GRAND CHUTE, Wis.
The College of Wooster and the University of St. Thomas are the lone unbeaten teams after impressive victories Saturday (May 23) in the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium.
Wooster (41-9) pounded out 19 hits and rolled to a 14-1 victory over Kean University (39-10) in a winners’ bracket game.
Mark Miller fired seven shutout innings, and Stu Heath and Shane Swearingen had three hits apiece for the Scots, who scored in every inning but the second. The top four hitters in the Wooster lineup combined for nine hits and scored eight runs.
St. Thomas (38-12) jumped out to a 6-0 lead and didn’t look back on its way to a 16-5 victory over Shenandoah University (38-9) in the other winners’ bracket game.
The Tommies scored in each of the first six innings, including a six-run outburst in the sixth. Roy Larson went 4-for-6 with four runs batted in to pace St. Thomas’ 18-hit attack. He blasted a three-run homer in the sixth for the Tommies. Lead-off hitter Matt McQuillan also had four hits, and he scored three runs for St. Thomas.
Bryce Gapinski went 5 1/3 innings to earn the victory for St. Thomas.
Wooster and St. Thomas square off Sunday (May 24) at 7:00 p.m.
Carthage College (37-8) broke open a close game with the first grand slam of the finals in a 10-1 victory over defending national champion Trinity (Conn.) College (33-7) in an elimination game.
Carthage led 1-0 but had the bases loaded with one out in the seventh when John Lequia belted a grand slam to right field. Tim Hansen added a two-run double later in what proved to be an eight-run inning for the Red Men. Lequia finished the game 2-for-5 with five RBIs.
Jordan Jaehne-Llanas went eight innings to pick up the victory for Carthage. He gave up seven hits, struck out nine and walked five.
Chapman University (31-16) stayed alive with a 4-2 victory over Farmingdale State College (30-17) in Saturday’s other elimination game.
The Panthers broke a 2-2 tie with runs in the seventh and eighth. Chapman scored a run without the benefit of a hit in the seventh and then got a double and a sacrifice fly to score another run in the eighth. Tyler Hadzinsky went 3-for-3 to pace Chapman’s offense.
Matt Irsfeld went the distance for the Panthers, allowing six hits while striking out seven and walking three.
Action on Sunday gets under way at noon with Chapman taking on Kean in an elimination game. Carthage then faces Shenandoah in an elimination game at 3:30 p.m. |
