Titans Perform Well At NCTA Tournament

Jeff HagmanTodd MillerJoel VedderThe UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team had two first-place finishes at the Northern Collegiate Tennis Association (NCTA) Tournament held Friday and Saturday (April 15-16) in La Crosse.

Capturing titles for the Titans were Joel Vedder (So. • Mahtomedi, Minn.) at number two singles and Jeff Hagman (Sr. • Manitowoc) and Todd Miller (Jr. • Shorewood) at number one doubles.

Vedder won his singles flight after going unbeaten in three matches, including a 6-4, 6-3 victory over UW-Eau Claire's Chris Slagle in the title contest. Vedder previously defeated Will Ruckel of the College of St. Scholastica (Minn.), 6-2, 6-3, and Greg Isermann of UW-Whitewater, 6-4, 6-3.

Hagman and Miller took first place after going unbeaten in two doubles matches, including an 8-2 win over UW-Eau Claire's Aaron Nordenskjold and Jake Znidarisch in the championship contest. The UW-Oshkosh duo also defeated UW-Whitewater's Matt Griffiths and Steve Klass, 8-3.

Finishing second for the Titans were Miller at number one singles and Corey Dickert (So. • Hartland) and Vedder at number two doubles.

Miller lost 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 to UW-Whitewater's Jordan Shilts in his title match after defeating UW-Whitewater's Griffiths, 6-4, 6-3, and UW-La Crosse's Grant Bernard, 6-3, 5-7 (10-3). Dickert and Vedder lost 8-5 to UW-Whitewater's Derek Nelson and Bill Stranberg in their championship contest after posting wins of 8-4 over Eric Vandersbelt and Ian Wencel of the College of St. Scholastica and 8-6 over Deke Bradley and Garrett Mason of UW-La Crosse.

No team scores were kept at the tournament.

Titans Too Much For Sabres

Joel VedderWinning 96 of 105 games, the UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team trounced Marian College, 7-0, on Wednesday (April 13) at the Kolf Sports Center Complex.

UW-Oshkosh (5-15) took 72 of 80 games in singles play, including 6-0, 6-0 contests by Todd Miller (Jr. • Shorewood) in the first flight, Joel Vedder (So. • Mahtomedi, Minn.) in the third and Brandon Lepp (So. • Green Bay) in the fifth. Miller defeated the Sabres' (3-7) Marko Dugandzic, while Vedder ousted Brian Ottman and Lepp routed Chee Vang.

The Titans also received singles wins from Jeff Hagman (Sr. • Manitowoc) in the second flight, Corey Dickert (So. • Hartland) in the fourth and Brett Hostetler (So. • De Pere) in the sixth. Hagman counted a 6-1, 6-2 win over Marian College's Tyler Leinweber, while Dickert recorded a 6-2, 6-1 victory over the Sabres' Chuck Bergs. Hostetler tallied a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Marian College's Josh Crom.

UW-Oshkosh registered a pair of 8-0 shutouts in doubles play as Hagman and Miller defeated Marian College's Dugandzic and Leinweber in the first flight and Dickert and Vedder smashed the Sabres' Bergs and Ottman in the second. UW-Oshkosh was victorious in the third flight as Hardel and Lepp beat Marian College's Crom and Vang, 8-1.

Titans Tripped By Blugolds, Warhawks


Jeff HagmanTodd MillerThe UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team earned five victories during losses of 4-3 to UW-Eau Claire and 7-0 to UW-Whitewater on Saturday (April 9) in Whitewater.

Jeff Hagman (Sr. • Manitowoc) and Todd Miller (Jr. • Shorewood) accounted for four of UW-Oshkosh's five victories by winning twice in doubles play and once each in singles action.

UW-Oshkosh (4-15) opened Saturday's activity with its loss to UW-Eau Claire (9-5). The Titans picked up three singles wins in the match as Miller defeated Chris Slagle in the first flight, 6-0, 6-2, Hagman edged Aaron Nordenskjold in the second, 6-4, 6-3, and Corey Dickert (So. • Hartland) trimmed Jeff Peterson in the fourth, 6-3, 6-4.

Hagman and Miller also joined forces for an 8-0 rout of UW-Eau Claire's number one doubles team of Nordenskjold and Tim Eisele.

UW-Oshkosh's lone win against UW-Whitewater (13-12) came at number one doubles, where Hagman and Miller nipped the Warhawks' Greg Isermann and Jordan Shilts, 9-8.

