Men's 1,600-Meter Relay Recap

OSHKOSH, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse provided a fitting end to a dominating performance at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field National Championship, scoring the title in the men’s 1,600-meter relay and claiming the team title in convincing fashion at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

The relay squad, made up of David Kolbe, John Doble, Brad Peterson and Jeremy Deterville, held the lead at every handoff and finished in 3:11.01, ahead of second-place Monmouth College (Ill.) (Dante Daniels, Josh Reschke, Tyler Ryndle, Luke Reschke), which finished at 3:12.06. Monmouth College overtook Lincoln University (Pa.) in the final 30 meters; however, Lincoln University was later disqualified after a handoff violation following the first leg. Heidelberg College (Ohio) was third in 3:12.41, while Central College (Iowa) was fourth in 3:12.62 and North Central College (Ill.) was fifth in 3:12.72.

UW-La Crosse squad entered the relay with the slowest qualifying time among the nine finalist teams; its 3:20.72 time was more than five seconds slower than top qualifier Monmouth College's time of 3:15.05.

For the Eagles, it was the fourth national crown in the 1,600-meter relay in the last five years, and the fifth NCAA Division III title in the event in program history.

With the final event win, Wisconsin-La Crosse finished with 99 team points, 65 ahead of second-place State University of New York-Cortland’s 34. With the second-place finish in the relay, Monmouth College clinched third place in the team standings with 28 points.
