Unbeaten Trinity Awaits Opponent In National Championship Game
The perfect season remains alive for Trinity College (Conn.).
The Bantams moved to 44-0 with an 8-5 victory over Johns Hopkins University Sunday (May 25) in the matchup of the two remaining unbeaten teams in the finals of the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium.
Trinity, owners of the longest winning streak in NCAA Division III history, advances to Tuesday’s (May 27) championship game at noon. The Bantams are attempting to be the first team to win a national title without a loss.
Monday (May 26) features a pair of elimination games, as the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (41-9) takes on Adrian College (36-12) at noon. Johns Hopkins (40-7) plays the winner of the Whitewater-Adrian game at 3:30 p.m. on Monday.
Trinity led 6-2 before Johns Hopkins rallied for three runs in the top of the eighth. Michael Regan struck out Matt Benchener to end the threat, and Trinity added a pair of insurance runs in its half of the eighth to seal the victory.
UW-Whitewater started the day with a 7-4 victory that eliminated Chapman University (40-5). Jeff Donovan hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning, and Joe Munn blasted a solo shot in the eighth to power the Warhawks. Aaron Dott went 7.1 innings to earn the victory.
Adrian held off a Linfield College (35-13) rally in the ninth inning to hang on for a 3-2 victory that eliminated the Wildcats. Adrian broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning with Steve Vanderheyden’s run-scoring double. Linfield loaded the bases in the ninth, but Nick Sarkissian got a fly out to end the game. |