UW-Oshkosh lost three tight singles contests to UW-Whitewater as Miller fell to Shilts in the first flight, 6-4, 6-4, Hagman to Matt Griffiths in the second, 4-6, 6-4 (10-5) and Joel Vedder (So. • Mahtomedi, Minn.) to Isermann in the third, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.

Titans Fall To Eagles

Todd MillerThe UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team won twice in singles play and once in doubles action during a 5-2 loss to UW-La Crosse on Friday (April 8) in Whitewater.

Todd Miller (Jr. • Shorewood) was involved in two UW-Oshkosh (4-13) victories, including a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over UW-La Crosse's Grant Bernard at number one singles. Miller also teamed with Jeff Hagman (Sr. • Manitowoc) to post an 8-4 win over the Eagles' number one doubles tandem of Bernard and Jeff Strand.

UW-Oshkosh's remaining victory belonged to Joel Vedder (So. • Mahtomedi, Minn.). Vedder defeated UW-La Crosse's Dale Wroblewski at number three singles, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6.

UW-La Crosse (8-3) took the match by winning at number two, four, five and six singles and number two and three doubles.

Garrett Mason was the lone UW-La Crosse player to take part in two victories. Mason recorded a 6-2, 6-1 win over UW-Oshkosh's Brandon Lepp at number five singles and worked with Deke Bradley to register an 8-3 victory over the Titans' number three doubles squad of Lepp and Josh Hardel (Jr. • Oshkosh).

Titans Slay Green Knights

Brandon LeppThe UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team suffered only one blemish as it defeated St. Norbert College, 6-1, on Saturday (April 2) at the Oshkosh YMCA Tennis Center.

UW-Oshkosh (4-11) snapped a three-match losing by winning singles contests in the second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth flights. The Titans also won all three doubles contests.

In singles play, UW-Oshkosh had Jeff Hagman (Sr. • Manitowoc) beat Andrew Winters, 6-1, 6-0 in the second flight, Joel Vedder (So. • Mahtomedi, Minn.) rout Adrian Acosta, 6-0, 6-0 in the third, Corey Dickert (So. • Hartland) edge Chris Schmitz, 6-4, 0-6 (10-8) in the fourth, Brandon Lepp (So. • Green Bay) trim Dan Kriegl, 6-2, 6-4 in the fifth and Brett Hostetler (So. • De Pere) defeat Mike Schmitz, 6-3, 6-0 in the sixth.

Doubles winners for the Titans were Hagman and Todd Miller (Jr. • Shorewood) in the first flight, Dickert and Vedder in the second and Josh Hardel (Jr. • Oshkosh) and Lepp in the third. Hagman and Miller defeated Acosta and Aaron Sunday, 8-4, while Dickert and Vedder tripped Chris Schmitz and Winters, 8-2. Hardel and Lepp posted an 8-1 win over Kriegl and Mike Schmitz.

St. Norbert College (6-6) picked up its lone victory of the match at number one singles, a 6-1, 6-1 win for Sunday over the Titans' Miller.

Red Hawks Nip Titans

Joel VedderBen Metzler won the deciding contest as the Ripon College men's tennis team edged UW-Oshkosh, 4-3, on Friday (March 25) in Fond du Lac.

Metzler gave Ripon College (9-5) the dual meet win after ousting UW-Oshkosh's Corey Dickert (So. • Hartland), 4-6, 6-4 (10-8). The Red Hawks also received singles victories from Dave Czarnecki in the second flight, Alex Wente in the fifth and Paul Larson in the sixth.

UW-Oshkosh (3-11) had a pair of singles victories as Todd Miller (Jr. • Shorewood) won in the first flight and Joel Vedder (So. • Mahtomedi, Minn.) in the third. Miller defeated Ripon College's Paul Vanden Boogaard, 6-3, 7-6, while Vedder topped the Red Hawks' Ben Sweeney, 6-2, 7-6.

In doubles play, UW-Oshkosh won two of the three contests. The Titans gained wins from Jeff Hagman (Sr. • Manitowoc) and Miller in the first flight and Dickert and Vedder in the second. Hagman and Miller defeated the Ripon College duo of Czarnecki and Vanden Boogaard, 9-8, while Dickert and Vedder tripped the Red Hawk tandem of Ryan Manis and Sweeney, 8-6.

Ripon College's lone doubles win came from Metzler and Wente in the third flight.

