University (Calif.) with wins over Whittier College (Calif.) and the California Institute of Technology, the UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team returned home from its trip to California with a 2-1 dual meet record.

UW-Oshkosh (4-9) opened play in California with a 7-0 victory over Whittier College on Monday (March 15) in Whittier. The Titans followed that performance with a 5-2 loss to Chapman University on Thursday (March 18) in Orange and a 5-2 win over the California Institute of Technology on Friday (March 19) in Pasadena.

UW-Oshkosh's Eric Aronson (Sr. • South Milwaukee) and Jeff Hagman (Jr. • Manitowoc) swept all three of their singles opponents on the trip, while Josh Hardel (So. • Oshkosh) and Joel Vedder (Fr. • Mahtomedi, Minn.) topped two of their three foes. In doubles play, all three of UW-Oshkosh's tandems won two of their three matches.

Against Whittier College, UW-Oshkosh won 91 of its 96 singles and doubles games. UW-Oshkosh singles players victorious by 6-0, 6-0 counts were Todd Miller (So. • Shorewood) over Joseph Shoi in the first flight, Aronson over Brian McSorley in the second and Hagman over Nicholas Zehr in the third. Also winning singles bouts for the Titans were Vedder in the fourth flight, Hardel in the fifth and Phil Krull (Fr. • Appleton) in the sixth.

All three of UW-Oshkosh's doubles teams won by 8-0 scores in the match, including Hagman and Miller in the first flight over McSorley and Shoi. Other doubles wins went to Hardel and Vedder in the second flight and Aronson and Trevor Degerman (Fr. • Racine) in the third.

In its loss to Chapman University (3-6), UW-Oshkosh had only two victories in six singles and three doubles contests. Both of UW-Oshkosh's wins came in singles play, where Aronson defeated Justin Jonas in the second flight by a 4-2, 2-6 (7-5) score and Hagman ousted Ryan McCormack in the third flight by a 6-3, 6-3 tally.

UW-Oshkosh's closest loss in doubles play came in the first flight, an 8-5 setback for Hagman and Miller to Brock Heimann and Jonas.

UW-Oshkosh rebounded from its loss to Chapman University by tripping the California Institute of Technology (6-4). The Titans captured seven victories in the match, including all three in doubles play.

Singles winners for the Titans were Aronson in the second flight, Hagman in the third, Vedder in the fourth and Hardel in the fifth. Hagman overwhelmed the Beavers' Ed Perepelitsky by a 6-1, 6-0 score for UW-Oshkosh's largest margin of victory in singles action.

In doubles activity, UW-Oshkosh's Aronson and Degerman crushed Michael Chiang and Yiyang Gong in the third flight by an 8-0 score. Other doubles winners for the Titans were Hagman and Miller in the first flight and Hardel and Vedder in the second.

Titans Wound Green Knights


Joel VedderThe UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team ended a pair of streaks and extended another when it defeated St. Norbert College, 5-2, on Tuesday (March 9) in Green Bay.

The victory ended UW-Oshkosh's (2-8) two-match losing streak and halted St. Norbert College's (4-3) three-match winning skein. The conquest also increased UW-Oshkosh's winning streak over St. Norbert College to 13 matches, including 7-0 counts from 1999 to 2003.

UW-Oshkosh captured four of the six singles contests played between the two teams, with Eric Aronson (Sr. • South Milwaukee) winning in the second flight, Joel Vedder (Fr. • Mahtomedi, Minn.) in the fourth, Josh Hardel (So. • Oshkosh) in the fifth and Mark Foster (Sr. • Delavan) in the sixth.

Foster lost just one game in defeating Ed Perry, 6-1, 6-0, while Hardel lost only two games in ousting Eric Siems, 6-1, 6-1. Vedder was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Mike Schmitz and Aronson a 6-1, 6-3 victor over Andrew Winters.

In doubles play, UW-Oshkosh was victorious twice as Foster and Jeff Hagman (Jr. • Manitowoc) defeated Schmitz and Dean Verstegen in the second flight, 8-1, and Hardel and Vedder topped Perry and Ed Wagner in the third flight, 8-4.

