Wartburg College has the seen the highs and the lows in its two games at the NCAA
Division III Baseball Championships at Fox Cities Stadium.
The Knights earned a victory in their
first game by throwing out the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the ninth,
sending the Wartburg team spilling out of the dugout in jubilation. Wartburg was
on the opposite end of that situation on Sunday. After throwing out an Allegheny
College runner at the plate earlier in the game to preserve the lead, the Gators
scored a run in the bottom of the ninth to tie the score and added another in
the 10th to pull out a 3-2 victory in a winner's bracket game.
"The one they went to tie it,
it was another play at the plate, it was exactly the same thing (as Friday night),"
Wartburg head coach Joel Holst said.
"There's only so much luck you're
going to get. You've got to win some of these game yourself. We just didn't have
anybody offensively step up today. I don't think we had many key hits in the ballgame."
Allegheny (38-8) advances to play
the University of St. Thomas (34-12) at noon Monday. The Knights drop into the
loser's bracket and take on Montclair State University (38-7-1) in an elimination
game at 7 p.m. Sunday.
"That's the way our team has
been all year long," Allegheny head coach Mike Ferris said. "We've been
very resilient. That's why I think we've got a shot. We've got a lot of heart,
a lot of character."
Wartburg led 2-1 heading into the
bottom of the ninth when Kevin Hiles smacked a one-out single to left field off
starter Robert Mudd. After Brian Zorman struck out, Joe Kacsanek singled to put
runners at first and second. Hiles was lifted for pinch runner Alan Clouse and
No. 9 hitter Tug Ollock singled to center field. Wartburg center fielder Patrick
Lowe couldn't repeat his heroics of Friday night when he threw out the tying run
at the plate. Clouse slid in ahead of the tag and the game was tied 2-2.
The top of the 10th inning had a promising
start for the Knights when Zachary Hoover led off with a single. Hoover was then
caught trying to steal and Matt Thede struck out. Andy Fischels and Scott Bartz
hit back-to-back singles, but Vernon Birmingham grounded out to end the threat.
An error on Wartburg third baseman
Jay Whannel allowed lead-off hitter Brad Hensler to reach in the bottom of the
10th against reliever Patrick Smith (4-1). A bunt moved Whannel to second and
Smith walked Jarrod Essey to put runners at first and second. After a strikeout,
Zorman lined a single to right and Hensler easily beat the throw to give Allegheny
the victory.
Scott Swinchock (9-2) went the distance
to get win for Allegheny. Swinchock gave up 10 hits, struck out 11 and walked
two.
Wartburg got on the board in the first
when Jude Burger reached on an error and scored on Fischel's infield single. Wartburg
made it 2-0 in the second when Whannel led off the inning with a double and scored
on Jay Bollman's single up the middle.
Allegheny cut the lead to 2-1 in the
fourth when Hensler singled and scored on an error. The Gators could have tied
the game in the sixth but Hoover, Wartburg's right fielder, threw out Essey trying
to score from second base on a single. |