Titans Post 1-2 Record In California

Brett HostetlerBrandon LeppKyle McConnellThe UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team defeated Whittier College (Calif.) and lost to Chapman University (Calif.) and Colorado College on its annual spring trip to California.

UW-Oshkosh (3-10) began its expedition with Monday's (March 14) 4-3 win over Whittier College. The Titans then dropped 7-0 decisions to Chapman University on Wednesday (March 16) and Colorado College on Thursday (March 17). UW-Oshkosh had Friday's (March 18) match against California Institute of Technology cancelled due to rain.

UW-Oshkosh edged Whittier College by winning three singles contests and taking the team point in doubles play.

UW-Oshkosh singles players successful against Whittier College were Brandon Lepp (So. • Green Bay) in the third flight, Kyle McConnell (Fr. • Hartland) in the fourth and Brett Hostetler (So. • De Pere) in the fifth. Lepp defeated the Poets' Louis Astbury, 6-2, 7-5, while McConnell routed Adrian Hallauer, 6-1, 6-0, and Hostetler demolished Whit Davis, 6-0, 6-1.

In doubles play, UW-Oshkosh got victories from Lepp and Josh Hardel (Jr. • Oshkosh) in the second flight and Hostetler and Jason Flock (Fr. • Greenfield) in the third. Hardel and Lepp defeated Whittier College's Astbury and Hallauer, 8-1, while Flock and Hostetler ousted Davis and Jo Choi, 8-3.

Chapman University (7-4) overpowered UW-Oshkosh by winning all six singles matches and two of three doubles contests. The Panthers lost only three games to the Titans in singles play.

UW-Oshkosh's lone victory against Chapman University came at number three doubles, where Hostetler and McConnell defeated Travis Kula and Morgan Surfas, 8-1. The Titans lost a competitive match at number one doubles, where Corey Dickert (So. • Hartland) and Jeff Hagman (Sr. • Manitowoc) dropped an 8-6 decision to the Panthers' Ali Kermani and Scott Kim.

Colorado College also won all six singles matches and two of three doubles contests against UW-Oshkosh.

UW-Oshkosh's only victory against Colorado College came at number three doubles, where Hostetler and McConnell defeated Tyler Fox and Dakin Henderson, 8-4. The Titans received their best effort in singles play from Lepp in the third flight and Hostetler in the fifth. Both UW-Oshkosh players lost 6-4, 6-1 decisions, with Lepp losing to the Tigers' Tim Maguire and Hostetler to Henderson.

Knights Conquer Titans

Todd MillerTodd Miller (Jr. • Shorewood) was involved in both victories as the UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team lost a 6-1 decision to Calvin College (Mich.) on Saturday (March 5) in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Calvin College (1-1) ousted UW-Oshkosh (2-8) by winning five of six singles matches and two of three doubles contests.

Miller registered his victories at number one singles and number one doubles. In singles play, Miller defeated Calvin College's Jonathan Miedema, 6-4, 7-5. In doubles action, Miller teamed with Jeff Hagman (Sr. • Manitowoc) to topple the Knights' Miedema and Ricky Tilton, 8-4.

UW-Oshkosh's five singles losses included Hagman's 7-5, 7-5 setback in the second flight to Calvin College's Kevin VanHaitsma. The Titans lost 24 of the 35 games played in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth singles flights.

Another competitive performance for the Titans came at number three doubles, where Corey Dickert (So. • Hartland) and Brett Hostetler (So. • De Pere) dropped an 8-4 decision to the Knights' Mike Goorhouse and Rafael Siebenschein.

Division II Lakers Sink Titans

Todd MillerTodd Miller (Jr. • Shorewood) had the lone victory as the UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team dropped an 8-1 decision to NCAA Division II Grand Valley State University (Mich.) on Friday (March 4) in Allendale, Mich.

Grand Valley State University (5-2) counted its eight team points by winning five singles contests and all three doubles matches. The Lakers posted their singles victories in straight sets and lost only 11 games in doubles play.

UW-Oshkosh (2-7) scored its lone team point on Miller's 6-4, 7-6 victory over Grand Valley State University's Kyle Dehne in the number one singles flight.

The Titans' closest setback in the match came at number one doubles, where Miller and Jeff Hagman (Sr. • Manitowoc) lost a 9-7 debate to the Lakers' Dehne and Adam Sandusky.