Eagles Fly Past Titans


Mark FosterThe UW-La Crosse men's tennis team won eight of its nine singles and doubles contests to coast to a 6-1 victory over UW-Oshkosh on Saturday (March 6) in La Crosse.

UW-La Crosse (5-3) posted all five of its singles victories against UW-Oshkosh (1-8) in straight sets, with only Mike Mooren's 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) win over the Titans' Jeff Hagman (Jr. • Manitowoc) in the third flight going to a tiebreaker.

UW-Oshkosh's lone singles win came in the sixth flight, a 6-4, 6-4 victory for Mark Foster (Sr. • Delavan) over the Eagles' Andy Dobbins.

In doubles play, UW-La Crosse received stiffer competition from UW-Oshkosh as it won two flights by two games and one flight by three. The Titans dropped a pair of 9-7 decisions in doubles action, with Eric Aronson (Sr. • South Milwaukee) and Todd Miller (So. • Shorewood) falling to UW-La Crosse's Jon Palmer and Drew Pollek in the first flight and Foster and Hagman losing to the Eagles' Mooren and Erik Krohn in the second.

Division II Warriors Capture Titans


Eric AronsonWinona State University (Minn.) snapped a two-match losing streak by defeating UW-Oshkosh, 7-2, in a men's tennis meet held Friday (March 5) in Winona, Minn.

The NCAA Division II Warriors (4-5) took the match from the NCAA Division III Titans (1-7) by winning five of six singles contests and two of three doubles bouts.

UW-Oshkosh's lone singles victory came in the second flight, where the Titans' Eric Aronson (Sr. • South Milwaukee) defeated the Warriors' Dan Clarke, 6-2, 7-6. With exception of Kyle Buchmeier's 6-1, 2-6 (10-7) victory over UW-Oshkosh's Joel Vedder (Fr. • Mahtomedi, Minn.) in the fourth flight, Winona State University posted four of its five singles wins in straight sets.

In doubles play, UW-Oshkosh's number two tandem of Mark Foster (Sr. • Delavan) and Jeff Hagman (Jr. • Manitowoc) defeated Buchmeier and John Gould by an 8-4 score. In the first flight of doubles activity, the UW-Oshkosh duo of Aronson and Todd Miller (So. • Shorewood) lost an 8-6 decision to Clarke and Josh Malwitz.

Titans End Iowa Trip With Win


Mark FosterJeff HagmanThe UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team snapped a losing streak that dated back to last season when it defeated Wheaton College (Ill.), 4-3, on Saturday (Feb. 28) in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

UW-Oshkosh's win, the first in eight matches for the Titans, came after it dropped decisions of 4-3 to Grinnell College (Iowa) on Friday (Feb. 27) and 7-0 to Coe College (Iowa) on Saturday in Cedar Rapids.

UW-Oshkosh (1-6) opened its weekend trip to the Hawkeye State with its loss to Grinnell College.

The Titans took three singles contests from the Pioneers as Todd Miller (So. • Shorewood) won in the first flight, Eric Aronson (Sr. • South Milwaukee) in the second and Jeff Hagman (Jr. • Manitowoc) in the third. Miller posted a 6-3, 6-4 win over Jim Finnessy, while Aronson defeated Eli Best, 7-6, 6-1, and Hagman edged Rick Fenbert, 6-4, 7-5. Aronson and Miller compiled the Titans' lone doubles victory, an 8-3 win over Finnessy and Fenbert in the first flight.

Coe College overwhelmed UW-Oshkosh by winning all six singles flights in straight sets and outscoring the Titans, 24-5, in doubles play.

Joel Vedder (Fr. • Mahtomedi, Minn.) had the tightest result in singles play for UW-Oshkosh as he dropped a 6-1, 7-5 decision to the Kohawks' Chris Paasch in the fourth flight.

Against Wheaton College, both the Titans and the Thunder won three singles bouts. The difference in the match came in doubles play, where UW-Oshkosh captured two of the three contests.

Winning singles disputes for the Titans were Hagman in the third flight, Josh Hardel (So. • Oshkosh) in the fifth and Mark Foster (Sr. • Delavan) in the sixth. Hagman defeated Christian Dawes by a score of 6-3, 1-6, 7-6, while Hardel ousted Graham Johnson, 6-3, 6-1, and Foster routed Jeff Darragh, 6-3, 6-0. Doubles victories for the Titans went to Foster and Hagman in the second flight, an 8-5 win over Daves and Ashton Williams, and Hardel and Vedder in the third flight, an 8-6 win over Darragh and Johnson.

Division I Phoenix Ousts Titans


Eric AronsonThe UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team was dealt its third shutout of the young 2004 season when NCAA Division I UW-Green Bay toppled the Titans, 7-0, on Sunday (Feb. 15) at the Oshkosh YMCA Tennis Center.

UW-Green Bay (5-3) took the match by winning all six singles bouts in straight sets and outscoring UW-Oshkosh (0-4) by a 24-11 count in the three doubles contests.

In singles play, UW-Oshkosh's Eric Aronson (Sr. • South Milwaukee), Jeff Hagman (Jr. • Manitowoc) and Mark Foster (Sr. • Delavan) each won six games to provide UW-Green Bay with its strongest competition. Aronson lost a 6-4, 6-2 decision to Jarett Cascino of the Phoenix in the second flight, while Hagman lost 6-2, 6-4 to Eric Hines in the third and Foster a 7-5, 6-1 tally to Derek Gonwa in the sixth.

The tightest doubles bout came in the second flight, where UW-Oshkosh's Foster and Hagman dropped an 8-5 decision to UW-Green Bay's Cascino and Gonwa. UW-Oshkosh tandems losing by identical 8-3 scores were Aronson and Todd Miller (So. • Shorewood) in the first flight to Ben Davis and Mat Weiss and Josh Hardel (So. • Oshkosh and Joel Vedder (Fr. • Mahtomedi, Minn.) in the third to Hines and Scott Dickert.

Titans Have Unpleasant Start To 2004 Season


Jeff HagmanJosh HardelThe UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team had a jarring start to the 2004 season as it dropped 7-0 decisions to both UW-Whitewater and Luther College (Iowa) and a 6-1 contest to Illinois Wesleyan University at the UW-Whitewater Invitational held Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 7-8) in Whitewater.

UW-Oshkosh registered only two victories on the court in the three matches, a number three singles win by Jeff Hagman (Jr. • Manitowoc) against Illinois Wesleyan University and a number two doubles win by Hagman and Josh Hardel (So. • Oshkosh) against UW-Whitewater. Hagman gained his singles victory by defeating Chauncey Staples of Illinois Wesleyan University, 6-3, 6-3, and teamed with Hardel to top Greg Isermann and Steve Klass of UW-Whitewater, 8-6.

UW-Whitewater (1-0) ousted UW-Oshkosh (0-3) by taking five of the six singles bouts in straight sets. The Warhawks captured the other singles bout, a contest in the second flight, on Matt Griffiths' 4-6, 6-1 (12-10) win over the Titans' Eric Aronson (Sr. • South Milwaukee). UW-Whitewater also had wins of 8-4 and 8-0 in doubles play.

Against Luther College (1-0), UW-Oshkosh dropped a competitive match, one which saw three singles contests go to a tiebreaker and all three bouts in doubles play decided by three sets or less. Losing tiebreakers in singles play for the Titans were Todd Miller (So. • Shorewood) in the first flight, Aronson in the second and Hagman in the third. Miller lost 6-4, 4-6 (11-9) to the Norse Marcin Niewiadomski, while Aronson lost 5-7, 7-5 (10-5) to Ryan Sommers and Hagman 7-6 (3), 4-6 (10-8) to Adam Strand. Luther College won in doubles play by scores of 8-6 in the first flight, 8-6 in the second and 8-5 in the third.

Illinois Wesleyan University (2-0) won five of its six singles contests against UW-Oshkosh, with Hagman winning in the third flight for the Titans' lone victory.