UW-Oshkosh's five singles losses included Hagman's 6-4, 6-2 setback in the second flight to Grand Valley State University's Sandusky and Brandon Lepp's (So. • Green Bay) 6-2, 6-4 setback to the Lakers' Justin Sauerbrey in the fifth.

Kohawks, Thunder Hush Titans


Jeff HagmanTodd MillerThe UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team was held to just one victory in each match as it dropped a pair of 7-0 decisions to Coe College (Iowa) and Wheaton College (Ill.) on Saturday (Feb. 26) in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

UW-Oshkosh (2-6) counted both of its victories at number one doubles, where Jeff Hagman (Sr. • Manitowoc) and Todd Miller (Jr. • Shorewood) posted 9-8 wins over Chad Evans and Chris Paasch of Coe College and Joe Williams and Josh Williams of Wheaton College.

UW-Oshkosh lost all six singles contests to Coe College in straight sets. Providing the Titans with their closest result in singles play were Hagman in the second flight and Brandon Lepp (So. • Green Bay) in the fifth. Both players suffered 7-6, 6-1 setbacks, with Hagman losing to Coe College's Ryan Krabbe and Lepp to the Kohawks' Jake Michael.

Coe College took the doubles point from UW-Oshkosh after winning 8-3 in the second flight and 8-1 in the third.

Against Wheaton College, UW-Oshkosh lost all six singles debates in straight sets. The closest outcome in singles action for the Titans came in the first flight, where Miller lost a 6-4, 6-4 decision to Joe Williams.

The doubles point went to Wheaton College after the Thunder won 8-3 in the second flight and 8-4 in the third.

Pioneers Overthrow Titans

Jeff HagmanJeff Hagman (Sr. • Manitowoc) and Todd Miller (Jr. • Shorewood) combined for three victories as the UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to Grinnell College on Friday (Feb. 25) in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Grinnell College (4-1) counted its score by taking four of six singles contests and winning the doubles point. The Pioneers posted victories at number three, four, five and six singles and number two and three doubles.

UW-Oshkosh (2-4) scored both of its points in singles play, where Miller won in the first flight and Hagman in the second. Miller defeated Grinnell College's Julian West, 6-1, 6-4, while Hagman edged the Pioneers' Eli Best 6-3, 6-4. Hagman and Miller linked together at number one doubles to defeat Grinnell College's Jordan Lee and Brij Patnaik, 8-4.

UW-Oshkosh's closest loss of the match came at number two doubles, where Brandon Lepp (So. • Green Bay) and Joel Vedder (So. • Mahtomedi, Minn.) dropped a 9-7 decision to Grinnell College's Rick Fenbert and D.J. Warden. In singles play, the Titans' closest loss was Corey Dickert's (So. • Hartland) 6-4, 6-2 setback in the second flight to the Pioneers' Patnaik.

Division I Phoenix Handcuff Titans

Todd MillerTodd Miller (Jr. • Shorewood) recorded the lone victory as the UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to NCAA Division I UW-Green Bay on Saturday (Feb. 19) at the Oshkosh YMCA Tennis Center.

UW-Green Bay (5-2) defeated UW-Oshkosh (2-4) by taking five of six singles matches and all three doubles contests. The Phoenix won its five singles matches in straight sets and lost only nine games in doubles play.

Miller tallied his win for UW-Oshkosh by edging UW-Green Bay's Tim Prudlow at number one singles, 7-5, 4-6 (10-8).

UW-Oshkosh lost two close matches to the Phoenix, including Brandon Lepp's (So. • Green Bay) 7-5, 6-4 decision to Mat Weiss at number five singles. The Titans also suffered a close setback at number one doubles, where Miller and Jeff Hagman (Sr. • Manitowoc) were trimmed 8-6 by the UW-Green Bay duo of Prudlow and Jarett Cascino.

UW-Green Bay had two easy victories in singles play as Derek Gonwa and Mark Goldin won by 6-1, 6-0 counts in the third and sixth flights, respectively. Gonwa defeated UW-Oshkosh's Joel Vedder (So. • Mahtomedi, Minn.), while Goldin ousted the Titans' Kyle McConnell (Fr. • Hartland).

The Phoenix also had an easy 8-1 victory in the third doubles flight as Gonwa and Tyler Dorn defeated UW-Oshkosh's Corey Dickert (So. • Hartland) and Josh Hardel (Jr. • Oshkosh).

Titans Shoot Down Falcons

Todd MillerThe UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team won its second consecutive match as it posted a 5-2 victory over Concordia University on Friday (Feb. 18) at the Oshkosh YMCA Tennis Center.

UW-Oshkosh (2-3) took the match after winning four of six singles contests and capturing the doubles point. The Titans posted victories in the first, second, fifth and sixth flight of singles play and the first and third flight of doubles competition.

Winning singles matches for UW-Oshkosh were Todd Miller (Jr. • Shorewood) in the first flight, Jeff Hagman (Sr. • Manitowoc) in the second, Brandon Lepp (So. • Green Bay) in the fifth and Kyle McConnell (Fr. • Hartland) in the sixth.

Miller registered a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Concordia University's Ira Meiling, while Hagman picked up a 6-4, 6-2 win over the Falcons' Chris West. The Titans also received Lepp's 6-1, 6-4 victory over Concordia University's Kyle Jagler and McConnell's 6-2, 6-1 victory over the Falcons' Adam Peck.

Hagman and Miller teamed to win at number one doubles as they defeated Concordia University's Meiling and West, 8-1. The Titans also won in the third doubles flight as Corey Dickert (So. • Hartland) and Josh Hardel (Jr. • Oshkosh) ousted the Falcons' Jagler and Peck, 8-5.

Concordia University (0-1) compiled its two team points in singles play as Trey Senney won in the third flight and Aaron Hoeppner in the fourth. Hoeppner and Senney also won at number two doubles for the Falcons.

Titans Gain First Win Of Season

Joel VedderThe UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team won all six singles contests as it defeated Lawrence University, 7-0, on Saturday (Feb. 12) at the Oshkosh YMCA Tennis Center.

UW-Oshkosh (1-3) posted five of its six singles wins in straight sets, with the lone exception being Joel Vedder's (So. • Mahtomedi, Minn.) 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 victory over Lawrence University's Brian Hilgeman in the third flight.

Also winning in singles play for the Titans were Todd Miller (Jr. • Shorewood) in the first flight, Jeff Hagman (Sr. • Manitowoc) in the second, Corey Dickert (So. • Hartland) in the fourth, Brandon Lepp (So. • Green Bay) in the fifth and Josh Hardel (Jr. • Oshkosh) in the sixth. Lepp went unbeaten in his contest as he defeated Lawrence University's Nathan Kish, 6-0, 6-0. The Titans also had Miller win by a 6-3, 6-0 count over the Vikings' Fabrice Munyakazi-Juru.

In doubles play, UW-Oshkosh posted a pair of 8-1 victories as Hagman and Miller won in the first flight and Lepp and Vedder in the third. Hagman and Miller defeated Lawrence University's Nick Beyler and Brian Hilgeman, while Lepp and Vedder ousted the Vikings' Kish and Phil Roy.

Lawrence University (0-1) picked up its lone win of the match at number two doubles, where the Vikings' Fabrice Munyakazi-Juru and Alex Weck topped the Titans' Dickert and Hardel, 8-3.

Titans Toppled In Season Opener

Jeff HagmanTodd MillerThe UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team opened its 2005 season by dropping 6-1 decisions to UW-Whitewater, Luther College (Iowa) and the University of Chicago (Ill.) at the UW-Whitewater Invitational held Saturday-Sunday (Feb. 5-6) in Whitewater.

UW-Oshkosh won only three contests in the tournament as Jeff Hagman (Sr. • Manitowoc) posted two victories at number two singles and Todd Miller (Jr. • Shorewood) one at number one singles.

Hagman registered his victories by defeating Matt Griffiths of UW-Whitewater, 3-6, 7-5 (10-6), and Sasha Deriy of the University of Chicago, 6-3, 7-5. Miller gained his win by ousting Jono Martin of Luther College, 7-6, 7-6.

Hagman and Miller suffered three close setbacks in number one doubles play as they lost 8-6 to Jordan Shilts and Greg Isermann of UW-Whitewater, 8-5 to Martin and Brad Nelson of UW-Whitewater and 9-7 to Ward Bortz and Deriy of the University of Chicago.

UW-Oshkosh had two tight losses in singles action, both against Luther College. In the third flight, UW-Oshkosh's Joel Vedder (So. • Mahtomedi, Minn.) lost 6-1, 5-7 (10-6) to Luther College's Christian Klier. In the fifth flight, the Titans' Brandon Lepp (So. • Green Bay) lost 3-6, 6-2 (10-6) to Luther College's Bjorn Hanson
